MONGAR Vs STAR RIVER | NATUREHIKE TENT REVIEW & COMPARISON!

- The Naturehike MONGAR 2 and STAR RIVER 2 are quite similar tents, but just how similar are they?Join Trev as he takes a closer look at these two lightweight 2 person tents in this 2 tent review!
**This is not the Mongar vs the MSR HUBBA HUBBA as many thought may be on the cards although there is a link below in case you're interested in that tent)
Trev loves a tent off... and after last weeks review of the Mongar 2 (supplied with thanks to Col from Outdoor Gear Essentials -
outdoorgearessentials.co.uk/ ) someone asked him "What is the difference / similarities between the Naturehike Mongar 2 and Star River tents?"
Trev took on the challenge and managed to source the Star River 2, and in this video he puts them both up side by side and runs through all the differences.
FANCY ONE THESE TENTS? Then check out Colin's site for UK supplied stock of the Mongar 2 outdoorgearessentials.co.uk/ (plus Lanshan, Vik 1 and other tents at really competitive prices) or try some of the following links...

After seeing this I think I'd just about (by a fraction) go for the Star River. The metal centre clip and only half mesh would seal the deal for me personally. Great comparison vid.
Maybe this helps people - the Star River 2 is a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 clone and the Mongar 2 is a MSR Hubba Hubba 2 clone. Both based off top selling tents from the big brands - both very good for the price!
Hi, what's a good 2--3 man ? Some weather yes. Mid $ like these?
@@Frank020 Hi! Naturehike have some very budget friendly options in the 2 - 3 person range. The Mongar is available in a 2 or 3 person option. You also have different models like the Opalus or the Cloud Up which do 3 person models.
@@Strychninex Thanks..
I ended up buying both and have decided to keep them both. I prefer the Star River for myself because of the additional fabric that raises the height of the bathtub floor. The mongar is considerably wider which is a better design for two people so I will give this tent to my two daughters to use. The other differences in clips, pockets and cross member are not significant in my opinion. I took the star river out this weekend in the rain and it worked very well and I was completely dry.
This was the best comparison I've ever seen. Congratulations.
Thanks very much, glad that you enjoyed it!
Well done, thanks for taking the time do do this comparison. Very informative!
Fantastic video Trev, really well put together with the side by side comparisons at each stage, I think I would have the star river 2 if pushed.. but I do like all the Naturehike tents, was out in the cloud peak 2 for the first time in a while last weekend and really enjoyed it 👍
Ordered the Star River after that nice and detailed review! Many thanks for your work!
Great comparison pointing out the slight but important differences. Thanks a lot! This video made up my mind which tent is best for me.
One of the best reviews. Thanks for the effort
Great comparison vid - thanks for being so thorough
the exact comparison i was looking for!! thank you!
Good review Trev. It’s always good to see the tents side by side. 😀
Thanks Rachel. Glad you enjoyed it cheers.
Very helpful comparison thanks. A point missed. The Mongar has a much wider roof that puts an awning over the vestibule. While with the Star River when the fly door is open the rain is much more likely to drip into the tent. So the wider head room inside the Mongar, also means an awning over the door when getting in and out in the rain
A good point. Can make a difference in bad weather. 👍
superb review. for both tents. thank you!!!
Mongar 2 is great summer tent thanks to all the mesh. Ventilation is superb. For colder months, down side obviously is that it doesn't hold up much heat either.
