🎵 TOOL Forty Six & 2 Reaction 🌒 This NEEDS to be Talked About

- Thanks for checking out our Tool reaction. Forty Six and 2 is right up our alley. This songs wades into the waters of different dimensions. The shadow isn't in the third dimension. You'll never be able to see it or touch it, but it's just as real as what you see with your eyes. It might actually be even more real than what we think of as 3D.

Firstly, you two are excessively attractive....truly. Brad, you are right there. Jung posited that the shadow is our darkness. All of our depravity, fears and insecurities reside in our shadow. The title 46 & 2 is a reference to our chromosomal evolution. Currently, we are at 44 & 2 (the 2 being our gender determinant at birth; xx or xy.) Jung (and Maynard) assert that the next evolution of humankind will be 46 & 2. Those two extra chromosomes will ascend us...I'll simplify it...to be one with nature. The premise? That we will rise above material desires, race, borders...all the pettiness that constricts, or devolves, our species. We will be one with nature. However, the catch is we have to ascend together; We have to ascend as a collective. Therefore, it's a pipe dream because humankind is...broken. (I am being diplomatic.) Oh, yeah...in order to ascend, to evolve, Jung says we have to come to terms with our shadow. Acknowledge our flaws, our darkness. Capitulate that we are imperfect...self-awareness. That's what Maynard is singing about. He is wholly imperfect, as we all are.
Oh wow! Thank you for the thorough breakdown and kind words 💯
THAT is absolutely BEAUTIFUL
They are very good-looking
After how this comment started out, I'm not sure anyone can top it! 😉
@@td315 my daughter has t21..
I'm glad Tool fans are here so my brain doesn't have to work.
😆😆💀
Nothing beats the tool army most loyal fan base ever. Rarely you see someone hate their songs
Same ...I do not know how many videos I have broken down info for...
@@slantz49 Keep it up, people always seem to have gotten there before me. Liking being lazy
As rabid as we are, Tool fans are very welcoming to new people listening to them and will flock to these kind of reaction videos to show support.
Handsome man wants to philosophize, beautiful woman wants to groove. Lol. Good job.
IMO... beautiful woman figured it out slightly before handsome man, but either way they're both better off in the depths of their discovery. Bless them both, and all of y'all here in the youtubes.
haha i was thinking the same thing, and remembering nights when i’ve tripped with friends and had that very archetypical dynamic play out
Rock n roll in a nut she’ll
It is well worth watching O'Keefe Music School perform this track - a group of really talented kids smashing it. They are all amazing, especially the drummer!
Keep up the great work, you two!
Yeh, it's a great performance. They and School of Rock have some really impressive performances by young folks.
Yes totally agree!
Yes!!! They are PHENOMENAL!
It's the best 46 and 2 cover I have ever seen and it's done by children
Great suggestion
That "DMT" artwork is used in a lot of their videos and album art. It's all done by an artist named Alex Grey. A truly prolific psychedelic artist. Some of his pieces are enormous in size and scale. He also writes and does performance art. A very fascinating dude
I follow Alex on IG. Artwork is awesome!
Entheogeneration. Creating the God in all of us
A good friend of mine actually paints with Alex
Adam Jones is also very much a part of Tool's artistic mastery. He works very closely with Alex Grey. In fact, Jones is directer on most all of Tool's videos and conceptual design. It has also been said that Grey is as much a part of the band as the band members because of the artistic connection that exists.
Oh lord...wait till you see what they poured into Lateralus
I was thinking the same thing 🤯
Tool might break them...
We're all on the spiral, some are in denial.
Fib sequence.
They already reacted to Lateralus but it was a cover audio of the song so they deleted it...
The feeling when you opened youtube at 1 am to listen to a song and randomly found this reaction channel, and now it's currently 3.30 am, and you can't stop watching Lex vibe through all your favourite songs
Thats about how I found this ,wanted to hear some Tool. I had subscribed before the night was over. Not only were their reactions great they’re an attractive couple too. Love watching you all.
Happened to me the other night
You can never fully understand Maynard James Keenan and his thought process. You'll go crazy. He went to West Point, made songs about parabolic measures, fibonacci measurements and goes into the detail of the number 13. He's a genius! If you go back and listen to numerous songs the keys follow the fibonacci system. 46&2 is genetics.
Awww yeaah
We got a new TOOL fan
He just don't know it yet 😅
2nd that for sure.
