    One thing people forget when they say that you should connect a USB SSD is that the OS is on the Internal drive. Just running the OS off an SSD makes a massive difference to how the Xbox feels to use.

      Same with my PS4 Pro. Fitting a 4TB SSD didn't half make a difference. Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt is amazing now. For some reason now it defaults to 4K native resolution too. Had to buy a 4K TV because all the edges were cropped off on my old 1080p TV. Can't complain tho as every game I have now plays in 4K whether it's supported or not. NICE BONUS!!
      Just watching this as I'll be buying a used Xbox One X soon and will be fitting biggest SSD possible/affordable into it.

    An alternative option when reloading the OS - it is possible to re-image the Xbox without holding down the Bind and Eject (and without wiping the NAND memory) which will save gamer accounts - simply install the drive, boot up (without holding the Bind and Eject) and you will see a System Error E106 screen - select Trouble Shooting and then Offline Update (with the USB stick connected) - this method will save your gamer account information while still re-initialising the new hard drive (although games will still need to be reinstalled).

      How do the gamer accounts save? are they stored on the system and not the hard-drive? Or do you need to clone the thing.
      Will you need to login to the accounts again? With the password? I bought an xbox off ebay and it has an account which doesn't need a password to login and it has a lot of games I would like to keep

    I did this a couple of weeks ago with instrictions from iFixit, after my One X was refusing to boot with the original HDD and couldn't even install a new image on it. Internet says it's more likely a power supply issue that keeps corrupting the hard drive, but fingers crossed... it's worked so far.
    Edit: Oh yeah, I must have spent 10 minutes at 17:00, figuring out how to put the top cover on. If you got it wrong, you really had to wrench it out to try again. I was sure I was going to break it.

      For comparison sake what is the 4K read speed of a PCIE gen 3/4 NVME SSD?

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 роки тому +8

      The Samsung 970 Evo does about 50MB 4k random reads I think. And considering that it's a 3500MBps sequential reads, notice how those 4k ops aren't _that_ much higher than a cheaper SSD. There's probably faster drives out there, but I don't think you'll find another order of magnitude.
      These numbers are also just scratching the surface, you've also got to consider write endurance, I/O ops per second, etc etc... But when even 20MBps is 100x faster than a HDD's 0.2MBps for 4k, it's a good tangible figure to explain why SSDs _feel_ so much faster.

    Anyone who is a fan of open -world and/or expansive games will love this upgrade. Even a relatively simple game (you'd think) like BFV sees a great increase in loading times when going into multiplayer and the like. Also, techy peace of mind that you know the bottleneck will be fully related to the CPU/GPU rather than other controllable factors.

    Great video. I was a little nervous about changing the mechanical hard drive on my Xbox One X Project Scorpio and I decided to pluge in after watching this video. I decided to go with a Crucial MX 2TB SSD, followed step by step but after turning it up and going to Offline update, I was getting errors E100 - E200 until I remembered that this xbox is on the preview omega, so I went back to a regular system on the old hard drive and after the automatic update pushed by microsoft and then swapping the hd for the SSD, the followings steps for the offline system update were positives.
    Now thanks to your video I'm enjoying again a faster xbox and even quicker load times for my games.
    Thanks a lot. Also hoping that my misadventure will help someone that may encounter
    the same problem I did.

      I was gonna go 2TB with my 1X, but I read that you cant do a system reset in the future without it messing something up, if you upgrade from the factory size of the console. Did you just install the ssd and perform the osu update, and thats it? I thought you had to run a script on a larger size that factory.

  • @ThomasRhin

    Thank you for sharing this great video. I've upgraded my Xbox One X with the very same model of SSD last year. However, i didnt force the console entering manual trouble shooting mode. I just powered on and used the controller to select trouble shooting mode to allow installing osu1. The SSD was initialized under windows 10 for consistency and bad sector check before being installed to the console. So i erased the MBR(with PartedMagic) and then installed SSD into the console. It's pretty import to erase MBR to make it as "uninitialized" because too many users encounter E10x. If the SSD is recognized as fresh new(uninitialized) by OSU, there wont be any E10x issues. Just a kind reminder for anyone who wants to perform a SSD mod. For SSD other than Micron Crucial, you can also choose "secure erase" to achieve the same effect. Only Micron Crucial products dont support secure erase. Besides, only buy standard capacity of the following size 500GB/1TB/2TB. Other capacity will neither be fully partitioned nor be properly formatted by OSU,and you might get the annoying E10x.

