- Steely Dan - Two Against Nature (Sony Studios NYC 2000) This is their fantastic concert in full with the interviews carefully edited out. As a big fan I bought this DVD when it was released and only recently got around to editing out the disruptive interviews. The sound has been carefully downmixed and crossfaded from the DTS multichannel to stereo for UA-cam. Thank you Donald and Walter (any your amazing band) for doing what you do and making the world a much better place for millions of devoted fans. TURN UP this jazz rock party and enjoy !!

Back in my Country in Colombia when I was I teenager, my Steely Dan cassette was the most precious belonging. I used to rewind it with my pencil and I dreamed of coming to America and, I did! I am a U.S. citizen and I feel the groove of his music as I was born here. I love his music.
Welcome new US Citizen, thank you for joining America and for helping to keep her strong !
Si! Es mi favorito también
Keeping it real with stealy dan for 46 years.....
That’s nice 😊
Well, even though Walter is no longer with us, I hope you get to see Donald and the rest of the gang on tour playing all these legendary songs live! I’ve been fortunate to have seen then on numerous occasions. They never fail to knock it out of the ballpark.
Steely Dan’s music is timeless, and a National Treasure!!! 👍🏻🍸❤️😎
Steely Dan was ,is now and always will be one of the best bands ever. R I P Walter Becker
Yes, agree. He played a underrated good Guitar. On the point.
weren't they singing RIP America a lot? But yes.
Zep first followed by the Dan. Light and shade as Page says
Indeed. Their music is on a level of perfection that few can counter.
Steely Dan--like a fine wine. Only gets better & better w/age!!!! ♥
I produced this film and I'm so thrilled you guys get it. Donald & Walter were great to work with but it was painful
Hey !! amazing, love the production style, so Avant-garde - Please tell us more.........hope you dont mind me editing out the talking bits ☺- please tell me its coming out on Bluray ATMOS
It’s too bad the director was trying so hard to be artsy with robot cameras that drop the musicians out of frame or show Walter playing rhythm while Jon is ripping a smoking solo. A little more straight-up direction would have been nice.
Great job. I watch this regularly. Great film and performance. RIP Walter Becker, Ricky Lawson and Cornelius.
And you didn't call me? :)
Lovely Job ❤
Coolest, slickest, tightest, funkiest band ever!
check out Sade…
At the risk of being consigned to old fartdom, Steely Dan sounds far cooler and more wised-up than virtually any music being released today.
Old fartdom feels fine to me...cheers!
No doubt
Yep.
Young people like SD also. I was at a local art supply store & a young woman in her 20's was playing a SD cd. When I said: I really like this music, she said glad to meet someone who likes it as much as I do.
Welcome to Old Fartdom. It's nice around here. People trim their lawns and wash their cars and drink Martinis into the night. Stay awhile.
Steely Dan is perfection....🎸🎶
Ll
He is awesome
I've loved Steely Dan since the 70's....now we can see them any time via the net. In perfect sound. How lucky are we? Once we get rid of the politicians the world will be a much better place.
You hit the nail on the head. Absolutely right. Been thinking this for a while
I was in L.A. for some reason in the summer of 1975 and ended up at a swank party that included a famous Hollywood director. Feeling out of place I bumped into the celebrity by chance in the hallway. Trying to make me comfortable I suppose he asked me how I liked the music they were playing. I simply said that I really loved Steely Dan and he smiled genuinely. "That's the only reason I come to this one every year," He said." The Dan is music for intelligent people " Now here I am today hearing that same song at 67 years old. Bad Sneakers " always brings back that memory. They broke up too soon but as a surprise, they did a quick gig in SC years later... and a friend surprised me on my birthday with two tickets to the beautiful outdoor concert. Now THATS lucky!
❤❤
I'm 68 years old ,and i remember buying my first car in 1976 , and with it a steely Dan cassette" Royal Scam ", loving this band ever since .
1976 8track days.
This band rocked my soul after 4 hard years in the navy... 50 years later we have nothing that compares
U forgot about Prince? Please..
@@brachelleon8333 Comparing Prince 2 Steely Dan? Nothing against Prince, but why would u eat whitefish when u could be having lobster???
Subversive 'under the radar' jazz for the unwashed masses of pop, country, rock & hip hop who had no idea. It's the 'red' pill of music. You're welcome...