Lex is a rocker, through and through...
They're a good pair. Brad trying to read everything on screen. Lex going off on MY SHADOW. It's basically the two ways to enjoy Tool songs. Well played, duo.
Yeah she is!!! She's cute as hell too lol!!
@@HaikuBanter the head and the heart
I was in a bad accident a couple years back. The emergency crew who arrived to scoop me up were very concerned about my physical condition at the scene. My head was fine and I was speaking clearly, answering every question and reciting phone numbers. So it was a huge surprise to me when they put an IV in my arm and launched me into space with a large dose of ketamine without any warning. I thought I had died, truly. It was the only thing that made sense to me just then. It felt as if time had stopped and that one sliver of a moment had opened up into a whole new universe with me alone in the center of it. Trippiest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. Without artwork like this, I would never come even close to describing what I saw. I can say the DMT art is pretty close.
K-hole
I’ve had ketamine in IV clinical setting as well and never had tried any type of street drug in my life. As soon as the ketamine hit it was like I was disconnected from my entire body. No pain. I closed my eyes and it was like I was floating through space with all these odd visuals and memories of life. The disassociative part of it freaked me out so I just kept my eyes closed. maybe it was because I did it on IV but I can’t imagine doing it at a music festival or something like some people do. Maybe if I had a recliner in the middle of the crowd and no one was allowed to talk to me haha
Ohhh that sweet disassociation. I get ketamine iv treatments for pain…it can be quite the spiritual experience. Headphones up on full with Tool smashing through my brain!
I OD'ed when I was a kid. I know exactly what you mean about the one moment that lasts forever. Not a lifetime, Forever.
The song will blow your mind when you realize it’s about metamorphosis, and then it’ll REALLY blow your mind when you realize the MUSIC is going thru a metamorphosis as the song progresses…
You are about to get Tool heads in here like crazy. We love watching reactions to Tool songs because it’s like we get to relive our first time listening.
The first time listening to Tool was literally the day my life changed. Whole self conciousness is life changing
Absolutely Correct. I for one didn't see of know my reaction but remember it vividly. To see others experience it for the first time allows me to relive my own experience. Vicariously
💯💯
Lol right? My favorite reactions are TOOL reactions.
Vicariously
“We haven’t heard too many Tool songs so we’re still trying to get the hang of it.”
I’ve been listening to Tool since the “Opiate” ep which is nearly 30 years and I’m still getting the hang of it. Their music is so good and every listen brings something new to the table.
Right there with ya! Graduated Hs in 89 and was listening to Maynard 2 years later. Who knew!
right? my best experiences with tool have been just laying down with my eyes closed and headphones on. shut out all the other sensory inputs and just listen.
My 1st TOOL experience was '89. It was as side stage gig at a festival. Tool, Primus, and Soundgarden, in a row, as side stage acts. It was freaking awesome.
@@billdecat855 dude... I'm legitimately jealous.
@Apathy&Exhaustion Yeah, you're right. It must have been 90 and not 89. My bad. Still an awesome show.
Most TOOL songs are both musically and lyrically complex and you really gotta listen twice to really know what you’re listening to. What I love about y’all reacting to this is that Brad is focusing on the lyrics and really processing it internally, and Lex is just letting the music move her. Y’all are a perfect duo
So glad y’all love it ! Jung and his interpretation of shadow work are an important way to ascend into your highest good .
This is my favorite TOOL song and has been for 20 plus years. Also I feel old now.
I played this song in my High School talent show - I also feel old! Lol.
Mine too lol ya were old
Same
this came out in the late 90's i think
I feel personally attacked by this comment 😂
There are 2 stands of 23 chromosomes in DNA, so 46 total.
This song is Aweome and pretty deep.
The reference to DNA, metamorphosis, and change is probably referring the next evolution of mankind.
@Christopher Moltisanti right I totally forgot that part.
Hell of a song.
Perfect. Yall saved the day with these comments.
To bad that Theory is crap. A potato has 48.
@@viking_nor next time a potato make a song let me know
@Christopher Moltisanti so...let the rabbits wear glasses? (I know it was the cries of the carrots, but you get my joke!)
The more i watch these two, I realize how highly intelligent they are. I love their analysis on songs. They make me see and hear things I would not have on my own.
hahahaha....yeah sure. 😊
Brad needs to stfu and stop pausing every time he's confused.
@@brianbailey434 Let Lex do the talking.
