I was able to meet Davy about 5 times (1986-2002) in my life. He always had time to stop for fans and pose for pictures and sign autographs. One of the nicest celebrities that I ever met. I was heartbroken when I heard that he had passed. Been a fan since 1966. Let's get The Monkees into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame already!!!
I also had the pleasure of meeting Davy-3 times. The first time I met him was in early 1988 when he was promoting his book “They Made a Monkee out of Me.” I was 17 then and I got a kiss on the cheek from him. Needless to say, I had the story to tell my classmates for a week. I agree that Davy was a very nice person, very genuine and it was obvious that he loved his fans. I also believe that he had this joie de vivre about him that he showed in his performing and in the way he presented himself. I was shocked and heartbroken when I heard about his passing. I remain grateful for the wonderful memories that Davy has provided me with. I’m glad that he gave you these memories.
For a small guy, he stands head and shoulders above the rest of us in talent stakes. His vocal range and feel for the song is very impressive for his age. In those days, fame had to be earned . Sadly, these days you hardly need any talent at all to be famous.
Such a talent! As a fifth and sixth grader, I was so in love with Davy, as I'm sure were millions of others. He died way too young and even though I never met him, I cried when I heard the news about his death. RIP, Davy.❤
This was a wonderful find. Davy Jones was a talented singer, musician and performer. Who knew from this video that he would become a megastar? I had the pleasure of meeting him 3 times and seeing him in concert many times between 1986-2011. Davy showed a true love of performing and he truly loved his fans. He is sadly missed yet fondly remembered.
Wow.thank you for uploading this video.davy was only 17 years old here.so cute.he was always handsome.very talented sweet and down to earth.davy is missed.i can't believe it has been 9 years since he passed.davy was one of a kind.nice guy.awesome singer actor dad jockey businessman.i wish I could have met davy.i saw him in concert with Peter and Micky in 1986 at their 20th reunion concert. In 2001 Davy did a solo concert at a local music fest here in NWI. Afterwards, he sat under a canopy at a table and greeted the fans. Well, next day he had a great write up in the local paper - I was smack in the middle of a line of at least 500 people, and he stayed till he met every one! Friendly to us all, never got tired throughout. RIP
This is great! Thanks so much. Imagine a Monkee on US TV before any Beatles. This shows that Davy was so much more that a Monkee (as great a band and troupe they were). I wonder if he was on the way to major stage stardom before TV intervened.
He was younger than that because he was 19 when he was signed for the Monkees for 1966. I heard he was 17 here. That fits better with his birthdate of 1945
@@larrywakeman4371 ...He was born at the very end of 1945; December 30th to be exact. That means he was 17 for nearly all of 1963 (when this show aired). Yes, he was 19 two years later when the Monkees was cast and the pilot filmed in November 1965
Thank you so much for uploading this! I love to see performances of Oliver with talented youth. What a great musical! Does anyone know if there is a live recording on vinyl, from the original West End or Broadway that actually features Davy's voice as Artful Dodger?
@@fromthesidelines Of course they do, I understand. I'm trying to find out if there are any recordings on vinyl with Davy's vocals. I don't think there is; he's not on the Broadway or West end recordings that I know of; I was just hoping idk?
The cast of Oliver, with Davy, was on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, the same show with an obscure British group from a city upstream from Manchester. They had a nice career too.
Merv hosted a summer revival of Arthur Godfrey's "TALENT SCOUTS" (also produced by Irving Mansfield, Jacqueline Susann's husband) as Red Skelton's summer replacement that year.
I performed bodyguard duties for him for a performance he did in NYC 15 months before he passed away! His talent was not only still in tact, but he was extremely kind with a great sense of humor! There's also a UA-cam video of him performing at BB Kings in NYC, 10 days before he passed away. His talent remained, even then.
Just a wild shot... Would you also happen to have a nice quality version of "Hair" by The Cowsills that was performed on the Carl Reiner TV special "Wonderful World of Pizazz"? The only high resolution version on UA-cam has a huge, honkin', annoying watermark by "Revolver TV" plastered over it. Thanks in any event.
So cute and adorable, and he even stayed that way! He always had those twinkling dark eyes, and great hair. But the sweetness and charm was there beneath the good looks.