This is an excellent comparison , thank you! It appears to me that, although on the sides the river is less roomy, it is more spacious at the feet and head, due to those sides being more upright, which would benefit taller individuals
Thank you for the comparison , i really need this
Hey! Thank you for this explanatory-comparison review!! I made my purchase based on this video (Star River 🙂)
i was surprised they were the same weight especially as the monger has so much more netting ….. maybe the alloy poles are a bit beefier or something 🤔 there is a 15D version of the Mongar that i believe is 1.8kg (i have one 😄) looking at them both the Star River with more inner material seems a true 3 season tent whereas the Mongar is pretty much a 1 season maybe 1 1/2 season tent …. 😄 great review as always nice one Trev …. atb Dave Mc
Great video. I think the Star River 2 is slightly better. It seems like an improved version of the Mongar 2, especially the extra head room. The only thing that would make it better is if it had a longer 'cross bar' (same length as the Mongar, rather than shorter) so the inside doesn't come in so much on the sides, and thereby losing space. That wouldn't matter, if you are sleeping in it by yourself, but might be slightly inconvenient if sharing this tent with a second person.
Great comparison video mate :)
I bought this tent because of the amazing reviews. I live in a place in Texas where the winds get up to 50-75mph which is quite bad and had a few tents collapse during a camp outs. I bought this one for this area and used it for another one the nature hike mongar 2 I have two of them. Beautiful tents! When it is 105 degrees outside those flap’s create a great cross breeze. Even my husband did great sleeping in the tent. 6 foot 3 inches. Still had plenty of room to have gear at the bottom. Wind was definitely not an issue. Especially with the huge stakes we had to nail into the rock hard ground.
Star River or monga?
Great video, I wasn't sure which to gwt... But we just got our starriver 2 in green with the skirts, going to camp in it this weekend can't wait 👍🏼
Have fun! Thanks for watching!
That was a very comprehensive comparison Trev!
Cheers Dave!
Best review, useful information. Thank you.
I have the Naturehike Cloud peak II and i love it. The Star River would be my choice but i would not use either in bad weather as i prefer a tent that pitches all-in-one. Great review Trevor.
Actually this is better for bad weather. You can set up the floor and fly then get in and build the inner while being dry.
Thank you for sharing! This is very helpful
Really useful side-by-side comparison video.
Great review Trev, but let's face it, we all came here hoping for a repeat of your 5 star Onetigris review!
Love the mongar gear loft to dry out stuff while you sleep when it's wet outside.
Cracking review mate thanks 👌👍
This was very helpful. I think the Star River will be best for me. Like you said it can be windy in the Mongar, and the size inside is more room to sit in the SR.
Hi trevor! Can you please do a cloud up 2 and star river 2 or mongar 2 comparison please?
Love watching your videos, keep ‘em coming!
Excellent review Trev thankyou
Thanks Jane.
The tent king with another great review.
Hhaha! Cheers Max!
honestly i love both.. i have the mongar in green and love it.. especially in hot weather.. the ventilation is just perfekt and it held up in any rain and wind i put it through
Always look forward to your vids.
Super useful comparison, just wondering do you use a foot print when camping to protect your tents? My lanshan 2 bathtub is very lightweight I wonder do I need to protect it.
Really helpful, thanks! I've been looking at both and with all the spiders I've encountered lately, I would rather have the door on the Mongar.
Love the video. I still think the cloud peak is the better nature hike tent
Awesome video, as always. I would love to see a Vs with the Cloud peak. Cheers from Colombia.
Will bare that in mind cheers, Julian!
Excelent video, the best! Thank you.
Love your videos hope you grow from success to success such nice guys x
Great reviews I think I would choose the star river as the inner would be better for my climate (Canada) had the cloud up 1 it was an ok tent the biggest problem for me was I always got a draft from the door just being mesh and the star river I can see I would not have that problem but unfortunately for me I would not buy a naturehike product anymore more had a very bad service from them but always good to see the reviews great videos have you ever reviewed a alps mountaineering tent was looking to get one
excellent. I was looking for fly only setups & couldn't tell the difference between these two
Excellent and helpful vid! I went for the Star River 2 and tried setting it up yesterday in my living room and ran into an issue. The footprint is about 10cm longer than the inner tent, but in this vid the footprints are the same size as the tent. It says "Mat for Star River 2" on the package. Impossible to set it up without a lot of spare mat, and lifting it is out of the question since the entire mat comes loose.