Loved your video and how engrossed in the song you guys got. Love to see your reactions to the original official videos Tool did. They're something else and pretty special. Absolutely worth experiencing. Seriously the music videos are just... on another level.
I saw 46&2 and had to immediately click. This to me is one of their best songs.
Yep!
I agree it's right 0n par with 95% of their songs. I think Tool shittiest song would be most bands masterpiece.
@@MrJesusHKrist indeed.
@@MrJesusHKrist Couldn't agree more. Even with Fear Inoculum in the mix (I don't like that album at all), they really can't do anything that doesn't impress me or make me think, both mentally and musically.
46 x 2 and then Jambi…
1 and 2
"How bout you?"
"MY SHADOWWWW".... hahaha we know how it is xD
The artist that does Tool's artwork is Alex Grey. The song is about evolving into the next species. Shedding our skin coming through our shadow, coming out the other side into something greater. The picking our scabs, keeping old wounds open and never moving forward. The 46 and 2 is about our chromosomes, we have 46 and if you add 2 more we become something else. Love your reactions.
I've never commented, but Brad is so intellectually aware and Lex is so free flowing that y'all are a perfect combo. My wife and I run through the same colors. Mad respect to both of you, but I'm always impressed with you Brad.
That DMT picture is from a TOOL album 😏
Alex Grey is the artist..he has troves of amazing art
Yes, those faces are on the cover of the "10,000 Days" album.
The lead singer of tool has another band that I think you will also like. A Perfect Circle.
Also has a band called Puscifer.
Lex bouncing on the first big riff brought me to tears!
Watching people who haven’t lived Tool through their progression then discover them almost two decades and absolutely lose their collective sh*t over how amazing it is one of the best things ever.
If you want your mind blown go see Tool in concert...they're amazing live.
Saw them back on the 10,000 days your totally mind blowing!!
Then with Maynard's stage fright u never kno if hes gna stand in a corner with his back turned I find it fascinating
I tripped my face off during the crescendo of H live. Didn't take anything except 1/3 of a joint, didn't drink, Tool just took me elsewhere.
@@monstersnest8726 It's not stage fright, he likes watching Danny play drums. And I mean, who wouldn't want that view?
@@Hisdudeness9500 he does have stage fright. Hes publicly said that's one reason he doesn't perform sober. Look it up. And hes spoken about his stage fright many times first time I remember hearing it in the radio early 2000s maybe during an interview

@@brandonhinrichs387 thats wild. I never knew there was a switch up, I discovered them through Ghost reactions so I just thought that was always their thing. Interesting
Even if you dont agree with Jung'ian philosophy - if someone is even familiar with Jung you can generally assume that individual has a curious/inquisitive mind and is the type of person that you can have a good faith substantive conversation with
@@jamesrountree3991 50 years of studying Jazz percussion and a college degree in music with a focus on jazz percussion. If hes not touring or recording with TOOL he's playing Jazz. As you can imagine hes played WAY more Jazz than rock the last 14 years

I'm over here in love with the conversations you have on this channel! The fact you understand Jung, shadow work, and alluded to altered states of consciousness would have gotten me to subscribe if I hadn't already! I never see these kinds of discussions in reaction channels... hell I barely see them outside of grad school (I'm in a MA counseling program right now on depth psychology). You guys give couch gang a while new meaning cause I feel like we're in therapy right now lol! Keep rockin' groovin' and loving life y'all!
🙏🏽 wow thank you for!! That’s an amazing compliment and let’s us know we’re headed in a good direction with all this.
Yeah, you guys teaming up in figuring out the meanings got me to his the sub button on this song
The artist is alex grey . He is friends with the band. Very talented artist
Lex is gonna love the scream in The Grudge.
It’s awesome how quickly y’all were catching onto the lyrics. I pride myself on being educated about philosophical ideas like this, yet I had no idea what this song meant the first 20 times I listened to it. I had to painstakingly dig for answers before I fully understood it. You two are incredibly smart, and I thoroughly enjoy listening to your lyric analyses. Keep it up! Much love!
Always has been and still is my favourite TOOL song, since the 90s. Glad you like it.
I want to see you react to Right in Two.
YES
YES!!!!
YESSSS THIS SONG PLEASE!!! MY NUMBER 1 FAV!
