You could invest in a "Coal Saver", It's a stainless steel circular mesh screen that you put in the centre of the fire, and stack the coals in it. It'll protect your fire bricks, and also help reduce the volume of coal used to heat the boat.. As always an entertaining Vlog you always make me smile. Keep it up guys 👍
My grandfather used to tell me " If you learn one thing today, then it has been a good day " Well done you two, tackling new maintenance jobs and succeeding. 👍
Think i will have to pop over the road later for some Blackcountry orange chips , carnt wait for next vlog when your fire is lit and is all cosy and toasty for winter . Hopefully no damp under your bed this year .Happy boating to all 4 of you xxx
Lovely vid guys, really enjoyed it. I know it's not a competition, but your boating videos are by far the most fun and interesting to watch, and Wes is just constantly hilarious.
OK! So, like an amateur, I just got home after a show!! First fire of the new winter and didn't do any of this (got caught out, and it's cold) Long story short, smoke everywhere, and thanks to your video, I have a plan for tomorrow. Thanks from Myra D
It doesn't matter how long it takes or how many extra steps have to be done. What matters is figuring it out and finishing. That, my dears, is anything but failure. It is total success! Congratulations 🎉 Stay safe, warm and well.
Hi Amy and Wes, Well, I am very proud of you both. Love watching all your adventures, and this week is no exception. Even washing the cap of the chimney in the River was a great idea, even though it did fall in first, but you rescued it and it was nice and clean. When you came across issues in the quest to get the fire ready for the winter, you always came up with a Great "Boat Time" solution. Great Vlog guys, and again so well put together and edited. Hoping Rufus went ofor his walk, somewhat slightly delayed. Hope Dupes is OK? Loved every second of this week's Vlog. Have a great week. Take care.
Sorry guys but 🤣🤣🤣 you so make us laugh but hey you did it. Just a rip clean at the end of spring then it’s all ready for you to use when it get cold. Really do love you vlogs love to you both hugs for ruffles hope he got his walk. Take care
I'm so glad I discovered you ❤️ both of you are the most lovely amazing people, just genuine and real ! ❤️ thankyou for making me smile every week xx if you ever come back to Wales I'm bringing chips 🍟 😉 xxx
Just a small tip for any future jobs involving removing rusty bolts. If you spray the bolt with EasyOut or WD40 it will soak into the rust. Then gently try to tighten the bolt avoiding breaking the bolt head. Next try to untighten the bolt and the rust bond should be broken so the bolt will come out undamaged. When you sealed the flue pipe with sealant it would have been better to pack the joint with small diameter rope first before adding the sealant. Tips I was given before I tackled a similar job on my old wood burner.
We so enjoy watching your videos. We’re not on a boat yet, watching and learning from you guys and others. We will definitely follow your mantra on chips with everything 😊
0:52 "Expose the lie, Amy" :'DD loved this bit of the video so much! I'm so sorry you had so many issues with the stove, but you did a great job! It looks all nice and ready for the winter 🔥
Truly hilarious, thank you. Maybe you should consider preparing the fire in the summer!!! And yes the fire looks so lovely when painted, we do ours before and after winter. But very impressed with the teamwork!
Hi Amy/Wes, You both did a fine job on the fire servicing. Always proud of you guy's and how you tackle the ups and downs of boat life. take care & stay safe. 😁
I just love your DIY vlogs and how you overcome any problems you have. Always makes for a very entertaining watch 😂. Be interested to see if you use less coal this winter. Have you thought of getting a coal cage? They’re brilliant. X
WD40 always on nuts and bolts that have been heated or exposed to moisture. Spray on, have a cup of tea then gently try loosening. Also helps to slightly tighten first, before rotating to loosen. It helps break the seal and free the thread.
You guys are hysterically funny! I love watching you solve these dense problems..and I love your methods. I would just buy a new stove…since we are here in Texas, stove not needed, but I love watching you working on yours!
Check out narrowboat James built 374 he bought a coal cage, that would preserve your fire bricks and the seal as logs or coal will stay inside the cage and burn efficiently. Also protecting your glass. Maybe consider preparing your fire cleaning during summer. All in all you both done very well and carried out assembling your fire back together. Keep warm, keep safe and keep sane. 🤪💚
Definitely get the nuts and bolts sorted.they can be drilled out and new bolts fitted.go careful when tightening them up,so easy to crack the glass....
Make sure to check this so you can make sure not to miss out on the £500 governments winter fuel support for narrowbaoters from the narrowboat that james built: ua-cam.com/video/WBz7L_S82lI/v-deo.html
What? All that faffin about and you don't light the fire at the end? I am so disappointed I wanted to see some flames! lol, good episode as always you too, even if I didn't get to see some fire!
What a pair of bodgers!😅 FYI, chips are very bad for you (said the pot to the kettle - both blackened by coal soot).🙃 Also, wood creates something like a quarter less soot😷 (though its heat output is lower), is cheaper than coal and it is possible to source supplies online.🤗
I always have a old 2 inch paint brush to use in my stove to get all the old ash out when the fire has gone out…..I hope the fire cement works to hold the nut on….I would try to get the door to someone who could re tap for new nuts and bolts
Great video, as usual. Your new camera footage looks great. I keep hearing a noise on the footage though... I think its the noise of the auto focus. It sounds like my old DSLR auto focus did. Not sure how you can ghet around it. Keep up the great content. I always look forward to your videos.
Yeah we have noticed that, rather annoying 😔 it was bothering us too haha! Sorry about it. We have had a look at the settings, hopefully it isn’t too annoying! Thank you so much 😊
I am concerned about the fitting of the glass , When it gets hot the glass “will” fall out Get the bolts on the door drilled out and replaced, My old log burner had the same problem in the end I drilled the door and put nuts and bolts which have been in place for a long time Got new fire for the boat and the old one is fitted in garage, “”Be careful “”
Hi Amy Wes ,Wes have heard of wd40 that would have helped, you are doing a great job between you nice new glass you will be able to see the fire roaring up the chimney 😢 cut the top of the sealer with a Stanley knife or something like you two seam to over come most problem well done ,I hate using a mastic gun I always mark a mess lol 😂 😊well till next time take care keep yourself safe,John 😂👍🌹🇬🇧👀🤫🤭🤔🫢😤😤😋👏👏👏👏🤭😦
Don’t paint your stove just use stove black. It’s just like shoe polish for stoves you just rub it in with a shoe brush. Keeps it looking lovely and stops it rusting.
Are you supposed to cement the fire bricks in? I have no idea, I just know you had to in our furnace, wondering about the gap between bricks. Well done you 👏🏼👏🏼 That is for sure a dirty job but needs to be done, hopefully you will have a nice cosy fuel efficient 🤣😂 winter this year. I’m sure you’ll know by now that stove black will smoke when you light the stove the first time. 🫣🙋🏼♀️
Are you going to stock pile wood for this winter? I've heard the price of coal is outrageous. Is wood a cleaner burn than coal? I bet the right trees will smell wonderful, when burning
Great video,I’d be tempted to get a drill or get a mechanic to drill holes in the door so new bolts can be fitted ( sealed on the outside) for holding the glass in place
Wes is a comedy genius! "Are you trying lure a cat?!" I properly guffawed - he was properly on form in this one!
😂 your comment made him very smug thank you Sian

