Exactly. Basically what I see is that the hummer is not that great off-road especially with the lockers and air suspension breaking while the Bronco is.
That was intense, honestly the hummer seemed to take the enjoyment out of off-roading. Too many issues in areas where a true off-roader doesn’t struggle that much

Great video guys. I learned two things for sure watching this. 1. Hummer is a status symbol not an offroader. 2. Even at this price point it's still typical GM build quality.
I have a 2018 GMC Denali 3500HD Duramax that weighs in at over 8K pounds. I've never even thought of taking it off-roading. It's NOT made for that. GM's biggest mistake was trying to brand it as an off-road truck. It's NOT. My Denali has excellent build quality as have all my many past GM trucks. It's plain you're not a GM fan. Great video. Actually impressed that the Hummer did as well as it did. The typical Hummer EV owner in reality won’t be attempting anything near this challenging. However, it’s great to see it perform at the edge of its capabilities. Kudos to the TFL team for bringing this unique content to us.
Watching the Bronco go through the Rock garden, and then the Hummer going through really shows how nimble the Bronco really is vs the Hummer which just plowed through.
A couple scratches are easily worth it for GMC to have the only offroad video of the Hummer on the internet. Looked like a painful and stressful test, but it was fantastic to see it perform on a moderate trail vs service roads like you'll see in the ads
This is the second video I have watched with EV vehicles going off road. Notice at the gate keeper that 1 rear tire was spinning but not the other. This was the problem. The motor control software does not simulate a "locked rear diff" action with the two rear motors. Since it didn't spin both rear tires at the same time, it's a failure and will only get you stuck.

I could be wrong, but didn’t I hear Tommy say (toward the end of the video) that he didn’t have the shifter in “low” all the way up. That would make sense why his throttle modulation was so wonky. 27:09, and 17:46 they should drive the Bronco up in “D” and see what it does. Same thing with my kids R/C car, when it is in high the throttle is jumpy. When in low, it responds much slower and controlled. Also, it makes sense that the dash says that “automatic leveling” is not available, when the suspension is maxed on a 25 degree slope. Leveling means to level. 8:46. And any vehicle that gets high centered on a boulder is going to lose traction and get stuck. The Hummer is amazing. The rear street buggy guy knew what to to. Great very video. Don't forget the interior gremlins TFL had with the Bronco when they got that...mainly the roof. Like anything else...always little things to iron out unfortunately

