    Good point on fatphobia/skinnyphobia and how quickly people can quickly assume negative things about others when we do have certain goals for our bodies (I've been accused of "overcompensating" when I first started lifting and trying to gain weight).

    I'm Anorexic, but i also suffer from Bulimic symptoms. I'm an artist, Sometimes, I post thumbnails with my hands in them, I cannot tell you how many times I have edited my hands to make them look nicer, I See this horrible blob holding a pen so i edit it until I like it. Does this make me fatphobic? No. This is My own illness and personal biases towards MY OWN BODY. People who label others as fat phobic when they are merely supporting someone's journey towards being healthy is so...stupid honestly. I'm not in recovery yet, But this wednesday as im posting this, hopefully I will be able to start my journey of slowly getting better and gaining some weight back.

      I wish you the best of luck and all the strengh in the world. It's gonna be hard work but so worth it. I've been in recovery for a few years. It's gonna be hard to always stay vigilant to not fall back into those behaviours. So please be open with someone in your close sozial group who will also be keeping an eye on you. Ex. When my depression gets worse I stop eating. My partner bring me food I like and small portions over the day. And they never pressure me, but just remind me.

      YOU'VE GOT THIS!!!! You can do this 😤 Even when there are bumps along the way, just remember you are still progressing. Just because you hit a few potholes while driving doesn't mean you stop your car! You just keep continuing your journey :)
      ETA: Something I've been really enjoying is practicing centering my thoughts on body neutrality, centering my thoughts on enjoying what I'm doing and who I'm with, rather than how I look. It's a struggle but correcting and rephrasing my negative thoughts consistently has helped my quality of life.

    Thank you for addressing the whole appearance versus health aspect. I have a body that has always been pretty in the eyes of society (90-60-90 anyone 🙄). Yet I am so far from health with several severe illnesses like strong asthma and debilitating chronic migraines among others... I'm absolutely sure that there are millions of overweight people in the world who are healthier than me. Never judge a book by its cover is a really good saying for a reason.
    Also you're so right with your thoughts on the constant throwing around of "you're this phobic, you're that phobic" taking away from the actual phobic comments and systemic problems in e.g. our health care system.

And to your point about people doing what’s right for them, as an older woman who is very enthusiastically weight training, I can say that my primary goal isn’t aesthetics. It’s to ensure that I stave off for as long as I can the frailty that robs old people of their independence.

    your strength truly is being diplomatic and communicating effectively. you get your point across without sounding preachy or condescending and you can tell it comes from a place of empathy and good intentions. i agree with you on the whole, but i do think there is nuance to these things that people completely gloss over. for example - you post a picture of yourself and like how you look - but why? where do those preferences come from? what does our appearance communicate about ourselves and our lives? people have the right to autonomy over their bodies, and there is a sociological effect of our appearance as well. both are true!

  • @heliumq

    I often think that people project their own insecurities onto other people way too much. Neutral comments are so easily misconstrued into the negative, and concerns can be assigned biases that were never intended. Unfortunately it usually takes one-on-one conversations to clear such things up, which is pretty much impossible on the internet. But more awareness usually helps realizing that external judgments can be much more indicative of the self than others.

    I do agree with you on a lot of things you said…but, okay, Chloe really didn’t do anything wrong. My main issues comes from ED recovery spaces, it’s so triggering to see someone go from an underweight body to the same thing and claim recovery, that does make promote body dysmorphia I’d say, and so many people will use their (dangerous) advice because they think they can recover into an ED body too, like Em_fit or Katie, it’s really triggering. That’s part of why I can’t watch Zoe, to me, the parts of her saying that she eats SoOo much, but really only eats twice a day, so of course it seems like more, bother me. She’s playing both sides and to me, it just kind of feels wrong. She has a much bigger appeal then say, Michelle McDaniels for people with restrictive EDs, because she has one and recovered into one. I get that it’s an ED’d persons bodies problem, but that’s who she built her audience off of, the lack of awareness of that is so wrong. So is her saying stuff like she forgot to eat carbs for 6 months or slim leg videos that are body checks. It’s someone who is possibly disordered making content for disordered people that won’t help them at ALL. And her saying stuff like, “oh starving makes you GAIN weight” and that being the main issue is terrible. Why not say it’s bad because it makes you feel terrible or could kill you? Her content also really isn’t high quality, sorry but it’s not. The quality and the citations and the lack of data is concerning, but the reason she’s so popular is because of her “recovered body” with Chloe, it’s an exercise Chanel with the goal of about you to lose fat and build muscle. Someone with anorexia isn’t going to use it, because Chloe is someone with an outwardly healthy body, that’s beautiful, and also not thinspo. That’s why her making it the way it is isn’t bothersome. That’s why when Hanson makes videos about ability, but only has a few about weight loss, no one gets mad. That’s not the point. But people come to Zoe because they want quasi recovery her way, and that’s where my issues lies with her. If she was outwardly pro Ana, at least someone like me, trying to recover, could avoid it. But then she preaches self love, and so it’s going to reach vulnerable people, along with a crowd of disordered people. That’s my issue with her, and yes, it does promote dysmorphia.

