An excerpt from the musical 'Oliver!' performed on the Ed Sullivan show featuring a pre-Monkees Davy Jones as the Artful Dodger - the very same Ed Sullivan show that featured the first U.S. performance of The Beatles, February 9th, 1964! R.I.P. Davy Jones.
would pay anything... everything... anything...everything to be at this show.
Lmclean89 saw this in 64 on Broadway with the same cast. Historic.
This was the same night the Beatles first appeared on American tv!!!
Though before their live Ed Sullivan appearance Jack Paar had a filmed Beatles performance on his show! ☺
Davy said in an interview when saw the Beatles that night backstage, that's when he decided he wanted to do that. 5 years later we had the Monkees
@@alisontopalian8592 Really only two years later.
While Davy’s performance is beyond exceptional… so is that of the young boy playing Oliver. Acting is a talent … and the whole cast had played their roles to perfection
Thanks to Ed Sullivan the TV performances of some Broadway plays are the only visual recordings of the original casts. Thank you, Ed! 😘
I was lucky and saw Davey Jones in this play so long ago. I have to say I never forgot his performance! It was unbelievable!
I did too. It was a class trip when I lived on Long Island in the 60s. We wound up putting on the play in our school.
Me too! And from then on our choir director had me sing Where Is Love any chance she got.
It was the same night that the Beatles were on it.
Me too. In Mrs. Strom's 4th grade class on Long Island in 1964. We took a bus to Manhattan.
No, you did not!
I never knew this was the same show as the first Beatles performance, amazing
Interesting isnt it it! Yrs later davy would be a rock star too!
Yes Davy said he was in awe of seeing the Beatles perform from the sidelines. The girls went crazy.....x
Me either!! And to think girls screamed for him later
Very very cool
DavyJones was a real professiona. He was nominated in this part for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 1963.
I was born in the late fall of 1978. This is the first time I ever saw this performance! I really enjoy it. The little boy who portrays Oliver is adorable and extremely talented! Davy Jones is excellent! The actress portraying Bet is okay but the late Sheila White who brilliantly portrayed Bet in the 1968 Columbia Pictures Brilliant, Classic, Iconic, and Timeless Movie Oliver! was excellent in the role! The actor portraying Fagin is okay, but the late Ron Moody was the best Fagin! The late actor Jack Wild was excellent in the role of the Artful Dodger! Georgia Brown who portrays Nancy is quite good! The actors who portray Fagin's' boys are excellent. The Beautiful, Brilliant, Charming, Delightful, Enchanting, Lovley Extremely Talented and an Extremely Versatile Comedic and Dramatic Artist, Actress, Dancer, Entertainer, Performer and Singer is the Best Ever and One and Only Nancy!
Love the chemistry that Davy and Georgia have on stage during the whole thing :)
Georgia Beth Did they have a relationship?
My Uncle George Priolo was in the cast.Davy stayed at their house in Lynbrook the night they were on this show.
Very cool piece of history Thomas! Thanks for sharing. David was a client of mine.
Oh COOL! Who did he play?
I love how he bows and “artfully “ retrieves his hat! RIP Davy- Love you always ❤️
That was my fave part. He mastered that
Davy watched backstage as The Beatles performed I Want To Hold Your Hand and it inspired him to audition for The Monkees and the rest is history :)
Was lucky enough to have seen the original production when I was twelve. Sensational and invaluable footage thanks to Ed Sullivan whose love for Broadway made this happen.
Incredible nothing ever will be like this again ever Period !!!!!
there was a time when Broadway music was excellent and important. the songs would permeate our lives. now, not so much. I mistakenly thought it would go on forever.
Very True. It actually seems like a whole other planet
Ask any young woman if she knows the song Defying Gravity from Wicked. Most will.
@@dwgrly wow. one whole song!!
Little boy Davy was actually 19 years old here!!!!
Don Diego Vega no. Davy was 19 in 1966 when he was cast for the Monkees.
Those high notes are difficult to reach when your voice has broken.
He was born in 1945 (google it) so I don’t know why Davy had stated in interviews that he was 19 when he got the Monkee gig. The math doesn’t add up🤔
@@yourauntcindy he got the part on the Monkees in 1965. He was born December 30 1945 so 19 when he got the part.
He had just turned 18 here.
I was watching this night. Focused on Beatles but I do remember this. Such a darling! Never changed
Wow Georgia Brown is truly the perfect Nancy. The original and the best. How lucky we are to have this footage! She has oceans of charisma and warmth. Her interactions with the boys are so adorable. She won’t be bettered in this role.
Personally I love Shani Wallis but I can sympathize, Georgia was great! Wish I could have experienced her in the whole part. I read somewhere that one reason Ron Moody didn't come over to New York was that she didn't want him, got fed up with his ad-libbing.
@@kennethwayne6857 this is totally true. Lionel Bart and Georgia were great friends and Bart never liked Ron Moody. Moody and Brown detested each other and Brown was always trying to ruin Moody’s scenes on stage. When Brown went to NY with the show Moody refused to go. When the film came around, Moody didn’t think he’d get the part because he thought Bart didn’t want him (he eventually loved him in the role) and assumed Brown would be reprising her role. Brown also in turn believed she didn’t get the movie role because Moody campaigned against her!
@@fountainchain126 This is fascinating, thanks a lot for your response. Always great to learn something new about one of my favorite shows, but also a little sad to know that two such extraordinarily talented people couldn't get along and perhaps indulged in less than professional behavior.
Strange how lives intersect. 1/4 Monkees and 1/2 Beatles are gone. Glad I met Davy, Mickey, and Peter in the 1980's.
Five legendary artists appeared on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9, 1964: George Harrison , Ringo Starr, Paul McCarthy, and John Lennon. Then here's Davy Jones , later of the Monkees fame. Too bad we have lost three of five of them. RIP George, John, and Davy.
Ringo is kind of a stretch, lol.
We lost Peter too now
@@PapagenoMF LOL!! I know, right!! 😅😅😅
Paul McCarthy must be Paul McCartney's cousin or something. LOL
Don't forget Frank Gorshin.
This is absolutely -Darling! Davy sure had talent, to say the least. The other performers are great also, thank you for bringing this to us
You are welcome Charles. He was a client of mine. I really miss him!
@@BonnieVent You obviously had some talent also! I'm subscribing! Peace & Love.
@@charlesroberts3650 Thank you so much!
Three future rockers in that role: Davy, Steve Marriot and Phil Collins. I'm curious as to whether Davy got Monkee fan mail from anyone who saw him on Broadway.
The boy playing Oliver is incredible
He is amazing!
His name is Ronnie Kroll. He sang another song from the show on an episode of I've Got a Secret in 1963.

