Thank you for mentioning that eating disorders are far more complex than one’s relationship to food and weight. These disorders have some of the highest mortality rates compared to other mental health issues (not that it should be a competition). Influencers should be held accountable for the quality of their content. They are, after all, trying to “influence” people. They may be in the throes of the disorder themselves. I am glad that other influencers such as you and Abbey take the time to reflect on such content and share alternative points of view.
Sodium is an essential electrolyte in the body. It is as important as potassium. When its low, you are predisposed to seizures, coma and extreme confusion. When patients have low sodium, we have to replace it to the normal level, so yes, sodium is extremely important.
Everyone was telling me to avoid salt especially because I am overweight. However I have low blood pressure and My doctor put me on salt tablets for POTS and I feel sooo much better!
Hey @@AtsircEcarg I was about to write that! I haven't been particularly restricting my sodium intake, never was a topic for me, but when my doctor recommendend salt tablets to me for my low blood pressure I was shocked. Isn't salt the devil? 😅
Bread isn't bad but for some people (me) it's a delicious, non-filling food that I could eat and eat and eat. If I want to avoid body slamming hundreds of extra calories, I need to be intentional about eating it.
Video Notes: Broken record once more (shock) but it's good to see you diving into more sensitive mental health topics, always approached with the level of empathy and care we expect from you. It's been great to see your progression with how effective you’ve approached these topics in the past couple of years, and I know it's a skill that will continue to develop from you. As for the "waffle" at the end, all points I agree with, despite not something I put in practice for myself, especially the size and strength comparisons to others.
I've find it so hard. My body doesn't tolerate carbs. I get bloated, retain so much water. After watching Abby's videos, I felt like maybe my eating is disordered. After a week I felt like crap trying to eat bread and rice. Important reminder to listen to your own body.
As always thank you Harry for your common sense take on all these things. I love that you always keep your focus on health, physically and mentally. Abbey is deffo really good, but you are beyond a doubt one of the very best advisors on UA-cam. ❤
For me, bread if not consumed with fiber and protein will lead to glucose spikes. So I try to be smart about how I consume things. I think there are some things that will be true for most people but also that diet should be individualized for different people.
Oh, Harry..... I really love you for this. You really nailed it with how toxic these videos can be. I find all of your content so valuable and informative but ones like this have me yelling"yes!" at my screen so much people nearby might think we're dating 😉Keep up the great work and if you ever need a career change, I could see you as an amazing Eating Disorder therapist.
I feel so much sadness when I see women look at food as an enemy... Food is nourishment for body and soul. Great video Harry! Hope you are having a good one!
Thank you once again for making an amazing video about a very real fitness issue! And I agree, bread is delicious - I don’t fully understand why it’s the carb source that was demonized 😢
To me it seems impossible that daisy is unaware of her audience. On her home workout videos the number of people referencing “secretly” doing the workouts in their room says all you need to know. The comments are incredibly transparent and I think her intentions are too.
Thank you :) I wanted to pursue this path but it would involve many more years at uni which isn’t realistic, sadly! I ended up getting qualified in coaching psychology/life coaching to be able to work with people in a certain respect :)
I always have so many thoughts on your videos! I love bread, it’s okay to take a day off, and overall I think people should share less of their preps for photo shoots and diets for fat loss. I may share a meal or two, but I think the problem is when you have an audience like Daisy they’re likely to think what she does is what they need to do, and no two people are the same.
See...I love bread. I love bread a lot. I need to make my own now, because what gluten does to me is 1; bloating and hampering digestion 2; it worsens my depression *a lot*. I did not know the second one before but it is a thing. .__. Store-bought glutenfree bread does not taste like bread so...meh.
I used to watch Abbey but stopped after she claimed that milk, weetabix and added sugar on top is a balanced breakfast. Not where I live. Where I live, it goes against so many official nutrition recommendations (and if followed the recommendations, the meal would be balanced if some fruit/berries were added, the sugar taken out and maybe added some protein source). But on that: I find these nutrition (both foreign influencers and foreign registered dietitians) difficult on a global scale. Because there are so many cultural and regional aspects to food. Again, where I live, the food culture, which food is available and which diseases are more common in population is completely different to another country on the other side of the world. And it's scary that people here take their nutrition recommendations from someone living super far away and saying their recommendations from their point of view.
