    We return to a fairly mundane week aboard Gregory's Girl, including shopping, relaxing at the weekend, and having friends and family over to visit. As we tentatively creep into spring, we find several things on the boat that have given out after the wear and tear of winter, but console ourselves with a hefty stack of pancakes! 🥞🍁

    Hi Amy and Wes. Firstly it’s always great to catch up with friends. Great that you had a lovely day out. I definitely prefer the crepe style pancake to fluffy ones. Lemon and sugar is my favourite topping. Sorry that things keep breaking, but unfortunately that seems to happen whether you are on a boat or on land 😄. Interesting that you’re planning on updating your charging system. That should give you some peace of mind as to your battery situation and what you can run. Hope Rufus got his teeth sorted. Have a great weekend.Take care. Nick

      Yes we love seeing friends! It can be quite rare sometimes out on the canals, so we've been making the most of it! A fellow crepe fan too, ey! That's more Amy's camp I think! Lemon and sugar is a classic! 😋 Yep, everything breaks all at once regardless of where you live! 😅 Upgrading the batteries should be a real game-changer, although struggling for 10 months has definitely taught us a lot too! We'll give Rufus a lil kiss from you! 💕 Thanks for watching as always Nick! x

    Poor Rufus wanted to join in the pancake eating. At least he got a smidge. I think the best pancakes are thin, not thick and doughy.

    Poor Rufus. Our Rescue Rosie had to have some teeth out too back in the day. She always had problems with her teeth, by the time we lost her when she was 15, she'd had a couple of vet visits for teeth out. I used to have to brush her teeth with ham flavour toothpaste lol she actually quite liked the stuff, but not me brushing them. But it's amazing how quick they get over having teeth out. They seem to heal really quickly!

      @BoatTime  2 роки тому

    The Lithium conversion will indeed be a game changer. It is a ton of of work and a ton of money but the benefits will be incredible. Battery relocation is the main pain as these must come inside the boat so they don’t fall below 0°C as you must not charge Lithium below this temperature. Some of these batteries even have heaters inside them to prevent this issue.

    • @BoatTime
      @BoatTime  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah we've been toying with the idea for some time, but as our electrics have been getting worse we figured it's worth biting the bullet and just going for the full upgrade. We've spoken to the electrician a lot about the battery setup, and we reckon the self-heating ones are the best bet for us 🥳

    • @metalsnapper6728
      @metalsnapper6728 2 роки тому +1

      @@BoatTime If you cant get the batteries in a sensible location inside the boat and keep the cabling runs as short as you can between the alternator, inverter and mains charger to the batteries, then maybe the self heating ones could be your best option. You’d still have your normal lead acid starting battery located in the engine bay and depending on which set up you’re having, this could also be used to keep the alternator from destroying itself when the BMS turns off accepting charge when the batteries are full so the alternator’s output (B+) cable still has a path to a battery. Lithium is brilliant, but installation and set up is vital as it needs a few devices to look after it.

    Another great and fun video guys, thanks!
    I cant believe you're finally going lithium. I got mine over a year ago and I love them, but bear in mind the batteries are only part of the overall setup you need.
    For example, to really get the most from them, you also want to be able to charge them with some decent current.
    You've probably heard that when charging lithiums, alternators give out high levels of current, because unlike lead acids the lithiums will offer no resistance to charging. Its great in one sense, because the lithiums will soak up every amp you give them (so you'll get more out of your solar panels btw)- but it also means there needs to be a way of limiting the alternator output so that it doesnt overheat.
    Many marine alternators are rated at say 100 amps, but that is with lead acid batteries, which start to resist the charging as their % state of charge increases. Many narrowboat alternators cant give out their full rated power for more than about 10 minutes without overheating, so you need to work out what your alternator can put out on a continuous basis, and still stay below 110 degrees or so.
    For example, when charging my lithiums, my 100 amp alternator had to be limited to putting out 45 amps, otherwise it got too hot.
    So you need to find out what your alternator is rated at, and assume at most that it will charge lithiums at about half the rated power.
    That can be a big limitation, because now you have these powerful batteries that are so easy to charge, but your alternator can only put out say 50 amps. In summer its not such a big deal because the solar should do most of the battery charging, but in winter you'll be using at least 100 amp hours a day and probably more, so that means your standard 100 amp alternator will be limited down to 50 amps, and at that rate it will take 2 hours of engine running each day to replace the power you've used.
    Some people use an alternator controller/regulator to limit their alternator down to a safe level. I think that is the best and most efficient way of doing it. Other people use battery to battery charging setups to control their alternator output, but they can be just as expensive, and are also wasteful of energy. I have a B2B setup, and although its ok, I would recommend the regulator method instead.
    If your chap is going down the regulator route, the mastervolt unit is probably the best on the market at the moment.
    It may even be that to improve your engine charging during the winter, you may want to upgrade the alternator to a more powerful unit that will safely put out a steady 100-120 amps, and thus get your daily charging done much quicker (saves on engine running time, and thus on diesel costs, plus fewer services are needed each year).
    Anyway, I've been working through all these issues over the last year, which is why I wanted to give you a few pointers on the issues I've run into,
    There are a few things you need to remember with lithium batteries- dont routinely charge them above 80% full, and dont let them get below 20% on a daily basis.
    You can do it occasionally, but if you cycle them between 10% and 95% every day you will shorten their lifespan from at least 10 years down to five or less.
    If you would like a chat about it all some time let me know, I'd be happy to talk at you for an hour or so about some of the things to keep an eye on.
    PS- I found Ed Shiers of Four Counties Marine absolutely invaluable in getting my system sorted, he is a genuine expert on lithium setups in narrowboats.
    Before you punt all your money, I would find out the details of what your installer is proposing, and run it past Ed Shiers. Not so much as a price match thing, but just to see if there might be a better way of doing it, bearing in mind your budget of course, which might be a factor in the system design decisions.
    These things cost so much money that you want to be sure you're opting for the right setup that will do a good job for the next 5-10 years.

