    The M37A3 actually has an interesting lore reason for why it's being used by the marines so far into the future. It wasn't made for the military, it was a civilian market shotgun made by Armat to get in on the market of people who like to buy modern reproductions of older guns, kind of like how some companies make modernized M1897 Trench Guns today, and it got pretty popular. But the Colonial Marines started noticing squads using their personal requisition allocations (which are a real thing in the modern military) to purchase them for personal use, or just bringing their own from home when they were deployed and decided "well, if hundreds if not thousands of Marines are spending their requisition on these shotguns instead of other things, maybe there's something to it." and got Armat to make them a proper military model.

    This was wonderfully charming. Jonathan's enthusiasm for the franchise was evident throughout and elevated the video! A reaction to the firearms of Alien Isolation would be fascinating since they take more of their inspiration from the 70's aesthetic of Ridley's original film and less from the ubiquitous inspirations of Cameron's sequel. 16:27 If i had to wager a guess - this weapon functions on the same principle as the real life gyro jet (upscaled and improved) or the warhammer boltor. In warhammer, the main problem with the boltor is recoil - because it combines a traditional firing casing with a projectile which also has rocket properties (the main failure of the gryo jet). By attaching the entire gun to a rig and harness system with built in stabilizer and mechanical supports: you provide a platform to take the recoil and support the wait of the gun. Think of a Mark 19, with rotary magazine instead of belt, and longer projectiles which include high thrust propellants for rocket flight.
    Oddly enough.... this is doable with current technology. It would be clunky and a bit unwieldy, but we could actually produce this weapon today. It's not far off from the idea behind the OICW, but with projectiles which include rocket propellant after initial ignition of the conventional casing propellant. Perhaps not all that practical with current technology, but able to be made. Take a standard 40mm grenade, double the body length of the projectile, and have a double firing sequence where by it's launched from a rifled barrel and upon exiting - automatically extends fins and ignites the rocket propellant to perhaps as much as double the range of the projectile.
    The recoil - from firing such a heavy round would be extreme - but that becomes a non-issue if you did have the aliens universe rig and suspension system: or if it were mounted as such implements commonly are. It's not the worst idea for a gun which I've seen come from scifi media, but over time we've discovered that rotary magazines just aren't very practical. They're big, heavy, clunky, unwieldy, difficult to carry multiples of effectively: a belt is simply more efficient in terms of loading mechanisms, reliability and transporting them. Still - the round and weapon, as depicted, could actually work, using existing technologies available to us today - which is rather fascinating.

    On the 'why do we need full auto and separate burst versions of the pulse rifle'? It's mentioned in the weapons lore entry that the burst version was intended to preserve ammo with newer soldiers prone to panic fire. (And that it fell out of favor when it turned out that said panic fire was actually saving a lot of new marines lives.) The Hyperdine break open shotgun is mentioned as a civilian design that some marines got for themselves. Honestly the lore pages for the weapons were some of the most interesting bits of lore in the game.
    Edit: Also hope that he does a second part, some of the unlocked guns have fascinating backgrounds, like the ones made originally for W-Y security, or the one who's design was freely given to break away colonies to make.

    There’s backstory of the weapons… the SMGs we’re used when merchant ships were boarded by pirates, heirloom shotguns were used on colonies, flamethrowers were for agricultural use, pistols for CQB/self defense and some clases in game (medic) can’t have 2 primaries so a pistol is a must plus when you eventually run out of ammo for the pulse rifle that pistol is a life saver also *switching to your pistol is faster than reloading*

    A fun note on the pulse rifle, there's an audiobook (name escapes me at the moment) that goes through the whole history of the rifle, according to lore it was built by a descendant of John Moses Browning, and had a similar story to the "potato digger" machine gun where John showed up with it and they all laughed at him, until a few thousand continuous rounds later (unheard of at the time) of his machine gun still running.

If you've never driven down the road with your electric windows shorted out (after you just rolled them down no less) and then it starts raining then you have no real idea just how valuable the crank window actually is. P.S. I speak from experience where the window was rolled down, shorted out and then it started raining. The design is fantastic, the sound is so unique and meaty, and it tears through xenos like a hot knife through butter. And Drake couldn't just drop it when it ran out of ammo in the hive fight, he had to waste precious seconds clawing the rig apart.