Becker & Fagen - Pure Musical Genius!
Well certainly Snarky Puppy is qualitatively perfectly comparable, and there are others.
I remember musicianship in "pop/rock" radio... Steely Dan, Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Ambrosia, Chicago, Queen, Yes, Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat & Tears, ELP...
Steely Dan is one of those bands that will last forever with their beautiful fusion-style compositions. The musical geniuses of the past are in the process of extinction, compared to current bands. . .
Ricky Lawson my biggest drum inspiration.
He gave me his drumsticks many years ago.
R.I.P.
Lucky you! Didn’t know he passed away 😢
I ran into Ricky after the 2000 show in Paris in a bar near the venue. Chatted for a while, he was happy to talk, what a nice guy, what a player. RIP.
WOW, just crossed 1M views (March 2024) mind blown - thanks everyone. Im having a ball reading all the comments.🥰
I was just wondering how it works. When someone plays copyrighted music. don’t need permission of the artist? And also, don’t you owe them a royalty every time one of their songs is played? That’s pretty much standard in the music industry. 500,000 times ouch could be expensive!
@@John-U-Can-Do-It no, that was cleared up immediately on upload, I got a message from UA-cam saying that the owner was happy to have the edited version of the concert uploaded, so its still there. There was no copyright strike, all was good. If there was an issue it wouldnt last a day. Who knows what reeason but it suited all concerned - maybe free new exposure on a forgotten DVD? Its also a factor that im not monetising it, if i had adverts etc, they'd take it down.
You're welcome
always a great pleasure to listen to Steely Dan! .. fan since i'm a teenager.. and will always be.. the best band ever.. top notch music!
I was at this session. My good friend Dana Watson who at the time was working at Warner Bros Records got the passes.. It was an incredible night which I am eternally thankful to Dana... Beyond incredible....
Wow. Tell us more
Yes tell us more! Wow that’s great!
I'll be honest. This is my favorite band so I would really like to hear more about this. Did you see the camera guy bump into the backup singer's microphone during "Deacon Blue"?
70s by far the best creative decade of musical production in a wide spectrum...
I was never a major fan but in the past few years, I have come to more than appreciate this band. Every track just seems to be better than the last. I have always been a Beatles fan and considered their music and genre to be the best. In this set, they are simply the tightest band I have ever listened to. I enjoy music as much or more so than everyone and if you are looking for an OPPORTUNITY to listen to what I now consider the Greatest Band of all time listen to Steely Dan!
Like you I was late coming to the Steely party so enjoy them all the more !! BUT Beatles are still the the Kings of The World !! 🙂
ha I see wacha did there!!@@billsharkey9365
Agree to the fact that every passing day they sound a little better as you DISCOVER one new beat, or tune, or backing vocals or just one of Walter's licks....they just keep GROWING.. ❤❤❤❤❤
Ricky Lawson simply nails the grooves all around.
He was s such a fantastic groove master. I love the crack of his snare! Magnificent!
Terrible loss and only 59.
One of the greats.
Yeah he is really on it..sounds great..probably the best drummer I've heard them with...
Purdie, Porcaro, Gadd...@@SuperQdaddy
I'm 17 and Steely Dan is in my opinion the greatest band of all time. I love a lot of other bands too, but I feel like Becker and Fagen were always a little better overall. There are some really good songs out there, but as a whole band I think Steely Dan is on top. Love from Belgium!
Steely Dan is what happens when amazing talent meets extreme perfectionism. They're a once-in-a-century type of musical endeavor. There are many great bands, but not many at the level of craft-perfection as Steely Dan. They are used by audio engineers around the world to test their sound system setups because of their perfect studio techniques. And after watching this concert (first time seeing a live recording), I can see their live shows are just as tight. Wow
"We forgive you"- Led Zepplin.
@@Mark-gg6iy Not by a mile my friend.
Good choice , I am 57 and you would be correct ! Bad ass musicians , never been done before , session players put together . Don't think it will be duplicated that's for sure.
They weren't a band in the normal sense of the word, but two musicians with vision, and an ear to find the musicians who would help them attain that vision.
MY LORD WHAT A SNARE SOUND. In a concert of incredible audio, that snare drum just stands out as perfection.
I was just thinking how wild it is that they managed to bring their hi-fi fixation on the road and are still one of the tightest sounding groups live. (Well, aside from Don really starting to get old vocally, that's getting rough.)
