this guy is so nice compared to any oral examiner I've dealt with. My examiners always kept digging and trying to get me on every little thing. I found out quick that if they ask a yes/no question, for the love of God, just answer yes or no - don't volunteer more info than they're asking.
The one I had would do the opposite. He left me open questions and let me brief over everything I knew, then if I was lacking, he asked me specific questions. It was quite nice because it made it go by quickly if I covered everything he was looking for.
Gary is a character but very knowledgeable when it comes to ifr and glass. He’s very soft spoken in his online presentations but much more vibrant in his in person presentations. Not crazy for his personality as he’s a bit full of himself but I don’t hold that against him. He’s not a bad guy and I won’t stop my opinion on his personality interfere with gaining the knowledge he has. He does care about helping make better pilots.
The yes/no is true for any interview. Never dig yourself a hole.
No idea how my previous comment ended up on this channel. That’s strange. It was not even relevant to this video.
I didn't know the definitions for From (FM) and Becoming (BECMG) on a TAF so I looked it up if anyone else is interested.
AIM 7-1-31 states the following:
The FM group is used when a rapid change, usually occurring in less than one hour, in prevailing conditions is expected.
The BECMG group is used when a gradual change in conditions is expected over a longer time period, usually two hours.
When I first started my flight training I didn’t understand why people were so worried about the AIM when we have the FARs
Now that I’m working towards my instrument rating I’ve realized how valuable of a tool the AIM is
Well im 2 years late but thanks for actually saying that. I did my Private in Germany and i believe we dont use FM there? But BECMG is just a normal change...So yeah...thanks for letting me know 2 days before my Checkride ^^
Why can’t I find a DPE this nice… 😂
When you apply to be a DPE you'll be able to utilize all your mock checkride videos and show that you're cut for the job. Genius
“From my perspective you already passed.”
“Great, that was quick. Thanks for meeting with me today. If you could just sign here?”
Basically as long as you hit the final approach fix while in Imc then break out to vmc during the approach after you hit the FAF, you can still log the approach for currency
Just passed my instrument check ride in Alaska 2 days ago.
🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
Why are you watching this if you already passed?
@@DrPilotRedC I like to rewatch to stay current with the cluster fuck of information courtesy of the FAA
Congrats
@@DrPilotRedC good point why watch something you already know
“Not a great idea, as far as ideas go” 😂😂
Plz do ppl oral exam I need it!
Awesome video!
One thing that wasn’t mentioned is that you can can also do your 6 month instrument currency entirely in an AATD without an instructor present. 61.57 (C) 2. No excuse to ever be out of currency. Procedurally, you can shoot many more approaches in an AATD than you can do in an airplane in the same amount of time and you don’t need foggles.
You can also perform 99% of an IPC in an AATD. The only thing you need to get in the airplane for is the Circle to land. 61.57 (d) 2 ii.
Thanks! Due to this "pandemia" 🙄 I'm almost running out of my instrument currency! I've been practicing approaches on my sim at home with Xplane 11 (even though simulators are pretty terrible at replicating the "real feel" of an aircraft, they were made for exactly this!). Now, I just need to find a school that will allow me to rent their AATD by myself, to log the approaches!!
Love listening to these conversations. Helps keep my memory fresh.
Right!!
I have my check ride in a few weeks. I thought this video was an old video that was recommended to me. Glad to see it’s VERY new