Until Merv came out I didn't realize how tiny he was!
What an absolute doll! It's no wonder Georgia Brown can't keep her hands off him! 😄

How wonderful to see Davy as such an accomplished performer so young !! No wonder he won our hearts ❤
Too cool. I worked in the music biz many years in Hollywood. Ran into Davy at a pub. Had a beer with him. As i said too cool. A star!
I was SO LUCKY to have seen Davy in Oliver. RIP, Dear Davy.
What a treat to see my favorite Monkee at such a young age before the Monkees! Love Davy.
His eyes are so expressive and beautiful. I think that’s what draws people in first, then his talent shines through. Rest in peace Davy.
I loved Davy Jones. A great talent.
Davy appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show February 9th, 1964. The same night The Beatles first appeared.
Introduced by my beautiful talented cousin Georgia Brown.
Beautiful song, great performance, well done young Davy!

Wonderful clip. Who knew he'd be one of the most important singers of the sixties?

One of the greatest talents back then, handsome and brilliant as well !!!!!
Davy Jones has such Command!! He was theatre perfection. He hooks right into my heart. 💔
Ill love Davy forever !I love horses cats and dogs !Davy loved horses like I do !
He had cats also!
This is adorable! He would've won a Tony Award & been a Broadway sensation, if not a Monkee.
I met him backstage after a performance of "Oliver" I was smitten and 13.
He's incredibly talented and I love him
Incredibly talented. What memories!
He was too young to join the Beatles or the Rolling Stones... But he really left a good mark on the world.
WHY would he? HE was born to be a MONKEE forever!
Such a wonderful guy, sorely missed
Nice to see the proper aspect ratio. Thanks for upoloading!

It was The Grassroots.
Brings back great memories of a very charismatic guy. He went on to steal the show as Sam Weller in "Pickwick!"

That is because the US is the GREATESTand the MONKEES are the greatest!
Just love him....
I wish there was a dvd of Oliver w/Davy.
Sweetheart Boy !!
dear heart.
Bloody brilliant county accent!!
It’s like he went from 12 to 21 in four years.
He was 19 when he was on the Monkees in 1966
He was 21! In 1966. He was born in 1945.
He didn't look old enough to have those sideburns.
I remember seeing this when it was broadcast! I was 13 and had such a crush on him. Lol
Georgia Brown, who was appearing in the original Broadway version of "Oliver!" at the time, introduced her "talent discovery" {Davy} to Merv.
A star already?❤️
👍👍👍👍 So cool.
Love this so much!!

Merv Griffith was really good looking
Awwwwwww
17 years old and his voice still hadn't changed yet! Talk about a late bloomer!

Yes. The tracks are posted on UA-cam.

Sure. Any good record shop, thrift store or garage/yard sale has at least ONE "Oliver!" cast album.

My favourite monkee...the beginning of this song he sings is a lip biter. Same spirit as I wanna be free.
So Cute
I didn't know he was in Oliver. Artful dodger. How funny. I love Jones, he was so cute.

I have a newspaper article from back then were apparently 17 year old Davy was dating his co star the 30ish Georgia Brown.
totally cheeky!
I wouldn't doubt it. Knowing Davy
I doubt it.
We're still feeling sorry for Davy Jones, knowing that he lived a short life. 😢
He has the stage presence of a young Wayne Newton.
He has similar singing mannerisms to young Paul McCartney
Love the British accent ~ : )
I don't think his voice had even changed yet. He could sing though.
He may look 12 years old, but he is 18 here.
He was 17.

He had a nice voice, and was one of the favorites of the ladies when a member of the group The Monkeys, sad in his later years.

I think he was a teenager he's singing a song from the movie Oliver
From the Broadway stage production he was appearing in.
I wanted to marry Davy Jones
Who didn’t?
You and me and millions of others. He was a great human being who is missed by many. RIP, Davy. ❤
He was probably my first crush!❤
So cute and adorable, and he even stayed that way! He always had those twinkling dark eyes, and great hair. But the sweetness and charm was there beneath the good looks.
Was Davey full grown here? I think he grew a few inches in his mid-late teens.
No one ever talks about his brief stint playing tambourine in Joy Division
He did that? When, before the Monkees?
@@lonerose99 It was a joke. Because Manchester
naaah i still prefer Jack Wild😅may was more small and younger but
sounds more fun😅
i must admit both guys did an absolutely GREAT JOB😊
What song is Davy singing ?
Where is Love from the musical/movie Oliver...and at the end Consider Yourself from Oliver also.
Manchester is not in the Midlands
I was expecting more people to pick this up....she's from London as well!,nothing existed outside London then!
Few people realize he was 39 years old here.
