- Since the loading times of my Xbox one X where driving me nuts, i decided to install an SSD. We also replaced the cooling paste of the GPU since the old one was completely dried up. The result is a faster and dead silent Xbox!

Thank you
I cloned and installed my Samsung Evo 870 . Worked great . No issues other than mine was 8 months old and had a lot of sealing strips . Panels stuck to metal housing .
Load times on my heavily modded Skyrim were cut in more than half . Very happy.
Thank you for taking the time to make your video .
Once you clone it is there anything else that you have to do? Or is this all just install it back and it will start up regurarly??
I did this with my xbox back in 2019 but I never took metrics on load speed improvements. Glad to see someone has some data.
Love the video, nice and easy to follow and didn't have more than it needed. Great info and thanks for the links!
For those if us in the US, replace (in the URL) nl-NL with en-US and you'll get the US site.
Thanks again!
Could have given the mainboard a dusting before you put it back in.
Worked perfectly, I had pre-installed games that came with the box, and don't want to download 10 games. Cloning is much easier. thank you
Dude, you don't need to do any of that partitoining shenanigan's just install a formatted SSD and use the USB install the OS from scratch. Much faster and easier. Took me about an hour to do everything (including a thorough clean).
Bro that’s what im saying…just redownload your games and xbox will download your cloud saves…this is making harder than what it is
Or just buy a Series X.
That was my first attempt, but it kept on crashing. So eventually we found the script you see in the video
@@roberthudley2548 Absolutely. Cause there is just an overwhelming stock of the new Xboxs for everyone to get🙄
@@mbc111975 oh I forgot how hard it was to get one .
Thermal pads and paste and an SSD gave a lot of life to my Xbox One X bought used. Its pads were really badly placed with bad coverage and the paste was predictably dried up. Some Noctua paste and Thermal Grizzly 2mm pads got it running better than ever. A Samsung 870 Evo 2TB SSD was the cherry on top. It boots and runs and installs games much quicker and is far quieter.
I’m changing the thermal paste and using a internal 1tb ssd Lexar ns100
Xbox One Elite came with a hybrid 1TB SSHDD.... it's the fastest (Disk I/O) model prior to the Xbox Series models. Absolutely criminal they did not use this drive on the Xbox One X. USB3 external SSD solutions are the best way to enjoy "fast" loading times on the older consoles.
@TheRealLoganYT a 2013 model ? We've moved on.
Yeah for xbox one x better to use cheaper sshd internal drive as it only used sata2
@@flogjam i have a 2013 model ;-;
So you're saying if i get a good external usb3 SSD and put my games on that, it'll load faster than the base hard drive? Sorry if that is exactly what you said I'm just a bit of a noob and needed clarification because it seems too good and easy to be true that just plugging in a better drive external would improve load times.
@@kryosse that's right- as external drives have faster communication than internal ones.
I did this around Xmas to my new to me xbox1x. Stopped by best buy and got a Samsung Evo and a tube or thermal paste. I love the upgrade and fan noise is much better!
BTW I just used a 500gb internal ssd. And i have a 250gb external ssd. It's enough for me. If you look at tflops, it's a pretty good set up for the money. I paid 190 for Xbox and about 70$ for the upgrades. BIG improvement over original xbox, which I sold for 110$

Can't you pay the small fee on the One X to unlock developer mode? If so do that and keep it as an emulator box in the long term.
Great tuto thank you my man this made my day can't wait to try it out!!
my biggest hurdle when it came to replacing the drive was the cloning, luckily I found a drive dock caddy that will do it automatically! 👌🏻

Super easy to clone. Follow the directions found on utube. Takes 20min of research and 2 min to accomplish.
Why are y’all cloning the drives? You could just put SSD in there, hold down power and sync button then reinstall OS then at that point just re download your games and xbox will download your cloud saves
@@ENT931you are correct sir. It's been a while since I've done it. I was also repairing a bunch of one s at the same time. Wasn't really cloning, I was formatting drives and using a utility to set them up.
Did my Xbox One X a few months ago, well worth the effort as it not only boots up much faster but the UI alone is fast and far more stable. Loading the OS to the SSD made a huge improvement to the overall performance of my One X. Before, even when using my external SSD, things could tend to load slower but now everything is much faster. Sure it's not as fast as a Series X but it was still worth it.
Which process did you follow? And what ssd did you use? Thanks
@@mega5046 I just used a Wester Digital Blue 2TB SSD that I had but I'm sure something like a Samsung EVO would be a little bit better. As for methods there are several but if you just plug the new one in it should just automatically format. However if you're in the Xbox Insider Program you MUST leave any beta builds and install the public version of system software, just simply opt-out of the beta updates.
My installation method was plugging it in and having the most recent public update on a flash drive. It worked fine after I backed out of the Insider updates.

