This is a philosophical interpretation on modern news media and the psychological impact of sensationalism in modern society. We are getting a dopamine boost from the feeling of safety while watching others suffer. The news and media capitalizes on this. It is why disaster and horror are such popular genres. The band isn't supporting suffering in the song, but rather pointing out the brutality of modern culture.

I think Maynard is saying that we live comfortably through entertainment so we don't have to live in discomfort. Afraid to take risks for fear of failure, or worse... Death! Therefore providing meaning to the "much better you than I" I could be wrong lol.
Yeah, news of tragedy/violence/bloodshed is what sells, but not because ppl want to do anything about it. It sells because we can feel bad for a second, then change the channel and quit thinking about it. It's entertainment.
he's also speaking to our willingness to endorse the violent enforcement of social norms, and atrocities we endorse around the world by upholding this current empire. It's easier to glorify war and violence when you're far from the front lines.
Insofar as I understand, this song is a critique of modern news media and how they sensationalize, profitize and get people addicted to the idea of violence. They prey upon the innate human evolution so that people can vicariously experience horror from the safety of their own spaces. And now we go to commercials once you are significantly primed to buy.

He graduated in 1987. After graduation, he went to work at Rick Lazzarini's Character Shop. During the next two years, he worked on the TV show Monsters. It started in the early 90s. Kids watching the Gulf War on TV daily, like it was sport. "I like to watch the war. I like to see us winning". This kind of vicarious pleasure is appalling. Tool had the balls to write this song coz it is meant to offend you.
Tool goes from your favorite band to "the best band in the world" when you realize that despite all members being masters of their craft, Tool is a Danny Carey vehicle. I think this guy already gets that...
To a layman who doesn’t really know their music, when you show it to them you say “if you aren’t sure what the deal is just focus on the drumming.” It’s the piece that any normy can grasp as insanely good. Other than that, I’d have to disagree. They are all incredible and become greater than the sum of their parts. But yea Danny could be the gateway for the band that gets peoples attention because he clearly stands out immediately as special.
in truth, the best way to listen to Tool is literally in order of every song released. it’s pretty much a journey of self. Early Tool albums didn’t have lyrics in the album art, and looking up lyrics online wasn’t like what it is now; meaning, the internet really wasn’t a thing for us until Tool’s 4th album. They didn’t want people to read lyrics and infer meaning. And also, they didn’t want anyone to feel like their interpretation was ‘wrong’. I loved that. Because i am now 45 and hearing Tool in a new and different way every day of my life. Great vid, friend
The song is about how people love to watch bad things on TV, the news specifically. Why don't you just admit it! People slow down to watch an accident on the freeway.
they aren’t superficial, they aren’t manufactured, they protect that band/name in a way that should be studied. the lead singer has other projects and when he is interviewed about them he is candid; when Tool comes up, he is guarded. I love Tool, always have for over 30 years now. This is one of there best. What's the heaviest you're willing to listen to though? Your energetic reactions to some crazy sounding music would be a good watch.
I never hear someone say, "Oh, this sounds like Tool". I hear, "People who like Tool would like this too...". Tool has their own sound that nobody else even tries to directly replicate. The song is a criticism of the media presenting these sorts of topics and images to the world and how it's human nature to slow down to watch the train wreck out the window. There is some of that appeal in every one of our reptilian brains out there even if we are better people to resist it. I really hope you continue the Tool journey, I have been a fan since 94, and really enjoy people reacting to their music for the first time. Also, please either have the lyrics up or look at them after as you did here. None of their songs sleep on lyrics, and you will be missing out if you don't see them. The lead singer has a pen that won't quit and also sings for 2 other bands with similar lyrical quality, but you will figure that out eventually. :) Which, I hope to also see you get to in time.
The song is about our need to watch destruction and mayhem to feel better about our own lives. Whether it's fail videos, car wrecks, shootings, etc. "I need to watch things die from a good safe distance. Vicariously I live while the whole world died. We all feel the same, so why don't we just admit it"
Loving these reaction videos. This song is mainly about when the US was in a war with the middle east after 911 when CNN had live broadcasts live from the battle ground. We were all watching the war 24/7 for months.