    • @Ekklesia2680
      @Ekklesia2680 10 місяців тому +6

      I agree with you. Zoe does pay both sides. She prays self love but constantly talks about how to fast to lose weight and her most watched videos are of her crying at a camera because her already very normal sized body is too fat in her opinion and body checks. Then she creates commentary videos judging other people all high and mighty like she has found the answer to the weight loss equation??? She reacted to a criticism video a while back. Her reaction to criticism was literal CRYING. Just today she (20th December 2023) she uploaded a short called the curse of skinny fat. Meaning you have a small frame but you´re a little "puffy". Babe. THIS IS NOT SELF LOVE AND THIS IS VERY MUCH NOT A CURSE WHAT What tf does the curse mean. Omg you can literally have a normal smal frame with a higher fat percentage how is that a curse WHAT

    • @miavagener265
      @miavagener265 9 місяців тому +5

      @@Ekklesia2680 You said everything so well! That’s exactly why I don’t like her, she hasn’t found some magical secret to weight loss, she dieted herself down to being underweight and that’s why people love her, they want to do the same and recover like that. Fine. If it was just that then it wouldn’t be as dangerous, but playing both sides is wrong, and she should be stopped, especially the “I was fat thing” I get she probably does have a case of body dysmorphia, but you can’t say that stuff while also having a disordered audience, what happens if someone is in that body while active in and ED? What if that’s their recovery body? Why promote IF to a disordered audience, she needs to be actually careful

  • @luz9719
    @luz9719 10 місяців тому +3

    I partially agree with you. I think you are right but in the end everything comes down to how you are phrasing it. I had anorexia for many years and then I gained too much weight because of depression and the medication I was taking. Right now I am on a weight loss journey, and it makes me happy every time I lose 1kg. That doesn't make me fat phobic, I don't hate on fat bodies and on fat people. I do hate my body but it has always been the case, no matter my weight. Now, the thing with ZoeUnlimited is that I felt very triggered watching her old videos. It was the way she spoke about her own body that reminded of my self hatred and it felt wrong. However, I have seen many people online who speak about weight loss in a healthy way. It is important to be careful and to approach the subject carefully because it is a very delicate one.
    Then we have to look inwards and see how we really feel towards fatness. I hate it on me. I was taught to hate being fat. I was taught it is pretty to be skinny and when I was unhealthily skinny people preaised me for it. Now that is fatphobia. See? Just like we have internalised misoginy we can have internalised fatphobia without being aware of it.
    We have to do what is healthy and good for our bodies and our minds. For any weight loss or gain journey I recommend to go to therapy to talk about your feelings too. That way, we can learn to love ourselves more.

    Great video and great points. I've come to agree with the idea that *sometimes* the broader discourse in so many facets of the online world seems to pathologize everything (not always the case, just sometimes). We live in a moment that has a very binary understanding of things and how our actions fit into some broader scheme. As you said, being told that if you want to have a heavy but lean and muscular physique you're either/both fatphobic/skinnyphobic - or maybe you have your own goals for your own reason, agency outside of that dichotomy? It's a shame that isn't an accepted notion more often, I think there are many people operating outside that framework as they just have goals for their body and life.

    Here's a thought though.... what if by looking the way you want to look then has a profound effect on those around you for example, if you are morbidly obese, 500lbs etc, we all know this is not healthy. No one van argue that fact and someone at some point is going to have to care for that person, resuscitate that person preform life saving treatment at thr cost of the tax payer etc. When do we draw the line here. Should we sugar coat it because they are happy with the way they are? There's always extreme points to this argument and somewhere I think there will always be room for discussion. Videos are done based on viewer requests/submissions, and given that 90+% of viewers are women, it has made sense to cater to majority audience, whom typically request content from fellow women content creators since that is what they are consuming themselves.