I’m so sorry I didn’t see you had already said this 👌🏻
Watch this space 🤭 we might have one!
Thank you so much 😊
@@BoatTime think you will have to start using your radiators
@@BoatTime the rope stops co2 leaking out I hope you have alarms in your boat
@@BoatTime we Burn phurnacite it stays in for 18 hours a scuttle of coal lasts me 3 days
I watch you guys from California. I'm a little old lady who watches All the narrow boat blogs. BUT you are my favorite. You can see the love.
Oh Denise that’s so lovely thank you!! 🥰 and hello from cold rainy England!
😂 Thank you for the “expert demonstration” - I will remember about the Throat Plate for years to come…
😂😂
Very educational yet funny, esp the bit about heating the sky 🤦♀️😂🔥
😂 the things you learn a year in!
My grandfather used to tell me " If you learn one thing today, then it has been a good day "
Well done you two, tackling new maintenance jobs and succeeding. 👍
Love that! 🤗 thanks for sharing and watching! 😊

That means a lot!! thank you so much! 😊💞

Aha yes it’s a real dark art that takes some practise! Good luck! 😉

Well done guys 👏👏 now for the warm, comforting heat.
Thank you for making me smile! I'm very inspired by the way you tackle challenges! Fire looks so smart now 🥰
What a cracking job you’ve done with the fire just think in a couple of years time new boaters will be watching your videos to how it’s done 😊
Truly hilarious, thank you. Maybe you should consider preparing the fire in the summer!!! And yes the fire looks so lovely when painted, we do ours before and after winter. But very impressed with the teamwork!
So true, you have to have a take away after a big food shop, otherwise you end up eating everything you’ve bought in one night 😂🤣😂
Exactly 😂😂 no point putting it all away to get back out again
Another beautiful video... I feel like a protective mum towards you guys! Well, I am 51 now 🤣😃
Take care and stay safe lovelies ❤❤
awesome, iv just done our glass and rope, what a B*** ache...at least you have heaters. cracking vlog

