Tyler Hoechlin did a great job as Superman, even on the CW Supergirl series, despite that series disrespecting Superman to hype up Supergirl. Tyler Hoechlin's Superman in the Superman and Lois series is a great modernization of the character, as he's allowed to act like Superman, while also doing some things different with the character that further develops his character. Tyler Hoechlin does justice to who Superman is and what he stands for, while also showing how Superman is still relevant in modern times.
A lot of people lost their poop with Superman telling Kara she was stronger than him etc, but Clark having zero ego and saying that stuff to help build up his cousin is to me the most Superman thing Superman would say! (and yes - "S&L" is an awesome show and I can't wait for the final season!)
This isn't the same Superman from Supergirl/the arrowverse. That is earth prime (formerly earth 38) Superman, who is just a doppelganger of this Clark. This show takes place on Earth-TUD25, it's similar to other earths other than Superman being the only hero. I think this is a smart move by the showrunners, as having no other heroes present essentialy allows them to make Superman extremely fast and powerful.
I wasn't interested in this show until I saw the "Thanks, my mom made it for me" clip about his suit, then I was sold. It legitimately took five seconds of just writing Superman as he is in the comics to sell me. That just goes to show how badly the character has been handled in recent years.
HBO didn't co-produce Superman and Lois, it was wholly funded by The CW. Yeah, Jordan having anxiety is a normal thing for teenagers, but I think that having Clark as a parent being so heavily affected by this normal, human occurrence helped ground the show.
This. It's such a weird rumor that gets passed around without any evidence. HBO is just a secondary distributor. Yeah, Henry would have been a better Superman and Clark if we had better writers for him for the DCEU. The darkness would have fit better if they were gonna do Injustice
After a decade of Injustice Superman and Zack Snyder’s Superman practically brainwashed a certain group of fans for the last decade, it’s no surprise that Superman and Lois and My Adventures With Superman just feels like a breath of fresh air.
I think the show really knows what makes Superman great. Whenever he’s given a moment for himself, Superman shines. Tyler is in my top 3 Superman actors. Unfortunately, the rest of the show isn’t really interesting to me.
6:43, Right after this threat, he slightly softens the blow by adding that he will use his investigative skills to expose his various crimes and have him arrested. As menacing as he intended to be, he still is depicted as having enough restraint to cause too much damage or exploit his power to brutalize a relatively defenseless man, because at his core, he is a compassionate and honorable person. This is what Snyder’s depiction missed in his depiction of a more flawed, somber and insecure version of Clark. His compassion was far more generalized and his restraint was born more out of fear of persecution rather than compassion for the people around him. Killing Zod could be justified with the lack of other methods to decisively beat him and prevent further immediate loss of life like Kryptonite, by the African warlord was completely defenseless and with his abilities (especially his speed, which he is shown to have better control over in sequels to the point where he can avoid generating pressure waves with his movements), he options to subdue him rather than ram him through a wall, and he too threatened Lois with a gun. It’s not to say every aspect of that adaptation was wrong or that a Superman developing and solidifying his morals with experience doesn’t work (Smallville is famous for it and some elements of that series can be seen in Man Of Steel, most notably Clark vandalizing a bullies truck), but with the trajectory Batman V Superman went, with Clark immediately resorting to killing a normal human and failing to immediately inform Bruce on Luthor’s plans instead of getting baited into a fight, those flaws were never intended to be rectified with character growth like in Smallville.
And this is why I am pissed that they are canceling Superman & Lois. They clicked on every aspect of Superman and family that I practically felt like I was a part of their journey. WB needs to open their eyes and actually consider these masterpieces
Nailed it about this show. Very underrated portrayals. Tyler is one of the best Clark Kent/Superman portrayals we've had. In Supergirl he wasn't as well received, but the Superman and Lois show really stepped up their game with the writing. So good, will miss it when it's gone
To be fair… 🤓 in the end of Crisis when the new Earth 1 was made, Lois said “Boys”. The show when it started it was in Arrowverse, but they made best decision ever in season 2, when the show runners said it’s on it’s own Earth.
I think this video makes the best possible argument for why this adaptation of the character is by far one of the best possible ones ever put to screen. Any "DC Fan" who dogs on it with "dollar store superman" or "cosplay" is missing out on it so much
My conspiracy theory is that some high executive in WB really hates Superman and greenlights every project that will depict him as a bad character. They actively tried to sabotage Superman and Lois with the changes in platform and giving them as little publicity as possible
This is my favorite Superman/Clark of all time. Lois is also amazing. I really wish they made these actors the ones for the movies. Or at least let this show continue for years. They're amazing.
Tyler and Bitsie have such amazing chemistry, it's one of the main reasons this show is as good as it is. I missed the show as it was being released, so I ended up binging it last year and was really upset with myself that it took so long for me to watch these episodes. A shame season four is the last one.
In every fandom there's always a bunch of people who think that a specific character should be a jerk. I remember people saying "Superman isn't a goody two shoes. He bullied people in the old comics". Some even say that DCEU Superman is comic accurate. They think being dark is a good personality trait. Positive people are lame. Even in the Spider-man fanbase there're fans who think Andrew Garfield is the best Spider-man simply because he was cocky. These kind of people really hate nice guys. And don't get me started with Batman fans. They hate to see him smile. They want him to be dark, edgy, cold, rude.
