Nez4Prez This is when he was in Oliver, right?! So probably 16. I think the next year is when his first album was released. Then, at age nineteen, he was one of The Monkees.
This is wonderful to see!!! Davy's first time on American TV!!! Thank You Merv, and Georgia Brown!! Love this!!! Miss him!! He was so talented!!! I feel so proud of him every time I see this!!
Davy was always so amazing at everything. His amazing smile and charismatic (however you spell it} personality made him an incredible entertainer. His baby face made him lovable, and his voice made him unforgettable! I love you, David Thomas Jones!!!!!
Davy Jones was adorable from an early age. However, I never saw him this young before! Also, I'd like to mention that The Monkees TV series was among the first 2 shows that I ever watched. (The other was Lost in Space).
Well, not THAT young. After all he was 18 at the time (she said he was a jockey before he was 'found'). Davy was born in 1945. Does anyone know who played this part on London's West End after Davy? None other than Phil Collins. However, his voice 'broke' and could no longer play the part after 9 months on stage, so had to settle for being a rock star. LOL
He would have turned 18 on Dec. 30, 1963, just over one month before his appearance with the Broadway cast of "Oliver" on the Feb. 9, 1964 Ed Sullivan Show.
Davy was an amazingly charming performer , right from the start!! What a doll! That Georgia woman seemed to be in love with him ! really , who could blame her! ( later on Davy joked that he looked so similar to Dudley Mooore that he could be mistaken for him , but Davy was MUCH MUCH BETTER LOOKING than Dudley Moore...Davy was on a totally different plain !! Interestingly, they both died when they reached the age of 66 ( though for different causes). Davy is terribly missed by his fans and of course his family.
Yes, this is indeed the summer of 1963, when Davy was appearing as "The Artful Dodger" (with Georgia Brown) in the original Broadway production of "Oliver!". He was still a part of the show when they performed a number from that musical the night The Beatles first appeared on "THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW" [2/9/64].
Janet Carlson I'm 63 and never forget that night as long as I live. Like most young Americans it's was all about seeing The Beatles but I was blown away by this bit of Oliver, unforgettable.
I was going to leave a similar remark, but I see you already did. Maybe I can leave this little tid bit of further info. A very young Davy also appeared on a television sitcom called "Farmers Daughter".
he was born to be the singer naturally ..... jesus.. so easy to him........even this film misty ......as you know nothing misty with him and your grandma......interesting......i am also 72 years still love his singing and this song of old usa movie enjoy boy of monkees....... I guess he is British ........ wonderful....forever young this film......actually he passed away...... but i feel he still exist because good moments never disappear as we know.......enjoy ........thank god......this is heaven
In 1990, I saw Davy play Fagin in Oliver! in Miami Beach. The best Fagin ever!!! Too bad he didn't go back to Broadway or the West End. That's where he belonged.
Saw Oliver on Broadway, 1964 as a 14 year old. Georgia Brown, who is in this great Merv Griffin clip, was starring but sadly, Davy was not in the performance I saw. In fact most of the kids who appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, Beatles fame, were replaced due to getting bigger. Georgia was truly incredible and died much too young as did Davy who had one helluva life. Extremely photogenic and never could believe he was only 5'3. This is why I totally love UA-cam!
LOL! Or at the very least, she must have edited the video before uploading it to UA-cam. The formatting of this video is all wrong, presenting "standard" format (as it was originally shown on TV in 1963) as "widescreen," which is what is causing Davy's head to be cropped.
@@ViaticalTree Poor cameraman gets blamed for a UA-camr badly cropping a standard TV picture. Hint for anyone thinking about "reformatting" standard TV images to widescreen: Don't do it. BUT, if you do, don't center the standard image, or what happened in this video will occur. It's safer to push the image upwards as to not make people appear headless. Honestly, though, wasn't "scan and pan" a big enough artistic and aesthetic crime? Please leave videos in their correct aspect ratio.
