    Tool's first 4 albums weren't released with lyrics. Back then there wasn't internet like now, so you couldn't look them up. I feel that's the best way to take it in for the first time. Reading lyrics distracts from the initial experience.

    • @MusicForTheSoulReactions

    • @questionme2
      @questionme2 2 місяці тому +2

      @@MusicForTheSoulReactions
      I think a nice compromise would be reading the lyrics first on their own to get an idea what the song will be about. But then put the words down and just listen to the song as a whole. The vocals in Tool are meant to be a part of the song and not the focal point. But it’s good to go back to the lyrics and think about their meaning after you’ve heard them integrated in the song.

    • @shangobango77
      @shangobango77 2 місяці тому

      Honestly, I would just pass on reading the lyrics at all. Part of the experience is interpreting them for yourself.

    • @tomwiththeweather247
      @tomwiththeweather247 2 місяці тому

      @@shangobango77 agreed. After listening for years, and then finding out the actual words, turns out I was right all along. And as I grew, the meaning changed as well.

    • @Spudz76
      @Spudz76 2 місяці тому

      Meh, it takes at least five listens to get acclimated to the majesty of each song anyway, one time per instrument focusing on each separately (bass, guitar, drums, and lyrics-as-melody) and then lyrics-as-words. It somewhat doesn't matter which order. And then the bonus is once you get intimately familiar with the basics you will notice more subtle surprises, since Danny has MIDI pads that can be any sort of sound and he'll drop little morsels in. And the guitar (Adam) and bass (Justin as of this album and later) use lots of odd effects so they throw spices in as well. Sort of like watching a good movie a bunch of times and noticing some intentional hidden thing in the background on the tenth revisit.

Being a musician myself who is also extremely nerdy I have a lot of favorite songs, but that one’s up there for sure.. and just for future reference the guy’s name in the band who plays drums. His name is Danny Karrie, and I am a drummer myself and I use the same kind of sticks he uses.. because they’re his signature sticks and that man is known as the human octopus because he can literally do things simultaneously that sound humanly impossible. he is definitely in my top three favorite drummers of all time.! Welcome to the TOOL Army! Spiral out! I would recommend: Lateralus, Pnuma, and the live Pneuma Drum Cam, and Descending…in that order. Enjoy you journey!

    They manage to sound even better live for the whole time. HOWEVER, keep listening to their studio tracks because there are very few worthy live videos. The Danny Carey drum cam video and the Sober live are the only two I'd recommend at this point. You have endless studio tracks to explore. Cheers.

    Tool is real simple. Anyone (Bass, Guitar, Percussion, Vocal) can take the melody, anyone can take the harmony, anyone can take the rhythm. Polyrhythms are the norm. Time signatures are whatever they need them to be (and good luck counting those out). Key changes, sure (although Drop D is a particular favorite). All 4 of the band members are masters of their craft.

    Check out Lateralus, Right in two, Pneuma. Lateralus came out in 2001. Right in two in 2006 and Pneuma in 2019. It took them from 2006-2019 to come out with another album. Dive deeper my friend, you will not be disappointed. Genuinely enjoyed your reactions to Tool so far and look forward to more!

      Also I’ve seen them live 3 times and it was nothing short of amazing. Every. Single. Time. When and if (highly recommend) you check out Pneuma, watch the drummer view that they did with the drummer, Danny Carey. That’s his name, not Jimmy 😂 but good job for trying there bud! Definitely gonna be checking out some of your other videos for sure!

    Followed these guys since I saw them in Atlanta in ‘96. Two windows here for me. Chromosomes (46+2) and evolution, and Psalms 46:2. Psalms 46:2 in the King James Version of the Bible says, "Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea". The CD case had a picture of California falling into the ocean (AEnima) and the Bible verse filled that equation as well.

      Well, five albums and an EP before that. By technicality the EP wasn't long enough total play length to be classified as an "album" but who cares about rules. They have 6 major releases and Salival which is sort of a box set of alternates and a couple otherwise unreleased things. Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus, 10000 Days, and Fear Inoculum. Technically there was an even earlier EP "72826" which is a bit more of a demo tape with early versions of stuff that went on the other releases in finished/polished form, but it wasn't a wide release like by a label.

    Bear with me a second-
    Drummer, Danny Carey is currently touring with Steve Vai, and 2 members of (one of the cool versions of) King Crimson, Adrian Belew, and Tony Levin -(if you like bass, wait til you get a load of the Chapman Stick).
    King Crimson is one of the 1st 'Prog' bands.
    Anyhoo, listen to 'Elephant Talk' then, after that, i double dog dare you to check out 'Indiscipline '

    Love how you said it keeps evolving. Google 46 and 2 theory. A very interesting read. Will continue to blow your mind and when you go back and listen to the lyrics and song overall, you'll have a whole new appreciation for it! Anyways cary on and strap in for one wild ride! Spiral out. Check out Lateralus next and check it out after your first listen as well with google to give you an idea of the song structure and everything!

    Yes still touring and in their 60s now if you watch Danny Carey’s drum cam of the song Pneuma realize that effort is just for one song and he still has 2 hours of playing to go!
