46+2 hes singing about becoming the next species in evolution (humans have 44+2 = 46 chromosomes) his solution is stepping through his "shadow" ( a lot of connections to carl jungs philosophy of accepting the shadow within yourself to become whole) thats why when the slow part begins and the drums set it they try to do it as chaotic as possible, representing musicaly how the evolution takes place and he transforms into a new beeing (accepting the shadow like an armor) yea, their lyrics can be really genius, then theres songs that are straight up recipes in german or some shit.
well , integrating the shadow is also Masculinity and how men become Man, by facing your violent dark side and controlling it to become whole, the 46-2 is about possibly unlocking the chromosomes and it might lead to a new existence of humanity on a unconscious plane. The most wide theory about this lyrics (which there are many as it is intentionally vague) is that integrating your shadow is the key to reach a higher state of consciousness, so its a mix of the Shadow from Carl Young's work with Hippie notions of a global consciousness in my humble opinion. You can dive into it and come up with your own interpretation or just enjoy it, that's tool :D
I would add that there is evidence of fused chromosomes in human DNA. So going back to 24 chromosome pairs would be a move back to when those chromosomes weren’t fused. Also, all the great apes have 24 chromosome pairs but humans only 23 so it would be a devolution if you think about.
It's a song about personal growth and change, and the painful process of self improvement. 46 and two is a reference to our chromosomes (humans currently have 22 pairs and one pair of sex chromosomes, or 44 + 2, the title is referencing evolving to our next stage).
I'm so glad you're enjoying Tool. You're definitely hooked. I'm really looking forward to the Pneuma drum cam. You're gonna love it. Also the Grudge and Right in Two with lyrics.

This song is the ultimate motivator when you listen to the lyrics. The whole song is about transforming and evolving into something more than you currently are. So awesome.
You said something about sounds and it made me think of something about music knowledge that you might like. When the sound gradually gets louder is a crescendo. Getting softer is decrescendo. I've seen you react strongly to it. Rock bands use it a lot to emphasize their emotions in the music even without lyrics. That's what makes an awesome band like Tool. They know what they're doing with music knowledge
Love it man, thanks for getting into TOOL. keep going on the TOOL list... Above all, best part is seeing that you are ACTUALLY into it.. you get it bro! Welcome!!!
The odd time signatures are a staple of Progressive Rock from Pink Floyd to Yes and RUSH through Dream Theater to TOOL. These bands create a unique sound through using odd time signatures but doing in a way that you either don't notice it or making it sound, just natural, though it isn't.
Seeing your facial expressions change. As the music takes its dips and turns, was absolutely beautiful to see. Keep enjoying tool, you won’t regret it.
I love it. I love the discovery. Seen these guys nine times in concert. It's always a trip. Every Tool track on every album is worthy of listen and reaction. I'm going to recommend The Grudge next.
Im loving this series haha as an old tool fan i love seein people just discovering them. U should check out the parabol/parabola music video Also for 46&2 we have 46 chromosomes in out genes before the 2: Y (male) and X (female). The song is as u guessed a song where hes struggling with himself and his shadow (in the Jungian sense) Maynard has overcome a drug addiction and alot of this era of tool refrences that with themes of a spiritual journey, battling oneself, shame, and the unknown.
Like one of our soldiers said, "I think you're ready for AENIMA", lyrics are just amazing and will make you really think about it for awhile after hearing it, I didn't mention the music because is sort of given that it KICKS A$$
You're gonne love the video of Tool's drummer, Danny Carey, playing their song Pneuma live. He gets wild on the rhythms and timings -- it's insane to watch.
My guess is that the "whisper" function of the song is the fact that the band members of Tool understood what Audio Sensory Meridian Response(ASMR) was before most of the people on the internets who 'sploited the pyschoacoustics idea.
"function"... I'm going to say you are speaking... accurately. Something sadly lacking in most common parlance today... You must be a scientist. Or at least one at heart. And yeah, I bet they did. Peace.
@@primateinterfacetechnologi6220 The word "function" is very useful to describe even basic mathematics. F(n) where n equals something is a very basic and absurdly useful idea.
I've always listened to oldies, rock, hip-hop, rap, jazz, EDM, ... just about everything. And now I've been watching react videos of people discovering great musicians for the first time and so often I hear "I've only ever listened to hip-hop/rap, why has no one ever told me about [___]?"
