Naturehike Mongar 2P Vestibule Add-On - First Look
What it is : When it comes to budget friendly tents, the Mongar 2 from NH is one that I often recommend. It’s a good quality shelter, the weight isn’t bad considering the size and the price is fair with it being easily found for around $120.
Check out my review of the Mongar 2 if you haven’t seen it already.
The focus of this video is an add-on for the Mongar; a vestibule add-on; this is a product that I have received a lot of questions about and that is why I am here today.
Link : www.naturehike.com/products/n...
Materials : 20D Nylon
Waterproof rating : Not sure, the company doesn’t state this information. If it matches the Nylon version of tent, it would be 4000mm but I don’t know if it does.
Weight :
Kit : 1.7lbs
Tent Total : 6lbs
Color : Gray
Price : $80 at the time of filming and is available only at the NatureHike Web Site.
Rain testing is coming up soon.

I think it looks kind of neat. Maybe it would make for a good dog shelter as well.
I was thinking the same thing a great spot to give the dog some shade during the day store some stuff little mosquito netting and a bed and my dog diesel sleep there at night
Same. And being a two person tent, this extra storage would be nice.
Perfect for those hyper poodles that puncture your Therma rest and Shred your nylon floor.
This vestibule is the reason I'm considering Mongar itself - I need some shelter for my dog - don't feel like keeping him outside, and don't feel like taking him inside ours as well - I'm afraid that he'll damage the bottom with his nails. And this vestibule feels like a perfect solution for me - together with us, but without the risk of damaging the base.
🤣 im glad my poodle was cool as a cucumber when it was time to relax. Shed just climb into bed and snuggle right up till morning.@@WCO3
The only video on UA-cam that talk so details about this tent model and it's vestibule. Thanks for the effort
I have both and I like them. A little weird to set up at first, but easy enough to figure out. We use the vestibule on the back of our tent as extra storage for our cooler and muddy clothes. It's nice for one or two nights, when you don't want to bring a big tent.
I hate tents you can't stand up in. I'm 6' 1" and 65 years old. Crawling on what's left of my knees is out of the question. Back in the day, this looks like a pretty neat setup. I've slept in worse.
@@LarryTaint-qn8pdit's not for you gramps! It's perfect for us hikers.
@@DreiK96 Perfect for mouthy young punks.
vestibule set up on the back instead of the front and for storage makes sense
I own both and love them , when my wife and I go hiking with our German shepherd the vestibule is where he sleeps and we dont have to worry about his nails tearing the floor of the tent. GREAT PRODUCT Especially for how we use it.
I always thought the vestibule was just for your gear, or maybe cooking. Wasn't supposed to be a porch. The one I had on my 2 person Sierra Design was very similar.
Same with the one on my Marmot Hammer. With the vestibule left in the tote at home it’s a just-over-3lb mountaineering tent. The only time I’d bring it solo is if I’m using my -25F bag because it touches the walls at both ends. I could leave the door unzipped and put my feet in the door to keep my head off the wall.
Exactly. I've never had a backpacking tent with a vestibule but I know they're not much bigger than this.
Could see this being used for an extra luxury for backpacking. Especially those that want a larger sheltered cooking area.
I have the Mongar and the add-on vestibule . I only use the add-on vestibule if it is going to be raining a lot. It is good for storage to keep gear dry and keep excess rain outside the main tent. However, you need to orient the tent so that the wind is facing the opposite side of the tent away from the add-on vestibule. Otherwise, the wind could blow rain into the tent under the rolled up rainfly.
Not a Eureka. Figures. Lol. Luke, I just came across your channel last week and I completely enjoy it! I am a former Girl Guide (Canadian version of Girl Scouts) and you have refreshed my memory about all things camping! I have camped in all kinds of weather and trained on survival camping and actually miss my compass if you can believe it. I am not able to camp anymore due to health issues but watching you brings back the fun and adventure each day at camp brought. Thank you so very much!
Every tent vestibule that I’ve ever used is not an area where you sit up in a chair or do things like that. It’s mainly a storage area for gear and a way for you to get in and out of the tent in the rain without getting the inside of the tent wet. Sometimes I think Luke expects way too much out of these companies.