Kronaut (also by Thermal Grizzly) is a MUCH better choice than liquid metal Conductonaut for a console. It also has great cooling and you don't have to worry about shorting the motherboard out (which can happen over time too, the metal can leak out eventually, and it doesn't look like you even sealed the surrounding area with nail polish\other safety techniques)
Arctic mx-4 is better choice. I’ve put it on my friends One X apu one year ago and the temps are still great. Also it’s easier to apply than overrated thermal grizzly and heat conduct is pretty much the same also it’s cheaper.
Not to mention he only put it on the die only... you are supposed to put it on the base of the heatsink as well as the heat source. So they connect... but why not a decent thermal paste...... seriously I don't understand why people do dumb things and say it's safe....... it's like they really frustrating.
Thanks for the feedback!
We will definately look into this for our next modding projects :)

@@extremelypuppy Dont worry, it was a long video. I fall asleep during editing all the time.
So far so good but I would never use this liquid metal stuff. Normal thermal like Arctic Cooling is enough
Regular thermal paste was fine for the previous generation consoles. The ps5 produces so much heat it will actually over heat and shut down if you use Regular thermal paste
@@cosocosoful your ps5 will be perfectly fine aslong as you don't go opening it up and taking out the board without knowing how to properly use liquid metal. There is a pad that's attached to the apu and the heat sink that keeps the liquid metal in place without a chance of spillage over told other components causing the shortages.
@@distortgaming538 and we all know how well such foam pads are at limiting leakage...
All PS5 consoles are going to die thanks to this stupid move by Sony. The small 3-5C benefit in cooling the metal provides over regular pastes shows just how close to thermal limits they are flying given that the system shuts down within a few minutes if good 'normal' paste is used, even with the enormous heatsink assembly they had to use. Just bad engineering.
No wonder they STILL haven't enabled the NVMe port, the extra heat that will pump into the system will currently kill it.

Ok does the new SSD’s 870 work as well for this upgrade? 870’s are a good upgrade over the old 860 SSD’s. The guy that make this video or Anyone else knows anything?
@@furrynick The original XBox one is limited by a SATA 300 interface, so for those consoles it probably wont make much of a difference.
The xbox one X/S are limited by their SATA600 interface, which is slightly faster than the samsung evo 860\870, so you wont be bottlenecked there.
As for the difference between the 2 SSD's, according to the link below the performance difference isnt shocking, the price difference however is. So probably keep that in mind :)

You're using liquid metal which could seep oit and short the cpu like u said. Many prefer additin a layer of nail polish on the surrounding semiconductors . You could give it a try to be on the safer side
I have the One X and ran it both with stock HDD and then 2TB SSD. Then I upgraded to Series X and reused the SSD to triple the storage space.
Yes it makes a big difference but due to CPU bottlenecks among other things it'll never touch the speed of the Series X. Red Dead Redemption II used to take about 6 minutes from HDD, 3.5 minutes from SSD, both on One X. Takes 37 seconds on Series X, about 5 seconds with Quick Resume.
Either way it's a great upgrade.
Cant beat 5 years of GPU/CPU innovation with a simple SSD. (especially not if that CPU is an intel and you make the switch to AMD Ryzen glory).
@@kingtech7146 Very true! The Ryzen architecture in the Series X really flies. Even the UI is that little bit more snappy than One X with a HDD, i.e. for loading thumbnails. I noticed this when I was comparing the two after factory resetting the One X prior to listing it for sale. Series X is everything we've seen before but iteratively better, and I'd personally take Quick Resume and the ability to do GameCube emulation in Dev Mode over the Dualsense controller any day!
Yeah, an external ssd was a great upgrade on the xbox one s, but not only is the xbox series x nvme ssd much faster, but due to the cpu, my external ssd is also able to reach peak speeds and runs much faster than on the xbox one s
@@rcg38 Not forgetting network transfer from one Series X to another or One X with SSD is that much faster. I clocked about 650Mbps average going from One X with SSD to Series X and 900Mbps from one Series X to another (both to/from internal SSD).
Quick resume is the balls…..
I have the xbox one elite that has a ssd and I love it still.
With Xcloud coming to Xbox one consoles the one X is worth upgrading since we still can't get a hold of the new series X/S.
It must be area specific as I'm in Tampa, Florida and see the Series S quite frequently.
They are really still that hard to find ?? I got mine with ease a last year.....
I got my series x on ebay back in December and only overpaid a little. 650 shipped free shipping.