Bruce Prochnik was Broadway's original Oliver, but I'm not 100% sure it's him. Does anyone know?
our englewood, n.j. sixth grade class went to see "oliver" on broadway as a class trip in '64. excellent!!
mj99a Wasn't it great growing up in northern Jersey. Best class trips anywhere. Me; West Point, Hayden Planetarium, Empire S.B., The Statue, And countless museums. Loved it all. We saw West Side Story!!!
Ward Sylvester was in the audience that evening and went backstage to meet Davy and ask him to come to Hollywood.Ward managed Davy and later managed the Monkees and was Executive Producer of the show.
Beautiful. What a voice Davy had.Xxx
I noticed how Davy must have had his voice crack on him earlier in life because at the 1:25 mark he should have jumped to the high notes and tapered off to set the mood. I played Fagin in a school version with us students around 12-13 and the music called for close to a half octave jump to walk down the notes and finish right about where the kid comes in at 01:35 .
My guess is that the young boy had trouble taking his cue from where Davy finished if he had gone to the higher note, so Jones hits the last note that sounds an octave lower that the kid used to find his staring note.
Normally a piano or other musician does the intro and hits the starter note , without that you could still sing a note lower or higher but it could mess you up a high note must now be higher and out of your range.
Davy Jones could sing without music because of the ear he had for music, match that to his talent for dancing and slap-stick and it's no shock that he became a Monkee.
Davy would have been 18 at this performance.
Noticed the obvious octave slump, too. Davy was growing up. He could probably have sung it falsetto, but that wouldn't be Dodger, would it? Played Fagin as well at about 33 y.o. Always loved the show since I was a kid back in the ealy 60s. It was a treat to play in it on stage.
He was 18 at this performance. Born December 30, 1945.
He was sooo cute!!
What a talent! Davy shines. I just love his facial expressions!
So wonderful!! I do remember seeing this at the age of 6!!
Davey was a star gone too soon Rip
53 years ago today!
This always makes me smile and somehow secure
They were all so good!
During one of his trips to perform in Epcot at Disneyworld, I was lucky enough to make his birthday cake. RIP David.
What a wonderful memory.
Makes me cry a bit:) I have a friend who looks like Davy in this clip. I want to be friends with Davy at the age he was in this:)
Chaka Depp me 2
I miss Davy sooo much...😔
Davy had so much talent.
He was SO great here!
Wonderful!!!
Beautiful !!
what a delightful clip. thanks for uploading.
Lovely...........!
This is SO special! Thanks for posting!
such exceptional vocal tone.
Those were the golden days.
That's Georgia Brown who played Madame Le Zara on Cheers with Rhea perlman does anybody remember her?
I've seen Davy perform in concert solo twice as well as with Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork nine times. It seemed like his humorous facial expressions appeared the same if not very similar that through the years, he remained recognizable. Davy was also very talented that seemed to come naturally for him--from what I've read, he had the ability to ad lib. From my seeing him live, it was obvious that he truly loved performing. RIP Davy, I'll love you forever.❤
Am crying a wee bit: for good reasons.
Such a showman!
whoa they did a really wonderful job
Hat rolled off perfectly!
Davy stood in the wings when The Beatles performed. He saw the girls going crazy over them and in a later interview he admitted “I’d rather like that!” Clueless that girls would go crazy over him and The Monkees
happy birthday davy!
That was bloody brilliant xxxxx
Thank you for posting this..my mom told me about this...I was a little too young
AWESOME!!!!
Davy Jones was such a talented actor, and also a musician. When he became part of the Monkees years later.
And just to let everybody know, not only for this video clip. But right now I just found a performance of Davy Jones performing his song what are we going to do, I found it right now on UA-cam.
Just type down Davy Jones what are we going to do 1965, so you can see of what was supposed to be the start of Davy's musical solo career. And the release of his album which was entitled David Jones, but of course as we all know until 1966 he became part of the Monkees.
So again look on UA-cam, and type down Davy Jones what are we going to do 1965, and you will see his early career performance from there as well
I have that album! Thank you for this information. 💗
Lo ame; lo amo y amare porcduem Davy Jones. Encantador; talentoso y cercano...
thanx for posting this
Great performance - but did anyone catch this? Ed Sullivan didn't introduce it as "I'd Do Anything" ...Instead, he said, "As Long As He Needs Me" which was another great song from Oliver.
Yes! He did! I noticed that too!
@@rileyburnett720 That's live television for you!
Well Ed Sullivan seldom got things right. He always looked very weird and ill at ease
Georgia Brown actually did sing "As Long as He Needs Me" that night. The tape was just edited.

