This was me literally every time the drummer took a solo in a fusion band I used to play bass for. I just hoped the guitarist followed and we all came in at the same time. I also called that "guessing".
This is a really cool exercise. I would actually find it easier to keep my groove when the drummer plays something crazy wrong. It'd be MUCH tougher to lay off some of those cool Stuart Copeland off beats!
I would argue that Cory was correct in following the tempo. Petar was changing rhythm and time signature to try and mess with him, but tempo shouldn’t count because it inherently affects the time between notes. If Petar sped up and Cory didn’t follow, then suddenly Cory would be the one playing a different rhythm, not Petar!
It’s like a drawn out argument with my wife those moments where we sync up are made all the more special and fantastic by the long periods confusion and struggle
I know the bass player is playing something incredibly simple here, but staying in time playing something that slow with the beat shifting that much is incredibly difficult. Bass player deserves more credit :D
Man, this drummer is an amazing master at highlighting the syllables of the other instrument (in this case the bass). It really brings the magic out of the music, for every section of that overly simplistic bass line he was able to really compliment it and make it a worthy sounding lick with the utilization of so many different variations. His tempo, speed, syncopation, colorful highlights and just his overall fitting of the drums around the sound is impeccable. Also, even though the bass line wasn't that great I am impressed with the bass guy able to keep almost perfect timing, he did go slightly off sometimes but that is to be expected with such dramatic changes in tempo/speed etc... Very impressive matey!
I played in a band that routinely tried to pull out the rug from each other while we were rehearsing. I'm releasing the first of four albums has fall and a lot of the songs have the exact rug pulls and recoveries recorded but actually turned out fine. It's from my band in the seventies. I wrote about 80 songs and so far have been able to remaster about four albums worth out of the recording sessions at bars parties and in the basement. Things very similar to what you're talking about here. Guitar not coming in on his part then you look over and he's just laughing at you.. then he comes in. I think it made me a better drummer because I'm more reactive to situations someone plays out of time Etc. Their songs when the bass player starts really fast and I have to try to figure out how to slow everything down without making it obvious. That's always a fun one. Then there's the givebacks or the telegraph what you're doing very clearly. All in good fun!
@@porter2024 the 1st album is called, "Rock Remains Supreme ". I am on a mission to save Rock'nRoll ! The recordings are from the "Beer Sucking Dog" sessions in the mid to late 70s and early 80s. I wrote the songs in 1969-1979 but most of them 1969-1975. i didn't release them for many reasons. the main one being I didn't know the biz and figured I'd lose the rights to some scheister music exec. I didn't want to end up like Fogarty or Pat Travers who couldn't even play their own music. so, I just kept playing and writing music. it took a long time to find players who didn't want to just play covers, so, just to keep playing (drums/vocals) I played in cover bands . big waste of time . I figured I could try to get them to play original music but as it turned out I would meet 2 guys who actually wanted to work on my stuff. So, we formed a 3-piece power trio & the party started! So, we just started recording everything and it kept developing into a unique sound everyone knew. Skip fwd to today I learned a lot, the internet etc... everyone loves classic & hard rock but it's all overplayed. I have 4+ albums that should have been released back in the day and who knows? I could have gotten lucky but odds were not good. But, I do have classic rock from the day and everyone who has heard it says it sounds like something they've hear but it's not. So, I'm gonna release some "new old" classic hard rock. Much more to the story. did you see the song link?
This reminds me of sessions I’ve engineered with Vinnie Colaiuta and Jimmy Haslip. 😂. Poor Jimmy would have to hold it down while Vinnie would do his thing. Jimmy was a rock though, never wavered. I remember Vinnie did a solo on Michael Frank’s “Remembering Take 5” where he super imposed a 4/4 rock groove onto the triplets, using his floor Tom as the kick and snare for back beat, while maintaining the standard take 5 kick/snare pattern (in 5/4) with his feet (kick and hihat pedal). So the Tom/snare rock groove would cycle every 8 triplets (cuz it was in 4/4) while the bars would cycle every 15 triplets (5/4 triplets). Vinnie kept the pattern going and going until the rock groove eventually cycled around and landed on the 1 of a 5/4 bar… but while he was doing it everyone except him and Jimmy completely lost where the beats where and where the original 5/4 pattern was. It was one of those 😱😱😱 moments… sadly that solo didn’t make it on the record. 😥. They felt it was too “out” for the MicGael Franks audience. 😔
@@flyingsteaks …you can hear the song. It’s called “Hearing Take Five” on Michael Franks’ “Rendezvous in Rio” album. When I tracked it, it was called “Remembering Take Five”. He must have changed the name. I wish I was allowed to save that pro tools session. It was epic.
Playing a lot of sub-divisions that align with the bass notes makes this a bit easier, in my experience. I think it's harder when there is a lot of syncopation or polyrhythmic stuff with a lot of space. When I played jazz, I lost the form on drum solos a lot. Focus is important. They did a great job here!
Loved the interplay between both drummer and bass player...no matter what the drummer threw at the bass player ...they were both spot on ....maybe a poyrhythmic of 3/4 and 4/4 combination might of set off the bass player ...worth a try ...great fun
Coming from a jazz background helps you know that the roles in the rhythm section are CLEARLY defined: -Bass controls the TEMPO -Drums control the STYLE
The control to not over play and give into the 16ths is incredible. Putting that much space in the groove is so hard.
I know right? Seeing this video, I knew myself would fall into temptation and mess everything up
The drummer's equivalent of "intrusive thoughts" is trying to NOT to overplay lol
Did you watch? Im deaf from 1st sec👎🙉🤦😡💩🤮
Thank you for giving me this wisdom today
Moral of the story, Cory is an excellent babysitter of the groove.
You can't hold no groove if you aint got no pocket.
Really sweet drumming. Shows how can musically manipulate time when you have a bass player who can consistently provide a pulse.
The drummer does this to me all the time, but not on purpose.
😂
And long as you can still follow
you can have a daw in your phone in 2023 but people still can't use a simple metronome
hahahahaha
Cory leveraging extensive "finish an email on his phone while multiple kids are hanging off his limbs" experience here.
Haha!! Brilliant comment.
😅
I had no idea this drummer was this good. Wow.
petar is crazy nice. he just has the discipline to not overplay
Victor Wooten was very complimentary of Petar on the shared tour.
I wish I had his discipline@@efafe4972
He didn’t seem to keep time very well…😂
That was the point lol. To try and throw cory off but he didn't@@symetryrtemys2101