Interesting comparison, Trev. Really quite subtle differences that you can't really pick up looking at on the website. Think I'd probably choose the SR for the reduced mesh. But overall, still prefer outer pitch first tents. All the best👍
I got the star river and outer pitch first is possible and easy since there are clips on the ground sheet.
So when it was dry I inner pitch first.
In rain outer pitch first
@@jan-willemvanvelzen5114 Thanks Jan-Willem👍
@@jan-willemvanvelzen5114 Yep, same as the Mongar 2 - that can be outer pitched first too.
Are you sure the trampoline is just for the kids ? 🤣 This channel is definitely the place to come for tent info. Cheers for helping out
The bloody trampoline has invaded my space! 🤣🤣 cheers Gus. Thanks for watching!
Great review. Price difference? If you had to buy one, which would you buy and why?
Great Video. The Star River 2 door that rolls to the bottom is probably my only (mild) complaint about it. Easy to flap outside and get wet - and in or out has a habit of catching mud etc if you're sat inside with legs/boots outside. But the actual opening looked much bigger than the Mongar. I couldn't quite see if the Mongar has the central light hook that the SR2 does ?
The mongar had no central hook but did have a kind of loft net! You could easily stick a torch up there
Thank you for doing a comparative review. I was nearly considering the River 2 considering the pockets and the aluminum center pole “thing”. However, I didn’t like how the zipper doors design, leaving the mesh rolled up at the bottom rather than to the side. Tough break. The Mongar product description states that the width is at 135mm and the River 2 is 130mm.
I have the SR, and mine has the twist clips actually.. (green 20d). I love it, and chose it over Mongar because of the extra fabric and the head space. The only thing I wish they would change is the door opening.. 😅
Diitto !!
How is the tent in the wind?
perfect compare. thanks!
These are the 2 Naturehike tents I've had, loves the SR but it was bright orange so got rid and currently in the Lakes in a dark green Mongar 2 which I also love
Looking forward to taking them both out at some point. Got rid of my star River last year because it had snow flaps... Jesus that was annoying!
I have a dark blue 15D Star river 2, it has a yellow inner fly. It makes the inside of the tent quite bright with a light on.
Thanks for the excellent review! Could you let me know what the pole segment lengths are for these two tents? Thank you!
i much prefer the Star River, great review.
Star River for me but the new blue 15D version. Only 1.7kg but I think it looks better in that colour too. Nice comparison trev. Can never have too many tents 😂👍
I'm gonna start getting rid of some tents soon. Need the space lol. Wasn't aware there was a lighter version of the star River but makes sense, naturehike seem to be making lighter alternatives to all their tents at the moment. Cheers for watching.
@@SummitOrNothing you should raffle them off for charity. I'm doing that with a chair I was sent. I won't raise much but every little helps eh? 👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Yea last year I put together a wild camping starter pack that I raffled 'for charidy' then gave a couple away to celebrate 10K subs... was thinking of doing the same thing this year.
I have the Star River 15D in blue. The inner fly now has the, "push up and twist" clips and metal attachments for the cross bar - same as the Mongar 2 shown. Also, my outer fly does not use the black attachment clips. It uses the same attachment system as the ground sheet and inner fly.
@@dazauto107 be interesting to see a review on the differences 👍
Love your videos. Learning so much. Which of these (or the Cloud Peak or Cloud Up 2 / 3) would you suggest for 2 adults new to wild camping? Something to cover 3 season?
I wondering that the same :) have you made an dususion yet?
Hello!! Which one would you recommend? the cloud up 2 or the star river 2. Thank you for your videos
The Star River, with the inner doors zipping up from the bottom... does it have a zip at both sides allowing a stable door type opening? This would help keep some weather out and offer a bit of privacy whilst still letting air in and being able to see outside.
So at the end, which would you pick for a 1 person camping ?
