“Underrated?” Are we still going on about that? Is there not a better adjective to describe music, musicians and bands than this worn out word? Please! For God’s sake! Do better. Come up with something more meaningful and original or just don’t comment. Thank you.
One of the best songs of the 80s. I heard it all the time on radio while I was rushing around between fulltime college classes and a fulltime job. Music kept me going. Thank you, Joe Jackson for creating a masterpiece of fun! Brilliant!
Back in the last century we the feral youth of London used to frequent Soho and the west end under the neon lights and often wound up after the tube trains had all gone to bed sneaking into the all night Scala cinema on Charlotte st. , on several occasions would see joe watching the flicks and being as we would creep in via the fire door and sequester ourselves into the empty seats available and on one occasion I ended up sitting behind Joe who is insanely tall , in the interim we asked him if he could sit lower in the seat 😅 lots of laughter ….nice to see him playing this memorable tune 🎶
I tuned their Yamaha baby electric grand for their concert in the 80's in Arizona when this song was number 1! I still tune pianos at 71 years old and do many concerts here in Las Vegas! A great find for me here down memory lane! haha
Whoa 😮 - You Are my Hero. I landed in the US with $26 in my pocket and this song was my high⛽️ octane fuel that saw me through the valleys of existence 🙏🏻🕉️
Yep. It's those chords, they're bright and happy and at the same time slightly unsettling. Great song writing.... for what it's worth..... F#m 7 is optimistic the Bmaj9 is ambiguous, so you left unsure of the statement mid chorus Then the E at the end Is melancholy.
Glad you mentioned this. I find this feeling in a lot of his music. Perhaps also because what I was going through at the time that I really got into his music - it helped carry me during a very deep unrequited love of someone and mirrored my special joy and lonely aching when I was around her. The melancholy clearly there in the music and some words, the happy had associations of hope. To this day, for many years I've sort of avoided his music despite how much I love it, just because of the associated heartache. But it's been years and this popped up in my YT feed and I had to check it out. Just as expected - loved this song and this take, and it brought some tears. That's life. His music is about that personal life we all have, and can be surprisingly powerful tapping into those memories. That takes a special artist.
@@rhmayer1 reason you all love this is because it torn through fabrics of space time... just like tears4fears head over heels and everybody wants to rule the world... christopher cross sailing... and a number of other masterpieces that literally torn through the fibers of the holographic simulation you are part of... by now you should start realizing all of this...
I've been listening to Mr. Jackson since 1982, always special, and the voice is the same as the one from 40+ years ago, well done Mr. Jackson, thank you a gentleman ahead of his time, kudos
Brilliant! Joe Jackson STILL kickin' ass 50 years on! A VERY, VERY, underrated musician, writer and all around performer! Kudos brother.....from one of your own generation! Thx!