Bronco Badlands arrives this week after a year wait, and that was all I could afford - Hummer way out of my price range, but seeing this makes me feel a lot better about that. Thanks for the validation!
The Hummer is such a stereotypical GM product that is overweight, too big (for it’s supposed intended use and has questionable quality. If I had to guess, the Hummer product manager never intended a ~9,500 lb. truck to actually be taken on mountain trails, knowing that there isn’t a tire made that can overcome the pull of gravity.
Dude I had 252,000 miles on my ZR2 S10 it was always off road no issues not one!! It was my daily driver for 10 years and 252,000 MILES always off-roading always it never left me stranded...
It’s odd to me that he doesn’t try anything else to get that front locker engaged. And it being high sided is 110% user error. They need to give these trucks to people who actually drive these routes all the time for these vehicles to be given the best chance
By 11:45 I had seen all I needed to see about a stock Hummer EV's off-road capability. I was disappointed that the extract mode's considerable ride height mode does not include individual corner height control. I will wait for the third party aftermarket integrators to solve the tire/rim/lift limitation to consider this SUV a true off-roader. Right now it LOOKS off-road, but does not PERFORM off-road.
Thanks guys for actually putting these vehicles to the test. Let us know in the future if there is a courageous Hummer owner willing to take on that trail.
My opinion of the Hummer is that it is concept truck that actually got built. But like most concept cars, it looks cool and has a lot innovation but questionable execution.
To be fair the Bronco has had a lot of recalls and other issues. So not exactly comparable when you have a very early build Hummer vs a more a model that’s been around a year or two now and allowed to iron out more issues.
Thank you all, the whole team for doing your TFL Truck diligence. I would say you were unbiased towards it and that’s what I expect from you. Well done
20:11, perfect example of what actual locking diffs can do, that you can't exactly do with a fake locking diff that works by driving two electric motors at the same speed. The hummer makes it through that just fine still, but a normal jeep, engine replaced with an electric motor, is what a perfect electric off roader would be, and RC crawlers are the best example of this, especially insane stuff like MOA Comp crawlers that have a motor for the front axle, and one for the rear axle, but not one motor per wheel.
Thanks for an amazing and difficult experience. Kudos to Tommy for his off-road driving skill; he’s the best. To me, the takeaway is it’s better to have a fully loaded Bronco AND and fully loaded Bronco Sport than 1 Hummer EV although it IS really stupendous. I was surprised at the quality/tech issues you encountered though. Be interesting if GM has any response about that.
I love that you guys take these vehicles where they are actually worked and tested. In my opinion, the HummerEV is NOT the ultimate off roader at all. The bronco and wrangler rubicon will always do better than the hummer due to the size and weight. I'm pretty disappointed that the Hummer had all of the electronic bugs and failure to engage lockers etc... The lockers in the Hummer don't seem to be a true locker like the wrangler and bronco are equipped with. I think the HummerEV is about as off road worthy as the power wagon - has all the gadgets and the power to do heavy trails but the limit will always be the size and weight. If Hummer was smart they'd make something the size of the H3.
Jeep best offroader? You spelled Geo Tracker with a 6in lift, 33s, drive train upgrade with front and rear lockers, snorkel kit and a cummins 4bt swap wrong (jk)
@@RMC2021 I'm just being an idiot really, for stock or under $10k in mods on top of purchase, Jeep Wranglers, Ford Broncos, and Hummer H3s are probably the holy trinity of modern American offroad SUVs
In the spring you should see if you can do 3 sub 15k off-roaders up red cone and see if they can go against the Bronco on Red Cone. Ideally something like an FJ, H3, and LR3. See if BFgoodrich would sponsor tires. With off-roaders approaching 100k it would be awesome to see if you can get the same capability for under 20k.