Yes, a much simpler solution is to use an external SSD. It may not be as fast as a direct install, but it’s a great improvement over the internal HD
But where is the fun in that?
Also, replacing the cooling paste does miracles for the noise.
It's actually faster via USB 3.0. The console is only SATA II.
@@maligmus The Xbox One (non X) features a SATA II interface, so for that one you would be right. The One X however features a SATA III interface, which is faster than a USB 3.0 port.
@@kingtech7146 In case you have the occasion to answer...
How do we know that the thermal paste of our console is due,
and that it would benefit from a replacement ?
@@Cinetiste That's fairly easy. You know that the thermal paste is not doing his job no more when the console over heat or when the fan is spinning really fast and loudly. Then, the replacement of the thermal paste is good for everything. Less bugs in games, less fan noise, less consumption due to the fan, less overheating problems, and finally less chance for your console to to break down.
Enjoyed the video. The only thing I think might be a good idea is to use an ESD work mat and ESD wrist strap. Static kills!
Very true,
Our workbench has a special non-static (transparent) mat, hence the reflection of the window and the components seemingly hovering millimeters above the wood :)
No need for scripts, PC or partitioning if all you want is a fresh install. One X will support 500GB, 1TB or 2TB SSDs(max). Download xbox offline update and extract to blank usb drive. Insert drive to usb on xbox and after installing ssd boot system holding eject and sync buttons and press and release power while continuing to hold the other two until 2 beeps. Select offline update and it will install the whole OS. Spent more time putting the xbox back together than everything else combined. I used a relatively inexpensive Leven 2TB SSD with no issues.