My problem with over/underrated is what does it matter? Anyone with some real grasp of music KNEW Joe was a terrific writer and performer. For those with no musical understanding, who cares!
I agree. There is a real triumph and a melancholy to it. I have very fond memories of hearing this tune on the radio for the first time. And it’s stuck with me ever since.
@@CoffinPrick I found a lot of his music had that unique characteristic of melancholy and some happiness - some hope. It is indeed emotional, tapping into something deep.
Totally. I went into the record shop in Fleet Hants and felt weird as I thought I was the only one buying it...didnt others realise it was so cool...glad to be proven right after all these years in 2024 😎
For me one of the most beautiful song themes I know. Every time I hear it it's like walking on a flowering meadow in spring with a wide clear blue sky above me. The mood this piece creates is unique. Is there anybody who knows what I mean and feels the same way?
I'm the guy, with the glasses, in the balcony trying to enjoy the show. It never fails I'm always flanked by at least one middle aged bopping bimbo. The only blessing this night they didn't allow beverages in the theater so I didn't have to deal with beer splashing about during their retreat to adolescence. One heck of a show otherwise.
Takes me right back to my room in Leeds UK after I'd moved away to college. In the early 1980s. So long ago. But with this song on I can still see out my window. A brilliant song. And Leeds is a brilliant city full of fantastic Yorkshire people.
I'm a 70' s fan boy . It's my favourite decade for music . I have to confess that most of the 80's music styles and events flew over my head ,sadly ! But Joe Jackson's 'Stepping Out ' is a superior piece of a tune that sounds as good today as it did in 1982 on introduction . Brilliant !
Saw him at a packed outdoor venue in Berkeley CA in about 1990. It was cold, drizzly and I was fighting a miserable cold, but that concert was THE most musical show I've ever seen. Fast forward to 2004. I took my son to see him at a small old theatre in Boulder CO on a frigid, icy night. We stood right in front of Joe about 10 feet back from the stage. He looked right at us several times and nodded, I knew that he knew I'm a keyboardist too. He was so cool, took his time, was spontaneous, and his audience is oen of the most appreciative of any artist. His tour bus was parked right in front of the theatre. As we exited and looked up at this huge vehicle we saw a sign in the window about 1/2 way back, "Bald guys never have a bad hair day." Great sense of humor. I enjoy the movie he scored too, "Tucker, The man and his Dream."
I wish i could remember, my guitarist buddy (who was a huge JJ fan and was excited to introduce his music to me) took me. All I remember was that it was outdoors, drizzly, cold and every seat was packed. Having seen him from like 20 feet away I don't think he's anywhere near that tall.
When this song first came out, it became an instant favorite of mine! It was in heavy rotation back then on the FM pop stations. I miss this 80's! Still one of my most favorite songs ever!
This was one of my favorite songs off the album "Night And Day". Hard to believe it came out in 1982. It's doesn't sound outdated at all. Been a fan of his music for decades. He a underrated and exceptional musician. If you have any doubts, Listen to his "Body And Soul" album also.
Every song on 'Night & Day' is fantastic. One of the greatest albums ever recorded. Brilliant lyrics, arrangements, playing, recording and production. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I listened to it over and over and over again on my Walkman. Most of you young f***ers don't even know what that is, do you?
I had no idea it was 1982 as I thought it was 2024?! Un. Freaking. Real. His voice has not changed ONE iota. Simply stunned. One of the all-time most distinctive voices. Well done, Joe. Well done.
I remember seeing Joe Jackson at Poplar Creek Music Theater outside of Chicago. He had a bit where he just played piano and singing. it was very quiet and there were people yelling and he not so politely told them to f off to the bar haha
This song was playing as we moved into our home in Indiana. It had just come out. I’m taking her to the airport tomorrow to move to AZ after all these years. How appropriate to hear this version tonite.
When my ex wife was trying to wear me down during our divorce, my great victory was her walking in on my beautiful then 7 yr old/ now 37 yr old beautiful daughter dancing round the kitchen to this. Love Joe.
Wow! Thank you for that experience. That was great. This song is what I imagined being in my 20's in the 80's was supposed to be. [Spoiler alert, it wasn't] Every time I hear this song, I romance my 20's with it. Thank you for sharing. Shannon, Michigan, USA.

80s hair metal guitar player here. Always loved Joe Jackson. My late father was a piano player and when Joe Jackson hit MTV, he was like....Hell,, yeah.....
This guy has made me so happy so many times with his music. The depth of emotion that he stirs up puts him in a very rare category of artist. For me anyway.
Joe Jackson...pure brilliance as musician, writer, orchestra, et al. One of the most underrated musicians of the era. Genius.
wholeheartedly agree with your comment.

A wise musician who still puts everything into a song they’ve played a billion times, knowing how important it is for fans.
Agreed - don't you hate those artists who 'update' their hits because they're bored of playing them.
Well, he just loves tunes

Some of these songs are like security blankets. They were with me in the 80s, 90s, 00's 10s and now 20s. Just crazy.

A brilliant song. And Leeds is a brilliant city full of fantastic Yorkshire people.
I saw Joe in Winnipeg Manitoba about 5 years ago, what a great concert the man's voice is still amazing.
Love the vibe here. Just a man, a drum machine and a piano, encouraging the audience to sing along with his killer timeless song.
Don't forget the instrument he said was the most important one in the song (the glockenspiel)!

Instantly transported back to mid 80’s / this music video would play in high rotation on MTV 😎
Grew up with this. Man’s a legend. I recall him making music in a church and recording it straight to disc without all the mixing shit. Innovative
I was 12 or 13 when I first saw Joe Jackson on TV back in the 80's doing his Steppin' Out.
This song is so iconic to the 80s that it brings that decade everytime it plays, at least to me.
Iconic song from the 80’s. Brings happiness, in a shitty time. Thank you Joe!
Another under rated 80's genius that never made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame..He looks and sounds the same as then..Amazed his voice held up