Totally agree, great sound
I think its too much, excessively for me
It's a bit too thin for me. I like a bit more depth in a good snare sound. It certainly cuts through beautifully though.
Incredible incredible Steely Dan band
Hearty gulping wine!
What a line!
Arguably the best body of work by any band- EVER.
Genius songwriting.
The best Musicians.
Flawless sound and execution for a live performance.
no tours for 20 years, glad I saw em in 07
Yes, the songwriting..some of the best story telling ever
It is crazy how good the band sounds live, so tight. Can’t tell much difference from the studio recordings !
They are all session artist and the the best of those. All are a modern day Wrecking crew!
Damn Straight! AMAZING LIVE
To my pre-teen suburban ears, the sounds of "FM" and "Bad Sneakers" signified urban coolness without end.
Bingo! Well-worded.
No static at all.
@@americas1stfreedom338 Ditto that conclusion.
And the three most beautiful soul sisters ever!
yes
Cornelius Bumpus. What a great name for a Saxamaphone player!
RIP '(
Love forever
Best band and sound ever
My favorite band of all time! Just a great band to listen to! Fagan and Becker were geniuses!
It's been said that they may not be your favorite band, but they're your favorite bands favorite band
Once in a lifetime musicians who will never be duplicated. Live on 70's.
It’s not within my vocabulary to express the feeling I get listening to all your old memories .
Sometimes these magical things aren't something you can explain. Somethings you just have to feel them.
Kevin, Donald and Walter, thank, thank for making the world a much better place! From Argentina
So tight!!!! Donald and Walter could order up the best musicians for the best sound and the best tunes. Missing Walter. Gone too soon!
Ahhh....what a breath of fresh air
STEELY DAN EXCELENT BAND!
Far and away one of the very best groups to ever grace the planet!

I'm so loving this jam. The sound is great and they are some of the greatest musicians ever.
Steely Dan is still one of the best
😂Bassist is killing it!! Give this guy a good listen.
Love Walter Beckers Tone along with Donald Fagens trademark voicing. What a Wonderful World indeed.
I went to London in 1974 as a sixteen year old to work for the Summer (student) from Ireland, and the guy i stayed with had an enormous LP collection in Ireland and was always on to the best music.Well one day i was home from work and chilling and my friend came in with some new music he had just purchased and and he placed the first record on the turntable and the intro of Rikki dont lose that number came on, my ears seemed to grow a tad as i sat up and was instantly converted to a Dan Fan and even today at 67 i am still a diehard , luv um.
Such an excellent funky blues drummer who was also adept in jazz and r&b. Died too soon . RIP..
I remember purchasing this CD days after setting my new Integra 7, 5.1 Surround sound system w/Klipsch speakers. When I cranked it up, my ears could not comprehend the most beautiful music and sounds coming out of my speakers. The next day went out and purchased a complete Steely Dan box set. What a treasure that was. Still one my favorites.
You sir have the life.
Humans playing with feeling and groove. Rad~!
Walter tickled the hell out of me playing guitar, he reminded me of an angry little bobblehead doll swaying his head with every lick. He and Fagen were top shelf musicians and a hell of a songwriting team. RIP Walter.
Tight, smooth, funky, edgy all at the same time! Love the Dan!
Magically delicious and sweet to the ear. How can this much awesomeness exist in one band. They collectively push me to nirvana. Thanks Steely, you never fail.
Nice.
Simply the BEST‼
The sound is incredible...like no effects...just pure singin' and playin"
Damn...that kick and snare sound perfect. Such a solid groove in a perfect pocket the entire time. So inspiring.
This is so tight it sounds like a studio album. Awesome 😁✌️☮️❤️
❤❤❤ Man I miss Walter! One of the great guitarists that few people think of when they're making their "best ever guitar blah blah" lists.
I remember when this DVD came out. Played it to death. It just sounds so good. Two Against Nature is single-free, yet it's clearly their best record after Aja. You fall into those grooves and you never ever get out.
didnt it win record of the year?
@@Thombrawley1
Yep, that it did…..
Personally, I didn’t think it actually was. I felt the Academy gave it to Donald and Walter in recognition for their outstanding catalog of music over the years. Don’t get me wrong it’s a solid effort, just not as good as so many other Steely Dan albums, Aja, Royal Scam, Gaucho….we all have our favorites… But having said that, I’ll take it….lol 👍🏻🍸❤️😎
I had never seen this concert before. Thanks for posting, it was the highlight of my day.
