      @@blackmore4 I wasn't yet born when the film was released, but I was one of those fans that was first exposed to The Monkees television show through the MTV reruns in the mid-1980s. Before that, I was familiar with the group only through a handful of the songs played on the "oldies" stations. I became a fan because of the reruns, and when a while later I saw the "Head" movie on VHS at a rental store, I picked it up to watch thinking it would be an extra-long version of the TV show. Of course, it was not that, at all. I didn't really know what to think of "Head" at first. I was disappointed somewhat that it wasn't the TV show, but there was something special about it that stuck with me. I now enjoy it as much as the series, but on its own merits.

      I saw him do the same routine on his last 2011 tour with Micky & Peter. I did have some misgivings about him doing such strenuous choreography because he was a lot heavier at that point. Needless to say, he didn't miss a trick and my eight year old daughter was delighted! A year later, we had the radio on while I was making her breakfast and the terrible news of his death was broadcast. She cried all the way to school :(

The technology existed, and this scene would seem to confirm that it was filmed once, as opposed to twice...

      most of us know that, but this is our first opportunity to SEE it. the movie editing this so much you never got to see how much great dancing he was doing. This a first for me, despite my knowing his experience, training and history.
      He wasn't showng up by Toni in this like I expected him to be either... I know she's the superior dancer (superior to most people, not just to davy), but it didn't come across like she was the dancing teacher and he was desperately trying to keep up - instead it was excellent teamwork and he did some improv in it as well!

    I was very impressed by Toni Basil. I had never seen her dance, except in the 1980's video for "Hey,Micky." I really didn't realize how talented she was @the time bcuz that was something of a novelty video & song, so I didn't take it seriously. I guess this is also a bit tongue in cheek, but I couldn't help buy notice how graceful she was. Davy is great, but IMHO, he is doing something just a little below her level. I see her performance as befitting a person capable of being a dancer at the highest level & Davy as dancing at a level quite appropriate for musical theater, but not high enough a level to be a dancer per se. Maybe I would not have noticed that he wasn't quite at that level, if Toni wasn't dancing next to him. Also, I may have no idea what I'm talking about since I am not expert in shoe business. Send the hate if u feel the need. It's just my humble opinion & it's really just a compliment 4 Toni, rather than a put down on Davy, who was awesome her & as a human being during his life.

    Head ended the Monkees

    • @Gambeli02
      @Gambeli02 3 роки тому +2

      The Monkees were a year dead before HEAD.
      First, despite all of his faults, Don Kirshner was the architect of The Monkees musical success. He was fired before the second season. Since the music drove the TV show, that was the first hint of the group's demise. With the second season and The Monkees gaining a crumb of control, both the music and the show turned away from the "bubble-gum" image and made a half-a$$ attempt towards being "hip". That tanked the Nielsen ratings and the show was cancelled.
      HEAD was a last gasp effort from producer Bob Rafelson to make the Monkees relevant to fans seeking other distractions (think in terms of Haight-Ashbury culture). Columbia Pictures gave the film a limited release with virtually no publicity. The disjointed, twice edited, twice released, cult aspect of HEAD only served to pour that final shovel of dirt into The Monkees' grave.
      It can't be lost that, following HEAD, the same production company funded "Easy Rider".

    • @tommyboyindy1157
      @tommyboyindy1157 3 роки тому +2

      @@Gambeli02 : Yeah, “ended” was probably the wrong word. Your term “last gasp” or “the end of” would have been more appropriate. That’s what I meant. It’s interesting how well their early bubble gum pop holds up. Good song writing.

      @@Gambeli02 The Monkees had hits after Kirshner, too, and made albums after "Head." They took the stand for artistic control they felt they had to take to be themselves, which is hardly suicide.

    • @Gambeli02
      @Gambeli02 2 роки тому +1

      @@bobdavis4848 The Monkees have an outstanding catalog of music, but the industry will always argue the opposite. Which is one reason the RRHF, being the political entity they are, will never bring the Monkees into the fold.
      After Kirshner was fired, the Monkees were quite content making their own sound. Headquarters, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., and The Birds the Bees and the Monkees all went platinum and produced a total of three top 5 hits. However, Micky Dolenz fully admited that after Kirshner was booted, overall album sales tanked (Hey, Hey We're The Monkees Documentary, 1996).
      Albums after HEAD, on the Colgems label, none topped beyond 32 on the US charts and none had hit singles that went beyond 56 -- with one exception. On the Rhino label, the single ""That Was Then, This Is Now" in 1986 charted 20. Rhino was the Monkees godsend and is where they caught their second wind of popularity.

      @bobdavis4848 2 роки тому +1