This is twice ive watched him bash an add on vestibule with unreasonable expectations.... its dimensions arent too dissimilar to the tent specs.... does that mean that the tent is also not "people space" if you have to "cram" in there?
Completely agreed. Came to the comments section to see what everyone else was saying. This would be ideal for a cooking space if the weather has gone foul. Plus a good place to store gear to free up internal tent space. I have an Opalus 4 tent that I still haven't tried out, but I purchased specifically for additional room on a rainy day.
Right on!
I'd be concerned about rain water seeping in between the vestibule and the rain-fly. If it does, it's likely to drip down into the body of the tent. At $80 I think NatureHike could just make a one-piece fly/vestibule that replaces the original fly. That way it would not only prevent any potential leaking, but they could also raise the vestibule roof, to make it more roomy.
@Fou Yes, exactly!
I have it and I just use it for a gear locker on zero days or stormy nights. Works great when a visitor arrives and you have a place to move gear out of the rain.
You know that is Suzies tent. I bought the Mongar 2 after you two reviewed it, about 2 years ago. I also bought the Vestibule at the same time. My reason for it was motorcycle gear storage and I could cook in the rain and not in the tent. It was worth it to me.
I really like the purple. I have other gear, other tents, of other colors, and I keep going back to my purple tent for quick trips. 💜
I bought the Naturehike Mongar 2 (in purple) after seeing your reviews of how well it did. I needed a budget backpacking tent and it's been wonderful! I saw the vestibule online but at the price for how little it does, I decided it's not something I need. The tent though was a great buy! Thanks!
Cut the purchase price in half and it would be a viable option.
Thank you SO much for this review. I had purchased the Mongar 2P based on your and Susie’s review. It’s worked so well both car and backpacking camping. I had the vestibule in my cart but had some similar concerns about the utility in this current version.
I have bought mongar with the vestibule before 1,5 year. In this area I put my backpack for and my German shepherd dog. It's waterproof but with the vents closed. So if you want to have extra storage space for your backpack or your dog it's pretty nice...
OH! Stoked you're testing this, very keen to see how this effects the waterproofness of the tent.. have always though it would make it LESS waterproof...
Every backpacking tent with a vestibule I've ever seen is about that size. If you're looking for a vestibule that you can lounge in you might want to look for a car camping tent.
I was seriously considering the vestibule. But thankd to you, I realized, having this attached to the main tent during a storn with high winds will most probably allow rainwater inside.
I have had this exact combination for 3 years now. Still love the Mongar. The extension is quite useful for gear if you are two persons on a bike trip for example, or for the dog - or both. It's easily accessible from inside the Mongar through the inner door, and from the outside when placing or picking up gear. And if I don't need the extension it'll stay home. Would consider this over an additional tarp for most of my trips. But yes, the advertisment photo is bullshit. 🙂
This is good for lite snow camping. Dig out the vestibule and you can sit in the tent with your feet in the ditch and cook
You have to admire NatureHike's ability to think outside the box on that. I think it can be useful as excess storage to provide more liveable space in the main tent or to allow a space to cook in foul weather while staying in the main tent.
Couldn't you just use a tarp for the same purpose and actually have usable living space? The only advantage for this I can kind of see is the door, because it might be slightly less difficult do get your gear out of this than from under a tarp that is low to the ground. A tarp could be used in different ways where this has only one purpose that only makes sense on longer trips where a tarp would be more usefull as well, so...
This is for extra gear storage and it is a gear loft especially if you have 2 people in the tent and you can change cloths with additional privacy.
It's a shelter for dogs 😂😂
Like others said. It's the dog shelter, or if you're bicycle camping, you can keep your bikes with the front wheels taken off or a place for a backpack or to cook under.
@@SAMMIEJONESJUNIOR Why are you telling me this? I realized that since I replyed to a comment that sayd exactly that. However I then aske why xou would not just but a tarp over the tent thet you can pitch up OR down and have either a living space or gear storage depending on how you pitch the tarp. Was my comment that confusing that you did not get that? You can have a tarp be very closed of basically exactly like this vestibule.
Good review, and appreciate you showing the setup. Not sure why you’d think a vestibule for a 2p tent would be a livable palace, but it seems to be perfectly fine as an appropriately scaled vestibule. Regardless, thanks for showing it in the real world.
