as a 55 yr old marine veteran the one TOOL song speaking to me on a personal and subconscious level is INVINCIBLE. on my hikes or in my living room with lights and tv off..
The line "witness the beauty" always strikes right to my heart. Beauty exists in all things everywhere hidden behind the veil of certainty. Let go and let it in. The shape of a galaxy, the texture of sand, the sound of the world open up to it.
I just made a pot of coffee and caught a Puff....this is fantastic!!! She's a gem and this might be better than your original journey which I followed through the entire thing!! Spiral Out my brother (and sister)!!!
But Tool = math at the same time. Amazing song and to write something to the fibonacci sequence that sounds so good and has meaningful lyrics is unprecedented
Oh awesome, you're listening to one of the greatest songs ever written and produced. People talk about how vulnerable and open Maynard was with Wings Pt 1 and 2 (and for good reason), but I would argue that the middle poetic section of Lateralus is Maynard being just as open and revealing to the core of his being. Its a love letter to existence. Even after listening to this song for 23 years, it still affects me intellectually and emotionally. On occasion I still discover some new sound deep in the mix, or some dynamic between sounds. AND YES! The intro is like being sonically birthed into existence!
@@BH02377 sure, it could be called a bridge, but that's not the only way to label it. While the song structure can be described as ABABCD with this as the 'C' bridge section, it can also be thought of as a sonic triptych of three movements that align with the thematic qualities of the lyrics. The middle movement is the poetic section.
Add the unparalleled skill of Tool and the perfect Golden Ratio of the Fibinachi Sequence to the rhythm of the music and lyrics and this is the result.
Reflection is a great spiritual song. I think both parts of Wings for Marie rank high as greatest tributes to a passed loved one. Very emotional-especially the build and climax in the second song.
Tool is able to touch the soul in so many ways. Something about the frequency and rythm seem to come from some eternal wisdom. I think that is why its so fun to see others hearing it for the first time. We get to see how connected we all are.
I love watching you show and rediscover TOOL with her, man! You had one of my top favorite TOOL journeys, and I was bummed to see you disappear for a while, but each of these re-reactions is really enjoyable! Spiral out! 🌀
Crying to Tool songs and getting emotional and taking journey's means you're truly listening, you're connecting with the experience. The thing with their music too is that it gets better and better as you listen, the same song can be listened to over and over and over and they're so unique and intricate you get new things from them each time, each instrument tells a story, every part of every song has a presence. Tool can be soft and emotional, transcendental and spiritual, and aggressive and so fucking hard and angry. It servers all aspects of a life experience.
The loud waaah noise you hear toward the end is the bassist Justin Chancellor using a phaser and waaah peddle and I believe he is picking upwards when he does it.
This video was SO inspiring to watch - thank you both! 🙏 As someone with writing aspirations of my own, this song taps into something spiritual and transcendent and helps me glimpse what could be possible. It was amazing to watch you two have a very similar experience. Val - If you want to go on a deeply emotional journey in which tears will likely be shed, listen to 10,000 Days by Tool. You have to know the backstory to that song. The short version is that Maynard wrote it in tribute to his mother Judith Marie Keenan after she passed away. She had lived for 27 years (10,000 days) in a state of paralysis after having had cerebral aneurysm at the age of 32. You should listen to the song Judith first ... that song is Stage #1 written when Maynard was angry at his mother's religious faith in spite of her condition. 10,000 Days is Stage #2, written years later after Judith Marie had passed. Maynard had grown and made more peace with his feelings by that point, and he goes deep to bring listeners into a very personal world. Its an incredibly moving journey to experience with him and the band. Would love to watch your reaction to those songs if you're up for it : )
The “mwahum” is a fuzz bass (well Justin has three channels going on) either doing octave down then rolling it back or rolling octave up on through the original (quite critical) whammy for bass. I have the whammy v2 which almost captures it. You can hear the same essence in the schism bridge or the invincible bass solo. But yeah, hard attack, clean + fuzz hard compressed (high mids up), a slight twist of phase (though sometimes flange) then roll on or roll off the octave effect (as long as you go up). Someone showed me they did it using a 5th up and played from the 7th to make that work but as Justin uses the whammy bass original and that doesn’t have that setting I’m not convinced
@@urbanshamanproductions9092 And btw maybe I wasn't paying enough attention to the entire video and it was mentioned but I will say it anyway. The syllables in the lyrics in the begging of the song are made after the Fibonnaci sequence, which goes 1-2-3-5-8 and forms a spiral, its a mathematical sequence and its funny cause the then they say overanalyzing separates the body from the mind.b
If you look into some of their source idea's, the Fibonacci Sequence plays a huge part in the lyrical design and overall idea of the song. Understanding how the Sequence itself spirals out infinitely, but is somehow found everywhere in nature.