Monkees debut was in the 1966-67 television season. It only ran in original production on network TV that season and 67-68. He grew up a bit in the next 2 and a half years (63-mid 66). He also wound up getting seen in a few other tv shows (he was under contract with columbia at some point in either later in 64 or by early 65) as they worked to get him some exposure and seasoning in america.
Wow. He doesn't sound like Davey Jones at all, such a higher pitch, and honestly, he voice sounded "better" than when he was in the Monkees, and I love the Monkees.
It sure would have been better at the beginning to not have chopped off the top of his head. I still loved hearing him singing "Where is Love" since he played the Artful Dodger singing "Consider Yourself". I sure will miss him!
Manchester was in the Midlands in the 1960s? It also sounds like his voice hadn't broken here and I'm guessing he would have been probably 17 as he was born in December 1945.
He continued to work in the theatre even as he continued to tour with The Monkees up until his death. He also did solo concerts. He also accomplished his dream of becoming a professional jockey and winning. And he was on the most popular Brady Bunch episode and then again twenty years later for the movie. (With Peter and Micky doing cameos!). And who could forget the freeloading character, “ I’m Reginald, Reginald Fairfield”
Comments about camera work are funny! Of course this a cropped copy of the original so it didn’t air as shown here! Terrible Voice at this age but something dropped for Monkees
I think The Monkees aired in 1965. Can this clip be a bit earlier than 1963, though he may have metamorphised (spelling?) quickly. If it aired in 1965, then who knows when it was taped. Cute video, I enjoyed it.
hang in there Davy. You're going to discover what its like to be the biggest thing on the planet......heaven has him now, our loss.
😢❤
Bless his heart, Davy was born to be a star and now he is among the stars in the sky!
😢❤
Wonderful!! Davy was a natural performer.
Yes, and perfect as a Monkee.
He was 18 when he did this, yet he sang like a 12 year old. A lot happened in 3 years.
Nez4Prez This is when he was in Oliver, right?! So probably 16. I think the next year is when his first album was released. Then, at age nineteen, he was one of The Monkees.
Nez4Prez WOW. 18? His voice doesn’t even sound like it changed.
Yeah, his TESTICLES dropped!
Davy was born December 30, 1945. This was sometime in 1963, so he was likely 17-years-old since he wouldn't turn 18 until right before the new year.
His voice should have changed when he was 13 or so. Can you imagine what it would have been like if he sounded like this when he was in The Monkees?
He was always so sweet...we miss you Davy❤️❤️
This is wonderful to see!!! Davy's first time on American TV!!! Thank You Merv, and Georgia Brown!! Love this!!! Miss him!! He was so talented!!! I feel so proud of him every time I see this!!
Are you his mom? Vocal or acting teacher?
Was Georgia Brown an actress or promoter?
Fantastic performance!!! Just goes to show you that the critics were wrong from the start ! All of the monkees boys were talented!!!!!
Wow! He a true showman! I miss him! Thanks for posting this as it gives us an incredible insight into a rare talent!
Davy was always so amazing at everything. His amazing smile and charismatic (however you spell it} personality made him an incredible entertainer. His baby face made him lovable, and his voice made him unforgettable! I love you, David Thomas Jones!!!!!
Go on Davy, stand up whilst you sing........ But I am standing up.
he was 17 in 1963...he turned 18 in Dec. of 1963
Davy Jones and the cast of "Oliver Twist" were the warm up act for The Beatles on Ed Sullivan on Feb 9 1964.
Love Georgia Brown, Merv Griffin and Davy Jones! All in one show, wow!
Griffin and Jones are both Welsh names.
An obviously special talent! 💕💕
Davy Jones was adorable from an early age. However, I never saw him this young before! Also, I'd like to mention that The Monkees TV series was among the first 2 shows that I ever watched. (The other was Lost in Space).
So talented & Adorable. R.I.P. gentle man.
gorgeous moving song sung with heart by gorgeous Davy Jones :)
That's beautiful...
How confident and poised he was at such a young age.
Well, not THAT young. After all he was 18 at the time (she said he was a jockey before he was 'found'). Davy was born in 1945.