Should have grabbed a small electronic vac before you started. That looks like it could have been helpful.
It is a 2.5 inch drive. They are pretty standard sizes. You'll be fine. Its not that they use particularly cheap thermal paste, though it sure isn't top of the line stuff. But it also thermal cycles A LOT, which isn't particularly good for longevity. If people would go from gaming, back to dashboard and give it 10 or so minutes to cool down slowly it would last quite a bit longer. But I also understand why no one does that. eh. Is what it is.
Actually it does NOT void the warranty, that is why there are no longer stickers on the back of a console telling you if it is removed it voids the warranty.
I'm having trouble putting the top cover back on. How did you put it back so easily?😮
Can vouche. Xbox does have cheap thermal paste. Decided to check the thermal paste on my series s and it was already dry. Replaced it with kryonaut and the system just seems to run smoother. No more lag when trying to open xbox menu in game.
Boosted the experience of my Xbox One X!
Great Content! Keep ist up :)
Very interesting video. Thank you.
I'm sticking with the One X till the current gen hits mid-cycle refresh, so I'm tackling this tonight. 😁👍
The only thing I do now, I unplug it after each time I played. Why ? I avoid the overheating of the console. If I don't do that, after a couples of days, my console has difficulty reading discs.
It’s a worthwhile upgrade. When I got mine, I compared the two. 15 seconds on Monster Hunter world with SSD, over a minute with HDD. Big improvement. But hardly an upgrade, considering the SSD that comes with the Series X is that much better, and of course all its additional features, although I laugh when someone says it looks better on PC or Series X compared to Xbox One and PS4. I’ve compared them. It does look better, yes. But do you want to spend an additional $2,000-$3,000 for a PC that outdoes the One for that very slight up in graphics, or a Series X riddled with issues? Because it’s barely noticeable, it really is.
I played gears of war on the xbox one s, then the xbox one x, then i upgraded to the series x over 8. months ago and i have no big issues. I have upgraded over to gamepass to get newer games day 1 even tho i have over 100+ games in my library already. I dont wanna have to pay up to 70$ for a cross gen bundle of a game that i might not like. The upgrade from a xbox one s to a xbox one x isnt as noticeable if your tv/ monitor doesnt support 4k. Upgrading from the xbox1x to the xboxSX is a noticeable upgrade that even helped out my competive gameplay on gears of war. The quick resume is great. Its still a quiet console but i didnt come from ps4 so its not much of a difference. In my own experience, ive got to explore more of its benefits and little to no issues. The only issue id say i had was when i tried playing halo infinite the first day and it turned off by itself, and it hasnt happened again. Ive already had more issues with my ps5 and i barey got that one about 2 months ago. Spending 2k-3k on a pc is way different than spending 550$ on a console that is meant for only gaming. The ps3 came out at 500$-600$ day one and thay was capable of much less. With other consoles being around the same price. Idk if youre tryna point out that its better to just stick with your old gen console instead of upgrading, which i wont disagree with, if thats all you need to be satisfied. On the other hand, its been over more than 2 years since i last upgraded so ive earned more than enough money to buy a few consoles now, its safe for me to upgrade at my own expense. By your reasoning, i wouldve barely ugraded from a xbox 360 to an xbox one like 2 years ago and wait to upgrade this one, in about another 2-3 years.
Nah bro you're wrong . Having a console that supports constant 60-120 FPS is definitely a game changer. On apex y'all run about 40 frames on average on PS4/Original Xbox One... My one X runs perfect I haven't experienced any issues personally. Same with my PS5 and for budget gamers the One S that supports up to 120 fps although it isn't 4k should be perfect and for $300 brand new? That's a steal and a very inexpensive upgrade bro and not all PCs are that expensive if you built it yourself and know people for parts.. $3000 is overkill and I wouldn't even recommend buying a PC currently. Wait a few years y'all
Did the same upgrade to my console a year ago with a Samsung 870 EVO and I saw a big improvement and would recommend it to any Xbox One owner....just not very sure about Liquid metal cause it could damage the console.
Artic MX-6 is what im using and its none conducive and it won't eat away at the chip or heatsink over time plus you didn't re do the thermal puddy on the memory you have to roll each one into a little ball and have them repressed onto the chip when you put the heatsink back on to create a sealed contact.
Dam i never heard of redoing thermal puddy on the memory
If im going to repaste my cpu and heatsink i definitely should also do the thermal puddy on the memory?
it is no longer necessary to clone the hard drive. just with the OSU1 file and a usb key
Great video!
How's the fan noise now with the liquid metal? I replaced mine with trusty old AS5 about 7 months ago and I think I've only EVER heard the fan on it once since doing so, and that was inside arktos labs in fallout 76 which just so happens to push one x consoles to either scream like a jet engine at full rated power or just flat out overheat and crash...
Yeah I dunno if it's just a poorly coded part of the game or something, but it puts the consoles through hell, and since the thermal compound has been changed, the fan does spin up, but it's not like it's obtrusively loud. It really is a testament to just how well the consoles cooling system works, and just how crap the stock compound is! Maybe, just maybe, for all the hard work they put into developing the cooling, they should've spent like 2 cents more per console and used a thermal paste that actually bloody works 🤣
Yeah its amazing, the first week or so got me quite nervous since I was afraid I killed the fan (I didnt ever hear it). After some inspection the fan seems to work just fine. It is simply that the temperature sensor is in the CPU/GPU itself, and since that is able to transfer its heat to the cooler much better it wont get as hot anymore.
Personally I think the noise reduction is worth at least as much as the speed gain. 10/10 would recommend.
@@kingtech7146 i legit did exactly the same thing!
I started it, and everything seemed to work, except I could hear the SSHD spinning and nothing else. I tried holding a tissue behind it, no movement, I just didn't want to pull it apart again because if I didn't plug it back in I'd get the luxury of feeling like a complete dumbass 🤣
At least now I've since confirmed it's working as it should and no longer have to worry about it.
Edit: for context, my XB1X has had the stock HDD swapped out with a 2TB Hybrid drive, to bring the console more in line with the xbox one elite that preceded it
bethesda games running creation engine are some of the most ram taxing games out there. if you want your cpu to poop out keep playing those games lol.

