When I was around 12 or 13 during the late 90's, I was walking around Walmart in the music section and I saw this album with awesome Egyptian style art work . I picked it up, turned it around and read the song titles. One of them was ''Rime of the Ancient Mariner'', and there began my journey with Heavy Metal. I never looked back.
Very similar with me. Constantly wandering over to the vinyls and stared at the Maiden records. Always made my parents go to the record shop. The obsession was inevitable. 🤘🤘
The mariner's tale begins with his ship departing on its journey. Despite initial good fortune, the ship is driven south by a storm and eventually reaches Antarctic waters. An albatross appears and leads them out of the ice jam where they are stuck, but even as the albatross is praised by the ship's crew, the mariner shoots the bird: With my cross-bow, I shot the albatross. The crew is angry with the mariner, believing the albatross brought the south wind that led them out of the Antarctic. However, the sailors change their minds when the weather becomes warmer and the mist disappears: 'Twas right, said they, such birds to slay, That bring the fog and mist. They soon find that they made a grave mistake in supporting this crime, as it arouses the wrath of spirits who then pursue the ship "from the land of mist and snow"; the south wind that had initially led them from the land of ice now sends the ship into uncharted waters near the equator, where it is becalmed. Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean. Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink. The very deep did rot - Oh Christ! That ever this should be. Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs, Upon the slimy sea. The sailors change their minds again and blame the mariner for the torment of their thirst. In anger, the crew forces the mariner to wear the dead albatross about his neck, perhaps to illustrate the burden he must suffer from killing it, or perhaps as a sign of regret: Ah! Well a-day! What evil looks Had I from old and young! Instead of the cross, the albatross About my neck was hung. Eventually, the ship encounters a ghostly hulk. On board are Death (a skeleton) and the "Night-mare Life-in-Death", a deathly-pale woman, who are playing dice for the souls of the crew. With a roll of the dice, Death wins the lives of the crew members and Life-in-Death the life of the mariner, a prize she considers more valuable. Her name is a clue to the mariner's fate: he will endure a fate worse than death as punishment for his killing of the albatross. One by one, all of the crew members die, but the mariner lives on, seeing for seven days and nights the curse in the eyes of the crew's corpses, whose last expressions remain upon their faces. Eventually, this stage of the mariner's curse is lifted after he appreciates the sea creatures swimming in the water. Despite his cursing them as "slimy things" earlier in the poem, he suddenly sees their true beauty and blesses them ("a spring of love gush'd from my heart, and I bless'd them unaware"); suddenly, as he manages to pray, the albatross falls from his neck and his guilt is partially expiated. The bodies of the crew, possessed by good spirits, rise again and help steer the ship. In a trance, the mariner hears two spirits discussing his voyage and penance, and learns that the ship is being powered supernaturally: The air is cut away before, And closes from behind. Finally the mariner comes in sight of his homeland, but is initially uncertain as to whether or not he is hallucinating. Oh! Dream of joy! Is this indeed The light-house top I see? Is this the hill? Is this the kirk? Is this mine own countree? We drifted o'er the harbour-bar, And I with sobs did pray- O let me be awake, my God! Or let me sleep alway. The rotten remains of the ship sink in a whirlpool, leaving only the mariner behind. A hermit on the mainland had seen the approaching ship and had come to meet it with a pilot and his boy, in a boat. When they pull him from the water, they think he is dead, but when he opens his mouth, the pilot has a fit. The hermit prays, and the mariner picks up the oars to row. The pilot's boy goes crazy and laughs, thinking the mariner is the devil, and cries, "The Devil knows how to row". As penance for shooting the albatross, the mariner, driven by guilt, is forced to wander the earth, telling his story over and over, and teaching a lesson to those he meets: He prayeth best, who loveth best All things both great and small; For the dear God who loveth us, He made and loveth all. After relaying the story, the mariner leaves, and the wedding guest returns home, and wakes the next morning "a sadder and a wiser man". The poem received mixed reviews from critics, and Coleridge was once told by the publisher that most of the book's sales were to sailors who thought it was a naval songbook. Coleridge made several modifications to the poem over the years. In the second edition of Lyrical Ballads, published in 1800, he replaced many of the archaic words.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797-98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. Some modern editions use a revised version printed in 1817 that featured a gloss. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it is often considered a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature. This is what makes Maiden so amazing....musically and lyrically talented beyond belief.