That Hummer isn’t even mine, but I was puckering up just watching it get stuck on that rock.. I’m a Coloradan stuck in Virginia right now and you guys always make me miss the trails there.
This hummer is ideal for rock flattening. USArmy needs those green hummers badly. Super for parades. Looking tough at groceries. And the most important: everything works perfectly on this vehicle, when parked.
Saw a guy taking his new Hummer up Curtis Canyon (unimproved dirt road rather than a real Jeep trail like Red Cone) in Jackson, WY two weekends ago. I was coming down, so didn’t get to see how it faired, but I was happy to see one actually out there getting dirty with an actual owner. You guys should find that guy and see what he thinks!
The Bronco keeps growing on me more and more. The vehicles are just so different, and almost purpose built. GM can scream offroad capability all they want, but the Hummer will never compare to the Bronco on rough terrain like you guys were on -> weight, width, COG, and even ease/reliability of systems. I have a feeling I will personally NEVER see a Hummer out on any trails, maybe a gravel road or a campground. And even thats a remote possibility unless campgrounds install charging stations and infrastructure... out in the middle of nowhere.
Yeah..I owned a 2017 Rubicon and really enjoyed driving it (both on and off road)! Now, however, i own a Badlands Bronco and can honestly say that it’s the best vehicle that I’ve ever owned in terms of enjoyment! That Hummer is going to fail during an off road adventure at some point (assuming that someone is crazy enough to try it) and will be a b*tch to recover!
The Hummer's size and weight is always going to make it a compromised Off-roader compared to something like a Bronco or a Wrangler. I would love to see GM put all that off-road tech into something smaller, even smaller than the Hummer SUV.
Can you change the ride height while in drive? I ask because in my vehicles they switch between 2x4 and 4x4 quicker when I’m in neutral. I wonder if GM did the same thing with the Hummer ride height software. Great video!
Looks like the new Hummer might be a little short on standard mechanical brake capacity. When Tommy went across that creek at the end, a whole bunch of steam came from those wheels around the brakes.
Behind an 18” wheel, you’re not fitting *that* huge of a brake rotor. It may have the capacity to clamp & lock the tires but repeatability or longevity on longer grades with 9500lb before loads….
That Bronco is just awesome. Ford did a great job designing that vehicle. The Hummer looks great , but suffers from first year model issues. I wish Toyota would refresh the FJ to compete with the Bronco.
@@blang38 The issues the Bronco suffered were nothing like this, at worst it had some issues with the roof with hard tops, if that's the worst thing I can remember from it's first few years than I can say with confidence the Bronco was pretty well made and is at the moment nearly perfected.
@@blang38 I agree with you. Most new models have issues. I only spoke on the Hummer issues because this video is about the Ford Bronco and the GM Hummer and in this video the Hummer was having issues and not the Bronco, so that was the reason for my comment. I'm a huge Toyota fanboy so I have no dog in this fight and I know the first year Tundra has had problems also, so the comment was base off the title and issue the Hummer had in this video vs the Ford. I hope that help users understand more about my original comment.
"Make the best off-roader ever!" What he heard, "Make it wide as a heavy duty and weigh almost five tons and make sure the off-road stuff doesn't work."
There are novel features on the Hummer like auto-airing down the tires, rear wheel steer, suspension height adjust, crab mode, etc but I would never consider this vehicle for off-road. The Bronco would be my choice, if pressed. That said, I will never give up my '03 T4R, which I built for offroad and owe nothing on it. 🙂Thanks for the video.
I think the tires don't air down automatically. It just gives you a signal when the desired psi is reached, but it looks like you have to let the air out manually, at least that's what it looked like on the video.
34:54 those brakes or something was really hot. That was a bunch of steam. Also the torque limiting that thing employs seams a bit aggressive. Maybe because the front diff lock had failed and it knew it?
This 9400 lbs hummer hits obstacles hard!! Even so, 3mph or so of momentum is the difference in many vehicles between making progress or not. Add the steepness, momentum is key, that's what suspension ground clearance and skid plates are for. Imo this hummer is slightly better than a softroader.
Wouldn't air suspension not be available on uneven ground? I seem to remember that being the case when I had my grand cherokee. It's a very finicky system that has many criteria that need to be met before you can engage it.
Noice contrast on the Gatekeeper.. A working switch would help.. other then the self recovery of a winch or the planks. try a spotter with large safty cones to mark a spot? camera does look great.. the motors on wheels what do you do if one burns out? Did you forget the weber grill and dogs buns and soft drinks or water .
Interesting video. The one thing that Tommy mentioned about the Bronco tires being bigger isn't exactly correct. They are a little wider, but the Hummer tires are actually about half an inch taller. I looked up the Goodyear tire specs.
I find it funny that the hummer is essentially neutered from the factory unless you launch it. You would figure a vehicle that makes enough torque to launch 9000 pounds like the hummer would make enough power to climb up a curb... After the mishap when y'all picked it up and this video, I wouldn't trust an all electric GM vehicle as far as I could throw it.
It may need a software update. And when it says "leveling unavailable" does that mean all of the ride adjustment, or just "leveling". I thought I heard somewhere that leveling is different. And maybe some switches are inactive depending on the mode it is in
Why can't they make it so it simply engages on demand ? The Bronco does it literally the second you click the button without any errors or hesistation.
yeah, I have been going down similar mountain roads that had tight turns and zero place to run off extra speed, my 5000lbs truck was sliding, just a bit - double the weight and I would have gone straight over the cliffside..
No way I would consider the Hummer, almost like GM released it before it was ready. I've been driving Toyota trucks for 30 plus years and will continue to because they do it right. Thanks for the honest reviews, really enjoy all your channels.
I wonder whether Tommy was using the Regen on Demand paddle on the descent. That adds a significant amount of regenerative braking, especially when in "L."
I’m sure GM engineers are developing software updates to increase the height of the vehicle while off-roading which will add another $50,000 to the vehicle's MSRP. Great video
So now you gotta get down and then how much charge do you have to get the next charging station to get home looks like you will be in the wild for quiet a while