Great review
Anyone tried the vestibule for the mongar2 on the Star river? Does it fit nicely?
The Star River is pretty close to the Robens Boulder2 who is my favourite tent. I also own and love the NH CloudUp2, however...the problem I have with the NatureHike tents, is that they all have too much mesh and too little 'solid wall' inners. I live in Norway, the nights are getting colder, and if I were to go camping now, I would definitely bring my Robens Boulder2 and not my beloved NH CloudUp2,-for that reason alone. Too much mesh is a no-go for me exept in mid summer,-I've had enough cold nights thank you very much! Other than that, both these tents looks like they could do the job, I like the Star River the best, but...I still prefer my Robens😊
Also love my Robens Boulder 2. Feel the quality is a little bit better than my Cloud up 3 as well. Been out in 25mph winds and it was rock solid all night.
@@barijohn yes, it has been guaranteed to withstand 62 mph winds, so pretty sturdy stuff! And really good quality as well. Scandinavian/Nordic brands are built to handle the Nordic climate😊
nice review...and tight battle. I would move some of the feature of the mongar to the star river and it would become the best tent. One question...i'm sure the Mongar can be pitched fly first in case of rain. Can you do the same with the Star river?
Can the Mongar be modified to add more protection over the mesh?
I've owned the star river 2 for a couple of years now. She's a beauty. Just like the Big Agnes copper spur 2 but 1/6th the price. I dont even bother using the footprint, so the weight is only 1.8 kg.
Hey Paul. I just got my Star river and also think about ditching the footprint. How is your tent floog holding up after a few years of using it without the footprint. Any noticable wear and tear?
Curious about that as well!
I use the Mongar 2 tent. Have used it for 3 years now and am extremely satisfied. Have used it for a cycling holiday in Denmark in all kinds of weather. I use the top pocket in the inner tent to dry towels during the day and is also a good storage space.
However, I have a problem with the inner tent in that the zipper is stuck in the fabric and it is impossible to get rid of it. One part of the zipper bulges out. Does anyone have a link to pages how I can fix it myself. I'm probably not the only one with this problem. A good piece of advice is to be careful when using the zipper and possibly hold with one hand and pull the zipper with the other!!!!!
Thanks for this review.!!
Hello tanks for vidéo it s very good.
I m 1,90m tall are the tents big enough? Thank you
Nice. Thank you for this.
No worries
Hello, in your oponion which one is better for cold wheater?
Hi Trev, I’m looking to get a new tent up to £200, I’ve been looking at the Naturhike cloud peak or the Vaude terra trio as both are similar prices, knowing your a Naturehike fan just wandered what would be your preference or if you have any experience of Vaude tents. Cheers Phil. Ps love the videos and bought my instinct solar based on your review
Excellent comparison,,, as I live in SE Asia, the Mongar 2 with full mesh tent is definitely more appropriate as I currently have a Marmot Limelight 2 that is similar in tent mesh as the Star River and is quite hot with limited ventilation. Both are basically the same size and quality in construction. Thanks again.
Just got a monger for similar reasons, heat. Haven't used it yet though
Nice video. wihat tent do tou think is the best of these 2 ??
I bought the Star River because of the better wind protection on the inside.
I hate the doors though. You basically have to fully open them to get in and out whereas with the Mongar (or almost every other tent), you can get away with only half opening it.
I have no problems with that.... Maybe you just have to lose some weight?
Yea, I know exactly what you mean. I find the doors on a few of the Naturehike tents let's them down.
Is that a new version of Mongar, that has fastex (clips?) on the corners? I have bought mine this spring and it didn't have, only metal connections O.o
Is the Star River the same pole structure as the Cloud Up 2?