Shalom! I am a black Israeli. I am 52. Been listening to Iron maiden since I was a teenager. Back then, the people of color called me a white boy. I didn't care! I love All there songs!!!!!!!!!! Iron maiden, been my Number one band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anthony Grove he’s listened to bruce era maiden a lot now he should try early maiden with paul or 90’s maiden with blaze it will be something new and different
That cracking is the sound of shipboards creaking on the seas. That part of the song perfectly gives the sense that of a nightmarish ghostship. I also have to mention that this is my favorite Iron Maiden song. I waited nearly 15 years to see them play it live and when I did I was near tears and couldn't even sing along cause of the lump in my throat. Fucking godly performance.
This song was from the first concert I ever saw in '85 (I think). I was 14 years old. It was unforgettable. Good reaction. PS. The cracking is the hull of the ship as it rocked in the waves. A lot of this song was based on the poem 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (originally The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797-98. Check it out. Awesome stuff.
There are literally hundreds if not more people doing metal reaction videos on UA-cam. You sir are not among the best. You are the best! I mean that sincerely. Take it from a guy who has been into Maiden since 1981 and has seen them in concert 3 times. I know 3 times isn't necessarily that many but I saw them at their peak starting with the Powerslave Tour, the Somewhere on Tour and finally the Seventh Tour of a Seventh Tour. Maiden is incredible live. They are all top notch musicians who pride themselves on putting on the very best show possible. From the elaborate stage sets to the state of the art lighting and sound systems they employ to the fantastic level of energy they give to each performance and to the unparalleled consistency they have from show to show and tour to tour. Simply put, Iron Maiden never has an "off" night and they have cultivated one of the most fiercely loyal and massive fan bases in rock history. That fan base of theirs is multi generational and they are a stadium act all over the world. Preston, you do an amazing job with these videos. It really stands out how genuine you are. It's also great to watch your awe and wonder that one feels when they are discovering something new that they really enjoy. You also have great taste in the bands that you like and generally prefer. Love the channel and I will tell as many people I can about it. Peace!
Nick Beggs is a better bassist in my opinion. Having said that, steve is amazing and in addition to bass writes many great songs and I consider him to be the man behind iron maiden (it's his band).
Preston, I wrote on the Powerslave reaction that I smiled in anticipation of you smiling and enjoying the parts I knew were coming. Today you've got me crying tears of joy & laughter. I just love that you totally get sucked right in there and love every second. Your reactions are as good as the performance. God it's good to watch these reactions. That version is awesome I have to say. However, you should really check out the 'Live After Death' DVD, which was filmed on the tour for Powerslave. You get to experience Maiden doing these songs in their hey day. It'' mess with your head even more. Also, check out the CD version of Live After Death for the additional material....and listen to Phantom of the Opera. If you love time changes and transitions, you won't find better! Trust me!!! Oh, and BRUCE DICKINSON - JERUSALEM. Welcome to the Maiden Family Preston. Hope to see you at a show one day and I'll buy you a beer! Haaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiilllllll!!!!
What I like about u and this channel Preston is that you expression is genuine. Your not just talking shit about metal or any thing else. You genuinely are enjoying music that I grew up on. I am 50 years old and still, have this all on my spotify... Nothing more than 70. 80 and some early 90 tunes. Continue your success my man. Epic as u say
When you're watching this you have a almost child like wonderment in your eyes. I can see you genuinely liked it. It makes me want to buy you tickets to their next concert. I've checked out a few of these reaction channels and so far i put you at the top. I like your comments but i especially like that after you make a comment, possibly at a time of a important transition or something else good in the song you go back to the part of the song that was playing right before your comment. A lot of people stop the song and then just hit play right where they left off ruining the flow of the song. Anyway, good job homebrew! keep it up.