My sister met him backstage in his dressing room in Cleveland 😌
outstanding from DavyJones and Georgia Brown but he other kids excellent also.teh seamless choreogrpahy of this is an absolute masterclass
Gem!
Davy was a great talent. I think the original Dodger in Lionel Bart's British production was the late , great Steve Marriott.
Yes he was.
The original Dodger was Martin Horsey .
It was a great show to be in .
Que vello recuerdo; que ser más ralentoso y adorable. Lo amaré por siempre
Dang that was a good performance

He had to speak like he was from London, if he didn't they wouldn't have picked him for the role.. he was a natural so when they talked to him after the show he started speaking in him Manchester accent they were shocked... it's a fact because his sisters were talking about it in a interview...
monkeegirl76 Davy4ever Davy was a darn good actor!!
Farrah Teague yes he was!
Georgia said the same thing in an interview. She really thought he was a Cockney boy
Bruce Prochnik as Oliver is so talented and cute. Great songs, awesome performances... amazing show!!!
I think this was Ronnie Kroll as Oliver. Hadn’t Bruce Prochnik left the production by then? Bruce Prochnik was born on November 30, 1948. He was already 15 years old. The boy who played Oliver in this video surely wasn’t 15. See also this: www.masterworksbroadway.com/blog/remembering-a-most-famous-date-in-music/

Great
Love Davy Jones as the Dodger. But after seeing Shani Wallis do Nancy, nobody else seems right.
Georgia Brown was the original and most accurate Nancy. Lionel Bart and she grew up together in the almost exact location of the Dickens novel, and Bart wrote the role and her songs specifically for her voice. She’s like Nancy in the book. Shani is a lovelier, softer, Hollywood Nancy, but not what Dickens or Bart were really about. The person who gets the role in the movie usually wins out. When we think of the Sound of Music we think of Julie Andrews, not Mary Martin. Mary Martin’s performance must have been radically different, but it was written with her in mind.
@@tommoncrieff1154 Julie Andrews was miscast in The Soud of Music! Julie Andrews is Arrogant, Vulgar and Wooden!
I was born in the late fall of 1978. The Beautiful Brilliant, Charming, Delightful

