Paul Schaffer minus One.
Coffee? To much coffee? I mean if you drink coffee, which use to be a very big Brazilian thing, back in the 40's, you can carry on a conversation about anything, in fact everything- all at once. I'm not saying you drink too much coffee, but I LOVE it. Ever since I visited a diner near the Brill Building, which is in New York. It had doors. And sometimes they were locked. But we'd drink coffee all night and wait until they opened. And- oh, are you Donald Fagen? I remember you from the 70's and your partner Walter Becker. You made how many albums? As I remember, it was about a dozen. I used to listen to them outside the Brill Building, and - oh that's our time. Thanks for visiting, Dirk Fagen! Time flew by.
@@skipdalu5805 Ha!
As sad as it sounds, it´s true. Why not just let Donald Fagen talk?
What could be better…?
Instead he let him play. A rather unusual interview.
The One minus Paul Schaffer
Donald Fagen is such a great interviewer. He gets Paul Schaffer to really open up here.
😂
lol
LOLOLOLOLOL...You wrong for that!!
Haha - exactly my thought! You’ve got Donald Fagen for gods sake - let him speak -you just can’t shut up! So frustrating this ‘interview ‘!
hahahahaha tickled me your comment
Donald can tell a great story.
Too bad Paul kept talking over him.
So bloody annoying I had to turn it off
Frustrating.
Just ridiculous.
Unbearable. I had to leave after 2 minutes.
@@tacatube yeah I couldn't watch it either. I mean Donald's not looking that great, this might have been his last interview. Wouldn't be shocked.
Well I made it till 3 minutes, 13 seconds, before pausing, to confirm comments of what I was experiencing…..a pure motor-mouth that would not let his guest speak! One of the most talented musicians in the world and Paul blew it for me!
Yeah - I had to bail too. Such a shame.
Omg Thank you, same here!! Paul was so very rude!!
Ditto
Paul was so excited that he was basically asking questions and answering them himself 😅
So nice of Donald Fagen to have Paul Shaffer for an interview. He listened so carefully and let Paul get his story out.
Thank God for him because I always wanted to know what PAUL thought of things
Agreed, but it was a privilege to hear them both vamping and improving together, dueling piano style. Thanks for this all around!
Giulia Iglesias. That’s Hilarious. We’ll said! That’s exactly what happened!
@@adamkrauss303 Oh no I agree. Once the playing started it felt much more natural. I just wish Paul had led with that.
Aptly put.
Cuz Dave L. loved Paul more than Zevon's prodigious songwriting talents! I think not! Nobody's ever cried out more Shaffer live, ever! 💯🔥
Good thing Donald was there to fill in the tiny gaps in Paul's monologue.
😂
"...hey Donald, thanks for being here!".... "Ohkhay...".
LOLOLOLOL
This was a great interview by Steely Dan legend Donald Fagen. I always wanted to know Paul Shaffer's every last thought.
Had Walter been there, he would have shut Paul up......very quickly.
Would've been nice to hear Donald Fagen speak for himself.
Naw man.....he can do other interviews too. This was incredible! I love the 2 perspectives here. Paul Shaffer is the man also.
Seriously, Paul. Take a deep breath. You are respected as a musician and even a hilarious actor in bit parts throughout the show biz world. You don't have to try so hard. Let your guest talk and share.
Absolutely.. well said.
Might he be drunk?
Nonsense
It was hard to listen to
Sound isn't great but love this quit bitchin
Paul Shaffer needs to stop interrupting, it is like he is interviewing himself and Donald is watching
You read my mind.
I’m not so sure , without him it would’ve been a silent interview . Fair to say you need to push Donald . I loved it though . A real talent not manufactured like today .
Yes. Schaffer has always seemed to be an all-around obnoxious guy, albeit a talented one.
It's funny because he never talked much on Dave's show.
Paul would do poorly in a job interview... Talks too much!
To say Donald Fagen is a musical & lyrical genius feels like a gross understatement. As unique & original as they come.
Donald Fagan is such a badass. His music is timeless!
Paul you got to let them talk....and into THEIR story.
I know, he's worse than Margaret Brennan on Face The Nation on CBS.
Hell of a musician, terrible interviewer!
