I think my favorite part of the first lecture was "And sometimes we throw something in because it makes the desired reaction work better, but we don't really know why." (And it's freakin' true. There are times in OrgChem where the instructions called for the equivalent of a rusted iron washer to be suspended or added to the solution. It would precipitate out, but it made the reaction faster or more complete for some reason. Science is strange and wonderful.)