“Lateralus” is one of their best songs... “Vicarious” is great too. ✌🏼
I did not expect to find a Jungian discussion on a reaction video, but I shouldn't be surprised when it's Tool. I just found you guys, and really appreciate the depth you bring as well as just the genuine response.
My thoughts, exactly!
There is a vid of kids doing this song and its totally awesome
From the O'Keeffe Music Foundation, it's one of my favorite vids on UA-cam
SPIRAL OUT, KEEP GOING
Tool Army here for ya :)
I’ve watched all your videos and now you are getting into my favorite band of all time! Don’t stop!
I found Tool in 93 (my friend let me borrow his cassette). I was very sheltered musically and I discovered Pantera and then Tool soon after. Listening to Tool was such a profound experience for me I thought I was doing something wrong by listening to it. And trust me if my parents would’ve found it they would have definitely thought I’d done something wrong. Pantera, Tool, Marilyn Manson, and Korn opened my eyes to music beyond what I was force fed and I owe my eclectic taste in music to them
This is one my favorite Tool songs. Their instrumentals and lyrics are on another level. 🔥
I love watching new tool listeners. You two beautiful people are awesome!!! I suggest the next song should be lateralus by tool. The lyric video with explanation . I love your videos !!!! Welcome to the best rabbit hole to ever exist . be blessed
All right, first of all...you guys are going to blow up. That much is immediately clear. I usually can't stand reaction videos because you either have to sit through people pretending to like something that they clearly hate, or they've already heard the song and are pretending to hear it for the first time.
You guys are honest, genuine and likeable. That's the recipe for success and I expect to check back in a few months from now to see you hitting 250k subs.
Also...please do Tool "Reflection".
Disposition reflection triad ;)
250k & 2 (😅😄) has been the figure floating around in my head as well upon stumbling across these cosmically beautiful, radiant, celestial beings of love, compassion, and a top tier thirst for knowledge and ultimately unadulterated truth*°~☆ Furthermore more their ability to describe and articulate complex topic matter in a near seamless fashion is in a league of very few! Keep up the great wurk and may the cosmos bless you for creating a conduit that brings light into a world plagued with so much darkness will also inevitably save more lives*°~☆ 💚👽💜😇💜👽💚
Check out cam and Kay I'm not sure what they have heard but the live streams were fun to talk to them
I'm watching this rn, and from going from one video of theirs to the next-- they added 100 subs.
Why do you think African Americans know all these rock bands? Do you not realize most African American families listen to RnB and Funk music? You sir are just ignorant by saying reactors are faking it. Not everyone in the world was brought up the way you were. One dude even put up a picture of his GOSPEL parents saying that he wasn't even brought up around rap (he was african american) because people are so ignorant saying shit like "he is black how does he not know hip-hop? this dude is faking" The fake reactors are more likely the newer ones coming out as soon as they found out reaction channels are getting views. The older channels (who now know a lot about rock and metal) were the realest ones because they didn't get the views people are getting today, they just did it because they wanted to record their journey.
He’s like , “ the poetry is mind boggling “ she is like, “ I love that Shadow Jam” . :) like your channel guys. Keep it up!
I went to a catholic school and we had this signature called religion. In 4th or 5th grade, I remember we had this teacher that often made us do a "relaxation" exercise that was like a form of meditation with some random music and him guiding us through it. I often just used that time to have a nice and cool nap. But I remember one day I decided to do the exercise and really took it seriously. I reached a point in which, with my eyes closed, I could totally see some color waves (mostly green waves over a black background, but also some blue and yellow ones), extremely vividly, and they somewhat followed the rhythm of the music that was playing on the background. I can't remember what song it was. But I remember those wavy colors, making fractal patterns and other weird stuff. It was magnificent. I think I never managed to reach a state like that with music until I discovered Tool. I think it was while listening to Reflection that I reached that state for the fist time in years and now I can easily do it with Tool and other groups. Never tried DMT or any other allucinogens while on it (though I'm curious about it).
Tool has a lot of songs that will spur conversations and have the intention on being introspective. U will not be disappointed the more u dive into their catelog.
this has recently become my anthem due to a lot of hard work and personal growth - instead of being focused/chased by my shadow and picking at the scabs of what troubles me, I choose to live and to love, and be my full self :)
TOOL strikes again! Your eye and your mind have been opened! LOVE IT
Tool Sober live I was live at It what a concert young ones !! Powerful need to see !! Oh yeah Brad Is a rocker to he likes Tool come on He's a rocker !!! welcome to the club Brad !!