Well my dark chocolate flavoured brother, as a half Scottish half Australian white chocolate assorted bloke, may I suggest Danny Carey's drum cam video for 'Pneuma'? It will blow your frikken mind! Love your reactions bro. Keep on keeping the faith! Love ya bro ❤️
I have loved this song forever, but never really understood Maynard’s lyrics (I think the universe was waiting for me to be ready). Only about 6 months ago, did it reveal itself to me. The concept is based on Carl Jung, and “shadow work”. That is digging up your past traumas and hurts/wounds (“I’ve been picking scabs again”), that we have hidden in our “shadow”. We hid and repress a lot of ourselves, that we find, or other people have expressed, are “undesirable”. It is ideas and feelings we have rejected and hidden in our shadow. By doing this, and uncovering our hidden parts, and dealing with our trauma, we heal and become whole again, if we don’t, we are not wholly ourselves, we are not who we were meant to be, or were before those traumas and experiences. 46 and 2 is the idea that we can evolve (46 and 2 chromosomes, instead of our 44 and 2 we have now) by the expansion or our own consciousness.
The other reason I suggest the drum cam video is that it forces you to focus on the drums, but Tool consists of 4 geniuses and there is so much going in a Tool song. Focus on the bass for a measure, then focus on the vocals, then the guitar. Each time I listen to the same song I notice something different. It’s like watching the same sunset from 4 different locations. Each view is so cool and so amazing but different; and some how all 4 fit together perfectly and form the whole sunset.
This is probably my favorite TOOL song. Every little detail from every band member is perfectly executed and shoved in your face. My vote is for Pneuma next
It's a song about evolution that uses the metaphor of genetic and physical evolution to promote intellectual and spiritual evolution. The references to “shedding skin” and “crawling on my belly” invite comparison to a snake, which replaces its skin as it grows. The old is cast aside, and the new embraced...
Tool is a great band and 46 and 2 is a great song. Just want you to know that the world of rock is full of great songs that will make you over-rep in the gym. Try Disturbed--Down With the Sickness; Kid Rock--Bawitdaba; or Smashing Pumkins--Cherub Rock.
Omg. watching you watch his is epic.
My fav song ever.
Love it man, thanks for getting into TOOL. keep going on the TOOL list... Above all, best part is seeing that you are ACTUALLY into it.. you get it bro! Welcome!!!
this is a calm track... LMFAO.... watching this as i type so... you've heard it by now. one of my fave songs to play
Jambi is pronounced like Jom-bee. - like John..
THE GRUDGE!!!!! GET IT BOY!!!! LOVING THIS SHIT!!!!!
And once you are fully vested in this glorious band you need to watch the drum cam version of Pneuma.
Im loving this series haha as an old tool fan i love seein people just discovering them. U should check out the parabol/parabola music video
Also for 46&2 we have 46 chromosomes in out genes before the 2: Y (male) and X (female). The song is as u guessed a song where hes struggling with himself and his shadow (in the Jungian sense)
Maynard has overcome a drug addiction and alot of this era of tool refrences that with themes of a spiritual journey, battling oneself, shame, and the unknown.
Like one of our soldiers said, "I think you're ready for AENIMA", lyrics are just amazing and will make you really think about it for awhile after hearing it, I didn't mention the music because is sort of given that it KICKS A$$
That smile when a section hits your soul. Tool is next level. Each member is amazing and as a whole they gel better than anyone has business doing.
Tempest is a great workout song, everything on their last album is crazy.
7empest!
You're gonne love the video of Tool's drummer, Danny Carey, playing their song Pneuma live. He gets wild on the rhythms and timings -- it's insane to watch.
VICARIOUS will put you on a heavy railway train ride of heavy simple driving rhythm that will blow your mind !!!
Watching people discovering Tool. My favourite thing. Do Crawl Away
Check out A Perfect Circle Judith the Lead Singer of Tool is also the Lead of A Perfect Circle
JayT That is not done like other voice effect. That was just guitar with certain tuning and twangy slight reverb. But easy to think that.
Please do Vicarious! You loved The Pot, so you'll love that one too! High energy, thought-provoking lyrics, great stuff!
10:24 - Exactly right! This is the You vs You. Facing the Shadow so you can elevate it to consciousness and integrate it fully.
It's on now my boy ...You have opened up a whole new rabbit hole of goods. Really enjoy your videos ✌️👊😁
Parabol/Parabola.... For me their greatest song out of many great songs
Thanks for the positive words.
The banger list is endless and will make you want to slam your head through the drywall into the neighbor's dining room just as their cutting into their pork chops.
AENIMA, AENIMA, AENIMA, AENIMA.....😂👍👍👍👍👍
Tool "Grudge" will give you an out of body experience... the Drums are FIRE!
Love your positivity man if you have helped 1 person you have done your job. God bless and thank you 🙏

PNEUMA DRUM CAM!!!! Danny Carey 🔥🐙🔥🐙
Lost keys (blame Hoffman) + Rosetta Stoned 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
This song is definitely an inner battle. Shadows, snakes, shedding skin. Want to find what I’ve been hiding. As you get older it becomes much simpler.
I'm jealous. You have so much to hear for the first time. Buckle up young man. Every single song is hard.