Easiest way to open a caulk tube is with a hacksaw 👍
Great vlog guy loving the fire. Take care
Thank you!! 💞
I laughed so much but well done. Hope you’re warm and cozy now 🤓
WD40 always on nuts and bolts that have been heated or exposed to moisture.
Spray on, have a cup of tea then gently try loosening.
Also helps to slightly tighten first, before rotating to loosen. It helps break the seal and free the thread.
Good bit of hard graft. Well done!!!
You guys are hysterically funny! I love watching you solve these dense problems..and I love your methods. I would just buy a new stove…since we are here in Texas, stove not needed, but I love watching you working on yours!
Absolutely fantastic. You keep learning we are proud of the way you don't give in.
Well Done both, met you at the Crick show this year. You make me laugh out loud. Keep having fun, your both so happy🐰x
Hard work well done.what i love is you have a go and you dont give up.excellent 🌺🌺
Good on you both you try and don’t give up 👍🏻 excellent job x
Thank you!! 🥰
😆 "...excessive heat loss". You guys do make me LOL so often. Hopefully you can save on coal this year
Couldn’t believe it when we read it 😂🤦🏻♀️thank you!!

I felt immensely proud of you both! ❤❤🎉
🥹🥹 thank you!
You both did great with the fire looking great and love your nails x
Drill out the broken screws to the next size and retap hole for the next size screw. Tools needed drill drill bit and a standard tap and die kit.
👏👏👏well done, stove is looking good x
Well done 👏
Definitely get the nuts and bolts sorted.they can be drilled out and new bolts fitted.go careful when tightening them up,so easy to crack the glass....
Thank you! 👍🏻 going to try get something sorted
I seem to remember David from Cruising the Cut had to replace the whole door because these nuts and bolts wouldn't turn then broke .... well done
We were thinking this may be the case for ours soon 😬 thank you!
Make sure to check this so you can make sure not to miss out on the £500 governments winter fuel support for narrowbaoters from the narrowboat that james built: ua-cam.com/video/WBz7L_S82lI/v-deo.html
Thank you! We watched that last night, great news! 🤞🏻 will hopefully apply asap
Can they weld new bolts on the door. Wouldn’t want carbon Monoxide to leak out during the night! Love your videos, thanks so much. Randy from USA
We are hoping to take it in for welding as soon as we come across a place! But we have carbon monoxide detectors to be safe 😊 thanks for watching!
Why dont you get some clear sealant for cracks on roof ?
Think we may do this as a temporary fix! But scared to make it worse by sealing water in there 😬
What? All that faffin about and you don't light the fire at the end? I am so disappointed I wanted to see some flames! lol, good episode as always you too, even if I didn't get to see some fire!

Yeah we have noticed that, rather annoying 😔 it was bothering us too haha! Sorry about it. We have had a look at the settings, hopefully it isn’t too annoying!
Thank you so much 😊
Is it cold on a narrow boat ? 😀
😂 It is on ours! 😅😥
I am concerned about the fitting of the glass , When it gets hot the glass “will” fall out
Get the bolts on the door drilled out and replaced, My old log burner had the same problem
in the end I drilled the door and put nuts and bolts which have been in place for a long time
Got new fire for the boat and the old one is fitted in garage, “”Be careful “”
It’s just a temporary fix for now until we can get to a boat yard 😊 but seems to be holding up okay so far

Yeah we went for polish in the end, still worked well! 😊

❤❤
I hope you have a carbon monoxide detector on your boat . FYI , those do expire after a period of usage and start beeping. Be safe and warm.
We do of course and test it regularly :) thank you!
Are you going to stock pile wood for this winter? I've heard the price of coal is outrageous. Is wood a cleaner burn than coal? I bet the right trees will smell wonderful, when burning
We are! Well, trying to as much as possible 😊 it burns much cleaner, less ash and fumes too! We just have to make sure to dry it out enough!
A metal fab person should be able to remove the broken bolts
Thank you!
OMG messy Marvin and messy Marva.
😂 it’s a messy job well done
The whole point of winter is COLD 🥶
Great video,I’d be tempted to get a drill or get a mechanic to drill holes in the door so new bolts can be fitted ( sealed on the outside) for holding the glass in place