1964 three great things this show the birth of Melissa Gilbert and a forgotten music group I think they might have been called the Beatles or something like that
melissa gilbert? lol she wasn't anyone. Strange person for you to mention.
I wish there were a vinyl recording of Davy singing as Artful Dodger; I don't believe he is on either the West End or Broadway orig. cast recordings. =(
Michael Goodman sang the role on the original Broadway cast record. Martin Horsey on the London cast.
So happy this footage exists. I wonder Davy's age in this and who played Oliver as he looks sort of familiar.
Was this show popular! It was a big hit back then. It does seem, like Gary noticed a while back, that Davy went through a voice change when he was in the Oliver cast. Of course, Jack Wild took over the Artful Dodger role (and did a great job), and the lovely Mark Lester was Oliver Twist.
Mark Lester only played Oliver in the film, not on stage. He couldn’t sing well enough so his songs were actually sung by Kathe Green, the musical director’s daughter.
This is the Broadway cast, with Ronnie Kroll as Oliver.
@@gotham61 Thanks for clearing that up for me, I thought it might be Bruce Prochnik.
@@kennethwayne6857 Kroll had replaced Prochnik on Nov 21st 1963.

MEMORIAL Davy Jones The Monkees Pass Away February 29 1945 - 2012
He was the original Dodger from the Broadway production, but not from the original London cast
Wrong. Jones played the role both on Broadway and on London's West End. "Playing the Artful Dodger in the musical 'Oliver!' Davy Jones rode his success all the way from London's West End to Broadway, nabbing a Tony award nomination in 1963." (LA Times)
No one will ever play Nancy like she did.
Is there a reason he says As long as he needs me when they sung I'd do anything?
I already realized that it was the Lord God who took Davy Jones' life. 🙏
Georgia is gone too. She also died suddenly in 1992. She was 59.
Davey Jones made it on Broadway as the Dodger, but another rocker, Steve Marriot, made a West End cast album in that role. Unfortunately, no film or audio of Phil Collins in that role has turned up.
Correction, Davy Jones was not the original Artful Dodger it was Martin Horsey who passed away in 2016.
I think they mean on Broadway.
@@alisonflaxman1566Yes, Jones was the original Artful Dodger on Broadway, and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 1963.
1:58 - Davy says something to the kid and Georgia scolds him and smacks him - was that part of the act?
I would suspect it was.
Of course it was. That was pure Nancy!
That's called fine acting! So natural you doubted it was part of the show.
Of course it was. Nancy and The Dodger have that kind of casual, comfortable relationship. They’re cavorting and just trying to blow off some steam before things get brutal and deadly, again.
Davy wasn't the original Artful dodger. He was the fourth. Sorry!
However, Davy Jones WAS the original Artful Dodger on Broadway. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 1963.
Did the Beatles see this on the night
I read somewhere that one or two of them were in the wings watching, but can't remember who they were.
pink_sheep 101 Davy watched the Beatles and was impressed by how much the girls loved them.
DJ really could act - and sing (unlike the others). With none of the cutesy-wootsy affectedness of modern child performers. It was also a very creditable Cockney accent, from a Mancunian boy.
Is that the same actress who played Worf's human mother on Star Trek The Next Generation?
Yes, that's Georgia Brown
Wow this is all round so much better (and Soooo much less pukey) than the version in the film!
I find it funny that bet is so young I like how dodger is older than oliver that's the way it was in the novel
Georgia Brown .... Worf's mother on Star Trek The Next Generation!
Guess who also played the artful dodger at the same tme? baldrick , aka tony robinson
I don't know why she kept smacking in the face most of the performance
Because the Dodger’s a trickster scallawag. And they’re just horsing around - just blowing off some steam before their lives become brutal, and dire, again.
He wasn't the original Artful Dodger, but was the first on Broadway.
Davy Jones was good, but you could not beat Jack wild as the Artful Dodger he was so natural
@@miabruni9293Davy Jones was good enough to be nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 1963.

Walter Koenig was chosen for the part of Chekov in Star Trek in part because he looked a little bit like Davy Jones.

The younger singing boy looks familiar too.
