    I find doing a palm muted 12th fret power chord instead of open (in dropped tunings) gives the biggest clipping and chunkiest bass response, so I usually use that for setting my input levels properly.

      @@mrbungle3310 Honestly you can get amazing sound for nearly nothing. Spend $100 on an interface, spend $100 more on any of the neural dsp plugins and you're good to go. Ola Englund recorded his Master of the Universe album using only either the nameless or the NTS plugin, can't remember which, and it sounds absolutely sick.

      Not true at all.

      Pod Farm 2: $100
      Line 6 UX1 Interface: $80
      Rhythm Rascal: $30

Also i must say that your talent is apparent from how easily you pulled of those double tracks with perfection. People take note, you cant polish a turd if the performance isn't up to scratch, no amount of gear will help you there.

    all jokes aside, this is great advice for those starting with home recording guitars. Never really did any quad tracking. It always seems like way too much guitar but then again most of my music uses keyboards as well which take up a lot of space in the mix. Might give it another shot though

    • @elliottm1234

      It's most likely as he's demoing/reviewing that piece of equipment. In other videos you can see he's got much fancier interfaces. Hey Misha, very nice video, I found it extremely helpful! I still have a hard time making a good source tone (I use POD HD). Do you have any general outlines, fx. always using two compressors, and a screamer, dual amps on low gain or anything like that? Or is it just a matter of trying out stuff? For me that could seem like a long process, given the amount of amps, mics and effects. Would be super cool getting some tips on making amazing tones :) Thanks again! Can't wait for PIII!

    What i personally do for double tracking is i record the first guitar track on one track, copy and paste it to a second track where i put a delay plugin 100% wet, feedback at 0, and delay time usually between 7 and 24ms.
    The first track is fully panned to the left and obviously the second one fully to the right. I slightly increase the volume of the right channel in order to match the same perceived level as the left channel. (only the right channel has delay, the left one stays fully dry without any plugin on it.)
    I use this trick on all of my productions since 2 years and i find it really handy when you don't want to mess up too much time re-recording the same track.
    I may be wrong but it sounds great to me !

      Misha Mansoor What do you think ?

    • @supershred
      @supershred 10 років тому +2

      Dorian CIET More work than what it's worth.
      You're making your computer run an unneccessary plug in whereas you could, and should, just re-track another playthrough. It should take seconds to re-track another playthrough. It just seems really unneccessary unless the musician is severely lacking and seriously cannot lay another track within 5 minutes.
      PLUS what you want is the DIFFERENCE in the attack which creates the wideness,
      you may be playing a large chord and in the first track your bass strings are taking a lot of space, but your second track with emphasis on the high strings will bring clarity and definition to the chord, so when played together you get the nice clear, defined, chord you want. If you missed any articulation in the first track, the second track should catch it and beef it up.
      It's hard to tell with super clean players like Misha since he's solid on all these playthroughs, but IF there were any inconsistencies in the articulation of the segment, the double tracking would make them invisible.
      Quad tracking is the way to go though. 4 separate playthroughs.

      Yeah but my question is, with this variety of music, what is the point of a bass when your guitar is that extended in range? using an extended range guitar, which he's doing, defies this statement. from my ears, the bass here just adds a tonal quality, not much if any low end.

      It's called an actual guitar

      @elasdickband027 10 років тому +21

      HammerDimension I apologise, my comment might have looked genuine to somebody who hasn't seen Steve Terreberry's "how to be djent".
      And even so, it's no more of an actual guitar than any 7 or 8 string guitar. By your logic, the only true guitar is the original form, which only had one string.

    • @True_Necroholic
      @True_Necroholic 10 років тому

      No, by my logic a guitar has 6 strings, that is what a normal guitar has and so what I'm referring to as an "actual" guitar, and I'm simply making fun of extended range guitars since they have exploded in popularity in the last few years even though they are largely unnecessary (in the sense that most people aren't really utilizing them fully). Just poking fun though, I'm not against them.
      Also I've never heard of a guitar having only 1 string at any point. The original "guitar" had multiple strings. Perhaps you are thinking of some older chordophone that predates the guitar.

    • @kevinskater13

      ***** The scale length for extended range guitars is larger due to the fact that regular 6 strings cannot produce the proper frequencies extended ranges can. So just drop tuning a 6 does not work, if you are going to talk in a technical aspect.

    • @MFKitten
      @MFKitten 10 років тому +36

      Be aware though: quad tracking is way more sensitive to sloppy playing. You have to be tighter when quad tracking, or else it all just clouds together. The result, however, is HUGE.

    • @NunoLuna
      @NunoLuna 10 років тому +5

      I was definitely aware. Just tried it last night and its much more of a banger, you need to perform your tracks identical to the last. That's the only way it will work. Time consuming, but damn it's a nice outcome

    • @callmesleeper
      @callmesleeper 10 років тому +9

      *****
      Or you could try what I do (of course depending on what sound you want)
      70% pan, left and 70% pan right and a third monotrack with a spatial stereo effect plugin. :)

    • @ctsaustin
      @ctsaustin 10 років тому +4

      ***** the first two hard pan L and R. For the 3rd and 4th, Pan around 70-75 L and R. Should create some good stereo spacing without being too centered.

      @m2350 10 років тому +2

    Hi, I see that you plugged 2 cables from your AXE FX to your interface but when you record shows only one channel, how does that work?, why 2 cables and not just 1?

    • @gavinparkes2846

    • @yellowdudewithedibleshorts
      @yellowdudewithedibleshorts 3 роки тому

      The Axe FX has stereo FX, (modulations, reverbs and delays). He's no using any FX, so he's just tracking one of the inputs. That's why you only see one track being recorded in Cubase

    Cool video and good tips Misha. Just a tip though... you are recording at 24 bit and not 16 bit. So you have huge headroom and don't need to record super-hot and almost clipping to get a good signal-to-noise ratio (this is an old method from the 16bit era).
    In fact, it's often better to record at more relaxed levels for good gain structure in your mix, especially since you are quad tracking and will probably turn down the faders on the guitars quite a bit anyway. Cheers

    • @stormyandcold
      @stormyandcold 10 років тому +3

      The previous suggestions are all software vst plugins apart from Digitech GNX which is an external fx box. Guitar Rig 5 and Amplitube 3 are really good starting points if you're a beginner. The main battles you will come across is the quality of D.I. and guitar you have. Use a weak D.I. and cheapo guitar and these vsts will sound thin and poor. On the otherhand with a decent D.I. and quality guitar most people couldn't tell it's not a real amp. There is quite a lot of difference imho between using quality gear aswell like RME babyface vs Digidesign 003R via PRS S2 guitar. The 003R instrument D.I. makes all vst virtual amps sound awesome while Babyface is only adequate in comparison.