So glad you FINALLY got to this song. You are 100% correct, you need to listen to this whole album. It is absolutely epic. Another thing you should do is have the lyrics pulled up as you do. There are so many Easter eggs hidden in Maiden's music. You know this Son!!! Absolutely amazing song, album and band! Their tour for this album was one for the record books, look it up. Peace!
While most people say Killers, or Number of the Beast are Maiden's best albums, for me Powerslave is where they got it all right. I think it is worth considering up with albums like Paranoid, Master of Puppets and Appetite for Destruction in the pantheon of the greatest metal albums.
The song is based off of an old poem. The Mariner killed an Albatros, and as punishment they were stranded at sea. No wind to drive the sails. All died of thirst except for the Mariner. He was chosen to live as an example. The interlude in the middle is the lifeless boat adrift at sea.... Love your reviews! Life long Maiden fan here, happy to finally see them getting some mainstream attention. Back in the day, we were the outcasts that listened to them.
Alexander the great...... You won't regret it! Some of maidens best instrumental parts are in this song. Also..... I really think you should've listened to the live after death version of this song because they sounded way better in the 80's. Especially Bruce.
Amazing instrumentals? Vocal power, and GOOSEBUMPS from Screams? Judas Priest VICTIM OF CHANGES from Unleashed in the East! You gotta react to it Preston!!
@@Duncan2199 ...Halford never quite hit that level on this song like he did on Unleashed in the East. This live performance is just unequalled IMO.. KK and Tipton's solos are insane too!!
@@nickjohnson5202 Is there a live video from Unleashed in the East? Just curious to see if I missed it. I didn't think there was, so that's I recommended those 2, but if there is, let me know please.
I've never seen one from that album. If you find one let me know! That whole album is just Fire. Every song is 5 times heavier than the studio. I always told people you have to see Priest and Maiden live to really "hear" them
I think having heard already 30 years ago, that Unleashed in the East was not raw live record, which explains why it sounds so good. www.loudersound.com/features/judas-priest-eastern-facts-unleashed
Preston, every group has what's called their "Back in black" album. In other words, their album that defines the group, their album that every song on it is greatness. Some of those albums are GnR's "Appetite for destruction", Metallica's "Master of puppets", KISS "Alive", Peter Frampton "Frampton comes alive", Micheal Jackson's "Thriller", AC/DC's "Back in black" and Iron Maiden's "Powerslave". Of course everyone will have their own opinions about this and may not agree with my list, but that's cool. I'm only stating my opinion. Love what you do, bruuhhh!! And do what ya love!!
F##king Green Day is in the R&R Hall of Fame. And, Maiden is not. What a Joke. Their shows are better than any production on Broadway, too. Nobody puts on a better show than them. Nobody.
Chad Crawford That’s actually the point Pthor is trying to make, that Greenday is inthere and Maiden is not ... They could easily get a lifetime achievement award for their amazing work!
If you want to watch an Iron Maiden concert, check out "Live After Death", (it's the concert in Long Beach he refers to at the beginning of this clip). You won't regret it.
Mate, I love watching you watch Iron Maiden. You look like a kid about to receive his favourite chocolate. The excitement in your eyes and face is infectious.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video. Watching your face and reaction as the song progresses is just priceless. It reminds me of the first time I heard it back in 84'. I've seen Maiden 7 times over the years and I have never seen another band perform live that could come close to matching them. It is definitely something to have on your bucket list as you're guaranteed to not be disappointed.
Yeah it was a great bass solo. I like how Orion bass sounded also. U couldn't believe how Cliff could bang his head that hard while he was playing and still do it again the next night that guy always amazed me.
