If you love bass, my favorite band always has their bass turned way up. The Warning's song Dust to Dust begins with bass...
Three teenage girls from Mexico, sisters. The Warning. Their 2nd album, Queen of the Murder Scene, is a concept album, which is best listened to live because of the energy of their performance with an audience. Best listened to in the order on said album because it tells a story. I've linked this from their concert at Foro Didi.
Anyway, here's links for your viewing and listening pleasure...

Great reaction! You mentioned the "Egyptian Eddie", that is the cover of Powerslave, the album this song is from. If you ever do the official video for Wasted Years, they show the many incarnations of their mascot Eddie throughout the years. Great song written by one of their guitarists Adrian Smith, it's mostly about their time touring, being away from home. Listen especially to the chorus, great message there. Bruce Dickinson sings it clearly enough you should be able to understand.

Most of the repetition in Maiden songs is actually varied slightly from bar to bar. In the first pass, for example, the bass line will follow the melody, but then in the second pass drop down to thud on lower notes. The intricacy of their harmonies is epic and is worth studying. They don’t just rock. Lol

Consider yourselves followed! The fact that someone so young knows that poem (and obviously what the song is about) has given me some hope in humanity!
Added to the fact you're both appreciative of great music and musicians.
Thank you for making my day a little more cheery!
    Rock on!

Really well done. Brought me immediately back to my own school time. It was summer 1986, schoolyear was going to end soon and we were doing poetry and images in poetry. I'm German and English is my 2nd language. Anway I have been a Maiden fan since 1982 and always was the weird nerdy kid who listens to this strange, noisy, amusical and possibly godless stuff. So as soon as I looked at the page with the exerpts from the poem, guitars flared up in my mind and my mind was reading the words with the rhythm and Bruce's intonation. I could only blurt out "Oh, The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. I know that" although the title was only in a very small footnote at the end of the text. Got some strange looks from my classmates and the teacher, because he never even suspected that I even would have the slightest interest in poetry. I told them about Maiden and the teacher agreed to put a pin in it and do it in the next lesson which would be the last of the schoolyear anyway. Best.English.Lesson.Ever!
I didn't make many new Maiden fans that day, because the Mariner is not the first piece by Iron Maiden anyone should ever hear, especially not the more that 15 minute long live version from "Live After Death", but that was the only one I had. But at least it raised some awareness, that metal isn't just noise. And Iron Maiden are really masters of strong storytelling. That's why I love them so much #UpTheIrons

Well done. Outstanding superlative effort in finding an old Classic from one of the most literate of rock/metal bands. I literally shed a tear on your behalf. To think some young folks would "waste their time" on this as opposed to the made in a factory pop dujour. Well done.

Great idea to just leave the kids to react to it. Some channels with parent kid reactions the parents always seem to impose the reaction on to the kids. This is just pure. And these kids genuinely got a great ear for musical detail. Keep it up!

Ran across you guys by accident, and I'm glad I did. Been listening to Iron Maiden since the early 80's, and believe me when I say they only get better. You mentioned Broadway in a few of you reactions. Their live shows are VERY theatrical.
Try listening to The Trooper, Run to the Hills, Wasted Years, and Flight of Icarus. You might be impressed.
Keep doing what you guys do, you're only going to get bigger and better. Good luck...

I am 54 years old and Iron Maiden is my favorite band. Ancient Mariner is my favorite song. So, I had to come 'czech' out this reaction when it popped up.
First and foremost, Claire, thank your teacher for making you read the epic poem by Samuel Taylor Colridege, s/he had great vision. Had I not been a fan of the band I may never have taken the chance to read it. It wasn't until I was much older than you I took the opportunity when I borrowed my brother's Norton Anthology of English Literature decades ago. Oops, still have it, never returned it ;)
Steve Harris is a very cerebral guy, often times writes about historical events and personas. I've learned a lot from him and he's opened my eyes to things we should read/know.
As he penned, "the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man" Wiser being the key word.
Lastly, I 'shrive' (forgive) you about forgetting the Hermit.

Good job guys, this is one of my 15 year old son's favorite songs! He loves Iron Maiden and has seen them twice in concert already. He really liked your takes on this too... On a side note about reading that poem, I'm impressed that you did that. I was curious about the actual poem myself back in the 80s since i loved this song so much. But that was before the internet so I had to go to a library and research it. But the information about the poem, author, and origin were all written in the sleeve of my cassette tape along with the lyrics, so I knew where to start. I found a book of old English poems that had it. ROTAM is a long poem, very long and much longer than the song! I can see how you wished that you had heard the song before reading it, since I don't think I would have understood much of what was written in it without knowing the modern translation of the song first.

This album came out when I was in high school. I had never read the poem, but I did an essay based on this song for English class. My teacher asked me "Have you ever read The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner?" I said no, but I love the song. That spoken part is quoted from the actual poem I believe. Good job guys. 👍

    Fantastic insight by Claire!
She added her knowledge to the subject-matter, almost narratively and then both kids commented on the aspects of the music which appealed most to them (like many, they were drawn in by the variety of the "Maiden Gallup" sound). Walker's summary of Maiden's incorporation of varying time-signatures displayed his own insight.
    These reviews are really enjoyable.
If Maiden ever comes across this video, they should consider naming their next album "The Repetition" ;)
