I love this scene so much. The songs melody is childlike yet menacing, like a long forgotten music box, whilst it’s soft, relaxed vocals depict depressing realities and maniacal revenge fantasies. The apartment is lit brightly, but purposely leaves dark, shadowy corners. The unknown, hidden within plain sight. The further in we go, the creepier the imagery, culminating in something hidden deep within - the terrifying fortune teller with its truly disturbing laugh, that Edward then goes on to speak directly to - as though it were alive. Almost like it were a friend who’s in on his plans. I love it all. It captures the term “criminally insane” beautifully. We know everything we need to about the inner workings of Nygma’s mind in one short scene. Cinematic brilliance 👌
Schumacher wasnt so inept as people made him out to be after these movies. This one was certainly lightyears ahead of batman & robin in terms of quality since this one actually had a flair and somewhat better writing
+rusty shackleford Gotham is like a hybrid of certain parts of NYC, New Jersey, Baltimore, Chicago and Philadelphia. With that in mind, a top floor unit like Ed Nygma's lair, even if its an older, slightly rundown building, would be pretty damn expensive, easily $2,000-4,000/month. Especially being near the rail line, and since he's got wall to wall skylights and freaking high ass ceilings - so while he doesn't have a lot of space width wise, like the video shows he's got space length wise and has also built up vertically. New Yorkers and DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) people would kill for this apartment. Call me crazy but I always wanted to live in a place like this for a while after I saw this scene in the movie as a kid. Not with all that depressing clutter and sad ass "weird loner" interior, but at least IKEA level. Especially if this guy is working as a researcher for Wayne Enterprises. But yeah, all his cash probably went into that immoral prototype of his.
+John Juan Moon That's interesting to me, not knowing a lot about big cities, 'cause to me his apartment being so small, cramped and being close to the railway lines underlines, to me, how poor and isolated he is.
Probably and I'm sure in the fancy and bad ass designed parts of Gotham it was like in the intro scenes but to be honest I doubt Edward wanted a fancy place. He put most of his income into the developing the box and enough to live. That place is in the crappy part of town so I'm sure he got a bargain due to that plus his courage to live there. Not many would live there and I'm sure he was one of the few if the only one who showed an interest in it. Plus you could see some of his mental issues all over the place. He had those Wayne posters and pics with the weird TV's and the Pauly Shore laugh machine. There's no telling what kind of eff'ed up things happened there. One thing I love about this scene was how Joel showed it all off. There was a great deal of work done by the set people and the cinematographer and good for Joel to show their work off.

Whatever anyone thinks about the Schumacher movies, no one can doubt how brilliant Barbara Ling's production design was. Gotham looked fucking incredible in BF and B&R. That apartment of Edward's is fucking genius.
Omg I've just realised in each of the original four films the bad guys kill their bosses .The joker killed carl grissom .Catwoman killed max shreck .Riddler killed fred stickley .Poison ivy killed jason woodroe
Edward Nygma was basically an amalgam of Cable Guy, Ace Ventura and the Mask. I like all the nuances to his character. I think his invention caused him to lose his sanity. In this scene he was already delusional and creepy but after adopting his Riddler persona Nygma became more manic and erratic, and highly unstable. It was a result of absorbing brain waves. Remember what happens to him at the end when his invention overloads? His condition worsens to the point where he doesn’t even know who he is anymore. I thought it was tragic because all Edward Nygma wanted was recognition for being a genius.
He may have not gotten his recognition in the movie, but he actually did by two face by himself saying that he’s a genius (him referring to the riddler) now that to me is true love, because they had such a special bond together, always supported one another until the end 💚💜 💕💯and even tho I’m not a gay person at all, never have been nor will I ever be.. Or probably they aren’t either… I lowkey kinda always shipped them together as a couple.
I remember being 9 & going downtown some night to the movies to watch this. This scene is always in my memory because back then the song sucked me in. I always liked batman, always, but Nygmas messed mind and phisical life kind of made jealous, like, maybe being in the other side was as cool.
This is such a perfect Batman villain scene, like they're the kind of psychos that will make costumes in their bedroom and shit. Way creepier than wealthy villains like you have in Marvel movies.
Funny how a 2 minute scene gives so much info and background to a character with no exposition at all. Whoever did the set design for this movie is a genius aswell.
One of the best Batman movies ever watch this as a kid growing up I was 7 when this came out. Childhood memories I'll never forget n the music sets these scene up perfect
Throwback I used to own this movie on VHS i got it for christmas 1995 and I loved it so much. I watched it every friday as soon as I got off of school My friends at school used to be so jealous because they only got to see the movie in theaters🤣
Forever is a very good movie with a dazzling production design and some of the best action scenes in any Batman movie, but this 1 min scene in Edward Nygma’s apartment above the (green) Criss Cross Laundry is simply perfect. That scene is all we need to peer into Edward’s lonely, obsessive life. He has just one line, a question delivered to The Guesser, which is just perfect. Add the whimsical yet dark Flaming Lips song, Bad Days, and you can see Schumacker’s craft. Plus, Jim Carrey is himself a dark, yet maniacal creative genius. This scene manages to transcend the entire movie.
Joaquin Phoenix Joker kind of reminds me of Jim Carrey's Riddler. They are both insane men who are treated like shit at their work, they both live in depressing appartments in a poor Gotham neighbourhood, they're both obsessed over a Wayne, they both visited Wayne Mannor, they were both disappointed by their idols which led them to become criminals...
You know, the Schumacher Batman movies are flawed but as far as the cityscape, it’s cool as hell. The Arkham games did a great job at taking the best elements of all the movies’ aesthetics and managed to blend them seamlessly; the neon of Schumacher, the gothic/Art Deco of Burton, the sleek modern realism of Nolan and held together with the mortar of the animated series’ vibe and acting. Batman Forever is a flawed but very underrated film and a big part of my childhood. It came out at an age when my mind fully absorbed all the imagery and it still has a place in my heart
One interesting thought, in most films the hero is sort of the underdog. But in this it's batman who has the money, the technology, the big house, where as the riddler is the underdog challenger....
Val Kilmer did a much better job then George Clooney and his Batman voice wasn't as annoying as Bale, Keaton still is the gold standard imo, didn't see Ben Affleck take on him
Dis agree but to each his own.Bale was better then Keaton an Kilmer for me because he was better developed.Kilmer wasnt bad but because his best character development scenes were deleted from the finale cut it hurt his performance. He was reduced from all right to ok.Bales Batman works better because he was developed better an we got more into his head an he played the difference between Bruce an Batman better.Keaton did a great job as a goth recluse Batman that stays out of the public eye as Bruce an only goes out into the public when he has to.Clooney was easily the worst Batman as he had no effort into his version.Afflecks Batman is the Dark Knight Returns Batman from that comic an from the Arkham video games.Hes the most bad ass fighting Batman we have had. An has the best Bat voice.
I believe Micheal Keaton was a better Bruce Wayne than Batman. Bale was fine because he had the whole environment to help him. Kilmer looked like Kilmer.... & Clooney just had to have his balls cut off & ask all of us for an apollogy.
