    Apple released the 2019 Mac Pro at their WWDC keynote to much applause. Sure, things like iPadOS, system-wide dark mode, and the creation of Project Catalyst (formerly known as Marzipan) which allows you to run iOS apps on the Mac are all major software changes, but the new Mac Pro looks amazing. The question is, can the 2019 Mac Pro compete with desktop workstation PCs using its server-grade hardware or is it just too expensive and overpriced like Macs of recent years? Snazzy Labs analyzes the new Mac Pro and its Intel Xeon W Cascade Lake CPUs.

      @TheLuchsKing yes that is true. However they pitched the pc to the entire world. Last I checked your average person doesn't need a 50k computer. Also their base mac's spec is laughable. 256GB ssd? For a 6grand build? LOL. Only a 8 core processor? Only 16gb ram? FOR 6 GRAND? People put the same pc together for around $2500. What an insane markup. Mac+Monitor+stand+tax= $14000.
      For $14k I put a 32 core thread ripper build together. Includes 128 gb of ram at 3600mhz, TWO 2080ti 11gb gpus, 4tb ssd, 4tb NVME, 10TB HDD, THREE 5k MSI monitors, AND I even included all the little things like mouse/keyboard/headphones. My ending price was $12.5 grand.

As a statement purchase I'm sure some boutique companies may buy one to put on reception, but that's about it. For reviewers, the mileage on comparisons to significantly cheaper PC's and other similarly capable Mac's is there but may backfire on Apple.

    • @TheSteveSteele
      @TheSteveSteele 5 років тому

      Pondo Pondo Nice to meet you. Film scoring requires this kind of power. And this is not a small industry. This is an industry that routinely spends $20,000 on a pair of studio reference monitors (speakers), and $8,000 - 10,000 for microphones. Thousands of dollars just to “soundproof” small rooms. I build custom template solutions for composers (some in Hollywood, some at Disney, and many others all over the world). I’m also a composer with a three slaved Mac Pro rig. These composers I work with currently slave multiple PCs and Macs together to host sample libraries and virtual instruments. The templates, which are made from several applications running together (also in a host/slave environment), tax the CPU, the I/O and require enormous amounts of memory per workstation (96GBs is usually the starting point for each machine), and all of this to get real-time playback. You may be familiar with Hans Zimmer, (composer - Inception, the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy and many many other big budget films), the last time I bothered to look, he was running 10 PCs slaved together to be able to playback his compositions in real-time.
      In yesterday’s keynote, there was a demonstration of Logic X playing back 1000 audio tracks (not a huge deal), but was also at the same time, playing back 1000 virtual instrument channels. And it was all done in one application. I don’t think most people knew what they were witnessing. This is unheard of. I’ve never seen anything come close to this. That Mac Pro didn’t even flinch. I know how to squeeze every last ounce of power out of workstations, and what I saw in that demo was a minor miracle. Film composers would love to be able to run their template on one workstation, in one application (no hosting apps), and with these monitors too. Although the wide curved displays are really best for us.
      I’m not sure why you say “they won’t work with macOS.” Who is “they”? The CUDA crowd is pretty much all PC, but that’s one segment out of an entire industry. At least in the music industry, macOS is by far the most widely used OS. For one thing Pro Tools is superior on the macOS platform. Windows is generally not well liked in this industry. Although some film scorers will use PCs for their slave machines they won’t use them for their host machine.
      I hope that gives you some insight into one group of users that would love to get their hands on this beast. And many will of course because this kind of money is routinely spent on precision devices. Actually, the one industry where the 2013 “trashcan” Mac did pretty well in was in the film scoring, recording studio, tour production industries. Most audio applications don’t require any kind of GPU, (at least nothing special). DAWs are all CPU based. For those users, (and ones who didn’t need internal PCIe), the trashcan Mac Pro was a really good performer up until the iMac Pro came out.

    I'm a design pro and have been in the biz for years. As someone who has both experience using a wide variety of PC's and Mac's, I can honestly say that for the price Apple is asking for this rig is outlandish. You're better off buying the Imac pro to supply your work needs IF you necessarily need to use an Mac. Just for the price they're asking you can custom build a PC whereas maybe get the parts on sale or not for a hell of a lot cheaper and/or powerful to exactly to your own specifications. It's a well known fact that Apple doesn't like people messing with the internals of their machines, so getting a custom PC for your everyday heavy work usage would be a better investment if not for the price, just for the added comfort of swapping parts effortlessly.

    Based on the table you show at 9:51 you miss labeled the Base config CPU. Based on Apple's website it is the 749$ one with 3.5Ghz base and 4Ghz boost clock. So the even CPU is sub par for a 6k$ base machine as all the Ryzen AMD CPUs support ECC.

    What about the other ports you didn't mention like the 4 thunderbolt 3 ports and the HDMI port on the bottom of the machine at 6:13 in the video above the power ?

      That’s dependent on the GPU config you get.

      @@snazzy Oh okay I wasn't aware of that, sucks that they have very little inputs and outputs on a class of machine like this... seems to be the way with Apple though you pay more for less. Will be interesting to see what you think when you actually buy one for yourself to test out.
