  • Episode 36 - Revs, blinds & pink hair
    After an amazing getaway at Boat Life Live, we return to our usual chaotic lifestyle, still stuck behind the Erewash winter closure. We finally add a splash of privacy to our home in the form of some shiny new blinds, and as you can probably guess, the installation isn't quite as straightforward as we'd hoped. We also uncover a minor problem with how we've been using our engine, but take a load off with a day trip to Sheffield 🏙️

    Ok guys. You have done good with the blinds. Use them with only the drop you need now. And in the years to come when that drop becomes ‘used’ you can cut it off and have a whole new blind to use 👍

    The alternator that is on your engine that charges the battery has a built in regulator that regulates the output to the battery's so it wont make any difference if your engine is on tick over or on Higher revs it will always put out the same voltage so you only need to have the engine on tick over. Adding revs will only use more fuel. Love the vlogs by the way :O)

      Ah good to know, thanks Kevin! 😊

    • @OtchBotch
      @OtchBotch 2 роки тому +2

      Actually this is only partly right the alternator does regulate the voltage to be the same at any rev of the engine but running the engine faster produces more current (Amps) which allow the battery to charge faster its not the voltage that matters but the current when charging. Higher revs does use more fuel but also produces more amps also most modern alternators although they are rated as eg 60 - 80 Amps alternators will only produce 25% of that amount due to the regulator restriction as more amps will increase the heat on the alternator and MAY reduce life expectancy however using an external regulator can increase amps and protect the alternator one like I have a Balmar regulator on my narrowboat it allows me to use 95% capacity of my alternator but monitors the output to the battery and reduces as the battery becomes fully charged and if the heat gets to much it reduces the output to cool the alternator The Balmar is programmable for different battery types like Lead Acid , AGM and Lithium

    Just think... the length of the blinds not only gives you options... but.... when they get sun scorched you can cut the bad parts off, shorten and add the bottom trim....??? You easily have 20 years of good blinds.. you'll never have to change them again.... plus... you gave us a really good laugh. Bravo.😅

    Most Betas have at least two alternators, one for charging the starting battery, the other for charging the domestic/leisure batteries.
    There are two battery lights on the engine control panel, one without a "D" (for the starting battery) and one with a "D" for the domestics.
    If the "D" battery light isn't lit on your engine control panel once the engine is running, then you know that the alternator is producing current and charging your batteries.
    If the "D" battery light remains lit once the engine is running, then there is a fault with the alternator, which could be as simple as s slipping drive belt.
    If the "D" battery light flickers, then by all means do try increasing the engine revs slightly until the flickering stops. A flickering light is usually a sign that the batteries are discharged very deeply and/or there is a high load on the domestic batteries, or again a slipping belt. If the flickering persists at higher revs (especially without the noise of a slipping belt) then there is a fault in the domestic alternator.

    The reason you need to rev the engine to 1,100/1,200 is to allow the alternator to achieve it's max charge rate at tick over 600 rpm the alternator is probably making less than 10 amps of the rated 80amp max output the voltage is set by the voltage regulator which should be a set value of 14.8v max if the battery voltage is less than 14.8v the batteries are probably still charging. But increasing the engine rpm from idle will increase the charging current and decrease the time you need to run the engine to achieve a full charge

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories 2 роки тому +2

      Exactly what John says. 👍
      To check your alternators are chucking out 14.4v use a multi meter.
      As for pre heating the glow plugs, Beta's are pretty hardy engines and don't necessarily need to have the fuel preheated when the weather's warmer.

    Hi you 2. The glow plugs pre heat the initial charge of fuel that's injected into the cylinders on start up. I cannot believe you were never told how to operate a diesel engine in the first place. Ever thought of investing in a small generator to save wear on your main engine. You should have a 230 volt mains input on the boat. Regards Dave desiel fitter

    • @BoatTime
      @BoatTime  2 роки тому

      Yep, it's one of the oddities of boating that you aren't required to learn anything in advance. We tried to do our research as best we could, but the 'heat' function slipped through the cracks. We've considered a small generator but not sure we'll need it thankfully! We're aware lots of people use them to avoid knackering the engine. Thanks for the tips, it's super helpful! 💕

  • @KeithBevan
    @KeithBevan 2 роки тому +5

    Hold the key to heat for about a 4 count when it's cold out. The glow plugs will warm the cylinders and make it easier on the starter. Can I suggest a hinge with a stick mounted to the underside of the engine cover to prop it up.

    • @BoatTime
      @BoatTime  2 роки тому

      Good to know thank you!
      & great idea! Our only worry is that if it pings off and hits the engine during a cruise it can cause some damage 😬 but deffo need to find a solution to just holding it up haha

    Wonderful vlog, as usual. Your personalities shine through always. Wes you have a great pouty face when things get hard. Something I'm just learning now is that I thought life was supposed to be easy and if it isn't, something's wrong. Found out that's actually not true. It doesn't all have to be hard, it's just that when it's easy, it's a bonus not necessarily normal. Life takes work.
    Amy, I absolutely understand about worrying that a tree will fall on your home. I live in a forest with 100ft tall trees in a permanent caravan with added on rooms and an extra roof over the top and when we have big storms or snow it's scary. Listening to the branches cracking and many trees coming down is wild. Have to keep myself from having a panic attack.
    Anyway, thanks for the fun video with the fur babies return. Take care and stay well.

      @@BoatTime , honestly guys, as a liveaboard myself I can really relate to the frustrating minor disasters you get, like the new toilet seat whose price amounts to literal daylight robbery, and that took six weeks to be transported to the boat on the back of a yak, and then it doesn't fit.
      I so know that feeling...
      But you two always manage to end up smiling, and I swear Wes could make an amusing comment in literally any situation, up to and including a nuclear attack.
      Episode 34 of 'Wes and Amy walk a long way for chips' was a nailbiter- a classic of the genre.
      I'm on the edge of my seat for episode 35.
      And weirdly, I was in Swanley Bridge marina for four months myself, and came out of there at the end of march 2021, then spent 6 months cruising the Llangollen, so its quite possible I passed you on there at some point.
      Anyway, I hope the channel gains more support very soon- you deserve it.

    I also learned on a FB group that on Betamarine it’s adviseable to run the engine at 1200 revs when not charging under load (i.e when not cruising) as otherwise you risk it ‘glazing the bores’ (whatever those are 😂, ok I vaguely get that it’s to do with build up on the cylinders that might affect combustion). If you read the Beta Marine manual a bit further it does explain that too, though I do also love smashing on with things without looking at the manual! 👍

    • @BoatTime
      @BoatTime  2 роки тому +1

      Ah yes we've seen the term 'glazing the bores' a lot too! Still absolutely no idea what it means, but it sounds bad so we'll avoid it 😅 We think some of the issue is our alternator and inverter setup, so without wanting to spoil future episodes that is hopefully sorted now, and charging around 1000-1200 revs seems to work okay. Thanks for the tip! ❤

    Some good advice about your alternator. But they get hot under high load. So like said they will charge at tickover but they can't cool themselves as well as they can at high revs( faster the fan, more air) most modern engine suggest 1200rpm for charging because of overheating at lower revs.
