      With how much attention this would bring to your movie and the behind the scenes work that goes in to a film, I don't think many directors, producers and special effects companies would mind. It just promotes the film, the people and actors. It also helps people who might like to do this as a career get some idea of how it all works and also shows how much hard work goes in to everything these people do. If not for people like this it would not matter how good your actor is a lot of films would be shit without these people who love what they do.

      Nope...it would be an overkill for the taste of this movie...we don't render the grim scene looks with futuristic technology as well. unless its really well lit or bright or pure...still would look not-fitting, specially when it was mentioned that it was categorized as a non-human weapons. *IMO*

      or the guys who did the weapons for DOOM the movie with carl urban, or just put some G36K/UMP45 with the SL8-like stock (with some hard metal looking frame) and BOOM you have a fucking badass weapon futuristic enough for the alien-universe but pretty enough to see them as not military grade but as for high security personnel or private forces.
      because the AUG might look futuristic FOR US , like for 21st century civilians but it just doesnt fit to the alien movies

    I like watching Adam on these. He has both genuine enthusiasm for the material and the personal background to talk about it from a knowing perspective. The discussions he is able to have with the people behind the scenes is much more interesting because they do not have to explain anything to the host of the show. Instead he can do a quick "for the camera" explanation then ask more depth questions to the crew.

      There are groups in Afghanistan that have been known to use bolt action and muzzle loading weapons. ISIS was using StG44's and MP40's they found in a warehouse in Syria. In the Kosovo War a WWII era anti-aircraft gun shot down a F-117. In Ukraine there are groups using machine guns that first saw service in 1912. The US Army's M2 .50cal was designed in 1918 and has only had 2 changes during that time. Just because something is old doesn't mean that it isn't useful.

    i was actually really liking the look of covenant and despite not enjoying prometheus was getting excited about the release however i think Ridley had massively dropped the ball with the weapons as shown in this featurette and might even be a bit of a deal breaker for me. i think it hugely takes away from immersion especially when so much effort has gone into set design.
    to me it is the same as making a modern war film set in present day yet arming them all with muzzle loading muskets.

    • @Ch0pj0b
      @Ch0pj0b 7 років тому +7

      Obviously you don't realize what future weapons would be like.
      If it is hot enough to melt metal it is hot enough to melt who is shooting the weapon.
      If it is electronic the surge from the battery produces upon shooting it would produce a lot of heat also.
      Rail type weapons if you can work out the battery situation could erase memory due to electromagnet radiation.
      Gas systems are the best and the system to shoot. but only if you are shooting suppressed in a enclosed area.
      2093 is 70 years away. look how much hand held weapon systems have not changed in 70 years.

    • @spartan0771
      @spartan0771 7 років тому +2

      To be fair the AK and all of its design children are based off of the German design started in 1942. While it does indeed not appear the best, it is pretty realistic and practical. Weapons don't evolve as much as what we tend to think. Maybe it fires a smaller round that does the same damage and has a fifty round magazine. Bullet advancement is more likely than the mechanics changing that fire them. They're just going to get smoother and jam less and wear out slower, but bullets with greater aerodynamics or faster speed that would allow for a smaller bullet to do the same impact damage would probably be the direction things go. What changes do happen to weapons won't be visual in most cases, I figure.

  • @Freelancer117
    @Freelancer117 7 років тому +58

    Adam's interview is fine, the prop design is lazy. It's the future, by a significant margin, but they've decided to throw some crap on modern-ish weapons and call it good.

    • @olppano
      @olppano 7 років тому +2

      Summer Heat Paintball Outdated in what way? M4 and M16 are continuing in US military atleast 10 years and is propably replaced with something similar in tech.

    • @summerheatpaintball5334
      @summerheatpaintball5334 7 років тому +1

      the original DI design of the ar is outdated. Piston driven weapons like the HK 416 and FN 16 SCAR are superior, though not as cost effective or modular. I still prefer an AR 15 to pretty much any rifle because of those two things but piston driven systems are a significant jump. Eugene Stoner was a huge fan of piston operated and honestly, I would bet that if he redesigned it later in his career he would not have opted for direct impingement gas systems.

    • @olppano
      @olppano 7 років тому +1

      Summer Heat Paintball I wouldn't say that it is outdated system only because of the DI design. It's pretty minor difference unless you work in a really ruff environment. Gas piston system is even older invention and AUG uses it. In the end majority of the modern assault rifles are too similar regarding reliability and ballistic performance that it could have significant impact in most cases. I still agree that the gas piston system is better.