As a Batman fan, yes. I want some of those things. But only for characters like Batman. Because I believe all superheroes walk two paths. Either they walk in the dark, cut from the cloth of Batman's cape. Or they stand in the light like Superman. So archetypal are those first two superheroes that I think they're the models for everything that comes after. A hero that follows Superman's example is never going to be like Batman. So Superman himself damn well better never be.

The thing about this Superman that got me was the beard. They try to keep him clean shaven at first but eventually just give up and honestly, it's not a bad look. Superman (and other heroes) usually has(/ve) a beard to show a time skip or something but seeing Superman with a beard in a normal setting is pretty cool.
Dude, at the end of Crisis, Clark finds out that one of the changes was that he now has two sons instead of one. Johnathan and Jordan. That's why most people would assume Superman & Lois was still Arrowverse.
As a huge Supermnan fan, I am fed up of evil Superman depictions. I just want another feel-good Superman film like the Chris Reeve days. Maybe not as campy, but the classic fly up into the earth and smile at the camera moment.
I didn't have an initial issue with CW Supergirl being STRONGER than Superman because in some comic stories; that is accurate! However, it was the fact that they constantly had to make it known that she IS stronger and even worse Supes was the one who had to drive that point home at least half a dozen times; as seen in your montage. Seriously, there were gassing him up at the start of Season 2 like he was HIM but it got watered down a lot especially in the Season 2 finale when he was no longer that guy anymore smh
What an excellent, well thought out, and concise analyses/review of this show. Spot on on every point. I had no hope for this series and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is.
It's a real shame that this is the version of Superman, it's outstanding cast is the one that is getting candled. The last 3 seasons have been consistently fantastic, and if anything has improved. I don't know about season 4 though don't know if it's out yet. And the reason for it being canceled is just stupid, it will conflict with James Gunn's vision! I am looking forward for Gunn's take on Superman but that's over a year away, another season of Superman and Lois could be made and released in that time. I guess the one positive form this show being canceled prematurely, is that at least we can say that it has been consistently good. Unlike a lot of CW shows, kind of bitter sweet when you think about it.
@ 3:15 I believe the show WAS taking place on the same Earth. Lois having twins instead of just Jonathan was a crisis change and it was mentioned at the end of the event, Lois says something about the boys waiting for Clark and he responded with "Boys? Plural?". Then somewhere during season 2 of the show the showrunners decided they didn't want to be apart of the cw nonsense anymore and had John Diggle claim they're on a diff earth. It made no sense, still doesn't, but it's whatever doesn't affect a whole lot.
Episode 1 and 11 together form almost a perfect little origin for Superman. If you haven't watched the episodes in-between, some of the main plot in 11 isn't quite going to make sense. But if you like those ones enough, you'd probably enjoy just watching the whole season. But those two are definitely the best episodes, of probably the whole series.
Geoff Johns wrote a truly great, modern Superman run just shy of ten years ago that did a lot for a non-Elseworlds version of the character, firmly honoring the legacy while showcasing dynamic characterization. Too bad it all got away from itself when the New Krypton arc it led to went bad about halfway through, but "Up, Up, and Away", "Last Son", "Superman: Brainiac", and "Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes" are great. Action Comics #900 is another associated stand-out of the era.
It's a nice change, superhero movies were moving for a while into a dark and edgy vibe, and most superheroes are not that. This series gets it, and i hope James Gunn get it too, or we might get another bomb like the snyder dcu.

I feel bad for sleeping on this, epsecially when I loved Tyler in Teen Wolf and planned to watch it in the first place before the DCEU made me sour on watching DC live action in general. You were right, Superman shouldn't be seen as some kind of god or messiah figure like the movies try to portray himself as. That's the last thing the man himself wants to be seen as. There's a reason he's called a boy scout.
Tyler Hoechlin >>> Henry Cavill Not saying Henry is an inferior actor, but Zack Snyder proved he doesn't know sh!t about the dichotomy of Superman and Clark Kent
CW actually do pretty good with Superman, hint hint, Smallville( some of the best work in tv show history) and one of the best if not the best Clark Kents/Superman
I was down with Hoechlin the moment he showed up in Supergirl. He really is being slept on. Also a fun fact, Tyler also voices Sephiroth in the Final Fantasy 7 remake games. Why is this important? Because Sephiroth's other notable voice George Newbern also voiced Superman in Justice League Unlimited. So Sephiroth is 2 and 0 on being voiced by Superman.
