    Saw in the news that this vehicle takes 4 days to charge from 0 to 100% in a home with basic electric connection. For $35.000 can put a charger in the house that can reduce the time to 24hrs. No thank!! Nuts!!

    that was truly one of the nicest shows ever.Those calm philosophical reflexions on cars,/future in private transportation: a micro salon conference that was extremely enjoyable.I definitely go for Donald's nuanced perspectives in cars, keeping EV, hybrid, internals as the vision for future, each for its own best purpose.Just one little thing: the heaviest Bentley was/is the Mulsanne , at 2,7 tons.But yes, with four guys on board, it will be 3,1 ;-)

  • @stuffhappens5681

    The price is absurd. And, battery development has a long way to go before EVs are practical for mass adoption. It may get there someday. But. nowadays they work best for people who aren’t towing, carrying heavy loads, or driving long distances in cold and/or hilly roads. People resent the government forcing them down their throats, too. I’m sick of Leno, a guy with over 400 mostly gasoline cars, whining about consumer resistance. There are very real, very practical reasons for that resistance. People aren’t as dumb as Leno makes them out to be. Personally, I could live with an EV because I’m retired and live where most everywhere I need to drive to is close by. So I might buy one someday. But I acknowledge that NOT EVERYONE LIVES LIKE ME. So what works for me isn’t necessarily going to work for you. Leno forgets that.

    The concern at this point in time is putting it simply for the point of discussion is, it's a computer on wheels. We accept that from time to time, our electronic devices will freeze up and we have to stop and restart. The FLT channel had this same model Hummer freeze up in traffic. He was stuck in a turn lane with the transmission locked in park. Since everything is electronic, he could not even open the frunk to disconnect the battery to force a restart. The tow tuck arrived and it could not even load it on the the tow truck. For a $100k vehicle this is not acceptable. They eventually found a release for the frunk hidden under the dash and reset the battery so it could at least be limped back to the dealer for repair. Remember this happened in the middle of traffic and was immovable to even get it to the side of the road. I agree with with Mr Osborne where he he said, electric is a future, not the future. This is my opinion, the reader is free to disagree.

    • @andrewhigdon8346
      @andrewhigdon8346 2 роки тому

      An example, just an example. And for the record, the manufacturer is to blame, not the electric vehicle. You have sought out an example to place blame in a misguided attempt at baking the electric car, not the DESIGNERS of said car. Agreed, there is no excuse for that to have happened. Zero excuse. But the fact that it was an electric vehicle is sheer coincidence. Not causation. We’re it a manual transmission and the clutch pedal frozen, you would have had the same occurrence. Would the fault be the internal combustion engine? No. Those who WISH to find fault WILL find fault. On any subject, at any time, and anywhere, fault can be found, when one seeks with such insistence. How many internal combustion engine propelled vehicles have held up traffic and caused problems like in your example, just today, just in the last hour, across America? Dozens. How many electric vehicles have been the cause of same? Good luck finding more than one example in the last 24 hours, much less one hour. At this point you might as well be cheering on the horse and buggy because in short order that is where your argument will lie. I’m not trying to find people wrong or right either, there is no ego here, just facts. I don’t care about being right, and I honestly prefer to be wrong, as being right seldom finds new truths, but being wrong most often does make clearer the truth. And that’s all I care about. The truth.

    • @stevelovescars
      @stevelovescars 2 роки тому +1

      EVs aren’t the only cars with electronic solutions to problems no one asked about. My friend’s Porsche 911 had a dead battery, which was located in the front trunk that had an electronic release. Why “fix” the “problem” of having a manually actuated release for a car’s hood? No one anticipated that a battery could go dead?
      My Alfa Giulia stopped in traffic and became immobile after it would not restart and the drive by wire transmission shifter was stuck in Park, so it couldn’t be shifted to neutral and pushed when the car wasn’t running…
      Just saying, that these computer issues aren’t relegated to just EVs.
      My issue with the Hummer is that it has the same problem the H2 had back in the day. It is too big and much more inefficient than similar vehicles with the same utility. It has tremendous speed and good range out of sheer force of will (huge heavy batteries which then require more energy to move down the road.).
      The irony is that GM was pioneering in aerodynamics, light weight, and efficiency with their EV1 back in the mid-1990’s. The Hummer EV is the complete opposite of that ethos.

