Heavy Metal was born mid-60s when Toni Iommi lost the tips of his fingers in an industrial accident. From then on he had to tune down his guitar so the strings wouldn't hurt his fingers so much, which gave us that deep, doomy sound of Black Sabbath.

Maiden are still touring regularly. Their last studio album came out in 2015 and they’ve been touring their latest tour for a couple of years before having to cancel a load of shows due to Covid.
Metal as a genre began in the late 60s/early 70s but Maiden helped define the sound, particularly British metal, in the early 80s.

Iron Maiden has been around since 1975. Dave Murray is the longest member besides Steve Harris. Bruce Dickinson started in 1982 after their other singer left the band. Other drummer, Clive Burr left the band in 1983, and current drummer, Nicko McBrain stepped in as the drummer. Adrian Smith came in about the same time. Then he left the band. New guy, Janick Gers replaced him. Then Adrian came back to the band. Instead releasing Janick, they kept him. He, Adrian and Dave are known by the fans as "Three Amigos". They share leads on each song.

Thank you so much for reacting to one of my favourite Iron Maiden songs. What made the reaction so much better was that one of you knew the story behind the song so you were both able to get some context to the performance. Iron Maiden not only have one of the greatest vocalists of all time singing and acting out the lyrics in such a theatrical way, but also have exceptional musicians that create music that add to the story, even enhance it. I’ve always thought that they are the closest thing to genuine modern opera because they are master storytellers. Please check out more. BTW, I enjoyed this so much I’ve just subscribed. Not only do they put on these incredible, bombastic shows, Bruce Dickinson (singer) goes through a ton of costume changes for the songs, the set constantly changes and they keep that energy going for hours. The bassist, Steve Harris and guitarist Dave Murray are the last remaining original members that have been on EVERY RECORDING. Steve is also the primary songwriter and all of their songs are based on literature and mythology. They originally had 2 guitarists and a bassist but added the 3rd guitarist during some personnel shifts in the 90s.

That was a pretty good explanation from someone that knows a little about Iron Maiden’s history. I will try to fill in some on the band members. The band formed at the end of 1975 by Steve Harris and they went through a lot of changes before their first album in 1980. *Edit per comment below. The musicians listed below account only for those that have been on an official album release.
Bass - Steve Harris (formed the band)
Guitar 1 (far left) - Dave Murray (not original but joined before their first album)
Guitar 2 (middle white guitar) - Adrian Smith (joined 1980 before 2nd album, left in 1990 and rejoined in 1999)
Guitar 3 (far right) - Janick Gers (joined 1990 after Adrian Smith left stayed after Smith rejoined)
Singer - Bruce Dickinson (second singer, joined in 1982 before the 3rd album, left in 1993 and rejoined in 1999)
Drums - Nicko McBrain (second drummer, joined in 1983 before the 4th album)
This tour in 2008 was a throwback to their classic 1984 tour for Powerslave which was recorded for Live After Death, that’s why they had the Egyptian stage. They change the curtain backdrop artwork for each song, but the stage remains the same.

I am 52. Iron Maiden was my first concert ever and that was in 1983. This is the same lineup of members that were there in 1983, with the exception of Janick Gers, who joined in 1990. So it’s the 1993 lineup with one additional guitarist. I also saw them in 1985 on the World Slavery Tour, where they played this song when it was new and on the ‘Powerslave’ album.
The drummer, Nicko McBrain, apparently loves his job, because he always appears to be having a great time. He’s an amazing drummer and he’s 68 years old. Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer, is quite an interesting fellow, being a pilot, (he flies the band around on tour in their jet, is Chairman of the Board, (or was), at Cardiff Airlines, has even done some stunt plane flying, as he owns a replica of the Red Baron’s Triplane. He used to be an Olympic level fencer, and beat throat cancer.
And yes, they’re still at it. They had a studio album come out in 2015. I saw them live three times in 2016, twice in 2017, and twice in 2019. They just recently released a live CD for the 2019 tour, and are working on a new studio album.
They really are an amazing band and they’re one of the best, (if not THE best), live bands out there, (though Alice Cooper is equally amazing live and Night Ranger puts on a fun, high energy, though less theatrical, show, too).

Depending on where you research and who you ask Black Sabbath was considered the first band to release a heavy metal song. They are considered a hard rock band in this era. For the time when they were formed (1968) they were considered as one of the heaviest bands. Now this is just what has been coined as mainstream origin of metal. I am sure there were many "metal" sounding bands around prior to that time.

Glad to let you know that although there were a lot of lineup changes in the first few years of the band, the band you see in this performance is the classic lineup that was finalized in 1982. The lead singer (Bruce Dickinson left the band for several years, and so did the guitarist wearing the bandana (Adrian Smith), but both returned to the band in 1999 and the lineup has been the same since then. Also, the guitarist that likes to dance around (Janick Gers) who had replaced Smith when he left was not kicked out when Smith returned - instead they kept him on so they could play 3 part guitar arrangements and sound even closer to the album sound during live performances.

Iron Maiden are legendary for many reasons...most of which are already stated by other posters...
But I didn't see mention of the fact that their singer Bruce Dickinson is one of the greatest vocalist in all of rock/metal... along with a couple of others for sure. Not to sell the rest of the band short as they are all really really talented.
    Some other great Maiden songs would be;
    The Trooper
    Hallowed Be Thy Name
    The Clansman
    Fear of the Dark
    Aces High
    And really...MANY more.
And yes...if you had to use just 1 word to describe them live...it would be energy. Even in this video here that you did, I'm not sure the age of the other band members, but Bruce Dickinson was born in 1958, so he was 49 or 50 years old during this concert. That was 12 years ago and they are still touring today (well...would be if it wasn't for the lockdowns).
FYI...that plane you saw landing at the very beginning ... was probably being piloted by Bruce Dickinson... he is a pilot as well that flies their plane!

So first off I saw this tour back in May of 2008 in Irvine, CA. AMZING SHOW!!! Now, as a 13 year old back in 1984 I nearly ruined my brand new vinyl record of POWERSLAVE. When i took it home and played what would be the first time hearing this song and heard that section (16:53 of this video) where they galloped 3 times with the drums and then changed it up it just blew my mind. I immediately picked up the needle on the turn player and dropped on the record back to that spot like 10 times in a row. Like I said I nearly ruined the record because the needle would end up bouncing every time I placed it back on the record. I actually went back and bought the cassette tape the very next weekend.