What a groove master Ricky Lawson was, one of the best.
Gone way too soon.
So tight!
Oh yah super tight just superb as always ans as you said The Best!
Eternally stacking those 4ths! Simply the best!
Love Steely Dan songs! Favorites!
Steely Dan is another thing. Its Fine Music all the way. They for me fuisioned all theyre influences with a Smooth Jazz Vibe . Aa a guitar player myself its very difficult to play Brecker,s Lines Don and Jason i mean as a musician myself all those arrangments the chord progressions all that stuff that only some people understand fine musicians know so do millions of Fine People round de world ¡ ❤❤🎸🎸 I never get tired of hearing them .
my fave version of the band. Herington, Pugh, Bumpus, Cave, Calhoun.... Outstanding!
You managed to leave out the best musician in the band - Chris Potter. You want outstanding? Go listen to his jazz stuff, or any of his sideman appearances in Dave Holland's band.
@@steverickenbacher7110 I first heard Potter with Red Rodney at the Blue Note in NYC and I was floored. Been a huge fan ever since.
@@milesian1 Me too :) Have been buying everything he's on ever since. Those Holland sideman appearances are especially exceptional.
Agreed, an awesome combo. As great as Herrington is, too easily we forget the subtle brilliance of Walter's playing. RIP Mr Becker
Thanks Kevin for this jewel 💎 greetings from Perú 🇵🇪
I'm old, they didn't tour much but always awaited their albums coming out
When the new ones came out they were always like an advanced music lesson...
Magic. My favourite band growing up and still is. Ricky Lawson (RIP) was the best drummer to ever grace the Dan live band. So crisp and clean.
Tight as F ❤❤
WOW!, What a Sound, like no other, by this Great Band!
Steely dan has always been cuttin edge. Excellent expression of jazz fusion....modern jazz and contemporary rock and roll.😊
Discovered SD back in the early 70's, and I've been an enthusiastic fan ever since. I love these guys. Massive talent.
My favorite band, so good.
Nice to hear music. THANK YOU.
AMAZZING!
Gli steely Dan sono l unica band che ascolterei di continuo senza mai annoiarmi, emozione ogni volta.
When I heard SD for the first time in the 70s, I didn't know what to think. I was into rock, prog rock and metal. Years and years later I rediscovered them and being a musician, I love them! Also, as a kid in tje 70s, I didn't understand the lyrics. Bonus points!
Xmas eve 2022 and this is great shit..from teens till the end the sound scape of my life. Have a great Xmas to all
Yes best wishes bro
Totally love them, so affortunate to have seen them live in 2012, Walter still alive! Beacon theater...travelled 16.000Km....
Super cool..Ricky Lawson exceptionally tight groove
How have I not come across this before?
Renewed my great love of this band.
Musicianship and production close to the studio perfect versions
Musical excellence
I remember back in the 80's when I'd go to concerts, they were always playing Aja or Gaucho way before not just the show, but the soundcheck; especially at big outdoor venues. One day I found myself right by the sound booth at a Grateful Dead show after hearing Aja (in full) earlier before soundcheck. I thanked the sound guy for playing Aja earlier and asked him if he was the Steely Dan fan. He responded he was a fan but that he plays that disc to dial in his sound system because it was immaculately engineered. I couldn't agree more!
I used to do that for 'Front House Sound' too. My previous one was an album called Feel No Fret by Average White Band. Don't expect you to listen to the entire album, but please listen to Atlantic Avenue, it is also musical PERFECTION
They were one of the first artists to get put on CD, so there was a time when you could only find their stuff on CD or in the cut-out bins, LOL.
🎼 STEELY 🎵 DAN 🎶 another of my favorite rock Band since 1981. Greetings 🙏
I definitely agree with that comment. Never get tired of listening to this fab band . Looking forward to more 😂 Obviously we miss mr Becker ❤
Silky Smooth!!!😮😮
Between Steely Dan And Chicago. MY Favorites! Other people can have their Favorites, But those are mine!! TRULY GREAT M U S I C!!
Good god. I just cannot believe how good these songs are and how amazing these guys play. Just amazing.