There was a period when I only listened to this song on repeat (Feb-November 2015). At the time I was working out a lot. I would workout about 2-3 hours a day, 7 days a week. While working out, I always had earbuds in but the only song I had on my phone was Lateralus. Then anytime I was in my car driving, I would use my phone to listen to music and once again I only had the 1 song on my phone. I would listen to Lateralus around 20 times a day. I did this for a little more than 10 months. Thats about 6000 listens in that period. The reason it ended at 10 months is because I had to purchase a new phone. I had a Droid that had Lateralus on it but the new phone I had got was an iPhone and as we all know Tool wasn’t on iTunes at the time. Anyways, the song had not diminished in the slightest to me on the 6000th listen. It continued to give me chill bumps daily and was the only song I craved to listen to. So I purchased the CD to have in my car and so I was able to still listen to Lateralus but I also listened to the rest of the album, obviously, because it’s good. The Lateralus track continued remaining above all other songs, in my opinion. Then in 2019 Tool became available on iTunes and the official lyrics were released for the songs. Up until that point I knew the song was associated with FS but I never cared enough to understand why there was a relation between the two. I found the song profound from what I interpreted, it continued to be that way even after realizing I heard a couple lyrics incorrectly. But one time when I was refreshing myself with the lyrics, I stumbled upon a summary of the song describing some of the FS inspirations. I found it neat and impressive how the syllables followed the FS. Unfortunately, I lost something when I became aware of the syllable pattern. The song is still my favorite song but it is no longer able to give me chill bumps. I don’t know why becoming aware affected me to such a degree, maybe I’m unable to not think about the song now and that’s tainted it (which the song warns about) but I know it saddens me. I held out hope that they would perform the song when I saw them in Knoxville back in November or when I saw them in Atlanta last month and I would possibly get chill bumps during the performance but unfortunately they didn’t.
Val, here ya go: ua-cam.com/video/uOHkeH2VaE0/v-deo.html so you can fully grasp how much of an absolutely Genius of a Masterpiece Lateralus really is. Fibonacci Sequence and Golden Ratio! Listening to it after having discovered its mathematical implications and the colossal compositional effort adds further flavor to this masterpiece. Do a little research...it's worth it!
Lateralus uses the Fibonacci sequence as a guide for the music to follow . The idea that the sequence can be found in nature is the reason why the song was created .
She is nailing it. Think we were all born, but can't remember when our minds actually began to realize what was around us. This song is structured on the Fibonacci sequence. In July 2017, Maynard's friend Joe Rogan described his writing process in his podcast; "He wrote a song to the Fibonacci sequence. The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical sequence. It starts from one, the next number is one, and the next number being two, creates the 2+1 which is three, continuing in this mathematical progression. That's how they found the chord progression. It began linking up to the Fibonacci sequence." The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (1), then (1), white are (2), all I see (3), in my infancy (5). Red and yellow then came to be (8), reaching out to me (5). Lets me see (3)." In the next verse, Maynard begins with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3. "As below so above and beyond I imagine (13). Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8). Push the envelope (5). Watch it bend (3)." The second verse adds the missing line to complete the sequence; "There is (2), so (1), much (1), more that (2), beckons me (3), to look through to these (5), infinite possibilities (8)." 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-8-13-8-5-3.
"It feels like an inner body experience" 10 seconds in and she its the nail on the head. The more the song progresses the more 'out of body' the experience begins.
There will never be another band like Tool, ever. I truly believe this is a once in a lifetime experience and I'm so fucking lucky I'm here for it! Can't wait for the next reaction.

Fibonacci sequence is a soothing sound.
Yes it’s a heartbeat of human being coming into the world where black and white is all he sees until red and yellow come and reach out to let him see