I've been practically begging for the song Caught Somewhere in Time for weeks. Wasted Years. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner are amazing too.
Preston - the boards you hear creaking in the slowed-down part of the song are the ship listing on the waves while going nowhere. This is AMAZING in concert - they have the ship above you shifting back and forth during that part.
Best stage show I've ever seen next to Dio. I really enjoy your reactions man. You see very genuine and it's a pleasure seeing you get hooked like I have been since the first time I've listened to many of the bands you've reacted to. God's speed.
1st Time I heard this in 84’? I think it was and All I could think of was “Man!! They set the bar so high htf will they duplicate it?? Then came “Somewhere In Time”, then “7Th Son” just fuckin WOW!! NEVER EVER A BACKING TRACK IN SIGHT OR SOUND!!! STEVES GALLOPING LINES JUST FUCKIN KILL!!! AT 55 MY BLUETOOTH HEADSET IS MAXED YET STILL NOT LOUD ENOUGH!!!! Nice to see all the love!! Thanks for putting it up Dude!!! Oh sorry I almost forgot, that “Crackling” you hear I think may be part of the affects used to open the show with”CHURCHILL’S SPEECH” And into “ACES HIGH”. Just a thought. Peace🤘🤘
Bro Go watch seventh son tour in Birmingham from 1989 You won’t loose your time but you ll see Bruce Dickinson in his prime smashing all songs Love from Greece
We were supposed to listen to this song in school for English class because we were reading the original story that the song was inspired by, but we had no school that day. Would've been perfect because the day we were supposed to listen to it was the 35th anniversary of the album. :(
We did an assignment in HS on Samuel Taylor Coleridge and when I was in college I did my World History 1 report on Alexander the Great because of the song, did my research etc through books but basically, the song was accurate to the texts of all the history on Alexander. Iron maiden was one of the best storyteller bands ever in my opinion.
Wow! That long? :( I remember driving to the record shop and buying it the day it came out. Come to think of it, I remember driving to the record store for Van Halen's Fair Warning album, lol, that's even older.
@@abiseniyya it was actually me who suggested we listen to it haha :) also i thought it would be cool because most everyone in my english claas thinks metal is just a bunch of screaming, it would've been cool to show them how good metal can sound. :(
I’ve been a maiden fan most of my life and watching people’s reactions when they first hear them takes me back to every concert I’ve been to and every album I’ve brought. This video made me smile ear to ear! Great job...Thank You!!!! Hope you get to see Maiden live this year, it'll be my 15th time (and 2nd time working for them as a stage hand!!!!)
Man you must go see them its amazing i see them 20 times and i tell you they are better and better every year and this tour legacy of the beast was the best of all these guys are over 60 years old they start the 2hours gig with no breaks no talking no shit and they play song after song thill the end . then load their boeing 777 and move to next city/ country and do it again ( the pilot was bruce) wow cool is that?
I totally agree!!! I've seem them 3 times once in the late 80's and twice in the early 90's, and both times my husband and I were able to meet them!! Maiden ALWAYS puts on a GREAT show!! They ARE A MUST SEE GROUP!!!!
Preston i love you reaction at 11:18, it is so real and passionate. I remember myself hearing all those song for the first time. I heard them for the first time live at 2003, barely at my 17 and when i watch your videos, im all emotional again...thanks for your channel
I saw this on magic mushrooms during the Powerslave Tour!! I was front row in the front row , laying on the barricade with all the dry ice and Harris in front me..Then the Eddie mummy came out and was going nuts behind Harris!! I was like helllll yeah!! most awesum time of my life:)
I suggested that song before and somebody actually said to me I couldn't think of a more boring song and make him listen to, are you fucking kidding me......
