In the first 2024 episode of Deep Dive we are going to explore the dark side of Hollywood parents by taking a dive into the tragic childhood of Macaulay Culkin. In the 90's Macaulay reached unprecedented amounts of stardom with the release of the iconic film Home Alone. But as Macaulay's star grew so did his "Dadager's" greed causing a young Mack to be overworked to the point that he would completely disappear from the limelight.

I was nearly cast in the co-starring role for Josh & Sam, by the same woman that discovered Maculkin. I didn't have a portfolio or experience and was not chosen, but she was very impressed. She gave my mom numbers to get the ball rolling on a career and I'm grateful my lazy mom never followed through. It would have been a short career just for one. Hollyweird is officially over.

I hate how child stars are consistently abused in every form for YEARS, then when they get a little older and start choosing to black out bad memories by doing drugs, drinking, acting out, etc, the media and the public vilify them!

Well said, it seems like child actors cannot win, they're exploited when they're young and abandoned when they grow out of being cash cows for their family, left to spiral on their own.

The difference now is that I see so many more comment like yours empathising with these child actors and understanding how bad those situations were. Compared to even ten years ago, where they'd get slaughtered in the comment sections. There's much more awareness about this issue, so there is improvement.

And same for some parents that used their children's salary to support the family and never put anything away for their future. I remember Gary Coleman being one of the first that came out and said how his parents used all his money leaving him with nothing when he aged out of the cute stage.

I don't understand how people can be so sympathetic with loved ones, but when they see someone well known, famous/infamous, they seem to not give a damn because they think with fame &money, they should just have it all, have their shit together, and everything is perfect for them in their lives 🥴 it's absolutely insane & ignorant as hell. Shit like that just shows how ignorant, judgmental &hateful this world is as a whole.

I used to work at a store in NYC in an area where a lot of celebrities had apartments and were regulars. Macaulay was hands down one of the kindest and chillest regular customers we had. Everyone in our store adored him. He had no qualms about talking and interacting with us minimum wage making, often exploited retail workers. I remember he was asking about art supplies to one of my coworkers, heard she wanted to be an actress herself and actually spent time asking her questions about it and giving her genuine career advice. My coworker was so grateful. He is really a rare gem 💎

I thought issues of parents taking the money were solved by the Coogan Law.
But it looks like that's a California state law, not federal, so maybe if the minor performer is based in any other state, then the parents can steal the money...?

Macaulay and Michael Jackson are similar in many ways like having abusive fathers who physically, mentally and emotionally abused them, same kind of mothers, large family, grow up poor, get famous young, overworked at young age, the star of the family, breadwinners for their families, etc. There's just too many similarities I think Michael Jackson see himself in him. The only thing is Macaulay escape Hollywood, get his life on track and is doing well for himself; living well. I'm happy for him. I wish him nothing, but the best in life cause he truly deserves it.

WHY DO PEOPLE CONTINUE TO HAVE CHILDREN THEY CANT AFFORD?!?!?! They’re lucky it worked out for them BUT it’s pretty selfish to keep having kids you can’t afford and you’re keeping them from succeeding in life and keeping them from doing activities they could be interested in. And if you can’t afford to feed them??? Ridiculous.

I heard very vaguely about his issues with his Dad but the details are devastating. That speech at the end was so touching and heartwarming. I’m so happy for him to be in a stable place experiencing genuine love. May good things continue to be bestowed upon him and his own little family ❤️✨

It was so brave of him to put his foot down and stop acting. The whole world would've said why are you throwing away your career?? But he knew what he truly wanted and it wasn't that. To make that decision and follow through at 14 is so courageous

These parents are gross!! It’s like different star, same story. They rip their kids childhoods away from them, hoard as much money as they can like it’s all gonna run out. Ironically it would prob last so much longer if they thought of their kids mental well being. It’s so sad & then they spend the rest of their lifetime recovering. Soooo gross!! I could list a dozen other child stars with a similar story off the top of my head. We. Need. Laws for these innocent kids!

This was such a good deep dive! I’m so glad his life seems peaceful now and he has someone who relates to him on a level only a select can understand.
It’s weird how I always check on him periodically because I grew up in the 90s so all his movies were constantly playing in our house. It’s like a childhood friend who never saw in person again but wanna know how they are doing.

I love Macaulay’s loyalty towards MJ. Mac never stopped supporting MJ especially during the darkest moments of his life unlike most the celebrities who were present at his funeral. I love how he valued his friendship with Michael and doesn’t sell his friendship by releasing a book. I bet when Michael met Mac’s father for the first time, he could see his father in the eyes of Mac’s father. They both are child stars and have traumatic childhood due to their abusive father. MJ did a fantastic decision to name Mac as The Godfather of his kids. I truly believe that MJ welcomed all these child stars like Mac in his ranch to protect them from pedophilia in Hollywood.

I would love to see one of those deep dives about Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy. He really went off the rails during the last Harry Potter movies as well as after HP and he's now known for being almost obsessed with the HP franchise. As far as I know, he's now doing well but I was shocked to find out about his past

*This video was GREAT. I only wish you would have talked some of the various moments in his life a bit more! For instance, it seemed this video harped on a lot of his negative issues, but then flew by speaking about him meeting Brenda! It also would have been cool if you had mentioned that they have 2 boys & one of their sons is named, "Dakota" after his late sister, who was unfortunately killed by a car hitting her. 💔 However they kept her spirit alive with their son, Dakota, who by the way looks just like Mack* 😭😭
*It also would have been cool if you had mentioned his podcast & website, "Bunny Ears," which was a really hilarious parody podcast he had and brought guests on or talked about the band he was in, "The Pizza Underground." You could have also discussed that short video series Mack & his friends made, (the videos are easily accessible here on UA-cam) which was supposed to show "Kevin" all grown up with mental health issues bc he kept getting forgotten on vacation as a child* 😂
*Anyway, if you ever make a part 2 for this video, now you have a better idea about where to start!!* 😅❤
