- Mark Holcomb of Periphery & Haunted Shores answering questions from the audience playing through Scarlet from the album Periphery II: This Time It's Personal.
This is the one of several videos we shot during the clinic Mark was gracious enough to do at our store on Saturday the 24th of October 2015. He did an excellent job showcasing his amazing PRS guitars signature model and was extremely informative regarding the methodology behind his playing.
We recorded the direct output of the mixer, so unfortunately I couldn't change the volume of the AxeFX versus the backing but the mix isn't too bad. Please subscribe to our channel and check out the other few videos from this clinic + more guitar videos.

I really appreciate the way you guys make these videos, switching between the room audio for the questions which is extremely clear and then switching to the guitar audio so all we hear is that. That's how these kind of videos should be made, thank you!
+Agustin Torres i agree with ya!! This is a perfect way for us to understand how they think! ;)
+Agustin Torres You're very welcome, we love making them when we can - so hopefully there are many more like this to come!
Agreed, they did a fantastic job with this!
***** all the credit goes to you here, it was one of the best in-store events I've ever been a part of.
That 'verse' riff is probably the most complete guitar riff i've ever heard. Fucking incredible musicianship.
I freaked out when he played Epic Fail at 7:31; such a boss!
Epic Fail? More like Epic Win!!!
Same, beyond awesome!
I'd love to get into this guy's head and figure out how he comes up with these riffs and gets them to flow together so well.
Broke chords?
"i try not to focus on big chords with a 7 string" that's very interesting, i use my 7 pretty much exclusively for the massive chord voicings it can offer you.
I think it's because of the potential to lose note definition, especially when you're playing with two other guitarists :')
I dont listen to Periphery, but I really respect Mark and what hes doing. Not to mention he seems like an incredibly down to earth and genuinely nice guy. And am I the only one who thinks he looks like Brandon Boyd?
Cool video, Mark seems like a very approachable, down to earth, cool guy. Enjoyed... thx
He's all that and more. At the Salt Lake City show he let me play his prototype PRS 8-string. All the Periphery guys were crazy cool to hang with, but Mark was incredible to literally everyone there.
Favorite guitar player right there.
Such a cool guy!
Not a doubt man!
This dude is unbelievable, so bummed I missed this in-store. thanks for the vids though,
If you like the sound of Open CmajAdd9 or CminAdd9, check out Opeth's Ghost Reveries which was one of the first metal bands to use a similar tunning (in D).
+Bringthecowpants Right!! I thought when he played a few progressions it sounded really similar to something I've heard before!! Thanks :)
@@thtr1310 Yes! The riff he plays after he tunes down to CminAdd9 sounds a bit like Wreath, which I know is from Deliverance, but it still has that vibe to it.
Yeah 100% Opeth as fuck - immediately got The Drapery Falls vibes from that tuning.
Mark seems like an awesome dude and would be great to have any type of conversation with!
Edit: Just got to the scarlet playthrough and Holy shit is he on point. what a class act
I'm not even a guitarist but I want that guitar so bad
11:11 Scarlet 🤟🏻
no one will thumbs down mark holcomb!
I never thought that i'll be here when i was listening to Linkin Park when i was 11 :)
Same man, same

Probably the prettiest tuning there is
That first clean part he plays kinda sounds like Vectors from Vicera
It's actually called epic fail, and Misha wrote that as Bulb! It's such a beautiful song.
+Lorance Smith which turned into vectors.
+Magmoormaster no
At 3:41 his strings sound like they're on the frets , is playing with his action super close ?
+boostuse yeah, i guess so.
They all play with low action, it just sounds spankier and brighter.
His pickups are very high and his string are very low.
Ok wait what, his signature goes 7 strings as well?!
Or is it like only for him and we're supposed to stare and cry? :(
+Elad Meyuhas Its sadly not a production model, hopefully it does though
You know whats funny, the fact I can get all the riffs and the solo down... But the rhythm section in the verse always fucks me up :') Anyone else find that?
thats djent for you lol
thats djent for you lol
Yeah, because there are 3 guitarists playing. So you would have trouble dissecting those sections and figuring out who's paying this and who's playing that. Plus, Mark's style of playing is a little intricate and he's using the open Cadd9 tuning. I also find it easier to get a hold of solos and main riffs. I prefer Jake's parts.

Just to clarify - I mean the rhythmn guitar itself dude. Not the rhythmn by way of a description.
I have already tracked the entire song with all the guitars as a test demo for my playing but for some reason I just cant get the verses second part/ prechorus into my head and I just end up making it up subconsciously. (Its chords changes, where the screaming starts.)
The changes dont correspond with bars or the steretypical positions of changes. (as to be expected) but its almost like the rhymn guitar is being played 1/2 a bar out from the song intentionally. I dont know how else to describe it. and the crazy thing is its the simpliest part of the whole damn song haha
ofc being in Cadd9 makes no difference to this power chord section based chug part thats underneath the lead nothing is being played above 4th string :)
Tbh though its not a song I could have worked out from scratch. I did tab the lead in the prechorus at the time when it wasnt on the online version and chucked it up for people to fix. But there was no way in hell Id have worked the main riffs out tbh.
Right, right. That's a long description. I could only play the intro on standard tuning. The right, I still need the open tuning for better accuracy.
Does anyone know if there's a transcribed version for scarlet tab in Drop C? I have a floyd rose schecter so I can't really change a lot in tuning without changing strings
No man, I tried and its REALLY hard to transpose it because he uses open strings a lot. You should use another guitar.
hahah, I've already done that! You can check my chanel for the video cover if you're interested =)
Shit man, dope.
If Gregg Popovich was a guitarist, he'd be Paul Reed Smith
the riff in cminadd9 is opeth?
Norway Jose by Haunted Shores.
Can anyone tell what he's playing through?
He's using his AxeFX II, and what you're hearing is the direct output of that with his backing tracks. We had some Yamaha active P.A. speakers also in use, which you can see behind him - but they were only for the crowd to hear.
This one is definitely on the "learn to play" list lol
whats the tuning? :D
+itsvoogle open cadd9

Thank you so much :P
Punished Venom Snake""fuckdat" tunning