I have no idea who these ‘influencers’ are. I think people need to unplug. Delete the app. Tok sounds radically toxic. No good for anyone since we are all on the spectrum of one disorder or another. This is helpful to listen to. ❤
You are more than fine the way you are ❤! That is a powerful statement! Thanks for this video, Harry! You are amazing for putting these videos out. We need more videos like this out there!
Idk 🤷♀️ I went through a period of disordered eating. It was kinda bad. Honestly, getting into strength training really helped me break out of it. I realized how awful it felt skipping meals, or eating half portions. I couldn’t progress, or even worse hurt myself if I didn’t eat enough. Now 6 years later, I’m a healthier 170 lbs and so much stronger than when I was 120lbs
I started really focusing on my salt when I started my cut 11 weeks ago, sometimes I even have one glass of salt water before the gym. It helps tremendously with my performance, I was able to progress in strength each week during the cut. I’m not saying this is only due to salt intake, I also upped my protein to 2.5-3g/kg bw, so many factors probably contributed to being able to progress. But it definitely helps :) When it comes to visual progress, I only compare myself to myself using pictures of myself. Comparing your body to others can be so damaging to your body image
A short person will definitely need to eat less than 1500 kcal per day in order to loose weight. What the hell with this arbitrary number? Why 1500 is the devil's limit? If you want to loose weight you need to sacrifice something. Healthy food is not necessarily low cal. It's almost as if Abbey is trying to keep everyone fat so she can be the only skinny one.
“how are women supposed to be comfortable in her own skin” SHES NOT. that’s the point. women are not supposed to be happy with themselves. i’ve had tons of experience with EDs and it’s irresponsible of these people to broadcast such dangerous habits. also, i’ve got a bit of vitriol towards anyone that purposely denies themselves bread. i’m a late diagnosed celiac and i would do anything to eat bread again.
Great video!!! Fabulous feedback. I'm a red meat, bread eating, salt intake fan. I have to make sure I get enough salt and electrolytes because I deal with painful leg cramps at night.
influencers are not to blame for people with disorders self destructing. Trauma and toxic family dynamics and an abusive society are usually way more the driving factors.
I agree 100% with you and abbey, however i do feel that abbey comes across judgy. I think it has to do with her tone and body language. Love all of the videos ive seen of yours, great job!
I actually really liked your "waffle" towards the end Harry ... spot on and thank you for this video and I'm sure it's been valuable for people to watch and food for thought (pardon the pun!) :)
Celebrities of all sorts have been promoting, either directly or indirectly, eating disorders. I am 57 and was anorexic as a teenager and I remember looking at all the magazines of all the super skinny models and feeling "inferior" if I didn't look like them. I still battle the mindset but the voice is more of an occasional whisper vs a scream. I had dieted myself down to 73 pounds at 5'3". I feel for all the people who battle body dysmorphia and eating disorders. Unfortunately, there are even more venues to promote this in various ways for men and women alike. Thank you for getting this message out. The steroids usage of young kids is even scarier. Young men are losing the ability to manufacture their own testosterone in their 20s! Sorry, I went on a bit of a rant. Love your content!
Hi Harry, I hope this day finds you well :-) question: what would you consider excessive volume? Are you speaking of sets, number of exercises in one training or a little of both? Thanks :-)
I haven’t watched a vid of yours in what seems like forever! Probably coincides with having worked out far less this summer than I had planned on. Who’d have thought that having 3 kids at home would make that more difficult? 😏 I’ve been having a really hard time not beating myself up for missing so many workouts. Most weeks I’ve been lucky to get in 3. It’s really nice to hop back onto this channel and be reminded that berating myself doesn’t do any good. Restriction and guilt aren’t going to help. One thing you’ve said in previous vids has stuck in my head.. when you’ve talked about regretting missing out on family and loved ones lives/time because you felt you had to workout. Ive definitely remembered that lately and there have been many days where I decided to play with my kids instead of doing my workout. I do hope to be back to 5-6days a week again soon, but thank you for being such a gentle place to land!
Nice work Harry although the title worried me slightly. I thought you were suggesting Daisy and Abbey were both toxic but thankfully it's only the former as Abbey is typically very responsible about encouraging a healthy well-rounded diet, plus I should've suspected it was click-bait becasue because as a nutritionist she's an expert and not merely an 'influencer'. Thanks as always for your insightful and thoughtful 'waffling'.
He's had multiple videos on Bret Contreras and Ryan Read calling out sexist behavior, has covered Athlean-X, Joel Seedman, etc. However, with 90+% of the audience being women and videos being based on audience submission, it's mostly women influencers who get covered.
