Took my checkride 2 weeks ago today. The oral was quick. About 90 minutes. The DPE put me at ease right away and it was like a conversation. Next thing I knew he said " lets go fly" I looked down at my watch and was 90 minutes later.

I’m a real outsider here, but felt the need to comment! I’ve always loved aviation having had a Dad and an ex-boyfriend, both of whom were proficient pilots of single engine small aircraft.❤️ I love listening to all the pilot channels, but find this one especially interesting! The most important book that should be referenced in all of these videos (every single one) and for every Practical Test is the FAA Airman Certification Standards, or ACS. In that book it informs you and your CFI what items and tasks that will be covered on the test. And it’s the same book a Designated Pilot Examiner MUST use when developing their Plan-of-Action for the test. It’s a shame that the ACS is not referenced or even mentioned once in this video.

Best advice I can give Is remember your test is by a specific examiner who does this for a job. They usually pic there favorite questions, emergency, etc. So before your exam ask as many instructors and recently licensed private pilots in your area they’ll tell you what that examiner usually focuses on. Also a great piece of advice is to not be so scared I was terrified and ended up getting 98 on written and my examiner said I had the intelligence of a commercial pilot. Never doubt yourself

I took my private check ride in 1991 and my instrument check ride in 1992. For almost 6 months when I was not working or in bed, I had my nose in my FAR/AIM. My instructor for both was a CFII and about a week before my private check ride, he told me to cut back on my study and just relax. The examiner that did my private told me upfront he wanted me to feel comfortable, but he was not going to just pass me. We walked back to his office, he offered me some coffee as he went over all my paperwork, and just started asking me questions. About 35 minutes later we went flying. My instrument check ride was much different. I worked that day and the examiner allowed me to schedule the check ride for about 10PM. I was tired and made a lot of mental errors setting up the approaches. But, I did get my ticket.

Just to clarify on the recive only RCO like 121.1R. As a pilot you transmit to Flight Service on 121.1 but you need a functional VOR to dial into the VOR frequency then turn the volume up to hear the Morris code. Flight service will talk to you through the Morris code transmitter on the VOR frequency.

@@edb7742 I would say yes. My job isn’t to trick someone into failing. However, I have a fiduciary responsibility to test the areas of operation and associated tasks provided in the ACS so there are no secrets to the oral or flight. It’s in everyone’s best interest that I provide a comfortable testing environment and if they’ve studied they’ll do fine in my oral. If they didn’t study then the checkride goes south pretty quick and there’s not a whole lot I can do about it. I’m a dad and care about each applicant but we also don’t need aviators giving 40% of their ability, we need them considerably more engaged than that.

Great job as always! Where can I find a simulation of a check ride for the multi-engine Add On?

I'm currently looking at going for my very first introduction flight and this sounds really complicated especially when i have a terrible memory and get anxiety when doing written tests.

Check your discussion on STCs. She states it's required for every modification done but that is not true. A field approval could have been given for the modification.

I’m jealous. I really knew my stuff for my Private but my oral was two days (16 hours long). The flight lasted almost 3. The examiner I had was trying everything he could to take advantage of my gibill money. My instructors had some serious words with the guy. My commercial was with a different examiner and lasted only 2 hours.

My oral was 4 hours, we had to discontinue due to some stuff coming up before we could fly, came back and had to do the oral again and then go fly… guy was really nice but it was annoying, but yours sounds like a nightmare… oh mine also made me do the cross country planning in front of him!!

Geez I have been thinking of getting my private Pilate license but man the questions seem so intimidating. Even tho I knew the answer I’d probably freeze up just by the rapid fire questions.

Can you make the oral preps included into silver/gold membership? the platinum one is just too expensive..

Love this, I benefit from these, however with the cost of flying, DPE and such dishing out more money for videos is a bit hard for me. At least I bought the ASA book.

Could you honestly say that you would have passed a student with this performance on the oral exam? She obviously would have studied more for the actual exam but I'm looking for a frame of reference on what is considered acceptable or not in order to pass the oral.

I'm studying to be a private pilot right now and I might have my checkride this month, but I'm afraid with the DPE because I'm not very fluent English speaker, I'm bad at speaking and shy, but my classmates make it, I hope I do well.

Not only that kind of leans into the conversation kind of puts you almost at the defensive versus actually giving an answer