I agree,it’s meant for storage,it’s not a “conservatory”reminds me of when he blew up an expensive Nemo Tensor mat with his mouth instead of using the supplied inflation sack🤷🏼♂️😂.
Looking at the angle of the vestibule, it would appear that the fly will run water onto the vestibule, then back down inside the tent/vestibule. I'm curious to see that test.
i like it, it adds usable storage or living space. ill be looking at this as a serious option for my summer/spring camps
It’s a vestibule, meant just for storage. You wouldn’t expect to be able to sit on a chair and relax in an integral vestibule, would you? It just gives you the option of leaving it at home to save weight in an arid climate or if you’re going solo and have room for your gear in the tent.
And still they have this picture with the guy chilling inside
@@changein3d That guy is sitting on the ground with coffee away from the sun
I can see myself doing that
Thanks for reviewing!
It looks interesting I'm just wondering what the wind would do to it if you wanted to keep your gear dry from rain. It seems more like storage than sitting under it. But still a cool concept.
we know the Mongar is modeled after the Hubba Hubba - I did some research and found the MSX "Gear Shed" - an impressive 220 buckeroos (to match the $550 tent!) - this explains the pricing - they used the same rough ratio (today the Mongar retails for $169 and the add-on is now $70 which is about the same 5:2 ratio MSX used...)
The tent, I bought for my daughter a few years ago and we truly tested it out with a fishing trip to cherokee nc this year, it rained every day but yet my daughter and her things were bone dry, if this product does this good in the testing, we will buy it too!!
Hi. Great if you can do a full review on the naturehike hiby 3 especially on how it would handle in windy or rainy weather
With a little alteration you may be able to make your mongar 2p tent a 4 season hot tent with that add-on
I bought this tent on the back of your purple tent review. Such a great tent, easy to put up and cosy for me and my greyhound
Wanting to seam seal the Mongar 2. However it says it made out of polyester, and in a different description it says silicone coated on rain fly, and floor. Any help would be appreciated. So which one do I use Silcone , or the one for polyester? Thanks
Thanks for the review. Good work. 👍
Key concern - does the vestibule cover the only tent door? Or, is there an entry on the opposite side of the tent?
I can see this tent combo for canoe camping, or car camping. Not for backpacking, motorcycle, or bike camping. The Dyson X-Mid series has less weight & cost, and as much useable storage space. Nearly any other tent with a rainfly deployed on a ridge line could be more useful and much more versatile.
But, Nature Hike gets a “C” for at least trying.

Looks like good space for my dogs when we go camping with them.
I watched a video and I looked at the basically it’s an addition to your tent, which would be awesome for a pet bed or storage for your gear nifty. Not something I would buy, though.
And here’s why …
All it would take is a couple of hiking poles, stakes and a rain poncho or tarp and a few feet of cordage and you could.. have a more versatile system that would allow you to set up a vestibule, or plough point shelter with your existing tent to get the additional space using items you already have.
With the vestibule being added, it definitely would be nice for coverage of gear only
Brings back memories of the vestibule attachment for the REI Kingdom tent line. Totally useless, and same, hard to get into. A tarp does a better and cheaper job. Thanks for making the video Sir.
I have the Abisko Lite 2 and it has a similar porch area but it’s permanent, mainly because it’s for serious weather and need to be stable but I can appreciate what Naturehike have done here. You can’t sit in a chair in the Abisko’s porch either but if the weather is going to be wet I always take a small tarp for that purpose anyway.
What NH did with the advertising wasn’t misleading imo, I like it and if I owned the tent I’d buy it.
Looking at it, it looks like the vestibule slopes toward the tent. I think this will direct the water under the fly to the joint where it will run in.
The vestibule is awesome, have used it for ages, its a great storage area to keep gear dry and for the dog to sleep, I use this tent and vestible for high alpine tahr hunting in New Zealand
They have been used with a square jack patch, to host a small wood burner for winter use. In europe we are not all sitting on chairs when camping lol. So a place to sit on the ground whilst coooking and a hot tent. Its not mine but just proporting to what I have seen
I like your tarp and tent separations which makes much more sense weight-wise, space-wise and cost effectiveness. Negative on this addon for me. Great review, Luke!