Great reactions to TOOL, don’t always take MJK literally, he’s a Genius! My daughter and I have seen them 5 times over the years, Greatest Band Ever!! Spiral out
All of 10000 days besides the title track has very groovy and bouncy instrument work. Danny’s work on the toms in this song is probably my favorite in heir entire discography fir example coming up here at 11:26. Every song on this album is napalm. This used to be the second radio single from this album and it was the only time you would ever hear Tool on the radio besides Sober and The Pot because it’s a buffet of what Tool does - excellent drums, excellent lyrics, vocals, high gravity guitar and groovy bass. It was insane at the time too you wouldn’t hear any other 7 minute song on the radio, period.
So glad you're open to the rabbit hole. You are wise to realize it's about experiences. Broadly and in general T00L's oldest stuff is much shorter and angrier than their newest stuff, so depending on your mood you can keep finding more to enjoy. Thankyou!
have you listened to ÆNIMA yet? Or Prison sex or Sober or one of my all time favorites Lateralus? if you do listen to Lateralus you should google (fibonacci sequence) first, if you don't know what that is. it really displays the genius that Maynard is.
I started listening to Tool when I was 16, and I was late to the party then. I'm now 42 and they're still selling out tours and releasing some of their best music. Think about that timeframe. Enjoyed your reaction!
vicarious honestly is one of my favs.... i know its about humans need to see bad stuff happen..but it also reminds me of forensic files... one day i wanna do a cool video of synchronized clips from that show that match the lyrics...as the song plays....
You hit the nail on the head: there is not one track that sounds the same. Pnuema is a masterpiece, especially the drum cam if you want to see the Octopus (Danny) at work 🐙 loving the reactions!
With Tool, YOU really should listen to the entire album, but you can listen to any song, and undoubtedly, you will like 99%. The same could be said for MJK's other bands: Welcome to the Tool Army, but you don't join it. It joins you
You MUST listen to Descending by Tool. It's another totally different sound. It's actually really beautiful and atmospheric and builds up into a monster, with its tribal rhythmic feel in the middle section. It sends shivers down my spine.
Tool has 51 songs and almost all of them are masterpieces. Even there good songs are better than most bands best. Has someone told you that the band creates the music first and then gives it to Maynard to write the lyrics?? Crazy.
Perfect Circle has some excellent songs as well...yet they are quite different than Tool is. Same thing with Puscifer (which tbh, I have not listened to all that much.)
You NEED to do a reaction to the Danny Carey drum cam video for Pneuma. It is absolutely mind-blowing to watch him play. Just look up: Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT) Great stuff my man, love watching people get into Tool - like you said, every song is a different experience!
“This is the best tool song I’ve ever heard” - me growing up in the 90’s every time I heard a new tool song.

Gotta do The Grudge next
So glad you're open to the rabbit hole. You are wise to realize it's about experiences. Broadly and in general T00L's oldest stuff is much shorter and angrier than their newest stuff, so depending on your mood you can keep finding more to enjoy. Thankyou!
Something tells me, you would LOVE the drum solo in 46&2
Yes sir today is a GREAT DAY 💯💯
I think the lyrics are about how are shadow is appeased vicariously through the violence and chaos in the news as entertainment.
have you listened to ÆNIMA yet? Or Prison sex or Sober or one of my all time favorites Lateralus? if you do listen to Lateralus you should google (fibonacci sequence) first, if you don't know what that is. it really displays the genius that Maynard is.
And Maynard/Lead singer does that layering internationally! And Next Lateralus or Schism.
Welcome to the army, bro. There's enough room for everybody.
Definitely need great ear gear to truly appreciate Tool
You hit the nail on the head: there is not one track that sounds the same. Pnuema is a masterpiece, especially the drum cam if you want to see the Octopus (Danny) at work 🐙 loving the reactions!
With Tool, YOU really should listen to the entire album, but you can listen to any song, and undoubtedly, you will like 99%. The same could be said for MJK's other bands: Welcome to the Tool Army, but you don't join it. It joins you
You crushing the Tool reactions
You MUST listen to Descending by Tool. It's another totally different sound. It's actually really beautiful and atmospheric and builds up into a monster, with its tribal rhythmic feel in the middle section. It sends shivers down my spine.
To be honest one of my favourite tool songs comes from their first EP. Its called Sweat. Its pretty short but its fun as hell.
58 excluding salival
@@py_a_thonduuude!
Listen to Existential Reckoning album… good time guaranteed 🎉
Definitely Aenima!!! Danny's drums are incredible. And it's also the greatest diss track on an entire city you'll ever hear 😂
that "Stinkfist" music video is telling you to click it and WATCH IT for your next TOOL reaction!
100%!! Each song is a different experience. All their songs are so different. Keep going, spriral out!!!
You NEED to do a reaction to the Danny Carey drum cam video for Pneuma. It is absolutely mind-blowing to watch him play. Just look up: Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT)
Great stuff my man, love watching people get into Tool - like you said, every song is a different experience!
I Think Jay T is ready for "Pneuma" drum cam
This is a song about how we all love to watch shit happen to others
FanTASTIC pick brother !!! One of my all time favs.