Check out Iced Earth Dante's Inferno, either Alive in Athens version, or, Alive in Ancient Kourion version. (the latter is the more recent, both are excellent, and different)
Matt is excellent, and my favorite, but, Stu is kicking ass and I like the current stuff every bit as much. He does a good job on the back catalog, and the new stuff is every bit as awesome as it always was. A little different, sure, but that's ok. I liked the Ripper era too. Unlike most others it would seem. A Question of Heaven is excellent as well. But since Maiden referenced classic literature here, I thought of Inferno for the same reason. Another stunning track is Come What May. But Stu did great work on Raven Wing though The End might be a better showcase for him.
A masterpiece is an understatement. The song sections, the parallel guitar work, the flawless vocals, fantastic dynamics all contributing to the story line. Badasss.
Bro! My Fiancée bought me tickets for them September 25, 2019 in San Antonio! Few days after my birthday! I live thirty minutes away! Awesome choice on the video! My favorite heavy metal band! You gotta go see them!

I used to do a week lesson on this poem it included this song

The best reaction channel
Absolutely. I follow a few, but there's always something I don't quite like about the others, but with Preston nothing, just perfect :)
I saw em on this tour and was so pumped when they played this. Set list was killer that day
Bruce Dickinson is known as the
“AIR RAID SIREN”!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
really i love when the people only can smile when hear iron maiden... i love your channel bro
Awesome stuff.
dat face 12:20 - 12:35....

If you don’t go to see Maiden on their tour of the US in 2019...you’re screwing up!
They are the gold standard when it comes to metal, especially live. They always have been.
Peace!
Steve Harris is the best living bassist
Nick Beggs is a better bassist in my opinion. Having said that, steve is amazing and in addition to bass writes many great songs and I consider him to be the man behind iron maiden (it's his band).
How could a dead bassist be any good?
@@mikewilder11 has not dead. I saw him in concert in December he is touring overseas now
@@michaelmoran2421 He said the best LIVING bassist... oh never mind.

Anyway, good job homebrew! keep it up.
Had the privilege to listen this song live. Best day ever!
Every Maiden concert I've been to has always epic. The best story tellers of all. UP THE IRONS!!!
Seventh son of a seventh son next, its insane
@@richardhudson4649 that, and piece of mind. Both perfect, from beginning to end
They put the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" to music. It's amazing!
I read my grandfather's copy of the book because of this song.
Amazing instrumentals? Vocal power, and GOOSEBUMPS from Screams? Judas Priest VICTIM OF CHANGES from Unleashed in the East! You gotta react to it Preston!!
Agreed. For the live version on video, check Live at the US Festival '83, I think or check out the the Live Vengeance '82 version.
Live version from 1984/85 (Life After Death tour) is even more epic ;D
I don't agree. The sound is more raw and heavey in this concert. Imo there live albums sound better since 2000 with the 6 man lineup aswell.
Yep, live after death version is much better. Bruce's voice was so much better. Plus...... No Janick! Everything sounds muffled and noisy with him.
@@martymartin2894 I'll give you 3 trivial reasons why LAD version was better - atmosphere (no cell phones), longer intro into song and Bruce's hair :P
I had this on cassette tape in high school. I listened to it soooo many times. One of the greatest metal albums ever.
Can understand the feeling while you rewind the tape again and again... haha
F##king Green Day is in the R&R Hall of Fame. And, Maiden is not. What a Joke. Their shows are better than any production on Broadway, too. Nobody puts on a better show than them. Nobody.

Preston - the boards you hear creaking in the slowed-down part of the song are the ship listing on the waves while going nowhere.
This is AMAZING in concert - they have the ship above you shifting back and forth during that part.
For your reactions you deserve an invitation by Iron Maiden for the next tour 🤘🏻. Hope they watch it, too! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Wow! That long? :(
I remember driving to the record shop and buying it the day it came out. Come to think of it, I remember driving to the record store for Van Halen's Fair Warning album, lol, that's even older.
I had an English teacher bring up Lord of the Flies when we read the book in class. I put my fist up and yelled "FUCK YEAH!!!"
Your teacher is the coolest, man.