None other than Phil Collins. However, his voice 'broke' and could no longer play the part after 9 months on stage, so had to settle for being a rock star. LOL
Thanks for posting that rarity , RIP Davy.
He had "it" even then. Missing you every day, Davy. I know you are enjoying Heaven.
miss you Davy…
He would have turned 18 on Dec. 30, 1963, just over one month before his appearance with the Broadway cast of "Oliver" on the Feb. 9, 1964 Ed Sullivan Show.
such a charmer
Adorable as all get out. Love this so much!!!

Barry I. Grauman Very interesting bit of trivia Barry, I didn't know that, and I am a Monkee aficionado!!!

A very young Davy also appeared on a television sitcom called "Farmers Daughter".
@@im1who84u And the early Monkees auditions that you can see on youtube were done on the set of The Farmer's Daughter.
miss Davy

Amazing camera work.
29moons -😂😂😂
There’s a much better version that just came out a couple days ago! Look it up!
Love how Georgia Brown threw her arm over Davy’s shoulder as they walked offstage.
Love this so much
His voice was so much higher then! But it shows his talent--he must have been torn. Because he was definitely suited for singing and acting.
Thanks for posting! Davy was such a talent!
Sign this kid up
In 1990, I saw Davy play Fagin in Oliver! in Miami Beach. The best Fagin ever!!! Too bad he didn't go back to Broadway or the West End. That's where he belonged.
David Jones I loved your voice
He was a wonderful talent.
Merv so young and trim and Davy sounded a little like a young Paul Anka.
So wonderful to see! Thanks!
BRO I THOUGHT HE WAS LIKE 13 IN THIS BUT HE'S 17???? THIS IS 3 YEARS BEFORE THE MONKEES???? BRO WHAT???????
Love it! Aww he was (as always) adorable. Thank you!!!
Omg hes so freaking cute. I wanna squeeze him☺️☺️☺️
Sooo adorable & a great performance
Thank you, SIR Davy Jones! May you rest in peace. 🌹🙏🏼
WOW, ole Merv looks soooooo young!
Yeah and knowing Merv he was probably lusting after Davy
What a treasure!!!!!!!!
Wow! How great to see this! What a find! Thanks for sharing 👍😊!
He was also on Coronation Street for few episodes as Ena Sharples grandson
Davy Jones, Steve Marriott, Jack Wild...quite a few talented guys playing Dodger.
Steve Marriott ? really?
@@JimRobinson-colors absolutely. You can find it on UA-cam. An amazing talent.

He was fabulous!!

Didn't he have an emergency appendectomy october1964
He sure does sound very young here.

magazinekitchen This is exactly it. Whoever cut off the top and bottom fitting it to 16:9 need to be punched right in the collar bone.

"Where is Love?" From you, Davy Jones!
RIP Manchester Cowboy...
Gone way way too soon. Only one Monkee left in Micky Dolenz...RIP, you other three!
Saw him do this in nyc 1964
Monkees debut was in the 1966-67 television season. It only ran in original production on network TV that season and 67-68. He grew up a bit in the next 2 and a half years (63-mid 66). No hint that there was bigger superstardom down the road for that young man. As for lovely Georgia Brown...VERY DEEP SIGH
Thank u so much
Davy was so small and cute.....aww
Wow. He doesn't sound like Davey Jones at all, such a higher pitch, and honestly, he voice sounded "better" than when he was in the Monkees, and I love the Monkees.
Wow! Davy Jones was on American TV before the Beatles.
I saw Davy in NYC in Oliver in 1963.
Sweet Davy. Rest in peace.
Very good looking woman....
Such charisma.
He does look like Eddie Munster!!
I noticed Davy's voice was a bit higher than it would be 2 years later.
love davy‘s voice😭😭😭😭
Wow..........
I always thought it would have been great to have seen David in a role on "Downton Abbey".
Well, he was on "Coronation Street", a jolly old British television program.
It sure would have been better at the beginning to not have chopped off the top of his head. I still loved hearing him singing "Where is Love" since he played the Artful Dodger singing "Consider Yourself". I sure will miss him!
Enormous
Interesting that Where Is Love is sung by Oliver Twist in the show, not Artful Dodger.
Davy's first US performance!
Hey. I know this guy. He was on Ed Sullivan the same night as The Beatles first appearence.
Already a chick magnet before what's in store for him in 1966. RIP Davy. Legend.
Cool.
Manchester was in the Midlands in the 1960s?

He may have been a stage star is The Monkees didn't typecast him.
I totally agree, MerleOberon. I think the Monkees changed the trajectory of Davy's life. But Heaven knows, he did very well in life.
He continued to work in the theatre even as he continued to tour with The Monkees up until his death. He also did solo concerts. I've only heard really nice things about Georgia Brown, She must be a great person.
Jimmy King Past tense. I think she passed away around 1992. She was very talented, and obviously very supportive of Jones.
I saw davy and Georgia brown in my first broadway show I love them both [eve gardell]
Judy Garland was a friend of young Davy .
Georgia Brown played Nancy, right? Why didn’t she reprise the role for the movie??
18 year old Davy