I'd love to see your reaction to the series of songs about Maynard's mother Judith, especially Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days.
Yes.
Or Judith, from Maynards other band, A Perfect Circle
It would be a long video but it would be cool to start with jimmy then do Judith and end with wings for Marie and 10,000 days. Get the whole story across those songs.
Didn't have to scroll long to find this. Hoping enough of us recommend it so that they have a chance to get to know Maynard a little better.
It appears we’ve got two new members in the Tool Army. lol. Great reaction guys. When listening to a Tool song try to be thinking how each instrument is providing and developing the composition as a whole.. for example the bass line is basically what’s holding everything together and else is moving all around it changing and growing much like in the lyrics of the song itself. As you get to the outro there’s a meter change then Danny brings in this beast of a drum section sounding like someone beating down walls to get out, and finishes with just one time pounding instead he’s hammering on one drum Tom which would loosely be your mind freeing itself from itself. Anyway.welcome ✌️
Man shes a maynard fan.. Just a total keeper!
This song is my favorite to hear live. If you've never been able to experience Tool (and this song!) live, I think you definitely need to try! It's an out of body experience like none other!
Before COVID (if we can remember back then) my lady and I went to a show for the most recent tool album and hands down the most incredible and mind blowing musical live show. I strongly recommend everyone seeing them live once in your life.
Same dude……my wife and did as well with Killing Joke.I had seen them twice in the 90’s but man this time they absolutely blew both of our minds. You really have to see Tool live to truly understand the power they bring.Monster of a fucking band
Although it’s cool to watch people listening to Tool, just simply immerse into the music. You can slice it, dice it and bisect it anyway you wish...but Tool pushes boundaries. Tool is a matrix of the most beautiful and intense music where no other band in the world can compare.
Yeah they're pretty good. Some good tunes. Good rock band.
In my opinion and I am a product of the best rock era ever I was a teenager in the seventies and I started listening to pink floyd when I was eleven years old and I feel that Tool is the best rock band in this modern era because there's no other rock band doing anything like Tool is doing I think that the bands today needs to study the roots of rock and the blues
Bravo to tool and to carl jung, and to brad & lisa is absolutely beaming!!!!!🥲
Made me all warm and fuzzy inside when she felt it at 5:15ish mark she has started down the rabbit hole I have been a fan of tool since the undertow album and its been one hell of a good ride
I LOVE the fact you guys are doing a Tool video. It’s obvious to see that Lex is a true fan of rock music.
I am so happy that you both got a lot out of this song. Lex jamming to the heavier parts and Brad's dissection of the lyrics to try and understand were great. This song is about chromosomal evolution by stepping through your shadow to the next level.
The ending of this song will blow your mind live. If you ever get a chance to see them live….do it. 🤘🏻
It's insane how through watching you guys react to one song, I can see how simular our consciousnesses are. It's crazy, how people all around us are diving into these concepts which were basically taboo before. Music is magic
I’m glad you guys like it . She got so excited .
Welcome to the depth of Tool. Enjoy the ride.
I open my 3rd eye about 6 times a year , and yea it opens your mind and everything so serene , peacefull for them 10 to 12 hours , and listen to tool the whole time
I love how the two of you had very different experiences during the song, and both were precisely how you should experience a Tool song, personally. :)
Also, in a metaphorical way, solitary confinement is appropriate. It's a deep look inward.
Brad- What I learned from Jung and the shadow self was to look inward, what do you think? Lex- MY SHADOWWWWW!!! Let her listen to the music man shes feeling it.

Definitely check out the cover of this song from a high school musical group where the lead singer is a 14 year old girl. They crush it, every instrument and vocals, and it’s filmed so well. It has 24mil views and by O’keefe Music Foundation. It’s amazing, almost better than original with her vocals.

I think both of you will become huge fans of TOOL and want to see them in concert the next chance you get. Their songs are all deep in meaning (even if meaning is up for debate) and I can tell that you guys are into that! Any song could be your favorite at any given moment. ✌️
Dude is so nice watching someone react to this song that knows what the Shadow is
One of the best reactions I've seen to this incredibly complex song! You guys definitely just earned yourselves another fan who will be constantly checking for your incredible reactions. Keep up the good work and know the Tool Army will be here for your journey!
Its fun watching yiu guess through the meanings waiting for that moment when you see it completely.
