      Really ? Because I only found Xenomorphs and rare few occasional things to actually be CG.
      Most of the sets are practical and reflect fairly well in the movie.

      Yes,but they just used the practical xenomorph as reference for the cgi model,so you aren't going to be seeing it in the film

      Who said anything about Prometheus? He was talking about the facehugger in this video, at 4:33. And "Not even remotely related" isn't just an overstatement, it's wrong. The entire premise of Prometheus was showing that all of these creatures originated from the same source, AKA, they're 100% related.

      Where were there eggs in Prometheus? The only thing shown on the ship is the cylinders of the black goo (which, in Spaihts' original script, _would_ have been eggs, but then they got Lindeloffed....)

      I know right? The later ones remind me more of a crab/crustacean or something of that sort. The one they show here looks way more insectile and "bristly", limbs all curled up like every long-legged dead bug or spider I've ever come across.

      Dimitri Bitu the alien part feels tacked on, I do wish the studio hadn't pandered to fans to add a xenomorph in it. but that aside the characters in the film itself does many dumb things tbh

      Sorry for the super late reply, but I do kinda feel that this is Scott's version of Aliens. There's a lot more action, the creatures get a deep dive for their their creation, soldiers play a prominent role, there's an alien that sneaks aboard the starship and attacks after everyone thinks they're safe.
      Not slamming the film at all, but I do feel like it has a lot of commonality.

  • @mugenmark

    I do love the attention to detail that Ridley puts into his films by using as much practical effects as possible. It's all too easy to make films a full on cgi fest, but seamlessly blending them into practical effects and miniature models is what makes sci fi looking so realistic. Thanks for this Adam and the Tested gang.

    Loving the discussion on how Ridley Rolls with the punches regarding it having rained on set during what was essentially a "making of" video from Adam, and then by the time we came to this set in the movie torrential rain set in - because although the scenes, especially when calling for Backup popped with the rain, so many aspects were re-written on the fly to compensate. There is a Creator of all Creators.

      Lol why would they build puppets and suits, to not use them? They use CG versions for heavy action scenes, where the entire creature is moving and jumping on screen. For close ups and non-action scenes, they use the practical versions.

      I've seen fan made suits that look better. The suits in AVP looked better.
      The original Big Chap looked better! In 1979! How?!?!
      The answer is simple, they don't care. The animatronics look bad, the suit looks faker than the original.

    • @THEremiXFACTOR
      @THEremiXFACTOR 7 років тому +15

      Jasper Moore There are a number of close-ups of the aliens in the movie. None of them looked practical. In this video they said they were making models to scan in to the computer. Also, what seems to happen a lot these days is they attempt some practical shots, but decide to go with CGI in the end. The same thing happened in the Thing prequel (2011). Just because they spend a shit load of time and money making models, it doesn't mean they will appear in the final cut. Anyway, it's pointless arguing about it. We can wait until everyone has seen the movie and they can see for themselves how the alien effects were done.

      My opinion, we are getting too reliant on computer assisted design and printers over hand work, it is just the same issue we had with Digital Effects. Such a shame. Bad enough to see the practical make-up and creature effects get pushed aside, now the prop making? Lame. And for all those digital art promises, you still need practical skills to make it work & look good.

    Unpopular opinion apparently: They use the practical models as a reference for actors on set and later as a lighting reference for animators converting the practical model to a computer generated model. I think it really does make the creatures look really good. As much as people love practical models, CG really makes them feel more alive. Its like Yoda in Star Wars, the puppet looked better but the animated model felt more alive and like a real character.

    i think the reason he does it is because the reaction from the cast is more realistic with this kind of set

    I'm a fan of CGI. Good CGI is as hard, if not harder to make compared to practical effects. They are also costly too. So I don't get why people get upset when filmmakers use CGI. I'm not paying money to watch practical props. I'm paying to watch a good piece of story and if CGI can help get the job done then I'm all for it.

    • @Kiabugboy
      @Kiabugboy 7 років тому +11

      leonghk12 ruins the immersion, especially in a creature horror. you can feel the true horror of seeing something that looks like it exists in the real world, because in practical it actually does. when you use full CG your brain immediately picks up that all we're seeing is a computer animation

    • @Zoomat4
      @Zoomat4 7 років тому +2

      The thing with practical effects is that they kind of limit your possibilities, especialy regarding movement. Covenant is the first movie where you can see the aliens move freely, i think that's cool. In the first 4 movies I could never quiet figure out if the alien where supposed to move like humans, animals, monkeys, insects... it always looked a bit off.

    • @Kiabugboy
      @Kiabugboy 7 років тому +3

      Zoomat4 seeing the alien move freely and and jumping around in full view is what made it not scary anymore, you're only seeing a computer animation running around. it's much creepier when you're left to wonder and use your imagination

    • @Zoomat4
      @Zoomat4 7 років тому +1

      Aldrich Hezekiah Yeah but that was the point in Covenant the xenomorph is supposed to be not as scary because it's not the real bad guy anymore, Scott is kind of killing the Alien's myth to push the prometheus' plot. I think it's being close minded to think that cgi cannot be scary, done right they totally can. I thought the neomorph were super freaky.

    • @Kiabugboy
      @Kiabugboy 7 років тому

      Zoomat4 CGI can be scary, but here they failed.do you have any sources of Ridley Scott actually saying the reason the alien was full CG was because he was Killing the alien myth. if that was the reason then he just ruined one of the most iconic creatures of all time and really wasted giger's hardwork

    Computer generated sucks period.
    The film Alien, in a word, EPIC!
    Nothing comes remotely close to it in the annuals of science fiction based artistry. HR Giger's creation is absolutely the best ever alien. The use of CGI should be to enhance prototypical shots. Not replace them altogether.
    Everything came together in Alien. The director, producer, actors & actresses, special effects, musical score......EVERYTHING!
    It stands as the finest example of cinematic photography and story telling.