@@brettalexander220 Sony are just as guilty of creating bottlenecks though.
They crippled the entire 8th generation by running jaguar cores at 1.6 Ghz, and then they went and stuffed up the mid-gen update by doubling the GPU performance, and expecting it to do 4 times the work, and it sounds like a GE LM2500 in the process
I love swapping my original November 2013 Xbox One with 2TB Western DIgital Solid State Drive as an option.
Ive done this two days ago, I forgot to reset the NAND though is that a bad thing? Missing xbox splash screen atm but ive read it comes back after monthly update.
I did this to my one x with a western digital blue and the more you play that single game the load times improve so you have a more pleasant gaming experience (destiny 2 and fallout4 and outerworlds) were my games and also did new thermal paste and by far way quieter than my ps4 pro that also got thermal paste redone. If you aint in luck still finding a new series x and are planning to keep your one x for some time more I wouldn't pass up doing ssd on the one x. Just be careful with the memory thermal pads some dry up more than the others and start to break apart. updating games and system updates go by quicker than the oem hdd.
ayy regarding destiny 2, how quick is when you pull up your menu to switch to another weapon, how long does it take to transmat to another planet, and how are load times when you start up like a mission?
@@razelighter2010 I don't have times to show but I can say that it was noticeable in menu screen. Going from planet to planet load is also quicker and mission loads depend on your fireteam I've gamed with others and missions wont start till everyone is loaded in so I would had to wait a few seconds before the others to load in other than that solo missions are still loaded quicker. Most of all the hang screens when loading into the next section have been significantly reduced or non existence.
As a series s owner whiskers a normal hdd as an extended Garderobe for last gen games I can tell you that the best thing about the series s is fps boost. The one X has better resolution and image quality but I prefer fps anyday
I'm the same I sold my xbox one x and got a series s. And whilst I was a little disappointed that I'm unable to utilise one x patched xbox one games e.g 4k reoslution etc.I found the fps boost feature made up for. wow looks like a scary teardown, but it might need to be done with what your saying. I have a Xbox One S Gears of War 4 1TB Console Bundle - White so yeah. Did it help with skyrim and fallout 4 load time? any other mods or clean up I should be careful about while I have it opened up?
Hi,
We haven't tested it with those games, but as they are singleplayer games I see no reason why it shouldn't improve the load times.
It looks more challenging then it really is. Just be careful with the flatcables, and if you decide to use a conductive thermal paste (like liquid metal), be careful to not put too much on it, or it might short some of the nearby components.
Good luck! :)

Yes it is possible to use a 2tb hdd in the xbox one series consoles. Anything larger wont work properly.

No, the Xbox one X/S are limited by their older SATA interface. This is the reason we used a cheap SSD, faster SSD's shouldnt make a difference.
There isn't any way to hook one on the board and you'll never get more than half it's speed adapted to it

Nooo.. you never ever touch the cpu paste with anything as fluff and lint can stick to and contaminate the paste.... you apply a Pea sized drop . reassemble, then when your cpu heats up.. the paste spreads out and forms the cpu to cooler seal, 😱... also why didnt you clean the fan out while you had it apart... If you’re in the preview program you need to unregister your Xbox from the program or the offline update won’t work since the Preview program is using newer difference firmware and software you’ll just keep getting errors this is what I did with my One X last year works great .
The Xbox one X has a USB 3.0 port and I use a micro SD reader with a micro SD card.
Could you double the storage, like use a 2 TB SSD?
I'm asking the same question, just bought a 2tb ssd
This would have been a 30 second video for a ps4. Can’t believe it’s so much work for the xbox
Mainly cuz the Xbox one isn't made to be opened
you cant even compare a ps4 to an xbox one x and yet you still try. ps4 sound like a jet when it get hot. how long will it take to fix that? LOL