    • @Neojhun
      @Neojhun 2 роки тому

      LOL then stop buying any modern ICE car from the last 20 years. BEVs are not much more computerized than a modern Turbo engine (VW TDi Diesel Gate) and automatic transmission. BMS & Motor Controller is way simpler in some ways than managing all the different parts and different Purposes on a Engine & Transmission. Fact is BEVs will be more resilient, tougher and reliable than modern ICE cars. To insinuate the opposite is a Lie. Your opinion is WRONG because you are ignoring FACTs.

    I like both of your takes on the future of electric vehicles being a part of the overall equation, not the only one as many politicians (California….) and so many environmentalists insist upon.
    Considering the costs, not only for the vehicle but folks adding quick-chargers to their homes, 240 outlets, perhaps having to increase the amp service to their homes, the monthly electric bill and/or adding solar, multi-dwelling units, and so much more, it will be prohibitive to a vast majority.

    • @Neojhun
      @Neojhun 2 роки тому +1

      LOL that is absurd nonsense. No such thing as Quick Chargers for homes. The affordable method is a NEMA 14-50 "Dryer" plug delivering 32 amps which is easy for most residential properties. Higher amperage Level 2 240v permanently installed EVSE are only for people who can afford it but not necessary. Typically only 1.5x faster and mainly for Ergonomic Ease of Use. Monthly electric bill will rise but it's still A FRACTION of the cost fuel even if there was an imaginary 70% tax. It's a better deal when you are replacing the cost of fuel. You are soo brainwashed by Political Agenda you have no clue about the electrical engineering. Please stop spreading Nonsense

    • @andrewhigdon8346
      @andrewhigdon8346 2 роки тому

      So what are you comparing then? The price of the gas used to propel your current vehicles, is being compared to the cost of these new electric cars? You said you got a Tahoe Premiere for $60? Maybe used. If that. And if comparing gasoline to electricity there is no competition. How much is a Superbird comparable to yours today? And it’s more fun than a comparable electric car? Define fun. Some forms of fun can’t be recreated. Agreed. I like nothing more than making long smoky elevens down the street. I’m a gearhead’s gearhead. But if you like the sensation of rapid acceleration, even a relatively cheap EV will smoke your Superbird at the drag strip all day long. In fact, even a cheaper EV will smoke some of the fastest ICE powered cars on earth. Your Superbird would require tens of thousands of dollars to approach the performance of a Hellcat. And at that, that’ll cost between $80,000-$110,000. Take an average REAL Superbird, easily $50,000+, and make it as. Fast as a Hellcat, and you’re looking at over $100,000. For that you can buy any of several different electric cars which will slay a Hellcat in the drag strip. That might not equal the fun you are talking about, and my idea of fun includes to rumble of my Hemi engine. But the argument leaves a lot of holes in it. You included expense as part of your argument, and including that was a mistake. One day, when you and I both get to experience the push of an electric car, once they get the visceral experience to approach that of our favorite musclecars, we will both smile and admit we were wrong. That day is not as far away as you might think, and the price will not be the issue for long. The sensation of riding a good quarter horse or cutting horse cannot be replaced by a muscle car either, but even though my grandfather was a legendary breeder of both types of horses and founder of the South Carolina Quarter Horse Association, many decades ago, I can’t keep a thoroughbred cutting horse around for my pleasure. I wish I could could, cause that is visceral muscle that will love you back. Where do you think they got the names horsepower and quarter mile drag race anyway? The truth is that electric cars are simply twice as efficient as internal combustion engines. Would you prefer a horse over a muscle car? I wouldn’t. But maybe 100 years ago I would have been making the same argument against cars. Chew on that for a bit. Get it? My grandfather also was legendary for beach racing and winning with both horses and cars back in the day. He liked both, and was good at both. We should all take a lesson from our elders. Remember. Cars will never replace the horse-drawn carriage. Never. Who can keep stopping and adding some stupid thing called gasoline anyway? That’s just dumb! History repeats itself in some funny ways. Let’s keep this funny before it gets too serious. The more people try to decry electric vehicles, the more antagonistic the climate will become, and it’s already bad enough. We don’t need it worse. Had our culture been the way it is today back in the turn of the century, the baddies would most likely have won WWI. Think about it. It just comes down to efficiency, and on that there is no comparison. And even if ALL of the power used to propel electric cars came from fossil fuels, it would STILL never eclipse the use of fossil fuels by the internal combustion engine.