I have a Mongar 2 and love it
It looks great. Maybe it can be fitted on a Star River tent too...
Could you do a review on the big Agnes black tail hotel tent? Maybe compare it to the nature hike?
Also I wanted to know if that is the garmin instinct on your wrist and if so, what are your thoughts on it compared to the fenix 7?
Probably safe to assume you like it better since you wear the instinct. But I’m just curious
I love the vestibule.
Also works with the Vik 1.
Its perfect for my dog.👍🐺
I had an msr elixir 3 and they had the exact same thing but called it a gear shed. Set up pretty much the same way. Storage was great but the cost of it was silly.
I have the tent but decided not to get the add on. My thought was maybe it would be good space for gear or dog.
I have the Mongar and think it's good. Saw the 'extension' a while ago and decided against it. I'd rather string up a tarp to give more room, at least you get some headroom..... Also expensive compared to the tent, Naturehike produce other tents with a vestibule which makes more sense.
Yeah, try the Opalus 2 or 3 but they're tunnel tents and not stand alone. But they have great vestibules.
I'm only 5'3" and I would feel claustrophobic in that...but storage space is good keeps sleeping area clear ....or use to help keep firewood dry....
Interesting product. Looking forward to your testing.
Wow Luke your realy going off on one with Nature hike tents , i have the both the Targa two and the cloud peak and i love them and they serve me well even in the worst of weather and i would love to have the canyon as a cot tent , if they made a vestibule like that for the cloud peak i would have one like a shot
Perfect for my folding e bike and folding bike trailer , think your getting a bit picky lol .
Ps here in the uk we prefer a bit of fabric wall on the inner compared to all mesh .
And what about naturehike Hiby 3? Could you do a review of that tent? It has a vestibule incorporated.
I can think of times when the weather has been so foul that I would not move until it settled down, I would have been very grateful for the space to make tea and cook in .
Great review. Thanks.
Could we use it at star river????
I like the vestibule, I am small and I don t use a chair but a foam mat, so it will be ok for me. probably too many things to carry but it a cool idea.
I kinda like it. It always rains when I go camping. Would be good to keep rain from getting in the tent when entering and exiting. Just wish they would have it as tall as the tent.
Luke would it be good for little kids or maybe a dog
nice start, now they need to complete the design
Thanks for reviewing this. I have this tent and I love it. Looking at this add on on the website i though it was close to the peak height if the tent and could be useful for a cooking space in bad weather now that I know how low it is my interest in this product has disappeared. Maybe if I hiked with a Dog it would be useful.
I like it space are always welcome maybe a stove jack would be nice
A buddy of mine is using this set-up. Sharing his experiences.
1. Great for use with folding bicycle (they keeps 2 Brompton inside). Helps keeps it out from rain and heavy morning dew on metal and keeping their foldies safe from theft. Also great from keeping side wind blowning rain out.
2. Great extra space for storage, cooking using batane stove in windy / rainiy days while sitting in the main tent and putting food bag out of the sleeping area.
3. Whats bad- true as said. Too low, they had to crawl to get in and out. Not great for tropical weather.
Alternatively, they will have a tarp in front if u want to keep it opened, airy and have a better view in front of your tent.
I bought this for extra storage space and its perfect for that.
Great for backpacks an hiking boots if you do not want to put them in your tent but if it rains water will most probably seep underneath.
It seems small on the ground but if you were camping in deep snow, you could dig down to make it more usable.
Another great review.
So I've seen one of these before for an MSR tent and I really like the idea of having a place to live but, while I have looked out for them, it's not something I have seen work. It would be nice for bike camping and if you were going somewhere you knew was going to be rainy so you can be outside but sheltered
Basically I think of this whole vestibule add-on as another sales gimmick.
But, if somehow I ended up with one of these I’d simply make use of it as a place to store firewood. I would I were to be also equipped with a battery and voltage regulator for an camping electric bear fence, I would also keep these there as well.
Luke, you expected to be able to sit on a chair inside the vestibule? Is there any two person tent on the market with a vestibule tall enough to do that? I am not a fan of Naturehike but I am wondering what you were thinking. Vestibules are usually for storage and possibly cooking in bad weather.
This goes perfect with the Flintstones car.
