Periphery Workshop / Master Class 'Ragnarock'

- Matt Halpern and Mark Holcomb of Periphery met up at local Cajun restaurant in Pensacola, FL to play through some of the band's songs and discuss their approach to timing, counting off beats, and the secrets to making Peripheries polyrhythmic guitar riffs sound like the faceshredding ear-melting metal that they are. The members stated that they had never done a sit down clinic such as this and gave me permission to film their playthroughs. They sounded great for the stripped down rig with a single cab and an Axe FX II, Matt with a mapex bass, snare, and hats. Mark is an awesome guy and a solid guitarist. The event was organized by Raymond Rudy of www.easthillguitar.com/about-us/
"I WANNA PUNCH A BABY" LMAO 5:10
I still can't wrap my head around the syncopated chugging riff that's going on at 1:39-2:09
+booyahahaha its tricky!
+Gabriel Kwek it's not the rhythm though, i'm just wondering how he's playing it. is he filling in sixteenth notes with his left hand by slapping on the fretboard or is he actually picking all of them? i don't get it...
+Rubolf Guitar yeah he's just picking everything, he's doing mutes between notes with his left hand though
Gabriel Kwek you gotta memorize it, or have written it. Only two ways
It's 2019 and I'm still having a hard time figuring it out hahaha
Excellent video to appreciate the brilliant snare placement Matt does, I found this to be the key of that grooooovy character this band has.
i think its great that he played on the minimalist kit to be honest, from a drummers point of view its really interesting to see how he makes it work with just the snare high hat and bass. woot woot.
i like how he use a 3 piece drumset and be badass anyway
Two pieces actually. Which is even more crazy ha. Kick and snare hi hats don't usually count as apart of the kit
This stripped-down, unplugged live sound sounds ABSURDLY excellent! Wow! I know I can do these covers without clicks and stripped down drums at open mics now...
talk about a minimalist drum set. Cool to see a periphery song so stripped down.
Ragnacock
Lol
Sweet reference to John Browne of the mighty, Monuments at the end their! Didn't realise Mraky got some rhythm chops from Browne, that's awesome!
It was worth every cent
without click.. that's what makes you an amazing musician !
I talked to John Browne once, and I told him that he and Mark are my favourite prog/djent guitarists and he said that mark influenced his playing in some ways, and its funny because at the end u can hear that mark said he learnt something from john browne its soo cool
Get Lucky at 4:00
dang dude...you cut too soon. Do you remember what Mark said about the "John Browne technique?" ...thanks for sharing tho...that was sweet.
T.J. Jones What did he say?
They song is originally meant to be played on a 7 string. Alot of people here complaining thats its not on an 8 string.
I like how they pan out of Matt during once his most impressive grooves @ 1:38
Seriously wish you kept recording so I could hear about the chika-waka thing john browne does
Ragnarok* Haha. They sound so good for having such a small set up, especially Matt!
yes
dayumm!
Please upload it.
I completely regret not going to this! I just had no money!
I'm pretty sure he was talking about an 8-string. But for the time signatures, it's really just all the polyrhythmns that Matt uses
Ever been sitting at home in Pensacola, FL, chilling, looking up old Periphery/Matt Halpern vids to stumble across one of them playing in a restuarant in Pensacola, FL?! Seriously, what the actual fuck.. I need knowledge of these types of things. -.-
Haha, too funny, you never know, Sometimes cool shit happens around pensacola.
0 dislikes! YES!
you had to say something
1:30 I FEEL.... THE PRESENCE OF INSANITY!
his top strap button is coming unscrewed and its bothering me!
how the fuck did i miss this?!?
He is
The tuned of guitar is the droptuned of axe fx ii (pitch glide...pitch shifted)
Gaetano Soricaro No it isn't. The actual guitar is tuned f# d# g# c# f# a# d# or 7 string drop g# with a low f#
+Jimmy Silvers you're a little off eboo
Think of it this way it's drop c standard with the 7th string dropped to f# to accommodate the f# on the 5th string
Pulling that straight from the tabs I downloaded from their website
Roland Chauvin From who's website?
I know this is old but just in case you were still wondering, the tuning for this is exactly what Jimmy said. If you doubt, just play along to the last part (it's easy if you watch Mark's fingers) and use your ear lol
Yeah I know, wasn't me. But can't blame the guy for having a good time. It was an exciting day at this little cajun restaurant
that's what I said!
HOW DID YOU KNOW THE SECRET!! WERE YOU HERE!
I can post that part if you want
That's cause he plays on the 7 string but with the 7th dropped to G instead of H or A so basically 8 string would be corret in this case :)
matt's back with mapex?
Matt Plays Yamaha I believe
Aw look at the lonely Line 6 amp XD
Mraky!
live to keep tempo for the backing tracks to be in sync.
WOW lml
lol youre right good point
I mean, all their songs CAN be played on 8s, because an 8 is a 7 with an extra string. ;)
TheGrundigg can you teach me how to play in H?
i wanna 2
he says he likes to use lots of ghosts notes to keep things interesting
sounds like it, most of their songs sound like odd time signatures but as they explained they really aren't
please!!!! lol
why i focused on mark lol
rok...
I think the only song off the new album that requires an 8 is Ji.
That was weird why does matt switch from open handed to normal lol.
Not sure, think thats just what he used at this shindig
Technically its a 2 piece!
It's drop G# tuning, then they drop the G# down to an F#.
I know what it is... Someone said No clicks Necessary, Evidently they deleted their comment.
Lol s .. Even with a few instruments they sound good
Couldn't he just leave the camera alone? Daaaaamnit! -.-
it's a damn shame he had to play this stripped down kit
I thought this song was played with a 8 strings no?
Nope, they dont use 8 strings for any of their songs, they're all done on 7 stringers
94Raht49 aside from Ji, of course.
You sure thats 8? Sounds like drop A on a 7 string
I know its playable on a 7, but the lowest tuning of this song is a F# at least in the CD it is.
and most of other 7's song are in A flat or G i think.
so not sure how they manage this, must have been on a different tuned 7 string.
They normally use a drop Ab tuning for seven strings, but for this they drop the low Ab string to a Gb so that the open Gb string's octave is located at fret 3 on the Eb string. For reference, I'm pretty sure all of their six string songs are in drop C and on JI the 8 string was in a standard Tuning (F#, B, E, A, D, G, B, E)
he's actually playing out of that little amp
lol no theres a 4x12 and an axe-fx behind him
u didnt get the joke luke
;( im sad
Seeing Mark before his PRS makes me feel uncomfortable
Its a 7 string guitar count...
12:31 What's he doing jeez
*RAGNAROK
It's actually not bad at all. Now if I went to a 9 or 10 I'd probably feel half-retarded though
if it wasnt for misha, this how periphery would sound like
its too much
lol
mak tattle
No clicks necessary? I don't understand why you would need clicks if your drummer is present?
thats not that that means lmao
but a massive DICK!
