in the mean time, until you get the stairs redone you could take the cupboard door off and put a pretty curtain or piece of fabric there with velcro.... in case you don't do the stairs for a while. Our caravan didn't have a toilet, too small, so we took the the door off our only tall cupboard and put in a cassette toilet, which I love, I didn't want to shrink the caravan more so we put up a cute, thin little curtain off temu and I leave it open and hooked back so it all feels roomier.

An old neighbour of my parents & I sold up & bought a barge, I won’t sugarcoat things, although I’m sure you’re already aware.. she found the winters so terribly brutal she very nearly sold up and got back onto land, she really struggled with the sheer cold for a good few years, but she stuck it out with her husband and they’re still going strong last I heard! I’m only telling you because I want you to be super prepared! Knit yourself lots of thick socks, don’t dismiss the use of coal, hot water bottles, etc, keep as warm as you can through the night as it’ll help you in the mornings too (no frozen pipes etc). You absolutely can do this! Don’t be anxious! Just be prepared and you’ll be fine! What a beautiful little place to live 🥰
I’m disabled (two chronic genetic disabilities), but before I was diagnosed and when I was in my late teens / early 20’s I went on several barge trips with my mum, who also adored them. I lost both my parents suddenly in the last 2 years, so barge’s bring me fond memories. I will gladly live vicariously through you! And I love that you’re making it your home too 💗 xxx

Congratulations on a great tour of your boat. I got my 20' Waterbugs Springer ten years ago and I've never regretted it. My layout and decor is the original so my Heads (toilet) is where you store your clothes. I also have a dilemma, when folk to to visit, should I dismantle my bed and have two sofas? I'm getting more lazy/anti-social and entertaining them on the aft deck!
A couple of points, if you'll forgive me ... don't block or cover up the vents on your roof. Waterbugs are well designed to avoid a build up of condensation but that means those vents need to be clear.
The original cupboard doors (on all the Water bugs I've seen) have simple sliding doors. Runners are easy to fit and obviate the need to replace those hinged doors (just recycle them)!
I'd give serious thoughts to how dangerous it might be if you remove the steps and replace them with a ladder, particularly when you're cruising in bad weather. Those steps are dangerous enough as they are, ladders can be lethal.
I hope you get as much pleasure out of your Waterbugs as I have. I look forward to seeing more videos of your life on the Cut. Namaste 🙏

I love your little boat, I'm very jealous. I've lived on a Dutch barge and I'm currently in a van. A fridge that runs on gas is a good idea, they are very power hungy, and some solar is a great idea to charge your leisure batteries when the time comes. For the time being, if money allows for a bit of power you could always get yourself a power station, i have a small power oak, great for charging any electrical bits you have, electric toothbrush or shaver and fab for rechargeable batteries, i have fairy lights and battery operated puck lights, and it saves on your leisure battery, charged by either solar or the cigarette point if you drive, I charge mine when I'm driving, you can always charge it at friends and family too if you have that option and they dont mind.
I miss the moor hens. They're a great early morning wake up call lol, i love nature, but the poop can be messy when they come on board, i ended up with one of the chicks indoors and needing a rescue bless it, all was fine though, mum alerted me to the situation and after baby was back with her, she had words with it lol.

Great tour of this lovely tiny houseboat. The next video could be you telling us the plans for the boat 🙂
I suggest sliding doors for the cupboard or hinges on the ladder so you can swing it up and lock it.
The wood/coal stove takes up way too much space (all year round) you already have a gas system on board, so a small gas stove would free up a lot of space that could be another closet.
LED lamps for lower power consumption... i know everything costs 🙂I'm looking forward to see what you are going to do with it!

You could have that small steps on a heavy duty hinge, that way you could lift the steps up into door area and if you place an large eye attachment on the steps then have the hook in the doorway (attached with another looped eye so it is attached to allow movement), you could simply slot the hook into the eye to hold it up out of the way! Not only freeing up the space to allow you to open the cupboard, but also giving easy access to space under stairs!

You could do it in an afternoon!!

The curtain idea is a practical solution. Also the van life fridge suggested in another comment. A gas fridge is another idea. They don’t cost a fortune to run, but can be a bit pricey to buy initially. The happiest years of my life were spent living aboard, and I would still be doing that if not for mobility problems that came along with arthritis. Take the rough with the smooth and treat it all as an adventure and you’ll never be bored or unhappy in your beautiful tiny water-bound home. I’d wish you good luck, but I don’t think you’ll need it. Lovely wee boat. You probably mean a separator loo when you say compost, unless you really are going to be able to compost the solids a Thetford Porta Potti is far less hassle, you just empty the lot into the Elsan at the marina or on your travels which you'll have to do with the liquid with your separator loo anyway. CRT don't like people putting bags of poo in their bins & your marina won't either. If you have mains hook up I'd make use of it, unless you're using electricity for heating you'll use very little & it doesn't really make sense to deny yourself as much comfort/convenience as you can get living in such a small space. Small Alpicool compressor coolboxes are good value and about as efficient as it gets with battery power consumption but as you've discovered fridges are hungry for power, with more solar and switching it off at night you might be ok in spring & autumn, winter no. You're wise to see how you go with everything as it is before making drastic changes, wouldn't do anything too drastic until you've done a winter aboard & the best of luck with it all. BTW you've got bow & stern right, left side as you're facing forward is port, right starboard, what you called your gear lever is your throttle and you have a 9.9 horsepower Honda outboard engine - good engine! And take that tarpaulin off the roof you don't need it!