Great work guys, keep going and spiral out. Peace
You guys were very close and I liked what you were thinking. If you didn't know Tool wants their songs to be interpreted in whatever way that connects to you. Even when Maynard has written a song like this about a specific thing it's fine to take it how you take it. 46+2 is the next step. Wow. Idk anyone who have ever realized that (obviously the info helped) most of my friends just love the song but could never even start to comprehend it. That's Tool though. They go deep and Maynard will drop words you won't hear in any other songs or of life in general. Juxtaposed. I have never heard anyone used that in any convo. You guys are great at breaking things down and you are going to live the Tool rabbit hole. I wanna see reviews on Lateralus, Schism, Undertow, Parabola, ect, ect. If you started from their first album and went in order you'll clearly see the evolution and what separates them from other bands. They don't have 3-4 min radio hits. Tool is coming 5-7 min. And it's fine because you don't want it to end anyway. They also focus on the music. Most bands are about a catchy riff and chorus because they want the Rock Star life. Maynard doesn't care about that nor do the other guys. I'm sure they're grateful to not have to worry about money but they weren't blasting speedballs and doing lines of groupies. They are a 4 piece band as Maynard's voice is definitely an instrument. Danny Carey is the best drummer ever and ever will be. Justin is the king of bass. We all love some homeboy from Rage (super brain fart) and his wild ass guitar but he couldn't shine Justin's shoes. Opiate and Undertow are very hard and heavy and then Aenima is where you see a leap, Lateralus is a masterpiece and 10,000 days is magic. Fear Inoculam is F ing amazing as well. If you listen to Undertow then The Pot and then Wings for Marie you wouldn't know it was the same band. If you threw in a 3 libra's and finish it off with a classic Maynard scream you would be like htf can he sing in so many different ways and he also has the best goosebump popping screams. I really want one more two disc 20-24 song Tool album that drops in a few years, they do some massive touring but not 50 shows in 55 days, but a good 40 arena's a year all over the world for a couple of years before calling it. 6 albums isn't enough. I went on Tool tangent FFs. Point is, I am subbed and hats off to you two.
I love y’all’s mental. And Lex is BEAUTIFUL.
46 and 2 is the next progression of our chromosome set when we have transcended what we are now. It's just ahead of us.
The jab is to stop that metamorphosis?
That's bullshit. This is pseudosience and has no scientific foundations.
@@loicdelcourte9423 maybe so, maybe not. That's still what it's about
@@damiondifranco2967 I'm not denying the signification of the lyrics, only their relevance.

I absolutely love that you guys are diving into ALL kinds of music. I feel like this song is telling you to change and evolve into the best version of yourself. In order to do that you kinda have to pick yourself apart and, in a way, turn yourself inside out to work on bettering yourself.
Love watching you two peel into the words as well as dig the music. There's a lot to get into, and if you get a chance, see them live! Especially these days it's a really diverse crowd of music fans, and amazing live with crazy video.
I gotta say, I'm happy I ran across your channel, I too have done shadow work and when you mentioned the muscle twitches, it made me feel better it wasn't just me. When you go through individuation it's a complex process and the way you view people really does change, in my case I've become much more patient and polite with people and have become much better at reading their actions. You both had amazing insights into the song, I've subscribed to your channel and will check out some of your other videos. Joined the Couch too, I'm not super into discord I'm rather asocial but I do use it sometimes.
I've seen these guys live more than any band I like 25 year tool fan here lol
You really should review a perfect circle, disillusioned
This is the best reaction I’ve ever seen from anyone period! Great breakdown of the song and I love your guys interpretation! 🔥
I really enjoyed watching you two. As an older person, Im not keen on all the cursing and vulgarity that a lot of people use on this platform, thank you for having the character to comment in a civil way. That being said, I also enjoyed listening to both of you try to figure out what the song is about. Thank you. Plus, you both are very lovely.