  • @DaveSimonH

    Its interesting the different approaches from Sony & Microsoft. With the PS3, PS4 & PS5 (expansion slot at least) the storage is very easily accessable, with no warranty stickers broken to replace that part. Arguably you could also include the PS2, with its expansion slot HDD.
    Its good that you can still remove HDDs on the Xbox One consoles, but its obvious the console build design wasn't planned with users easily replacing that part. The 360 models were easier to replace, but if you used a third party 2.5" drive I believe it required some preparation with files on HDD etc. Whereas on PS3 & PS4, pop in any 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD, grab a USB for reinstallation file and you are good to go.
    I swapped a 1TB Crucial MX500 into my base PS4 at the end of 2020. Despite that model PS4 being limited to SATA2, it is still a good upgrade over my old 1TB HDD. Typically load times are reduced by about a 3rd (eg 1m rather than 1m30s) but some games, like 'Death Stranding', loading the same save from main menu was about 1/2 the HDD speed (SSD 36.81s vs 66.19s HDD). Along with general system performance (the PS4 UI is comparatively pretty sluggish on HDD), improved response when taking video clips, some texture load improvements etc. All in, I've been very happy with the result.
    I think I swapped my PS3 HDD once or twice. I started on a 80GB drive in my 'phat' and when my 2nd PS3 died (yeah 2nd), it was on a 320GB HDD. I replaced my dead 'super slim' PS3 with a used, but boxed slim 160GB and just left the original HDD in there. I still have the 320GB drive, I use it as a spare backup drive in a USB 3.0 enclosure. I used a 640GB HDD in an enclosure, old drive from my old laptop for backup, when I swapped the PS4 internal drives. It allowed me to copy most of my installed games over, saving me from having to reinstall discs, and the PS4s old 1TB HDD is also now in an enclosure and is basically a data mule for the SSD, as its relatively quick to copy things back & forth.

      I got a Ps4 slim at the beginning of 2022 for a killer deal and have been thinking of putting an SSD in it because it will make it faster and it’s super simple. About 2 weeks ago I bought an Xbox One X that I thought just needed to update offline for another awesome deal but going through the process of using the usb I got for the SSD upgrade in my PlayStation and it didn’t work. I’m either going to by an SSD and try to make my Xbox One X work, and better than it did originally but if it doesn’t work I would’ve have wasted money buying an SSD because I’ll just put it in my PlayStation.

    • @DaveSimonH
      @DaveSimonH 2 роки тому

      @@retrochi71 The USB stick didn't work with the XB1X? You tried all the USB ports? Not sure about Xbox, but for the PS4 when using the update file and console reinstallation files, Sony's guide page specifically mention using FAT32 formatting on the USB (along with specific file & folder names). Maybe the Xbox needs that, or possibly exFAT formatting. Alternatively, if possible you could try another USB stick.
      Hopefully you'll be able to work it out, good luck with both consoles. If you do run into issues, the reddit for PS4 & XB1 could be a useful place to ask.

    I know it has been a couple of years for this video but I just did the upgrade and wanted to add a little something. I was getting error E101 during the update process, and after taking the drive out and copying the files many times I read on google that the problem could be the USB drive I was using to run the update from. After trying 3 different brands of USB I was finally able to get it to work properly using a maxell 16gb drive. 1 more thing to add is that the OSU that you download doesn't have the Xbox boot screen, you can either live with that or you can grab it off the old drive and place it on the USB and bob's your uncle. Great video as always.

