Just a tip for others who may try to get an NVMe drive to work: Even if you get an adapter that works, the SSD will be limited to SATA speeds, which caps at around 600 MB/s, so don't waste the money.

    • @tomburnham6640
      @tomburnham6640 3 роки тому +5

Still faster than the 550-560MB/s that the 2.5" drives run at.

    • @szgege32

That adapter for M2 drive is no use. When you put the M2 to the normal slot that goes to the pci exp. interface, the adapter goes to Sata interface and that is much slower. So this isn't worth the money for that adapter, this little adapter is a bit overpriced... Not to mention that there problems with the adapter limits, some of them won't support the drives well.

After getting a Series X I just couldn't stand using the One X and it's lag and slow load times anymore. I followed the same tutorial you did and absolutely have no regrets (also did the thermal compound replacement). I did find a video to restore the startup splash screen which was super easy even though I had to remove the drive again. It really does make the One X run almost as fast as the Series X just tooling around the menus and what not and games definitely load faster. I've let my kids basically take over the One X while I keep the Series X to myself. If anyone has doubts just do it. The One X should always have shipped with an internal SSD, it really unlocks the capabilities of the hardware.

A 1TB SSD costed about $400 when they released.
I know that because I got an XBOX One X and a PS4 Pro at the same time, and realized I couldn't put it in the XBOX ONE X without voiding the warranty. So it went in the PS4 Pro...and the SSD costed the same as the PS4 Pro.
Price doesn't bother me (don't even get me started on my PC), but consoles are aimed at the masses.

Just be really careful. When you pull it apart, when you are removing all the screws, be really careful removing the cable with 2 screws in the plate. Easy to gently remove, if you don't notice when pulling it apart you'll break the connector off. This will remove your pairing controller button and the front usb.

The one X actually was designed with an M.2 in mind probably. It has an unused unpopulated M.2 slot on the PCB. Maybe they wanted to go with hybrid fast and slow storage. M.2 boot, HDD storage or like they just canceled it because of upcoming series SX design. X and One X both use vapor chamber cooling plus the casing is of the same better quality. It's probably a marketing move to hype the use of SSD. I own both One X and a series X. The one X holds up pretty nicely.

    • @JAKOB1977

has anybody tried ti populate the M2. socket on the board?
what is the capacity limit on One X is it 26TB??
The system tolerate 4 drives at one time. (3 external + 1 internal) and recall the mex capacity is 8TB for each socket and max 2TB for the internal, so 3x 8 + 2 internal = 26TB.
how does the Series X works with external SSD drives... are they valid for modern 4K games? or is it only older less demanding games tou can put on external and you need these properitary Seagate MS drives for 4K games?

As far as drives are concerned, regardless of what SSD and adapter one uses, the limiting factor is still the SATA 3 connection to the console.
I put one of them 2TB Seagate SSHD drives in mine around the same time you did yours and whilst it's still no SSD, it does bring the cold boot time way down from stock (41s as tested last night and it's beyond 80% full) it makes the user interface feel responsive, and it just feel like the drive should have been on the console from day one! seriously though, the 2TB SSHD was probably used in prototypes as the elite has a 1TB variant, the one s had the option of a 2TB regular drive, and there was so much buzz around just how much faster things loaded on the one x during development and initial testing.
If I find a game still doesn't load fast enough, I'll just use an external SSD, because USB3 has slightly more available bandwidth than SATA 3, and even if the external drive is SATA based, it still removes the overhead of having to deal with the operating system simultaneously.
I find it funny that you forgot to reconnect the fan, as whilst I had mine apart I also replaced the thermal paste between the heatsink and processor.
it made my console so damn quiet that I was near convinced I'd forgotten to reconnect the fan, but I figured I'd run the console for a while to see if it overheats. About a week later, I found out there's a location in fallout 76 that makes the one x in it's standard form either howl like a PS4 or flat out overheat, so I went there, and for the first time since the upgrade I actually heard the fan spin up! It still wasn't particularly loud though which is great, so if you're still running the stock thermal paste it's well worth the upgrade 👍
As far as thermal pastes go, I hear MX4 recommended frequently, but I just used some arctic silver 5 I had laying about the place for 4-5 years.
    Great video by the way

Xbox One X is using Sata 3 interface so using any 2400MB/s SSD will reduce speed to 600MB/s because its max of Sata 3
Normally best option is typical 2.5 inch SSD with 550MB/s speed.
I also make mod like this on my XOX, system speed and response is superior. Games also working super fast.
Good advice to all, when You open X for SSD replace its good also to change thermal paste on GPU. Original is bad quality and always dry. This operation plus cooling mod (from ebay) makes now my console much colder than originally.

You aren’t going to find a PCIe to SATA adapter. It makes no sense to slow down an NVME drive. There are SATA drives that are M.2 form factor, but they are no faster than a 2.5” SATA drive. The Xbox one/ one s/ one x all use SATA, and there is no advantage to buying a faster drive as the read and write speeds will be limited.