    • @BoatTime

      We are so excited to get on the lithium train! We've really struggled with the power for the last 10 months, and can't wait to have plenty of power at our disposal. We've spoken to the electrician who has given us a bit of a rundown about charging the lithiums. We're going to opt for the batteries that self-regulate their temperature, then have some modifications to the alternator to kick out more amps, but with a similar controller to what you mentioned 🥳
      Thank you so much for the heads up, that's super useful and reassuring to know all of this, especially regarding regular discharges below 10% and above 80%. We'll keep that in mind so we can get the most out of them. We'll also keep Ed's name in mind too, always good to know more trustworthy people. Thank you for all the info! 💕💕

    Hi Amy, Wes, Ioved this week's Vlog. I also love the way you two are always so happy together, well maybe except for when Amy tried to close the hatch and it broke. It was brilliant the way Amy lost it, or but for a second only. Your Blinds look just the job and are really nice. Mmmm the pancakes looked so delish. Rufus and Rupey liked them too. Poor Rufus having to see the Vet, Animals know Vets are to be avoided, they just seem to understand the word Vet! Nice trips to Nottingham, been there once only, to the old Odeon before it closed. Your picture frame looked good hanging on a nail, as if it was designed that way. Really sorry that you then had a leaky window. I bet your excited about your new batteries. Would a Amazon Firestick be a good option for your TV viewing. It does have a mains plug, but I cant imagine it would use much power. Wishing the 4 of you have a great week. Take care.

    Great vlog as usual guys and really looking forward to the electric install!!!! - I think I've only mentioned it about 20 times!!
    Have you guys thought about doing a cost of living video on the boat? - I know a lot of living is depending on the person, such as shopping etc, but a breakdown of your monthly/yearly costs would be really interesting (to me at least).
    As I've mentioned, I will be changing my way of living (prob in a van) but really interested in the costs of alternative living as a boat would provide so much more room but I would believe the costs would be higher so would be interesting anyway :)

    "Everything is broken!" Sums up thuis episode in Amy's moment of despair.
    In the Netherlands we have long pancakes tradition. Not sure if they would fit the crêpes category, but definitely not American style.
    You should definitely try "poffertjes" when you get a chance, especially if you manage to avond butter and powder sugar, aware sinners that you are ;-)
    My New tablet's text predictor is killing me, because I have not yet managed to switch it off! Hold on...yes, took me a bit more than a minute, and my text is still there (yay!).
    Do you know we actually have a pancake boat in Nijmegen? It is highly touristic, but an excellent opportunity to have a party with a group of people. Rest assured, it's not a narrowboat.
    Wes, I feel sorry for your Apple dilemma. Will you miss out on something by using a Chromecast hdmi dongle?
    Being a young narrowboating couple, do you you follow youtubers Danni and Joe? They also had a battery upgrade wish.
    I hope the next physics challenge works out for Amy, too ;-)

      A pancake boat sounds amazing! We'll have to keep that in mind in case we ever end up in that area! The only problem with the Chromecast is it still relies on a 240V outlet, which is a bit of a pain! But it's okay we can sort it!

    Why is the seahorse on its side? Surely it should be the other way up?

    I use a chromecast on both tv's it's much more user friendly than ug in cables but I am on Android so that likes chromecast well.

      We did look into those and they look really good but we are short on sockets etc so went with a smart tv instead 😊

    Please tell me you had the bottom of the boat inspected for structural integrity. If the hatch is that bad, cant imagine what the maintenance on the rest of the boat has been.

    I enjoy watching you both bur there's something I don't understand. Why don't vegans just come up with their own food instead of having vegan duck, vegan full English etc?. Why would you want what looks like a plate of egg bacon and sausages in front of you if you were against eating it?

      Thanks for watching! 😊
      The reason we have fake ‘meat’ is quite simple really, we like the taste of meat. Nobody goes vegan because they don’t like the taste of meat, it’s more that this way for us it’s better as no animals have to die 😊
      So we can still get the satisfaction of a ‘beef’ burger without the need for animals to be killed.

      Our household has vegans and vegetarians. We like the taste of meat just don't want anything to have died so we can eat it. The products you describe provide a way of eating foods we like without causing harm to an animal so win/win. If it also encourages a meat eater to have some meat free meals then that's awesome.🙂

    Sorry Wes. I usually agree with you but in this case Amy’s nail looked way better than yours. Her’s being bent was even better. Compared to her’s your’s looked like a utility pole. 😂