Great video. There was no mention at all about cold temperature corrections which is really important.
I've had my instrument rating for about 3 years now, but this was still a great video to think about those regulations that don't often come up. Thanks for posting!
god i wish Army IPs were this chill lol. Always feels like you're seeing a judge in a courtroom for our Oral Evals..
Wish I had this video 2 weeks ago, but I passed my IFR ride without it!
major congrats!!
Q: When is an instrument rating required?
A: -Anytime flying
- in IMC
- on an IFR flight plan
- Class A airspace
- Special VFR at night
Plus carrying ppl for hire over 50NM during the day or at night
@@Kobe248ify that would be for a commercial license!
@@PilotJames025 Exactly. Pilot can never carry anyone for hire, in IMC or not, until they have a commercial license.
@@ADifferentVibe correct, but you would also need an Instrument rating. The reason for this is because it’s possible for people to go from private pilot to commercial. You don’t necessarily need to do instrument after private pilot as instrument is a rating
@@PilotJames025 Obviously, but it's pertinent to instrument flying. You're not flying in Class A in a Cessna either, but you still mention it during the oral...
Good IFR Checkride Oral Exam, especially if you live in Alaska or far enough north for snow. It would be a very different oral exam for us by the Gulf of Mexico. 🇺🇸
john found ur boating channel randomly. pretty awesome I knew it was you just by your voice
Getting ready to start IFR training.!!
Im taking my FAA CPL and IR this November! Thanks for the video - Very informative and very helpful for preparing for my IR Oral
Loved this video, only thing I would say is Alaska and Hawai'i are usually special cases so it may not help as much for people in the 48 other states.
Haha, so glad you put the “pulling back doesn’t recover a tail stall” I was screaming in my head... no no no... hearing that. :-) Great Video!!!
Navy_flyer he didn’t say relaxing he said pulling back more... which would increase the angle of attack on the tail that is already stalling. Nor did I say you need to aggressively push forward and as far as if you “relax” the controls or “push” forward on the controls is dependent on your trim settings.
I looked up 15012, and here’s what I found (and I quote)
“A pilot may log an IAP for currency or training when the pilot accomplishes the IAP... When conducted in an aircraft maneuvering in IMC, and the aircraft transitions from IMC to visual flight conditions on the final approach segment of the IAP *prior to or upon reaching MDA or DA/DH* ”
Affirmative. In actual IMC you must only be in IMC until just past the FAF. His answer is incorrect in this case.
@@tswitz117don’t even need to pass the FAF, just be established on the final approach segment I believe. We can be vectored there by ATC as well
@@delosx There needs to be an obscuration, of which that causes you to fly solely by reference to the instruments, between the FAF and DH/MDA. Even if this only last for a few seconds it can still count as logging an IAP.
Awesome content, thank you airmen!
This really helps thanks!
Loving the class videos ✈️
Student was awesome to let this go on youtube
I like your approach...."As far as Im concerned, youve already passed....it's just up to you to prove me wrong"
Good stuff! Prepping for my practical and hope to get it done in the next 3 weeks.
Taking mine in 3 days! Please post part 2:)
How'd it go?
Instrument currency is 6 months preceding to the month of the flight. This is different from the previous 6 months.
John, can you please make mock check ride for CFII, would really help, we need Multi engine check ride and MEI if possible
Very nice video, thanks for your hard work!
Thank you, your video help a lot
Can you do another mock IFR check ride that is up to date and uses the ACS with a scenario please?
I think it's really cool that you have these videos and even a number as a support. Sometimes when I call the aopa the guy is a little grumpy to answer the phone and discourages me from calling but I feel like being able to call someone who wasn't charging me was a factor in my success on my checkride. I have a stage check coming up with a tough person and I just want to do well. The last debrief I heard from his was rough.
Sorry brah. You'll get through it
How’s your training going these days?
@@thenelsonbruhs722 its pretty good. Bad weather here so I'm kind of just studying at home. Density altitude was super high yesterday so I decided against flying. Instrument really is fun though, and the oral is more daunting then the flying.
@@Irem-nw3cq I agree 100% on that. I’m going into an instrument stage check (just oral) this afternoon actually. I’ll have to tell you how it goes.
@@thenelsonbruhs722 cool, best of luck to you! Study hard, it'll pay off.
Your student mentioned adding flap increases AoA. While his explanation was close thinking about chord line change, when you add so much lift it actually decreases AoA for the same relative airflow. Best example would be fly straight and level maintaining the same airspeed and put flaps down, notice what happens to the attitude to maintain that altitude and airspeed. Sorry I couldn't let it go.....you`re both doing aviation proud gents, keep it up!
What you described is a decrease in pitch, not AoA. AoA increases with flaps, which means you need to pitch down to maintain straight and level flight.
@@ohwowbeau my point was you'll find the net effect from an increase in camber and lift will be flight at a lower AoA for the same relative airflow. Without an AoA guage this is only noticed by the need to pitch the aircraft forward and rotate the new chord line towards the relative airflow to a net lower AoA. If nothing else is considered then AoA does increase when selecting flaps theoretically but not practically.
@@Nico-uk3dv I see what you're sayin, all technically true we're just talking semantics right now. But what better place to argue semantics than checkride video lol. Have a good one
thank you
checkride tomorrow thanks for the help
How was it?
@@user-gw4ju7du1v PASSED!!!
FAA 15012 and FAR 91. 57C does not specify that the approach has to be two minimums to be logged. You also can fly a special VFR with permission if you do not have an instrument rating.
Thank you great Video
Good Video!!!
Wow already got his “uhhs” down pat this guys going places!
This was brutal
yeah I would request another examiner, its like he is out to get him. I mean he passed the written with a 98% so he gets grilled with the same questions again verbally.

Great video; as usual it helped a bunch. #ThumbsUp
You the man! I have my checkride on the 22nd!