    Great job on the little details like flat vs rounded screws to release the lower chassis as well as how to get the top cover back on without the need for maidens or firstborns. Two things I would make note of are 1. as far as clearing dust, an air compressor should only be used if you know it has dehumidified air, as rust spatting can be a consequence of a poorly maintained compressor; and 2. the flash drive is supposed to be formatted as NTFS to the best of my knowledge. Worst case for dusting, you can use an unused paint brush and get it pretty well.

    I am really glad I found this video. I have been thinking about replacing our old reliable 360, and while the Series X is a beast, it seems it's not so easy to connect to legacy TV's (use our 360 on a 55" 1080p Panasonic Viera THX Plasma) and receivers (in my case, a 2006 Marantz SR7500). The Series X are also still very expensive here in Canada and because of this, I have been thinking of finding a second-hand One X. Partially because they allow optical audio out, and also because they are $200-275 used now. I would view this as more of a console evolution (a bridge before getting say, an LG OLED TV and compatible AVR to use with a Series X down the road) and knowing you can SSD swap a One X makes this seem like an even better idea.
    Excellent video Sir, and I will use it as a reference for when/if I grab a One X, and want to hotrod it!

    I have an Xbox One I got from my nephew, it would crash a lot, then would go to green screen and stick on start up. He ended up getting a new Xbox one X. I pulled the hard drive out of the xbox one, ran a HDD test program on it on my pc and found it was indeed Bad. I orderd a new 1TB ssd for maybe a hair over $100. Installed it into the xbox one, had to use a thumb drive to upload a file to the xbox so it would format the new SSD and now the xbox one runs better than it did when it was new and loads game much faster than my nephews xbox one x. When his warranty runs out I will put a SSD in his.

This is a known working drive, but the Xbox wanted nothing to do with it. I used an old 16gb USB 2.0 stick I had laying around and it worked right away. So if the option is grayed out for you at first, try a different drive.

    Top tip regarding the use of an external SSD over replacing the internal drive for those who are anxious about taking things apart. What I was trying to say was that Graham worries me sometimes how he just removes screws without keeping track where they came from and as a suggestion, use an ice cube tray to put screws into each well as he removes them at different stages. Eg the first well in the tray for all the screw holding the back case on, then the second well for the next screws and so on. Not sure what I was drinking whilst writing my OP.

      My last experience with HDD to SSD migration has been sector size mismatches and such. Most cloning software wants nothing to do with it, and if they can, I've read reports it'll severely degrade the longevity of the SSD. Whether that's still the case after the year or two ago I did the research, IDK.

    is the bottom of the console not actually flat, or is it just me? serious question though, as I don't think mine is either and i'm not entirely convinced that it's designed that way lol
    Regarding the thermal paste replacement though, my guess is you've just never done it on these things before.
    It makes an unfathomable difference to fan noise, and it also helps with the lifespan of the console because less of the heat is able to make it into the BGA beneath the CPU and the immediate part of the motherboard.
    Sure, it definitely requires more time, effort, and patience, but if you haven't done it, you really should!
    also, the factory thermal paste is genuinely terrible from factory is probably a good reason to do it too 🤣

    • @no1ce
      @no1ce 3 роки тому +2

      Since the internal drive connection and interface is sata, it would not be entirely possible to use specifically an NVMe M.2 SSD. You could in theory use a sata M.2 SSD inside a 2.5" SSD enclosure but truthfully that wouldn't make much sense and would functionally be no faster than a normal MX500, for example. As this is touched on by Graham in the video too. You will be bottlenecked by the sata 2 limitations.

    • @ConsoleTherapy
      @ConsoleTherapy 3 роки тому +2

      It is possible with a MVMe M.2 to SATA 2.5" enclosure, however you would not notice too much difference as the SATA interface (on both the S and X) is "throttled" by the Southbridge IC

      Have still yet to look into this, but my advice is to clean-install if possible, as you can make sure there's no junk or gremlins hanging around. Cloning might not be an option if the old drive has failed as well.
      If you _need_ to preserve all installed games / saves, then cloning would definitely be the way forward though, yes.