Great,, complete review,, different a both tent,, so which one you recommended
Depends on where you plan to use it. For hot weather, the mongar is nicer. For colder weather, the star river makes more sense. For windy conditions, the cloud peak is a good option too.
really nice and detailed comparison. thank you! wouldhave appreciate also if you had given some actual camping experience about ventilation and especially the differnt door systems. which door style is easier to use and maybe lets less bucks in when u open and close it quickly. because i suppose the Mongar door can just hamg there with the zipper not really closed so at least there is a bit of protection. and then I also wonder about the lack of one window or vent with the Star River. but I could assume the higher opposite side thus creates a bigger chimney effect. but then again if the wind is turning the Mongar is in advantage due to its symmetrical design. But the headroom and the pockets are really a big plus also not to forget the higher fabric part on the inner tent because I read a lot of people complain that the Mongar can get quickly too breezy and thus chilly inside because of the only mesh design.
I think i have a updated version of the mongar as mine kind of looks like the other except the mongar is the same size on both sides
I've been a naturehike fan for awhile and currently own a cloud up for over 3years - I love it as its ultralight and perfect for 1 person moto camping. Built well! Moved back to NZ from Japan and the weathers colder and windier here.. looks like the star river would be warmer but being higher would catch the wind. Also noticed no fly connection to the inner except on sides.
..which would be better in cold/ windy weather? 😳
Would like a comparison
Hi Bennet - out of these two I'd say that the star river would be the better of the two for colder windier nights - but you may even want to check out the cloud up 2 if you havent already. Tie off an additional guyline to the rear window and the thing is bomb proof. Also, I have never had an issue with the flysheet not being attached to the frame, it actually clips to the ground sheet or inner via the corners. Thanks for watching!
@@SummitOrNothing Thanks for the reply!! Yeah star river does look better for colder climates when ventilation isn't such an issue.. like the cloud up 2 but TBH I hated the front exit as side is much easier.. especially now Im over 40 🤣
The Mongar is, as far as I can see, the same model as the 3F UL Floating Cloud 2, at least from the frame.
This might mean that one could exchange the inner of the Mongar with the 4 season one for the Floating Cloud 2, seeing as Naturehike doesn't offer any other inners. Though the 3F inner has to be ordered from Ali over in China and doesn't come cheap...
Maybe someone who has access to both tents in their circle of friends can test it out?^^
Yes the Floating Cloud2 and Mongar can exchange the inners

But there is a solution for Star River too :)

@@namelessone5200 Nice
Trev you do the best reviews on You Tube - really thorough.
Cheers Terry, glad you enjoy them!
Would u be able to do a review side by side on the difference between Cloudup 2 and the star River 2 one of my questions is are they both 4 season or which one held up better? I have watched from the playing list your camping with both tents. Hope you can help thanks 😊
The cloud up is not 4 season, even with the snow skirts.
If you want a 2 person tent you should pick the mongar as you can sleep in opposite directions. The star river is more for solo camping because it has better headspace but shoulder to shoulder sleeping will be very narrow. So for 2 persons i would recommend star river 3 where I feel like the monger 2 is already ok. This has also more vestibule space
I would love one of these but as my wife has pointed out the nine tents already in the garage ( actually 13 plus tarps, couple of bivvy's and four hammocks, but who's counting)
I don't think I can justify it on a Thursday🤣😂🤣
We all know the struggle, but there is never a perfect tent, thats why you need plenty
Really Interesting! I would love to be able to combine the best features of both ;D
Thank you sir 🙏
As the new proud owner of the Star River tent featured in this very video (won it via a Patreon competition), I would definitely recommend the Tent. So quick and simple to set up, reliable and warm when I’ve used it in high winds/rain on Dartmoor.
Glad you're enjoying it, Joe! Is a beautiful of a tent
Any issues to report ? Some people have commented that the zips may be quite tight (could have been a faulty batch though). Cheers.
@@cyrilhaessig27 I haven’t experienced any issues with the zips thus far. I was a bit sceptical about how the inner opens (by dropping to the ground) but actually now prefer this feature to other opening styles.