As a long-time Tool fan who has gone down this particular song's rabbit hole MANY times in my life, allow me to share my two cents on the song title and (Tool's singer) Maynard James Keenan's lyrics. Bare with me here - I'll try my best to only give the necessary background info and contexts along with the full explanation, hopefully without going on any side tangents. The numbers 46 & 2 refer to Drunvalo Melchizedek's chromosomal evolution theory of three stages of modern human development ranging from ancient tribes with 42+2 chromosomes who are harmoniously balanced with nature but lack individual self-realization, to the vast majority of modern humans with 44+2 chromosomes who have lost their inherent connection to nature and each other but are capable of limited self-realization (a pretty shitty deal, existentially), and ultimately to the high-evolutionary mutants with 46+2 chromosomes who are capable of reconnecting to the universe while also having full awareness of thier unique self and the ability to perceive all true reality while actualizing their full potential as individuals (like a superhero or demigod - maybe like Buddha or Jesus, or perhaps L. Ron Hubbard? Who knows). An interesting concept at first glance, but just plain false after a brief review of biology, genetics, or evolution will prove. However, even though It's easy to debunk, it still serves a major purpose in the context of the song's lyrics, for there is more to the song's meaning than New-Age pseudoscience. There's also Jungian psychology, which you're obviously familiar with. So I'll explain how the title is just a clever shorthand to be used as an effective metaphor for real personal growth, Self-actualization, and even physical or physiological improvement that can be interpreted as a metaphor for ontogenetic evolution. By the way, if you combine Jung's integration of the shadow for individual psychological and spiritual growth with the (since disproven) Melchizedek theory of physiologically and phylogenetically climbing from a current state of "disharmonious" 44+2 chromosomes to a higher state of evolution (46+2, and thus self-awareness and self-actualization with higher degrees of spiritual and dimensional perception), you get the premise of the lyrics - something I probably should have pointed out off the bat. Anyway, the most interesting aspect, I think, of Maynard's lyrics comes more from Jung than Melchizedek in that you cannot fully grow as a person in general or reach your maximum potential without acknowledging and *working* to fully integrate The Shadow from the unconscious into concioussness, and rather than trying to destroy it (an impossible task) or repress it (as The Persona and society would demand you to do), instead incorporate it into your Ego as an equal aspect of who you are, while also doing the same with the Collective Unconscious, thus fully realizing yourself and the world around you (self-realization), and now *working* to successfully become and exist as someone attuned to The Self (Self-actualization). Using Melchizedek's false theory, this complex and rigorous psychological and spiritual path of growth and enlightenment can be easily summarized by the pseudo-ontogenetic metaphor of *"46+2"* as a sort of shorthand for a theoretical formula for progression [42+2, 44+2, 46+2]. Much like how in music theory and composition, chord and harmonic progressions and concepts can be summarized by numerical representations, such as the 12-bar blues as consisting of I, IV, and V chords is expressed as I-I-I-I, IV-IV-I-I, V-IV-I-I (or in Arabic numerals, would be expressed as 1-1-1-1, 4-4-1-1, 5-4-1-1). In this sense, *46 & 2* is just metaphorical code (shorthand, really) for the higher Self as theorized by Jung, or even an ideal state of being through a genuinely transformative physical or physiological process of growth (somewhat ontogenetic, but not really) and is thus capable of retaining meaning and significance even after Melchizedek's pseudo-phylogenetic theory is disregarded. The hidden key to remember is that such a leap of concioussness, or indeed, any great leap in one's perception and abilities and Self-actualization, requires an enormous amount of commitment and constant work and mindfullness. It's difficult and unpredictable and draining and incredibly complex and full of unknown risks and sacrifices, without any known timeline or length of duration or guarantee of success, which requires a significant and unwavering supply of sheer faith as well. So to summarize that process so cleanly and easily understood as a pair of numbers is quite brilliant on Maynard's part, even if it was derivative of Melchizedek, who I'm almost positive Maynard never actually took seriously when it came to his theories on chromosomes and evolution. Now, Sacred Geometry, the subject of most of Melchizedek's work, on the other hand, is a different story for a different Tool album...
Lovely explanation.
You guys seem cool AF. PLEASE REACT TO THE TOOL SONG LATERALUS.
One of my favorites by Tool, and there are so many. Two of my favorite things in life, music and things that make me think 🤔 Tool always, always delivers 💯💰🛎 super blessed to have seen them live 🙏🏼❤️😭
This is one of my favorite Tool songs that I've felt I've understood intuitively, but your deep dive into it got me seeing so many more layers and dimensions to it! (And it's giving me insight into parallels with my therapy process, which involves hypnotherapy and regression and "picking off scabs" and "softening the armor" and all that. It so happens that my therapist is also a huge Tool fan-go figure! -which was just a happy coincidence, not like it was in his bio or something!) Anyways, thanks for that really insightful take-you guys are awesome!