@FBI wait it's you
2 Questions about the Wind shear:
1) Can you ask for or find data yourself in flight about the stability of the wind shear? Could it be trending higher, lower or stable at 010? A 35 knot shear trending down with the last report at 1000’ sounds pretty sketchy.
2) Can you prophylactically increase your airspeed before you encounter the shear during decent? Knowing you will losses 35ish knot of airspeed? Or does that just further complicate shooting that approach?
Taking mine today!
Shayne Wolfe how was it ?
I wish my DPE will be this easy and nice, but most of my school DPE nad EOC examiner are hard and it take about 7 fail before they let you go fro your checkride.
Just when the video was getting good it stops. Hahaha
yeah, that was annoying. it's good, but it's not titled correctly.
On that windshear question, Vx seems reasonable, but at 1000 fpm, thats still 16 fps, which is well above what most landing gears are made to take. Sounds like you're riding a shovel at 100 ft agl...
9:30 the students mentions to get PROFICIENT you need can do it in a simulator but then adds on saying “not just any simulator but like an AATD” which basically means an FAA certificated sim but that’s actually NOT true for a PROFICIENCY! you actually can fly in your own sim at home to get proficient … when you need an FAA certificated simulator would be in when you want to get CURRENT I believe.
Good job on John’s part of catching that and explaining what I said basically.
Please do my Checkride sir, you way too nice 🙂
Inside of the FAF counts as an approach that can be logged..
Kinda wish I watched this a week or two ago and not an hour before my IR checkride here goes nothing
He was wrong about logging an approach. It doesn’t have to be to minimums, only had to be past the final approach fix.
I looked up FAA info 15028 and it was right that you have to keep the simulated conditions to minimums
@@maddiemac365 you are correct for simulated…but for actual IMC you only have to fly past he FAP in IMC to log the approach….so you could literally fly IMC and pass the FAP and 30 seconds later be in VMC and can still log that approach
That's for actual IMC. For simulated IFR it had to be to the minimums. Under real IFR, you only need to pass the FAF for logging purposes
I’m currently working on my instrument rating and this is making me stress even more.
....... The aircraft descends past the final approach fix (FAF) as the pilot contacts the control tower and the aircraft transitions from IMC to visual metrological conditions (VMC) before reaching the DA. At this point, the pilot receives an ATC clearance to land; the pilot visually confirms runway environment assured and lands. In this example, the IAP complies with § 61.51(g)(3) and § 61.57(c); therefore, the pilot may log this IAP....... (example in INFO 15012)
Mines tomorrow kinda feel better lol
Imc until the FAF to log, not to minimums.
I’ve been reading some comments that the student in this video is acting and is actually very knowledgeable. I feel the video would be better if you didn’t deliberately have the student get the answers wrong. The listeners hear the wrong answer first, then the right answer from the instructor. I think it would be better if we heard the right answer or a partial right answer and then the instructor added the extra information to really complete the answer. The advantage is that the student doesn’t get a bunch of UA-cam backlash. But another advantage is that you will feel really prepared after watching this video!
come on... you are nit picky.... the student is not acting - you have a weird idea on this. this is a helpful video
glad to see he recognized that icing conditions would be probable... no go in a C172
Are you a DPE now?
Also, where is the best place to get sunset/civil twilight times for an area? FAA "approved"?

@@FlyingTim Thanks Tim!
AirNav is pretty great for that. Type the airport then look under the airport distance calculator.
to fly special VFR you do not need an instrument rating by day (only at night)
As is mentioned in the video
Could you please do a video for private pilot check ride?
Coming soon👍
Is Jon a DPE?
Does he live in Alaska now or still Florida ?
I just wondering how you can have 6 holding in the past 6 months... Doing 6 approaches, tracking, interception is not an issue, but holding? Do you tell the tower, I need to do a holding as part of my certs?
Yup, you'd generally ask for it from approach
i start my journey in a year and i’m so nervous watching this video
how's it going? :)
ya!; CFI's are spendy! i herd you charge 200$ an hour??? that absurd! but i guess we all got to do what we got to do! i do apreiciate the info tho! happy flying....
Very different from the way they apply your exam in Mexico... hardest in the US
yes Mexico is now in the US
How much do you need to have memorized v. The stuff you can just use the far-aim and look up during the instrument check ride???
You should know as much information as possible for any check-ride. The FAR is there as a reference, if you are constantly having to check the regulations for answers your DPE wont like that very much.
@@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 understood but is there a quantifiable/average amount of information that is acceptable for the oral? Like say i knew 50% of the questions asked off the top of my head and the other 50% I relied on the FAR/AIM would that be a passable situation?
Is he actually a CFII 😳

"So lets say you pass your check ride today and then you don't fly for 6 months, and then you want to go fly IFR in IMC... what would you need"

DAL191 was an L1011
take a shot every time he says UHHHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMM
Is a oral exam still required for private pilot or tail wheel bush pilot check ride
Oral and flight exam is required for private pilot. Tailwheel is an endorsement, meaning it doesnt require an official 'checkride'. A certified flight instructor will 'sign you off'. Dont be mistaken though; there is still practice and learning involved in this endorsement. In terms of Bush flying, it's even less official. I'd recommend reaching out to a qualified instructor with backcountry experience to begin that journey. Bush flying requires a lot of different experience and judgement; learn everything you can
If i no fly for 24 months. What do i have to do to be current again?
Assuming you are a private pilot with an instrument rating:
You need to complete a biennial flight review and an instrument Proficiency check.
I’m a bit surprised this guy is a CFII… seemed like he was pretty shaky about a lot of the material. Very different than any instructor I’ve dealt with. Also, is a checkride ever this easy? He gave him most of the answers he didn’t know. I feel like I would have been failed in the first 10 minutes of this had I been giving these answers.

I feel like he was thinking of tail plane stall in ice when he said raise the flaps to 10 because that would be a night mare in windshear.
35 Minutes? My oral examiner was hardcore. We went three days straight 8 hours each day for the oral and luckily had a quick 1 hour flight.
This was about 1/8th of it.