      More modern than what? The Pulse rifle is completely unrecognisable from a Tommy gun.

    • @jayjay53313
      @jayjay53313 7 років тому +11

      Enderwiggan1 the people in this movie depicted as civilian researchers that do not have access to military grade weapons at that time. Just like guns that non-military could buy in Europe, bank guards only get old Remington shotgun that was already around during 1890's. Hunters get old ww1 Springfield 1901. No m16, no steyr. Put aside America that lets people buy assault rifle

      I'm guessing you were too busy actually watching and listening to the dialogue, because they covered the point you're whining about, on the one minute mark.

    Futuristic gun? A Steyr aug? That is a gun from the 70's. This year it is 50 years old actually.
    This guy talks about it like it is a brand new gun. They were still working on a rail? After 50 years they didnt develop it yet? Right.... Just for your info, the rail has been an option for like 30 years.

    • @ErwinHolland.
      @ErwinHolland. 7 років тому +23

      I dont know. You would have to ask him. The gun is 100% sure a Steyr Aug. Variations of the Steyr Aug has been in use in the Australian army for around 30 years. (called the F88 Austeyr)
      The Australian army has been using them since 1988.

    • @spartan1701
      @spartan1701 7 років тому +41

      The version in the film is the f90 I believe. It's the new upgraded AUG for the Australian army.

    • @randybutternubs3689
      @randybutternubs3689 7 років тому +21

      It's a new upgraded model of the AUG, so technically yes, it's new

    • @ErwinHolland.
      @ErwinHolland. 7 років тому +3

      You can buy a (upgraded) Colt 1911 new too, doesnt mean it is a new gun.
      A upgraded Steyr Aug, is still a Steyr Aug. It is a upgraded version of a 50 year old gun.
      A upgrade doesnt make it a different gun. Its just a different variation.

    • @randybutternubs3689
      @randybutternubs3689 7 років тому +11

      Erwin Holland But it does make it a new model no? The Hudson H9 uses the 1911 design but it is considered a 'New' pistol. Is the AK-12 not a "new" gun since it uses a mechanism from 1947?

    What a terrible choice of armaments. Pretty much several hundred year old weapons??? Sounds more like prop department did not put a single dollar to make weapons ideal to the alien universe, and just used some modern weapons used in movies that depict current-day. A huge failure to the alien fan-base.
    John Bowring should feel ashamed.

    • @LaughingMan44
      @LaughingMan44 7 років тому +3

      Exactly it woudn't be hard to do...If they can travel to different solar systems you'd think they'd have come up with something more effective than powder burners. I get it's easier prop wise to use stuff that exists, but the orignal M41A was based on a Thompson but you can hardly tell.

    • @lovecchio420
      @lovecchio420 7 років тому

      Laughing Man to the comment above me. It's called progress, an a brick cell phone worked fine , you still have one? So many things just like this , but I give up, you are right.

    • @LaughingMan44
      @LaughingMan44 7 років тому +2

      Because modern body armour makes 5.56 highly ineffective, and 7.62 NATO is too heavy to lug around. If you're shooting at goat herders in the Middle East it's OK, but you'd think in the future they'd develop better ways of doing things. Not to mention that a powder-burner with recoil is a bad idea in a high-oxygen environment and zero-g (spaceships). And at the very least, you get new weapon systems coming out every year at Shot Show at an every growing rate. So it's pure laziness to throw in an M4 and AUG, and ignorant to excuse it.

    • @LaughingMan44
      @LaughingMan44 7 років тому +2

      Of course you don't want anyting that looks impractical either. I think a lot of the weapons in Ghost in the Shell were done pretty well for example.

    Love the BTS and film technique videos guys!! More please. I've always found it really interesting how they handle firearms on sets. A lot of people (especially the 'old boys' of 60s/70s movie making) think it's overkill and "why on earth would you practise firearm safety with prop/blank-firing weapons..." but I totally stand behind it. We live in a world where, unfortunately, most people have seen news footage of school/movie theatre shootings or other active shooter scenarios to the point where every person on a film set from the actors to the gaffers deserve to feel safe and to know with absolute certainty that they're not going to get accidentally shot (as does and has happened from time to time), and good firearms training (like not pointing even fake weaponry at anybody or not putting your finger on a trigger until you're ready to fire blanks) is an important part of that process.
