Parabol is the calm beginning (in our mothers womb, our birth), parabola is life itself (the chaos of life), the calm end to parabola is our life’s end. The song is a representation of our life as a parabola, we start at 0, hit our peak/trough in life, then end at 0 again. Genius song.
Lots of songs are like this tho, it just sounds a bit pretensious now.

True story. Not long after this album came out, my friend and I did shrooms one night. I took like 4 grams and a couple of hours later was peaking. My friend and I were in front of my computer and we decided to watch this video. I was entranced the entire time. At the end, when the floating eyes starting moving up the guy's legs, I felt my whole body start to vibrate, which intensified as the eye moved up his body. When the eyes meet and form the third eye, it felt like time stopped and and right as it rises and the light leaves the guy head, all of a sudden my perspective had changed and I was looking down from the ceiling at my monitor and my friend and I's backs as we are sitting in chairs leaning forward and watching the video. I panicked and next thing I know I'm jumping up and throwing my chair backwards. I didnt know how to process what happened and spent the rest of the night in my room alone, in bed, thinking that I had just died. I literally astral projected for the first time watching this video. Will never forget it.

I'm 67 years old and an old head at that (see the rock bands of the 60's & 70's). I've never got down with the get down with TOOL before, but this makes me want to go a Fitness Gym and work out. I might die in the process, but I will die with a smile on my face and a five-pound weight in each hand!

This is awesome, but to make sure that you don't rip yourself off, and you get the full experience you need to listen to parabol first and then go straight into parabola... Then you will be spiritually complete LOL
Each one of the band members is critical to producing their portion of the music. I've heard this, Some of the songs actually start with the drum section. Imagine that! Writing an entire song based only on the drummer's tape that he's already worked up! It's always incredible. It makes TOOL...TOOL. 🤘🙂🤘
From what Maynard has said they compose each "section" basically alone, without input from the other members. Like not even being in the same state, then the compose it together. I think He talked about it on JRE

This track automatically does a flip on the previous track, the intro which is quiet. Then the song has the typical midway shift that Tool like to do.

I saw King Crimson (formed in 1968 - had to look that up) open for them years ago and you could hear some of the influence they had on Tool
This is one of the first songs I got into from tool what really intrigued me was the almost sacred choice of words for the lyrics

Prabol and parabola are probably two of my favourite songs of all time I love how Maynard (the singer) let’s the instruments speak for themselves in all of the songs
They have no trash. I believe each member of Tool are perfectionist kind of people. Heard guitarist Adam Jones say he was drawn to vocalist MJK because he likes to do things correctly and of high quality.

Idk you could draw a lot of inspirations from earlier psychedelic rock bands like pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, or later Beatles releases. But its very unique that Tool incorporated all those styles into metal.

Who influenced Tool: King Crimson and the Melvins come top of their list. MJK was also in the art house punk band called Green Jello which had a massive influence on his early performing style. Fantômas, Devo, Bill Hicks, Rush, Helmet, Faith No More, Bauhaus, Meshuggah, David Bowie, Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo, and Jane's Addiction are mentioned by the band members amongst others.