Having seen Steely Dan across our great nation at least if I remember correctly seven times over the past three decades has been pure pleasure totally different live then their albums witch are excellent in themselves 😊
I remember when this aired back in 2000. I was freshly single living in my big house. Back when girls wore pants like that middle backup singer. The snare sound is great, I'm a big The Police fan so, of course. Great show, thanks for posting this gem
Great music? That's how it's done! Had to wait awhile for "Two Against Nature" but it was so nice when it showed up. Lucky to have seen them live after the release. RIP Mr. Becker. Lost Wayne Shorter few days ago, shout out to him also! RIP!
These guys are the shit. So damn good.
The Dream Team . What a brilliant understated guitar player Becker was
SD was a big part of my soundtrack during my college years, 1976-80.
Cornelius Bumpus!!!!! AND Chris Potter!!! Such a luxury!!!
Sheeee-oot! Look at this roster! What a super band!!!
Talk about a room full of talented musicians! Unbelievable. And the quality of the audio and video is top notch.
Go ahead and hate me, Fagan’s vocals let it down. He ain’t got the pipes anymore. Band is so tight when they fart dogs bark, but this album isn’t for me. I’m always going back to my old school. Steely Dan that is. 😁
@@CorePathway No Hate, but you do have to understand...being a singer myself (now 64 years old) The human voice is the hardest natural instrument to control in the World! Unlike other instruments, the vocal cords do age with time. And a lot of singers vocal cords lose their elasticity with age! (In the case of RUSH) So give him a break on that...he is not a keyboard.
Since I heard "Go back & do it again" , I've been jammin' to this great band.
Simply the greatest band / musicians of all time
Yum, always so tasty … my ears are speaking of course. Thank you Steely and Dan ❤. From lifetime fan, Perth Western Australia.
Best of the best. I heard them first in 1972, aged 12. Today their play list randomises in my car, as I potter in my workshop, as I scribble in the study and various lines and harmonies thread through my head as I go about my daily meanderings at work...for no reason one of their didactic lyrics will load in the head space and I'm smiling- As I work in Mental healthcare, people think I'm one of the inmates not on staff. Thanks for sharing this now 22 year old set- its as refreshing as when I first put the needle on the LP back in 72.
Hey, thanks for taking the time to paint a picture with those words. I have similar stories with all sorts of albums from that decade too. time travel is possible afterall
@@kevinmcgrath3591 Hi Kevin. Thanks for your response. Bands from our youth were truly alive when compared to contemporary sanitised music. Their splendid albums worshipped by my long haired mates & I. Around the same time as Steely Dan were entering my orbit, I discovered Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Blood Sweat & Tears, Weather Report, Jethro Tull, Camel, Little Feat and the Eagles, and all still feature as favourites. My Son is also a fan of his Dad's grooves and his playlist is a near mirror image. I have many of these bands' albums on Vinyl and when using the old steam-driven turntable, I'm well and truly time travelling back to my parents living room with a pair of drum sticks, keeping time and flicking my long hair out of my face. Regards from Canberra, Australia
@@timc924 Yes, almost the same story here, my son is also mirroring my taste plus stuff of his own (which is tasty too). Id add; Tubular Bells, Zappa, Joni Mitchell, Neil young's early stuff, kraftwerk, - it was fertile ground back then.
@kevinmcgrath3591 ..and no auto-tune! Just an almost unfair amount of God given talent! RIP Walter Becker.
It’s all so amazingly in tune:)
This stuff is so amazing! i'VE BEEN a fan then early 70s-- thanks bro RIP! Skunk really put SD on a rockstar trajectory!🎸🎸
It’s amazing when you can bring all these musicians together and their all playing off each other perfectly, man what a sound you can never get tired of it reaches deep into your soul. Thanks for posting Steely Dan one of the best.
All the songs were great, but Green Earrings was AWESOME!
There older songs take me way back and their newer ones keep their tradition going, and their sound and style are the epitome of understated cool set by the jazz masters...
24 Years ALREADY!- Wow - just Wow 😮 🤯 !😮
Obviously every musician here is just off the charts on talent and focus, but Jon's solo work is just mind-blasting on point here, there's just an explosion of tone, attack, and precision that he just stacks one note after another without slip or fail - seamlessly melding the solo work from the album version(s) with new work, making it all just... work! It all FITS. Being present at this recording would have been a once in a lifetime experience!
