I saw Joe Jackson in NYC about 20 years ago. I was with someone who knew someone and we ended up in a small bar after the show with Joe Jackson and a few others. The place wasn’t crowded; Joe was friendly, easy to approach and we had a decent conversation. He listened to whoever he was speaking with and just hung out until we left. A great guy!
If the Bar was in Soho, we might have crossed paths! I was in town for the New Music Seminar and I was in SoHo tripping on LSD and Joe Jackson walked by me and into a very small Bar. Too High to say Hi.
Yes, it is! Had it on Vinyl, back in the day when music, musicians and stereo equipment was the BEST sounding....! Sorry, Bluetooth sucks, I must be from the dinosaur era.... lol
This man is in my soul. He gave me the soundtrack of my youth ....helped shape my worldview, validated my joy, pain and anger , and gave me the best live shows imaginable.
I met Joe while working in the cocktail bar at the holiday inn in Chelsea. As an 🇦🇺, what a great experience it was back in the day😊 Lovely, humble guy.
Was there ANY better than Joe and the band during the New Wave/Punk era? No, not even close. Their combination of song writing, innovation, musical prowess, raw energy and live performance was completely unparalleled. No others that could do it all like Joe and the boys.
Talkinh Heads. Listen to "The Name Of The Band Is Talking Heads" if you want to hear a band with a brilliant songbook, play better on stage than in the studio.
❤❤ I come back, too. Every movement is perfection, his sense of humor with the audience and crew, and it's kind of a sad song. His lyrics show how vulnerable he really is.
1:46 .This lad feels hurt... emotionally scarred for sure. A great singer/songwriter... classic. Great songs... great musicians. Legendary performance.
Absolute genius!...Joe had everything at the time. The bohemian look, delivered by a passionate new wave troubadour. His music is unique and as progressive today as it was back then, getting better and better through the years.
In the early 80s my best friend had a reel-to-reel tape deck and he had a bootlegged copies of live concerts. Joe Jackson was one of them. In the California at the time, there was no radio station that would play this genre of music at the time but we loved just hearing him and the band! He became one of our favorite singers/bands throughout the 80s and we finallly saw him when MTV came out. I love him so. I love how "queer" this song is. A song about sex and confusion and hurt. It really digs into me. This performance is out of this world too-he's so young, and sings with such veracity, and the sweat and the confusion of the words. It's a #1 gem I come back to time and time again. Like the late 70s videos of B52s someone filmed in a bar where they are young, raw and a kind of talent that just eats you up!
Was at a small club in Atlanta (Alex coolies) electric ball room, magical night with Joe and his band. They used the same restroom as the public. Those were special times for this musical genre
Joe Jackson's work and image still feel really fresh. I was really surprised that his songs weren't 90's. He's played a lot on the radio and could have sworn these were released in 96 or something.
It seems fresher, not as old as the 80s, because you remember it so well, as if it was really the 90s when it came out. At least we can remember to begin with haha 😂 I realize your post is a year old, but thought I would reply anyway 🤗 take care...
I was always fascinated with this guy because of his ability to synthesize punk, jazz and reggae. I would say that Joe Jackson, The Police, The Clash, Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello and even Men At Work really expanded my musical palette in those days.
He is so, so very good. He alone WAS the 80s. And still changing. Still giving. And ain't it just like planet Earth that he would be totally and completely underrated?
Lisa Mackres An absolutely brilliant song. Sung with a real hard punk attitude and soulful voice. A real classic of its day because he combined different music styles... punk, pop, new wave and soul.
Graham remains my freaking hero. So solid, while basically being the main melodic instrument in the band. Check out the wild stuff he plays under the chorus, and then the out. A stinkin' genius I say.
It’s wonderful to see some appreciation for Graham Maby’s bass playing. The guy was perfect for this band and on Joe’s first couple of albums. Read an interview where he said fans ask why he played differently on Joe’s later material and on other projects. Guess they don’t realize that a melodic and punchy style doesn’t work for all genres.
What the hell is wrong with you tonight? I can’t seem to say or do the right thing…. As a kid, I thought these were fanciful lyrics, and as an adult having had my own relationships, these lyrics hit entirely different. Thanks Joe!
Omg this takes me back to lazy dayz and wayz in my 20s when songs like this came out. Songs that grabbed me and shook me. What a gem this is. He was so great to listen to.
Saw him on this tour and got to speak to the band in the tour bus....more of a van really. He wrote my friend, massive fan, a really nice letter. Top guy, top songs.
We were all much younger then, 40 years ago, frightening! The last time I dressed up for Halloween, it was as Joe Jackson on the cover of I'm the man, I was 14. We figured we'd take one last stab at childhood.
Hetty, That's the beauty, soul & genius of Joe Jackson. His sardonic wisdom even at such a young age lends the real power to his music. I believe that he's one of the greatest song writers and arrangers of the 20th Century!
Saw Joe & his band back in the late 70s & early 80s WOW what shows, I cant think of one band today who even comes close and he is still doing it that new Duke album is amazing.....
Dynamite video...thanks for posting. 1980...the year I graduated High School, and everyone was listening to Joe Jackson. Look Sharp and I'm the Man hit us all like a ton of bricks. Joe is doing his angry young man bit here, and believe me, in 1980, as today, we just love(d) it.
Cat i agree with your comment ,,,squeeze were so similar with their lyrics ,, joes classics all tell a story , so did Squeeze xx i will always adore this genius of a bloke xx lol Jane x🎶🎸🎹🎺🎷🎤💽🎥🎵🎵xxx
Still procesing I've discovered this song through Thom Yorke and Johnny Grenwood (The Smile). Got me hooked by the sound and all. It's the type of melody and vibe nobody does anymore. Capsule time!
Was meant to see him this year at the London Palladium, for my Birthday - he cancelled, probably the only chance I'd ever get, disappointed, to say the least. Cannot afford London in August!
It is amazing to me that was I was in H.S. when this came out; how many people did not realize that it is tongue in cheek. Great tune; thank you for posting.
I just rediscovered Joe Jackson, so to speak. Man. He was the man in his own way. This performance was great. I was wondering what it would sound like with him alone on the piano.
Excellent song. One of his very, very best tunes. He is so underrated.
Absolutely. I unfortunately just discovered him and I can’t stop listening! This song is WAY ahead of time
Been listening to Joe since the late 70's!! Always loved his music and still do 45 years later ❤
@@wisconsindonna, Joe has many great songs.
Joe is my absolute fave
He’s the every man…who just happens to be an astounding creator and performer.