    The whole EV versus ICE argument comes down to one thing and one thing only. Efficiency. This coming from a hardcore, V8 only, tire smoking, WOT most of the time, gear head. Over the last one hundred years, ALL of the resources known to mankind, more money than mankind has ever known at any given time, has been spent to eek out a few percent here and a few percent there, growing from roughly 15% when the first internal combustion engines were created, and culminating with 40% efficiency, on the very HIGHEST end of efficiency for the ICE. REMEMBER, no expense has been spared to gain even 1% at a time. If the world’s automakers had suddenly discovered a way to gain 5% efficiency, some CEOs would faint. To gain 10% would all but stop the earth on its axis, with very little exaggeration here. Think about that for a minute and tell me I’m wrong. I’m waiting. If I’m wrong, so be it, I LOVE to be wrong, as my chief motivator is the truth. The lengths that automakers go to save ANY percentage on efficiency or emissions is barely calculable, even for a few percentage points. What if they suddenly gained 40 percentage points on efficiency and 100 percent on emissions? They would lose their proverbial shit. Yet, here we are. Those numbers are on the LOW side. An electric motor making 80% efficiency is a poor performer and frankly uncommon nowadays. And don’t even try to insult me by trying to include the manufacture of batteries and the cars themselves and the creation of the electricity. Do the same for ICE cars and your argument becomes a sieve. It’s not even a comparison. Do you really think that mining iron ore is pound for pound or per vehicle much better than lithium? Insult me all you want. Don’t insult yourself or those around you with your foolish argument. Besides the creation of the “fuel” or the of the vehicle itself, the conversion of fuel into energy is DOUBLE, at the very least, with electric motors compared to ICE. IN FACT, one could even throw in erroneous arguments about lithium mining and coal fired energy plants and electric motors would STILL bury any argument about which type of propulsion system is better. Range anxiety, towing problems, are all made comparing apples with dinosaur blood. Make an accurate comparison and you’ll realized there isn’t even a comparison to be made. 85-90% efficiency beats 35-40% efficiency all day, every day. I’ll miss smoking the tires on my modern Hemi wagon, but I’ll still be able to do it, just not as often.

    What's old is new again. Luxury cars were very popular for a very long time because of their elegance, quietness inside. Even mid-level cars like the Ford LTD in the 70s had advertising that bragged about how quiet the car was. And that went away as luxury cars became more sporty, as did trucks with Hemis and exhaust pipes that are 3 inches across. Now there's this which everyone seems to like along with the Ford Lightning.

      I wouldn't call 58% a vast majority. Electric is much more efficient cause gas releases a lot of energy as heat even if it isn't all powered by renewables. Electric pushing a 10,000 lb car probably still probably isn't the best use case though

    • @Charlesb88

      Remember that the various of electricity sources that makeup what charges our EV vehicles can change over time and in the future cars might get more electricity from renewables like solar or wind in the future. Electricity can be made by many different means unlike gas/petrol which comes from just one source, oil pumped from the ground.

    The present problem with electric cars is that "running out of gas" is ignored. If you drove enough you eventually ran out of gas. Disgusted you would walk to a gas station or have a tow truck deliver a container of gas, spend a minute putting it into the gas tank, and then you'd have 30km worth of gas and could almost certainly get to a gas station. How does that work with an electric car? Hours (in the field) to get enough "gas" to get anywhere and then a day to get it fully recharged. This will change. The range of modern electric cars rival gas powered cars but the gas station fill up time must be reduced and it will. But it's not there yet. As far as gasoline powered cars go, that will end. California will just ban gasoline sales, and it'll be over.

      Exactly. It's not magic, still needs a coal or natural gas power plant to generate the electricity. Maybe when all electricity on the planet is generated by wind, solar or water it won't be an energy guzzler.

    Given the many downsides of EVs we would be better off just putting massive taxes on fossil fuels, and then give every citizen an instant rebate equal to the average cost of living increase, then let private industry find the best alternatives. This way those who save more, get to keep more, and those who waste a lot, will pay more. Even if climate was not a problem, fossil fuels create massive particulate pollution, and add to world conflict.

    Yeah little or no maintenance, right wait until you have to replace the battery pack, no offense you are rich so you can get another one, but us working poor would not be able to afford $20,000 plus for a new battery pack and then there is a question of fire hazard with lithium batteries, ask yourself could you get yourself and your passenger out if the EV decides to do a melt down, in a ICE vehicle the average time to get out of a fuel fire is roughly 30 seconds, the average time of an EV is 10 seconds from the time you noticed that white toxic smoke. I believe that we are pushing the technology onto the market to fast, yes we need EVs but there are too many issues that needs to be addressed first, besides the fire hazard, the materials used are really toxic, not to mention that most of the mines are controlled by China and they often use child labor. I am not against EVs ,but these issues will have to be addressed before I would buy them.