Yeah Paul for real give Donald time to get his thoughts together 🤔 Donald does not do a lot of interviews he is a awesome storyteller some of these concepts of songs some of these musical heroes as a child, The fans wanna hear his voice 🤔 but Paul we appreciate you thank you for the interview🤗
I don't mind it. They're on a mind-meld level. When 2 or more smart people get 2gether, this happens a lot. Think of it as witnessing a privileged conversation, as opposed 2 a proper television interview.
Paul is a great musician … not such a good host 😂😂 very insightful but he talks too much , it’s all good , wry relaxed show , like Ronnie woods
Rule number ONE when you’re going to interview someone: Ask the question and let your guest answer it! Damn… Paul just doesn’t shut up… That’s really annoying!
They say Sean Hannity talks over his guests too, must have went to same school of interviewing 😆
@@mikekokomomike So does Margaret Brennan on CBS's "Face The Nation".
Yeah I agree with you Donald Fagen is very fascinating he is a great storyteller and he doesn’t do a lot of interviews it takes him a while to get warmed and comfortable up he doesn’t like being in the spotlight😌. I think the art of conversation it Hass to be a balance don’t dominate the conversation be able to listen to other points of view because everybody has a story to tail and some folks need more time to express their self🤔. But Paul we appreciate you thank you for the interview
@@mikekokomomike Gave up on Hannity a decade ago,
"So what do you think of.... because I think.... and, you know, my mother was a correctional officer and I love cops and the military, God bless 'em all; these Democrats are at war with them... Well, thanks for coming, that's all the time we have..."
It’s amazing to see how grumpy old Donald turns into a sweet kid once plays an old song that he likes. Music has the power!
Goddamn I love Steely Dan. Just so wonderful to hear it. How it makes me feel. Just really fantastic music that while at times so jazzy, complex but never pretentious; their songs are sophisticated soul.
Join us next time when Paul Shaffer will tell us all the history and theory of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen will say "Uh... yeah, Uh... yeah.".
Paul Shaffer: "Thank you for being here."
Donald Fagen: "Okay".
lol
Love Steely Dan! Much Love to Donald Fagen and rest in peace Walter Becker. Thank you to such a great soundtrack to my life! Paul please let the man talk.
Two legends! Thank you so much for having my hero Donald Fagen on!
Paul's a great piano player; but a terrible interviewer. Gawd I hate it when people interrupt. Especially when they're interviewing someone like the uber cool genius Donald Fagan
Yes. So many missed opportunities.
The most important part of interviewing...is listening.
Painful to watch, embarrassing.
B Campbell when Donald isn’t punching his wifes lights out or throwing her down flights of stairs and being arrested by New York police he is an Uber cool super genius
@@jesseimpersonal Paul Shaffer horrible vocalist. And interview. Massively disappointing
Steely Dan has provided so much joy in my life.
Despite the fact Paul talked all over him. Still worth it. Anything with DF is worth it and Paul has a vast knowledge of music to pull from and you can tell, was a bonafide fan.
Paul Shaffer. The only interviewer that' asks a question then immediately answers it himself!! Just loves the sound of his own voice. Jeez.
Paul annunciates every word with an s in it, adds an h. " Did you shtudy mushic on your own?".
Couldn't listen to it anymore.
They don’t make bands like Steely Dan anymore! Man they made awesome music.
They don’t make bands period, sad.
All their songs too me are timeless.
I played and composed, heavily influenced by Steely Dan and Weather Report. But I could not reach, with even a finger, over the surface. The Ether obove was, and is, filled with flying crap. I had to stay below, in order not to get hit with shit.
That goes for other composers too I guess. But one day, friends, that crap under the wings of Phoenix will come to close to the sun.
That will be the time for us mongrels to rise up and lead the way.
Donald Fagen led the way, but we nead guys and girls carrying the heritage of musicianship like that of Donald and Walter.
Wait for the death of Phoenix.
@@ShareTheSphere same didnt find the right people to work with..😜
State Cows
Now we know why Dave never let Paul host Late Night. He didn't allow Donald to finish his stories.
David Letterman let Paul Shaffer guest host one of the Late Show episode during David Letterman bypassed surgery...
