Brewing a Motueka Blonde Ale Partial Mash | Coopers Australian Pale Ale

- This is a partial-mash brew, using the Coopers Australian Pale Ale beer kit as the base. Instead of using malt extract to make up most the extra fermentables required for this kit, I mashed some grain and created a wort. The extract recipe is below, but I used nearly 2kg of malt and mashed it using BIAB method and added a small amount of dextrose to bump up the ABV a little. A small amount of hops was also added during the boiling of the wort.
Recipe for 23l batch:
1 x Coopers Australian Pale Ale Beer Kit
1.5 kg Pale Ale Malt
200g Carapils
250g Wheat Malt
20g Motueka Hop Pellets @ last 5 mins of boil
150g Dextrose
1 x Crossmyloof Midland Yeast
Fermented at 20oC for 14 days (+ cold crashed for 48 hours).
OG - 1.046
FG - 1.010
ABV 4.7%

Sounds lovely! I’m an all grain brewer, but like to try partial mash again. And I like the coopers pale ale kits cheers
Yeah it's definitely a step up from the bag of sugar or brew enhancers. The Coopers Pale kit is one of my favourites. Cheers
Great video! 👍 I also found that cold-crashing just messes up carbonation. It becomes a bit of a guess as to how much priming sugar to add due to the amount of absorbed CO2 when chilled. I don't bother now.
As you said yourself, you might as well go fully AG as you spent as much time doing that batch as AG anyway!
Cheers!!
brewed it today, took me probably 4 hours with set up and clean up,mind you i am slow and retired ...so i got the time 😅😎🥳
Fantastic. Hope it went well. Now the waiting game...😉
Beer looked like it turned out great, top work.
It really did. It was worth the extra effort in this case. Cheers!
brewing this today...using pilsener malt as it's all i had, plus the other stuff i had
I'm sure that will be fine. Let me know how it turns out.
@@G-townbrewer i will
Great videos! I’ve pretty much watched your whole back catalogue now. Loads of information there.
I’ve just started brewing. I tried a similar idea to your steeped chocolate stout which is currently conditioning. So itching to see how it turns out!
Also just got a Ritchie’s pale ale on the go yesterday… debating weather to leave the kit as is with an upgraded yeast and beer enhancer or to dry hop it too… decisions…!
Keep the videos coming it’s all good stuff… Cheers!
Thanks! The chocolate stout gets better and better with age, so try and put some by for a few months if you can. Good luck with the Richies Pale whatever you decide. Cheers!
That’s the go it’s the best thing you can do to better your kits! That’s a good kit to use for it as well. I’ve made some really good bases using that tin. Next step all grain BIAB or something
It sure is! I do dabble with BIAB but don't often have the time, so I make do with kits and extract brews. Cheers!
That’s one on my list 🤙👍
Very informative video as always, as I jump between Kits and AG I never considered using a kit for a base
Thanks. Yeah give it go sometime. Checkout the link in the description to the article I refer to.
Nice one! Glad to see this turned out well! I've copied down the recipe for future reference, in the hopes that kits come back to the US soon. I love tinkering with them. Can't remember ever hearing (or reading) the word Crossmyloof before today. This is the 2nd time, as I see you pitched a yeast with that name! Funny coincidence. I first read it about 20 minutes ago on the thumbnail of the new Beer Kit Reviews Partridge video which I'm watching next. Cheers! 🍺
Thanks mate. Yeah Crossmyloof are a home brew supplier based in Scotland and take their name from an area in Glasgow of the same name. I used their Midland yeast for this brew which is a Nottingham equivalent which has worked well for me with this kit before.
@@G-townbrewer That's quite interesting about the name. Cheers!
@@G-townbrewer So Big Banana's latest video features a beer with yeast from Crossmyloof Brew. One of which I recognized from past videos, "HAZE." I now realize I haven't been paying attention to the name over the years. 😳Took a look at their website. Nice shop with a cool story. Thanks for opening my eyes to that. Looking forward to your next video. Cheers! 🍺
@@Skid-Baxter Ah I havent tried that one yet. I've not come across that channel so I'll go and check it out. Cheers!
@@G-townbrewer Yes. It's called Big Banana Brewing. Cheers!
thanks....i will try this
It's bit more effort, but worth it if you have the time in my opinion. Cheers!
@@G-townbrewer i do....i'm retired😎
Very informative video.i didn't catch how much sugar that you added.
Thanks for watching. The full recipe is in the description. Happy brewing!
6:43 at the end raise to 80 degrees and hold for 10 mins? I've never heard that before
Yep this is the 'mash out' stage. It's not essential so you could skip but it's just to maximise the conversion process.
I would like to try that do you get less home brew taste wene using grains? Really like your videos 🙂
Thanks mate. Yeah, no noticble home brew twang. It's worth the effort if you have the time.
Nice, how much water did you have in your pot to boil the grains?
Thanks. I started with 10 litres of bottled spring water and rinsed (sparged) with a further 2.
just trying to figure out your currency,i live in Canada...British Currency to me is very confusing,no surprise i guess🤣
Haha, well one pound (a quid) is roughly 1.5 Canadian dollars I think.
@@G-townbrewer thanks