The intro have me dying 😭 🤣
I think I'm having a brain fart moment.. I followed this guide, used the scripts to copy everything over to my new 1tb SSD, put it in my xbox, then when the troubleshooting page came on I put my USB with the OSU1 update in... whereupon it reformatted the drive and everything I'd copied over was gone! What did I do wrong?
I used to build and upgrade my own PC - and did some builds for others. My God what nightmare getting inside that box. Dont think I'll be upgrading my xb1 any time soon. Think I'll just wait til I can get a series X. 😁
It's quite easy to get inside the Xbox One X. It only takes 5-10 minutes
@@TheKrillmeisterswe Not compared to a PC case it's not.
@@SeekerGoldstone Holy fucking shit. I'm going to ignore your stupid answer
@@TheKrillmeisterswe That was a very hostile way to announce that you've never looked at a PC case before.
@@SeekerGoldstone lol ikr
an sshd has been proven to have 1 second slow performance but cheaper 2 tb replacement than a full ssd. Used one for years it was great.
I replaced my original drive with a 2Tb SSHD two years ago. It's faster than the original HDD, and quite a bit cheaper than an SSD was at the time!
I was sceptical that having an ssd wouldn't make that much difference but when I got a series X it made so much difference so I upgraded all my other consoles with an SSD.
It makes games like the witcher 3 and fallout 4. Games with a lot of loading screens much more tolerable

Its called a typo. No one likes a comment teacher.@@drinkyjac3155
@@TheWhteWolf try that shit again lmao ain't no dam typo. The c isn't even close to the letter k on a keyboard 🤡
@@drinkyjac3155 seriously you're getting yourself all worked up over a C. To the point you feel the need to correct something that no one else had an issue with as they knew what I meant. I think you need to get a life.
What time you thinking actuality xbox one x?
Hey! One question, Will this work for the original Xbox one (2013 edition)?
It will, but the original XBox one has a SATA II connection which maxes out at a theoretical speed of 300mbs (so in practice it will probably be closer to 250).
The XBox one S/X have a SATA III connection which maxes out at 600mbs (theoretical, so about 550 in practice).
Both consoles also have a USB3.0 port on the back, which is 500mbs, so for the original XBox One you might be better off using an external ssd.
@@kingtech7146 Oh Okay Thanks!
I feel the beginning of this video
Too bad you can’t put an M.2 in there I have an extra one lying around, but I don’t have any decent capacity 3.5 in. SSDs, only a couple 240 GB I used to RAID
in the US at least, those "void" stickers are unenforceable and actually voiding it is illegal
Warranty Sticker? I'm glad like you said, it's out of warranty before tearing it apart. I must say though that the only reason any company offers a "warranty" is because they don't guarantee the product they sell. A Gaurantee would be much better, after all that would mean they stood behind their product. A warranty on the other hand the customer has to pay for, often times it's a limited warranty because the Quality is not there. Basically the customer is being screwed while the companies rake in huge profits off of products that are OVER PRICED, made for pennies on the dollar. Warranty's are a useless sales pitch to customers, making them feel as though they're actually paying for something they actually need but don't. I had a lengthy argument with Microsoft about this very issue, you know the deal though, it's a billion dollar company so why should they listen to one of their customers. Like the video by the way.
Can you tell me the difference in temperature with the thermo paste an liquid thanks I hear the liquid keeps it kooler that's why ps5 uses it thank great video
Temperature difference has much more to do with refreshing old, dried out thermal paste with new.
Liquid metal is cooler than thermal paste but it only lasts for extremely brief periods of usage, that's why everyone recommends arctic mx-4 thermal paste on the cpu die.
Not-to-mention the liquid metal will corode the copper housing of the heatsink.
Why not xcloud, correct me if i am wrong but you don't need a xSX right?
Thx!!!!
Yeah but still, many games won't receive a 60 fps update for the One X.
Did this to my PS4 a while back first I went to a 2tb hdd then 1tb SSD the speed is worth it over size upgrade you will instantly notice boot time, game start up time and fast traveling around the map
name of music plz
What is actually funny is that I'm watching this video while waiting for the loading of Farming Simulator 22 on my Xbox One S 😂
Well I subbed for the intro.. we'll see 🤣
You still won’t get quick resume only Xbox series X /S and do that still can’t play next gen games even if you upgrade doesn’t mean you can play both NFL 21 only the Xbox one version but with Xbox series X/S you can play all of them
Still can't play flight simulator though then can you,?
