I did a tour with him and he produced a single of ours. Really top man, never acted the pop-star, never disrespected people. Great pianist, singer, and songwriter. Grossly undervalued.
i think the word 'underrated' is one of the most misused words in the comment section on youtube, specially for musicians. Anything is apparently underrated. I don't think it is underrated at all, you're just trying to say: I like it more than others do! Yeah, that's fine. Not anyone can like anything with the same amount of enthusiasm.
As a young, anxious, lad. Full of hope, fear, and confusion. This song truly spoke to me. So simple and yet so complex. Everytime I hear it, it's the 70's. No phone, no fridge, no clue. Born in 1965, 56 as I write and when I play this, my mum and dad are still alive, I'm still a virgin, and still living in thurmaston. I like to think that when you die, you can revisit any time period you want. If I could, I'd go back and wallow in my past. Funny how some songs truly strike a chord. This song means so much to me and the lad I was.
Lifetime virginity is actually a badge of honour. Save it for when you find a girl who is worth it - and if you go your whole life without finding her take heart in the fact that you waited. Don't you know that it's different for girls?
100% with you, I know what you mean. Early '80, I'm 12, sat with my transistor radio sitting by the bedroom air vent to keep warm and mum and dad are back with me - sat downstairs in front of the TV. This tune and Steppin' Out are so perfect.

I first heard this song in 1979 when I was 11years old, Joe Jackson is so talented I love his music. He has such a unique voice I can't believe this song is over 40 years old.😀😀
I was born in 1979. But I heard this on repeats of TOTP some years back and I love his music. Can't understand why he isn't as popular as other musicians. Very underrated.
Still stands up well ( like Shakespeare), in 2020...One of those eternal problems, that he recognized...The human condition....Plus a great melody/sound ...
From 1979 til 1986 Joe Jackson was probably the best pop rock british songwriter and performer, great albums like Look Sharp, I'm the Man, Jumpin'Jive, Night and Day, Body and Soul, Big World, all of them Classics. Then he began to do Movie Soundtracks, Jazz, Adult Contemporary, and his big moment of popularity ended. Anyway he's still doing great music.

Me, dreadfully underrated and underappreciated. This guy was the highlight of the 80s, so different from the synth pop rubbish which got all the press. His only crime was he wasn't 'pretty' enough for the MTV audience. Bloody shame.

Totally agree. Saw them support the "Stones" at Roundhay park Leeds in 1982. Also supporting were The J Geils Band, and George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Joe Jackson was the best of the three support acts.
Brilliant. Lyrics that are witty & wise and painfully, painfully true. How could anyone that age be so mature! Underneath the compulsory 'angsty' look of the post-punk era, this smart man sneaked in thoughtful, sensitive lyrics. The musicality is not showing off, it's just THERE! That sweet melodious backing lets us know how heartfelt & aching the sentiment really is. There is a 2019 (i think!) TOTP3 version of this on UA-cam with just the man himself at a piano & playing this live. I was bracing myself for the worst but I was wrong. He still sings it brilliantly and backs it beautifully on the keyboard, all by himself. Have a look! What a talent! :)