I wonder if the Mongar Vestibule Extension would work on the Star River2 🤔 or even better... naturehike makes one for the star river 2.😬
What do you think of bivvy camping?
So the star river has double doors on both sides?
I like the SR over the M, except for that inner door.... One might just go and add a zipper to the bottom and then cut the fabric.
The lower profile of the Mongar 2 is appreciated when the winds are stronger.
Winter snow camping tent preference...Mongar or Star River? Why!?
Hello, very good video !!! 2 years ago I also hesitated and bought a Mongar 2 and it has met my needs: tent for 2 adults and a 5 year old kid. Too bad last night a fox decided he wanted my food and broke it for a corner. Now I'm looking for a spare and I thought to repeat until I saw the Campz Lacanau ... which do you think is better? Thanks for the tips
Damn foxes... I've heard this happen before! Not aware of the campz lacunae, Marcel. Shall have to keep an eye out for it.
@@SummitOrNothing thanks but finally I've found a great sale on a Mongar and I repeat model ;)
MONGAR and STAR RIVER are similar tents with similar space, if you like purple, choose MONGAR😁
I just bought the purple MONGAR2 from your website, great price, wonderful performance
Cracking video Trevor and will hopefully help some people to choose.
I bought the latest 15D star river 2 and it has the metal tags and the twist clips for the inner to the poles. It was the extra fabric rather than full mesh that swung it for me
Same reasons I bought the Star River 2.
I have the same version of Star River as in the video - Does the latest retain the fly clips on the ground mat corner tapes? Does enable fly first pitching if needed (though much more of a faff than inner first).
@@Dean_Smith mine doesn’t have the 4 black plastic fly clips. It uses the same method for ground sheet, inner and outer fly i.e. metal washer in nylon strap for all. I guess it is less fragile or possibly just cheaper to produce. Can still be pitched outer first.
@@dazauto107 Thanks!
I’m considering the star river for the same reasons. Does the fabric also provide better protection from rain as it raises the sides of the wall? I live in Australia so it’s quite warm when I go camping but still want good protection if there is heavy rainfall
last time i bought mongar and tu be honest i really happy than i chose this tent.
Thank you so much for this video!!
And now you got me on to the tent of Star River!! I really really like it!!
It is a BIT bigger, more spacious! And also something I noticed that you missed, even though the Mongar had longer roof poles, which I like, gives more vertical room, it actually closes in the door angle! And it means you struggle to get in an out more! Without getting wet!
The Star River is more open and I like the big wide doors!
QUESTION those GH: do you think I could fasten a roof loft somehow??
I really want all the bells and whistles of this tent (Star River) and I just want the roof loft that comes with the Mongar!
Plz respond! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yea, I wonder if there is some way of adapting it to put a roof loft in it. I disnt pay enough attention to how it was attached in the mongar, if I'm honest. If I learn more I'll share it on here.
@@SummitOrNothing yes please!!

@@namelessone5200 unfortunately no English subtitles, but one can see he added an additional sheet to cover the mesh, and added extensions to the outter
Hey Trev, can either of the inners be packed before packing up the fly (so that it stays dry on a rainy morning)? Thanks!
Absolutely - i often set up and pack down the cloud up 2 just like that, as you can see in this video - ua-cam.com/video/MyLVlE6_cb0/v-deo.html
@@SummitOrNothing Amazing, thank you so much! So, am I correct in assuming that for a solo backpacker, you'd probably recommend Cloud Up 2 out of these three? (considering you "NatureHike Tents Ranked" video)?
The net bit that was touching your head is called a gear loft, the "rainbow" style doors on the river tent are very American, they seem to like them like that, good comparison thanks.
Ah, thanks for filling in the gaps. Cheers!
These Naturehike tents are Chinese copies of the American designed MSR Hubba Hubba (Mongar) and Big Agnes Copper Spur (Star River). They are a fraction of the cost of the original tents.