    The thing about the Colonial Marines you always have to keep in mind is that they do have to deal with threats aside from the Xenos. So while they do have specialized weapons and armor developed to combat them (as any military has done with any specific threat in history) they also have a range of equipment used for other problems. The Kramer 50 isn't much use against Xeno's, but if memory serves it did pretty good in the Aliens/Terminator crossover comics, putting down T-101's with a single shot to the ol bucket.
    As for the Flechette, I think the rounds have a piercing effect able to hit multiple targets, useful when backed into a deadend hallway but not much else.

      i dont know... Jonathan has that typical high horse British attitude... just watch the video with Ian from Forgotten weapons, when they bring up civilian owner ship of weapons (that means me and you) he gets very defensive and apathetic like he doesn't care... hes apart of the the rare British hierarchy of special gun owners... and people like him a very arrogent because they know they can touch and shoot these special weapons that no one else like them can... so if you were like that you would want it to stay that way...

      @@hellishcyberdemon7112 The UK has approximately 600,000 licensed gun owners out of a population of about 67 million. Many more also own air rifles and air pistols or air softs and so on. UK laws require applicants to show "good reason" for owning rifles and antique cartridge pistols but, in theory, anyone of good character can own a shotgun, unless the Police can provide a good reason for refusing. But - unlike the USA (and some other countries) - militia service and self defence - do not count as valid reasons for firearms ownership in the UK.

    To be fair in Aliens we see Weyland-Yutani's meddling in the Marine Corps by having Burke tag along to ensure specimen retrieval but also having Gorman in charge so the Marines would be lacking proper leadership to oppose Wey-Yu's goal so it's not impossible they prevent the Marines from creating acid-resistant armor and better weapons to combat the Xenomorphs when Wey-Yu wants them alive.

Quick comment that may have been made by somebody else before, the Hyperdyne company is mentioned in the movie Aliens (it is true that originally it was supposed to Cyberdyne). It is supposed to be the manufacturer of the android Ash from the original movie. Burke says in the movie that the android that "malfunctioned" was a Hyperdyne 120 A2 model. Great video again

      - The M16 from GTA III which fits 60 rounds in a 30-round mag while being capable of laying down perfectly accurate sustained fire at, like, 25 rounds per second;
      - The Ruger and M60 from Vice City which are fully automatic but chug along so slowly they might as well be actually semi-auto and repeatedly tapped;
      - And finally, San Andreas with weird magazine capacities and gun sounds.

    Don't know if Jonathan Ferguson reads the comments - but iron sights as a backup when you're using something that requires a power source isn't a bad thing. Sure power sources will be 50x smaller by then... but you're also entering a combat zone where things can go sideways super fast.

    in fairness to the burst rifle, the precision adjustable stock appears to indicate a dedicated marksman's weapon. In-game lore mentions they were Accurized as well. the longer sight radius and modified cocking handle seem to be related to its status as a failed weapon that saw limited use, as described in the in-game lore. It could be that these were changes being prototyped for the next generation of pulse rifles, but when the M41a3 fell through they were scrapped with the rifle.

    Actually Jonathan, break open shotguns make alot of sense in the setting: I know it's not used in the game, but only a Break-open allows you to load specialised under or over-length projectiles. I imagine the shotgun being more of a utility tool then a primary weapon (which it is today already) and being capable to load different sizes in projectiles could be useful. Maybe a tracking dart to follow an alien to a nest, some sort of flare or incendiary device, explosive slugs, stakes, idk...
    While pump guns can handle different loadings already better then a semi auto, only a Break-open would allow you to load an oversized projectile

    Fireteam weapons with different manufacturers were based on their market purpose.
    Some pistol can sold for MP, Army, LE and Civilians, while some were only for MP, LE and Army.
    Automatic Rifles are extensive use by MP, LE and Army. While Civilians or Militia somewhat restricted or limit use.
    Sub-Machine Gun, while outdated by frontlines units they quite useful for CQC or self defence. Mainly equipped for MP, LE, 2nd Line forces, and some Militia units.
    Shotguns, still quite popular from civilians to Army. From sporting shooters to Multi-role CQC. The Double barrel shotgun in this gameplay, actually they're sporting or hunting shotgun. Some marines bring it because its reliability and a attempt daring challenge. And the M37A2, judging it's design it was a attempt for civilian marketing but for some reasons it became quite popular for Marines despite it have other variants selections.
    Heavy weapons, well technically Only for Military purposes. (And despite their different roles, my prefered opinion was the Smart Guns)