This looks like a copy of the MSR “gear shed” for their Hubba (MSR Hubba Hubba NX) series tents
Thanks for the heads up, too short for my uses, i have the tent but would probably just run a tarp over it instead of buying that.
Not sure i like the way the outer of the tent folds up to make way for the vestibule, I think water could get in there. As an idea, it's not bad, especially if you were bike camping and a place to store the bike, or perhaps sitting in the tent and using the vestibule to cook in, in bad weather. I think the height is the major issue and if they could increase that, then perhaps. Thanks for the review.
I appreciate you getting yourself in ridiculous positions for us Luke!
It is definately just for kit, but without the waterproofness I guess you'd have to be careful what you leave in there.
Interesting though, to think someone sat there and thought about this thing and designed it.
In solo motorbike adv i am able to hide all my gear in mongar 2, but for adv with my gf it could be useful storage space for the helmets, jackets, etc
The Naturehike Mongar vestibule attaches to my Naturehike Bear UL2 tent and with the addition of a 37 inch pole I can also use it as a stand alone shelter for cooking in wet or windy conditions. It is small but I can comfortably sit under it in my Alite Mayfly chair .
It's a neat idea and looks useful for whatever anyone would feel it is useful for. It is silly that the company chose to only display it as a sitting space since that is the one thing this would not be good for. For what it is, my only beef is with the price. I'd rather just buy a second tent since that wouldn't be much bigger or much more expensive and can also be used to store gear while additionally being capable of being a back-up or loaner tent.
Do you think this would work with the Vik?
Yes. There’s a UA-cam video that shows the guy using the vestibule with the Vik2
Its help if raining you can cook on that space.
Great video!
I think the purple is kinda cool. Usually I go for bland colors that blend in but the other day I was listening to a channel and the guy was saying he likes bright tents just in case something happens and the tent would be easier to locate. The purple would def stand out
I was also thinking along these lines! good festival material :) what would be neat is if they sold different color fly (flies?) - you use all the same other parts and just swap out the fly before you leave the house depending on your mood :)
@@udance4ever that’s actually an awesome idea. Even something like Cotopaxi does where they combine a number of bright colors together on a lot of their products . That would be fun.
@@natlovell122 let's keep nudging Naturehike - they must know how popular their purple one is! I literally just ordered the 15D-Blue just from a functional standpoint (5 oz lighter on sale for $119 - no brainer!) & my heart so wanted the purple one! 💜 I'll be first in line to buy a festival fly when they offer it separately! heck I'd also buy a Forrest green one for instances I want to be a bit stealthier in the woods if the price is right for each additional fly!! like buying shoes 👠 lol
Could u please review the Soul 300 - Treetops please 😄
Great space for my dog.
How can the vestibule be about 64 inches wide when the tent is supposed to be about 83 inches?
Your review is accurate and on-target. This product is not something that I would want to carry with me. It's just another marketing ploy that has very little usefulness in the real world. More is not always better.
What do you do with all the products you buy? Do you store them, sell them or give away?
Just an idea. You could theoretically get two of them and possibly put one at both doors. Just a thought.
Looks like it slopes back toward the tent in your video. Maybe that's just the camera perspective, but looks kinda odd.
I got this. What it only lacks is a mat because you can't put your stuff bare on the ground especially when it's raining.
As someone who is 6ft. 4in tall, that vestibule is a no go for me. Great review.
Luke, How about a best of video containing your favorite gear all in one video in your favorite spot(which we all know is LWM).
With arms like that, Luke, you don’t have to reaffirm your manliness by saying Susie is the one that wanted the purple 😂
I am retired now and the Coleman Darwin tent I have is ridiculously too low inside for an afternoon and evening.
You have to crawl inside on your knees.
I am now modifying a tent I made to go on the back of my Jeep XJ which is 6ft at the highest point. I need to stand up now and not spend every minute on my knees. On another subject, I want to buy a water proof jacket that breaths. Can you review what works for you and tell me features to look for.
The roof of the vestibule is inclined toward the tent, and in case of rain I reckon the water will pass under the fly and end up in the chamber of the tent.
The music at the end sounds like an 80’s theme song music
Might be cool to put your own stove jack in and put a wood stove in there?! Thoughts??
It be REALLY cool if you could give the metric measurements too.
🙏