Wow. A song that sounds just as good live as the record did. This was back in the days when artists could actually sing. Great song.

..i'm glad THIS Joe Jackson is still around..
This song has been haunting me lately… makes me feel 16 again listening to WLIR on my parents Magnavox stereo full blast. ❤❤❤
Haven't heard anyone mention LIR on UA-cam before. Cool.
Sweet kind of memories.
I'm 57 next week..still come back to when music was music
I’m 45, but I absolutely understand and come back for the same
One of my all time favourite songs. Jackson was a poet.
A masterpiece. Never ages. Great writer

He is such a perfectionist, and anytime I want to hear a live version of a song done right, I come back to this year after year. It's just masterful.
Totally agree!

Yes, I've never heard anything they've done live be anything other than flawless, or damn close
Takes me back to the 80’s , young, great times, no big worries in life!
Great music from JJ
1:46 .This lad feels hurt... emotionally scarred for sure. A great singer/songwriter... classic. Great songs... great musicians. Legendary performance.
Legendary! And the hurt comes through, exquisitely. It's amazing the cameras caught this performance and it was preserved. I am so very grateful!
No abstraction here. ❤😢❤
And don't we just relate to it.
I keep coming back to this.....it must be one of the most perfect performances of any song ever, even nuances of facial expression.....wow!
It's like you're speaking for me. I keep coming back to this song, and seeing just what you describe. Perfection.

I totally agree. The song is awesome. Plus, his band is so dialed in. They are great!
Genius. Great performance of a brilliant song.
I've been listening to Joe Jackson lately. I forgot what a great, unique and interesting writer and performer he was. Another great song here.
I always thought Elvis Costello got the love that Joe deserved. Both great talents but why Joe got overlooked is beyond me.
This live version is crazy excellent. What a delivery Joe!
Who said anything about love?... Brilliant, beautiful musician! ❤️ 🌹

I saw Joe Jackson in 1984 at the 1984 Worlds Fair in New Orleans. Unbelievably great band live. Band was really tight. Great Bass player.
Over three decades later and I still find him sensual and attractive. What a wonderful heart he has.

@@morpheusspirit6609 I agree with you on that my dear this is a pretty great song
Perhaps his best song for all of you sophisticates who need to wise up. Aside from the role reversal it's got a haunting gorgeous sound.
Yes he was, great maybe still could be, I see him in Portsmouth, UK, now and then, it would be great to see him come back
It's not role reversal, it's just a man speaking his experience.
I wish I could transport back to these musical times. How many memories come back from great music like this.
I'm seeing him this Friday night. "Let's do the Time Warp again"
This brings back so many great memories.
Graham remains my freaking hero. So solid, while basically being the main melodic instrument in the band. Check out the wild stuff he plays under the chorus, and then the out. A stinkin' genius I say.
Without a doubt, Graham Maby is the most under-rated bass guitarist in the history of Rock & Roll. The guy is beyond talented, he's gifted!
3 cats made me want to be a bass player: Graham, Pino, and Pete Farndon, with a special mention for Tina Weymouth.
los blancos
Graham is my friend Laurie's cousin. Joe wrote the song Is She Really Going Out With Him about Graham's sister.
It’s wonderful to see some appreciation for Graham Maby’s bass playing. The guy was perfect for this band and on Joe’s first couple of albums.

I recall taping this concert off the radio onto a cassette tape and wore it out. Fantastic concert. Wish I could find the whole thing.
Perfectly crafted songs with sharp, thoughtful lyrics, interesting structures, tight playing and passion. Brilliant!

I love this song Joe Jackson and is perfectly talented and sarcastic