"We all came at the same time"
At this point its on feeling lol
@@thesolersystemofgames841 "we all came in at the same time. 'at the same time' is the nickname of our sound guy"
Love this. It really showcases how a change in the drums can make the whole thing have motion even with a steady bassline.
Keeps going even when his cymbal stand fails. What a pro
Why would you stop?
I agree but at the same time it’s not like he had the one cymbal
I am a bass player, and my brain just broke.
I’m a drummer and MY brain just broke!!😅😅
@musicman2705 that doesnt say much
U guys are using brain!?

I think he got you a couple of times... when he locked in with you then sped the tempo you followed a little
Yeah that so sneaky of Petar, I don't how Cory managed that so well haha

As a drummer and bassist, this might be my favorite video in existence
Ok, this grooved so hard i had a stank face almost the entire time
As a musician, this is both amazing and hilarious 😂
In my mind, I imagined this a million times. This is better than I could've imagined. So amazing.
Petar isn't just a great drummer, he's a GREAT showman!!! 🙏
I don't know who I'm more impressed with, Petar or Cory 😍 We need more jam videos like this!

Best comment here.
It would be awesome if Petar's drum track is accessible then we could try it and make a fool out of ourselves
It's always completely inspiring for me to hear this chemistry.
The brilliance of Petar Janjic exemplified.
Cory and Petar are two of my favorite people period.
This was awesome!!!!!! I'm a drummer. Who's this drummer. Bass player internal time and focus was absolutely fantastic.

Fun to sing along Corys bass. The triplets got me!
... but he didn't succeed, right 😂😂😂 ? Nice to see you both sharing the pleasure of playing together 🎸🥁🤩 !!! 🙏🏻☮
This is just pure musical joy. Time can be divided in oh so many ways.
1:45 Jesus, that's where I would ultimatively be lost...
Internal time is so important! Two absolute legends.
Also, Cory, that is a DOPE Gaucho shirt. Where’d you get it?
I’m seconding this question and also hazarding a guess that it was Double Wonderful
Petar is an absolute treasure and should be guarded at all costs.
even the cymbal couldn’t handle it

Brilliant! I used to do it all the time with my drummers....golden late 90s fusion times, haha. Btw excellent musicianship & sense o humour.
Standard day in the modern jazz world
Never seen anything like this. Delicious.
Over here on my couch eating a bowl of pasta, reacting more audibly than I would any tv show or movie lmao
Is there a genre of music like this? This gets me hyped! Steady groove with creative drumming. Is that drum and bass?
Cory "The Human Metronome" Wong!
Well done!
I loved it!
We all live for when the groove comes home at 1:16
Maybe you should play for living, you’re good 🤣 Thanks guys, a really fun one 🙏
Petar threw some tough chipotles at you! Well done Cory!
Oh I love this game. In school we called it "F*ck your couch"
Its like watching two talented siblings who are constantly trying to mess with the other / screw up their jam
just being a left handed drummer is enough lol
This makes me so anxious listening to it. I’m cringing and laughing at the same time.
This was fun to watch! Nice polies and displacing!
I can 'nervous tick'/'hiccup' to it Bob, I give it A TEN!
OMG the poly rhythm at 1:08!
I like how the symbols have French bread on them.
53 seconds: The cymbal was so impressed with the pocket that it fainted.
Genuinely enjoyed this jam. The rhythm play was immaculate.
I dont see a bassist; i just see two drummers.
Threw off that cymbal pretty well.
Reminded me of "Indiscipline" by King Crimson, haha. Great stuff
insanely good drummer
This was way funnier than I expected, great job!
this made me feel really good . because . it sounds like they are married the drummer so cheeky haha i love it xD
Be sure to check out the Chris Dave trio playing criss cross live with Foley on bass if you like things like this
If I had to play any more than those simple few notes, I woulda been all over the place!!
as far as i'm concerned this is every drummer ever
OH! He broke me at 01:09 !!!!

good god...
As a bassist who plays with a drummer who can't just fucking chill.
I feel this in my soul.
Beautiful study in multi rhythm.
That drum sound mix is so good - any way you guys can share the approach to get the kit to sound like that?
more overhead mics

Those cloth like bags (mutes?) on the cymbals, what are those called, and where can I buy some? The cymbals sound so tight.
Idk why I laughed so hard when the cymbal stand gave way but i did
Everyone's gangsta til the drummer put one time-signature on top of another
Also diggin' the banana sacks on em pies
This bends my mind in all the right ways. Is there a genre for this?
Good thing you guys were wearing protective glasses, that sharp playing was flying everywhere, could have gotten in your eye. Safety first!
whats hilarious is that this is 1000x times more difficult and interesting than anything that plays on radio and people consider "music"
