Periphery's MATT HALPERN plays 'CAFO' by Animals as Leaders

- On Matt's youtube channel, he uploaded a video called "AAL Practice Runs" and during the video he plays Thoroughly at Home ( • Periphery's MATT HALPE... ) and CAFO but you only hear his performance (no backing of the actual song), and i basically made this video because i wanted to watch him play it while the song actually played, and now im uploading it because it kicked even more ass than i expected.
So the video belongs to Matt Halpern, and the song belongs to Animals as Leaders (for all them copyright a-holes)
I also do not know where Halpern came from. I actually met him many years ago after a Coheed and Cambria concert in Richmond. Chris Adler (Lamb of God) was outside after the show and me and a few buddies were talking to him and he pointed over to Matt who was showing a few technical things to a couple of street drummers. Adler told us that Halpern was "way better than he (Adler) could ever dream of being". Naturally we went over and talked to him and he told us about the first Periphery album that was about to come out. Got our email addresses and sent us the album before it was ever released. Great guy and insanely talented drummer.
I get to meet the guys in April and I'm so excited but also nervous. I feel like my head will explode from being near so much talent.
Matt is from Bethesda, Maryland I thought
Thomas Blanche pretty sure Matt is the only one in periphery from the Bmore area. The rest of the periphery guys are in the dc area. Same with tosin and Javier, while garstka is from Massachusetts.

Andy Ham Spencer is from Bethesda, Matt from Baltimore, Jake, Mark, Misha where all from DC, but recently Mark and Misha moved to Texas
Imagine playing AAL songs with super simple set like that. This man is a monster

Why would anyone have doubts that it's Halpern. Not only is he good enough to play these songs, but he actually played drums for AAL when Tosin and Misha were working on the first AAL album in '09.

Very good drumming for just a 3 piece very impressive gets to show that you don't need a big kit to show technique I like it and who ever says different is ignorant dumb ass drinking a lot haterade

+Adrian Aguirre Misha did not compose this. This is Tosin Abasi's work.
+Phergan Tosin has previously stated that he and Misha were very collaborative on the first AAL record, and all drum programming was done by Misha. I think what our buddy Adrian meant here was props to Misha for coming with a majority of the drum ideas compositionally speaking.

That's the thing, mr Watson. It is a little bit too obvious, thus i think a more thorough investigation is required to please the general population of youtube. I also believe we have a murder on our hands.

I've never seen any old videos of Matt, or even knowing what he did before Periphery. Did he even exist? Or did they need a drummer and just spawn Matt?
He used to be the drummer for Animals As Leaders tho
And before AAL he used to play in a local pop band..crazy how he went to the top over the years.
So I've been listening to animals as leaders for years and Ive always thought the drumming was phenomenal. Without doing much research I was under the impression that gartska has always been their drummer. I eventually came to learn the first albums drums we're programed. I just recently heard of periphery with the hail Stan release. Needless to say I'm in love with the band. Come to find out Misha was involved with the creation of aal sound and seeing Matt here drumming this song just gives me even more love and respect for the band. Crazy talented guys. Keep up the stellar work.

travis barker is fucking GARBAGE compared to halpern.. get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.. barker is one of the most overrated drummers to ever become famous.
Travis is a really good writer and got in a band that has greater appeal to the public. Kinda like Ringo Starr. Just because they play something popular doesn't mean they don't deserve credit. Halpern gets to be a lot more creative in Periphery and deserves more recognition.

I greatly admire Matt. His minimalistic setup, his ability to play other band's music really well (he plays the shit out of some Dream Theater), his powerful yet relaxed approach... Great stuff.
I can tell this is indeed matt just by the way he plays, his way of druming is very unique and recognisable

Would love to see Halpern kill it live with AAL for at least one show. I wonder how they're chemistry was back then, and how different they would sound with Halpern's groove and feel behind the music.

if you guys don't know Matt Halpern actually played drums for the AAL back in 2009, Navene Koperweis was the new drummer and played with AAL around 2009-2012 when Matt Halpern was replaced, and after that Navene was replaced and Matt Garstka is now the new and present drummer of AAL
either way its pretty cool if someone from a band learns a fellow awesome band's songs for practice... respect to you

You can see that it's Matt by looking at his left arm. (His sleeve).
On AAL's first album it was mostly Tosin but Misha (from Periphery) was also part of the writing process, as well as I believe producing the album.

He only uses a floor tom pretty often. In some videos, you'll find him using a 4-piece and some extra symbols, but for the most part it's just this 3-piece. Just the essentials. Really shows how little you need to sound amazing.

It's matt because if you bothered to watch matts other videos, you see he's in the same place with the same attire. Lack of hat and V-neck does cause some confusion however
The MASTER of less is more. The fill he does at 5:52 -6:02 is amazing. Top 3 drummers for me along with Tomas Haake and Danny Carey. Mr. Pringsheim, good job on the syncing of the audio/video. It's hard enough to catch god playing drums..

I think it's Matt because of the tattoo on his left forearm, and also because that's the pearl drum kit he used in a bunch of other videos he's posted.

Yeah, it's shocking sometimes when you see the size of someone's kit, I think it does make the sound more impressive.

The playing style is so much Matt Halpern wether its him or not.
The proof is in the player, its hard to replicate a drummers natural movements when playing, and thia guy looks (except face?) and plays like Matt. Plus some one pointed out his love handles

What's going on with the hi-hat? Seems like the clutch gave out before the song started and he just rolled with it. Very confused. It also seems like he wasn't counting with his left foot at any point in the song, which okay sure he keeps time in his head, but I mean in grooves that don't involve double kick, the left foot seems drastically neglected