It is a real testament to those tires to hold up so well off-roading with a 9000lb vehicle.
Crab mode is super useful. It stops the back dropping off narrow off camber tails. Literally cannot be passed safely without it in some cases.
That was intense, honestly the hummer seemed to take the enjoyment out of off-roading. Too many issues in areas where a true off-roader doesn’t struggle that much
The shorter version (GMC Hummer EV SUV) might be better it has better approach & departure angles and is shorter between front & rear axles..

Not one single person who buys the new Hummer will take it on a trail like that. However it is impressive what that nearly 5 ton vehicle made it over. The new Hummers will be seen more in front of Gucci stores than they will be in front of trail signs.
In this case , i can’t see why did GM put all these off road capabilities on it ? Cuz no one gonna take it on hard trails

I agree with your #1 thing learned but not your ? ? #1.

Methinks, GM's Quality Control is up to it's USUAL STANDARD !!!
I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again… simplicity and being lightweight is the key to off-roading.
So no electric off-road vehicles then? With batteries, weight will always be an issue.
@krane15 nah cause the wrangler hybrid is amazing and I saw that the EV version will be just as good with about the same weight as the hybrid

Yes sir. Read somewhere once “light equals might” off road. The less crap I took white me the better my rig would do.

You guys should get an award for cinematography.
The Hummer looks like it would be really good on a flat dirt road.

The Hummer is such a stereotypical GM product that is overweight, too big (for it’s supposed intended use and has questionable quality.
Is that even a locker or an electronic algorithm? It looked like not even the rear was locking, hence the suspected algorithm.

The hummer is something you don't really wanna take off-road it's 120k🤦♂️and they got it stuck on a rock

And there's a dozen thing the Hummer can do that the Bronco can't. The Hummer is really in a class of its own.
Don't get your panties all twisted up, compare apples to apples
The Hummer's size and weight is always going to make it a compromised Off-roader compared to something like a Bronco or a Wrangler. I would love to see GM put all that off-road tech into something smaller, even smaller than the Hummer SUV.
Lesser models are coming with over 600hp. Size should be smaller because of different battery.
You guys should’ve brought a third vehicle and had that be a Rivian and a fourth one to be the last generation gas hummer
Can you change the ride height while in drive? I ask because in my vehicles they switch between 2x4 and 4x4 quicker when I’m in neutral. I wonder if GM did the same thing with the Hummer ride height software. Great video!
Glad to see the only EV hummer to ever go off-road in real-time.

I thought it was just the front locker that wouldn’t engage but neither was working when you were stuck.
Wouldn't air suspension not be available on uneven ground? I seem to remember that being the case when I had my grand cherokee. It's a very finicky system that has many criteria that need to be met before you can engage it.

Interesting video. The one thing that Tommy mentioned about the Bronco tires being bigger isn't exactly correct. They are a little wider, but the Hummer tires are actually about half an inch taller. I looked up the Goodyear tire specs.
For the $150,000 that Hummer would cost me I'd expect it to make me lunch when we got to the top. Bronco all the way!
And maybe some switches are inactive depending on the mode it is in
Fantastic video from the TFL team. Great from beginning to end, well done.
According to the Owners Manual you have to hold the Locker Switch down for 5 Seconds before it turns on
Why can't they make it so it simply engages on demand ? The Bronco does it literally the second you click the button without any errors or hesistation.
Going down Red Cone with the Hummer looked kind of like a runaway semi. looked scary too me.
yeah, I have been going down similar mountain roads that had tight turns and zero place to run off extra speed, my 5000lbs truck was sliding, just a bit - double the weight and I would have gone straight over the cliffside..