The moment you showed that m.2 drive the PC enthusiast in me knew exactly the mistake you'd made. Don't get me wrong, it is probably an easy one to make because there's several different types of drive using that form factor now. A. SATA m.2, B. PCIE-3 nvme m.2, and C. PCIE-4 nvme m.2. You bought one from the second category.
When I did my own SSD upgrade on this I went for an 2.5" SATA I had lying around because the X only has SATA 3 speeds anyway. The drive your adaptor would have worked with is a SATA m.2 drive, but you'd still have been throwing good money after bad in that instance since you have to use an adaptor and that's extra money, an extra possible point of failure, and exactly the same speed as the 2.5" drive anyway.

As a PC builder I agree it is confusing. No, PCIe NVME are not compatible with SATA M.2 or enclosures - they will only work in PCIe M.2 slots on ATX/ITX motherboards or PCIe cards - they are specifically designed to tap into the PCIe lanes of the CPU. The guy on the channel you refer to is looking into a way to solder the M.2 port on to the motherboard of the Xbox One X as there is a space for one which is interesting, but I have heard that this section of the motherboard is disabled - possibly was designed as part of a devkit or other "internal" purpose. To further answer your question M.2 in 2.5 enclosure is still capped at 6gb/s so you gain nothing over an SSD - other than a bit cheaper - but then you have to buy a ten quid enclosure anyway.

You can get an nvme M2 disc with over 2000 mb/s read/write with casing USB 3.2gen2 USB-C output as external drive for loading the games, but it make no difference over standard sata SSD because the Xbox one X has only USB 3.0 input where you are stuck with max 600 mb/s. The same is for SATA connector inside the xbox one x. It does not make sense to put faster SSD than 600 mb/s since this is limit of the interface. I am thinking about upgrading my Xbox one X with SSD. But I am not sure if it make sense. in few months hopefully series X will be available for the standard price.

    • @retro-unboxing

and yea you can use PCI NVMe on the One X.. most of my drives are NVMe as I use them for other thinsg and I just use PCI NVMe to M.2 NVMe to either USB3.1 10Gbps/1000MB (12USD) or USB 3.2 with 20Gbps/2000MB (35USD) M.2 enclosures.
You can also get thunderbolt3 40GBps (2500MB) enclosures to use with your One X, but they are quite expensive at around 100USD
but you really need to do your own due diligence before going down this rabbit hole.
Last night I finally installed a 2.5" SSD in my One X, as the main system drive for the faster boot-up times, and it was the cheapest 50USD 1TB Netac drive i could find on AliE at a sale. (now the boot-up time is around 30 to 35sec)

and you can easily just move all the 700GB volume from the internal storage to an external fx SSD drive.. it goes pretty fast... stays around stays around 1000Mbps to 600Gbps on Xbox progress bar even though the internal is a 5400RPM but even here the read are pretty good., and then when you have flashed the new SSD systemdrive move it back as that goes way faster from SSD to SSD..
Sofar Im a little unsure if the systemdrive SSD is faster the my external SSDs, like it in theory should be sata3 6Gbps versus USB3 5Gbps.

    • @JAKOB1977
      @JAKOB1977 3 роки тому

One thing Im not sure about is the capacity on the One X.
is the maxmium 18 TB or 26GB?? I reckon 26GB
The system can tolerate 4 drives at once, and the limit is 8TB for each of the 3 external drives and the internal has a limit at 2TB.
so 3x 8 + 2 = 26TB.. but mayb there is hardware limit like the Series X that can max tolerate 16TB but that is because of the max 2 external drives as I recall?? though I dont now if your somewhat limited on the external drives on Sereis X and its only old games you can install and not new 4K.

If you want to take the extra time to fix the splash screen here is the video and steps I used. Very easy. ua-cam.com/video/nG1VNqVeSt4/v-deo.html

just use external SSDs the system can tolerwate like 26 TB (will eat 4 drives at once, 1 internal max 2TB + 3 external 8TB each)
I actually saw faster progress bar moving the 115GB between two external SSDs.. though one was NVMe, but that shouldnt matter as it is still an USB3 sata3 controller.
moving the 115GB horizon file between two external took around 5 minutes and the Xbox One X progres bar peaked at 3.2Gbps, and mving the 115GB file back to teh internal systemdrive last night after I finally installed a cheap 1TB Netac SSD.. it took somewhat longer, and closer to 10min..
the console bootup time is around 30 to 35sec. now but before wiht the original 5400RPM.. just having the games on external SSds I saw up around -80% reduction in loading times.. so its nigh an day, and pop in and loading textures, and frame spikes and all that jazz.. gone.. makes a huge difference

Yes NVMe is faster, but the limit of the disk speed i determined by the connection. If you convert a NVMe disk to SATA, it will only allow SATA speed. With that said a SATA SSD is still much faster. I guess this is a bit of topic, but there are different versions of SATA with different speeds. PS3 had SATA I, PS4 has SATA II and i belive PS4 pro and XBOX ONE X have SATA III. Still, upgrading a PS3 with an SSD is an upgrade in disk speed if you have downloaded games, but the preformance gap wont be as great.