Agreed 👍🏽 100%. Wanna now when I realised this is the best Superman since Reeve? When Doomsday was beating the crap out him, I felt bad for him. When Cavill fought Doomsday...I felt nothing. ☝🏽But UNPOPULAR OPINION? In appearance,Hoechlin would’ve made a better Bruce Wayne
The weaker aspects of the drama is how it tries to make Lois right in every situation even when shes wrong and how soft it makes Clark in thosw situations instead of Stern. Something the animated series of Superman got right
I remember months ago kind of saying the 2020s as a possible "renaissance" for Superman after the characters dark age of the 2010s as well as say "Superman & Lois" being seen as the best piece Superman media in years, "My Adventures with Superman" despite myself having a hard time getting into it.....does have its audience and even the comics seem to be giving us future classics like "The Warworld Saga". Maybe James Gunn's "Superman" will be a hit and we may get a great Superman miniseries starring Brandon Routh. While "Superman: TAS" and "Superman & Lois" are easily the two best Superman shows with how they go above and beyond with their quality. All a Superman show really needs do for me is to be is good comfort and the George Reeves show "The Adventures of Superman", "Lois and Clark: The New Superman Adventures" and even "Smallville" succeed in that regard.
Dammit… I wasn’t trying to watch any CW show after Arrow, especially not this one. I thought it was going to be another deadbeat Superdad with CW Tween Drama mixed in.
My Superman is Tom Welling, but Tyler is good.
I never realized how much I like super man until I started just talking about the stories I read.
Thank you for saying this. Tyler is the goat for me so far after reeves
Also. This isn’t a CW show. This produced by HBO, just like Stargirl. It was only streamed on CW
I've seen this rumor practically since day one. No idea why. It. Is. Not. True.
i love this show and i think tyler does a great job playing Supes. i am pissed its being cancelled after this upcoming season
What an excellent, well thought out, and concise analyses/review of this show. Spot on on every point. I had no hope for this series and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is.
Also, the way they handled Ma Kent dying OHMYGOD I CRIED A FKN RIVER
Agreed 100%
The end is a week and a half away and I am NOT ready. The chemistry between Tyler and Bitsie is unmatched.
IM GLAD SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT THIS SHOW MANNNNNN ITS GOOD
He reminds me of the 50's Superman George Reeve.HUGE COMPLIMENT!!! Minus the boys pf course.
Yep finally someone actually breaks down the beauty of Superman and Lois from the music to the acting from Tyler is just fucking glorious
Pilot and scene he reveals to sons is one of best things from Superman i have seen..a too show indeed
I watched ten minutes of this show, and I was hooked.
You convinced me, I'll go check out a few episodes from the series.
You get a sub simply because of that 'I didn't know you came here to disrespect me' clip. That edit was funny as heck!
It's a nice change, superhero movies were moving for a while into a dark and edgy vibe, and most superheroes are not that. This series gets it, and i hope James Gunn get it too, or we might get another bomb like the snyder dcu.
I love Superman and I'm happy he is slowly but surely getting more and more respect
10. Twisted Metal
9. Marvel: Agents of Shield
8. The Lincoln Lawyer
7. Batman: The Animated Series
6. Supernatural
5. The X Files
4. Party of Five
3. Smallville
2. Superman and Lois
1. Gotham
My top ten favorite TV Shows (Superman and Lois included)
All I hear are facts
Somewhere in the multiverse, there's Henry Cavill playing this version of Superman and everyone loves it.
The chick playing Lois looks just like Sid from Ice Age!!! Her eyes and face drive me nuts!!!
12:08 Always remember, you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
I really love superman and this show is it.
My live action Superman Ranking
1. Christopher Reeve
2. Tyler Hoechlin
3. Tom Welling
4. Henry Cavill
5. Brandon Routh
6. Dean Cain
Tyler Hoechlin >>> Henry Cavill
Not saying Henry is an inferior actor, but Zack Snyder proved he doesn't know sh!t about the dichotomy of Superman and Clark Kent
CW actually do pretty good with Superman, hint hint, Smallville( some of the best work in tv show history) and one of the best if not the best Clark Kents/Superman
My fav superman
I've really enjoyed this show, which I didn't expect to after how he was written in the Supergirl series.
make one about smallville, great video BTW🔥
Can we talk about the amazing music too?
I was down with Hoechlin the moment he showed up in Supergirl. He really is being slept on. Also a fun fact, Tyler also voices Sephiroth in the Final Fantasy 7 remake games. Why is this important? Because Sephiroth's other notable voice George Newbern also voiced Superman in Justice League Unlimited. So Sephiroth is 2 and 0 on being voiced by Superman.
I hope you happy, cuz they're making a Superman reboot. 😄
The plots gets a little out there but the themes and characters are there
Agreed 👍🏽 100%.
I agree. My favorite Superman iterations to re-watch are Lois and Clark and Fliesher's Superman cartoons and, of course, Smallville.
Erica Durance and Elizabeth Tulloch are my favorite lois lane
Dammit… I wasn’t trying to watch any CW show after Arrow, especially not this one. I thought it was going to be another deadbeat Superdad with CW Tween Drama mixed in.
But you made amazing points about how Superman’s been dogged lately, I’ve also heard good things about this show, and now I’m thinking I might check it out.
smallville is also up there
2:14 dude this was basically how Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 ended and treated Peter Parker. It’s like the same team wrote it.
I would really love to see you do a full video on their version of lex luthor !
Till this day my favourite Superman & Lois relationship adaptation is Smallville's