LOLOLOLOL
I love Fagen. Thank you
I knew it! That Ray Charles was an influence on Donald. I went to see Steely Dan in Toronto at Massey Hall. What a band so happy that Walter was there. This was well before Walter's passing. As well as the amazing Keith Carlock on drums. It was my first time seeing SD. I remember watching Donald and his singing and playing I could see and hear a Ray Charles influence. It was so interesting. My sincere condolences to Donald and the Steely Dan family. Walter was an amazing player and writer and I am sure a wonderful partner to you Donald. I have heard in many interviews that you guys had your own sense of humor and language and how you both would discuss ideas in your music around other musicians. Everyone who had witnessed those discussions between music partners said in interviews that it was fantastic to be able to witness that firsthand. If you were one of the musicians on an SD session or rehearsal. I want to thank you, Paul and Donald!! Great to watch this interview and listen to you guys jam. I have been a big fan for most of my life since Can't Buy a Thrill came out! Thank you for writing and producing some of the best music ever. A big part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you!
After 40 years, this is the first interview with DF I've ever watched. He's so normal and humble for such an immense talent.
He rarely does interviews as he is a shy person who actually never wanted to be a front man. But his actual personality is kind of anti-social bordering on misanthropic - he does not suffer fools gladly, so I'm impressed with how he handled Paul's interruptions and inanity so well.
A few of the times Paul interrupted, I was sure Donald Fagan would lose his patience and just walk out. But did you see what he did instead? He complimented Paul Schaffer on his knowledge. Such class.
Paul talks too much
It always seemed like they made music just to make music and not to get famous. That was just a byproduct.
@@1oolabobnaaah. Notice how Fagen said it was like being in school in 1953? Just waiting for three o clock, looking out the window?
That’s an absolute, Steely Dan answer if there ever was one. Sounds so well thought out and versed. And Pual doesn’t pick up that he’s being jabbed.
Awesome backhand by Fagen!
Paul an over the top interviewer interrupter to me. Donald in response was cool and polite.
I assume he wanted to insert background info Donald wasn’t providing? But yeah, not the most brilliant chatshow host.
@@stephanleo With respect the background info provided was not new or breaking news to true Steely Dan fans. Donald is naturally a reserved guy and when trying to answer a question Paul would speak over him. Further Paul’s singing was not necessary. The interview required a more sensitive approach. No big deal after all Paul is a highly competent musician.
I lost the thread of the convo because Paul kept interjecting HIS answers to his own questions. Totally disrupted the flow of Donald’s story telling.
-yeah.. let the man talk. and now I understand why Paul didn't sing on Letterman. let Donald sing, too.
Take the silly glasses off...straighten out...stop interrupting....
you’re a great keyboard man, bad singer, bad interviewer....
Love the way DF derailed that train all graphite and glitter... with the unscripted key change... priceless!😆
loved that and thought he was going to do it way before
I remember the time that Steely Dan appeared on The Late Show. It was around 2000 maybe. They were always a great legendary band. RIP Walter Becker. They played in too commercials with the Paul Shaffer Orchestra backing them up.
Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker are arguably two of the finest musicians and writers of music in the last century. Outstanding sound and talent.
Definitely, and I would say mark knopfler from dire straits comes to mind also, just had some magic about em.
There’s a “making of” video with The Dan explaining I can’t remember which album but they basically kept finishing each others’ sentences musically, like a true made-for-each-other couple. Magical…
RIP Walter Becker, a legend in music
Totally
@@BillySBC Walter made Donald possible. I don't think Donald would have taken those risks if Walter hadn't been there to have his back. Not a classic duo in any musical sense, necessarily (and Walter was the first to say he was no session guy) but together? Alchemy. Greater than the sum of their parts. And who could want or expect more than that out of a life?
Fagen looks like he died so RIP to both.
@@tw364 you shouldnt say that thats kinda messed up
@@Bludgersofficial okay bud
Fagen is 'head and shoulders' of Paul!!! My life changed when Walter passed. RIP brother...
Been a Dan Fan since 1979. Heard Asa during my stay at Chanute AFB Illinois.
I lit up when this interview appeared in my feed. I’ve been a Steely Dan fan since I was a teenager. Becker and Fagen were geniuses, as Donald continues to be. I was really looking forward to hearing his insights. Perhaps (hopefully) even plans to go back to the vaults to remaster unreleased tracks, for new 50th Anniversary reissues.
Sadly, I won’t find out from this segment, as I had to stop it after 5 minutes. This was like an SNL skit that overran its welcome.
Paul’s a consummate musician, but he’s got a lot to learn about interviewing, and letting his guests SPEAK. I give Donald credit for having the patience of a saint, here. He handled it better than I would have…
Can't agree more.
It got better as it progressed
Too bad you couldn't get through it. Try again--it's worth it, even with Paul's loquacity. The Philip Glass joke is hilarious!
AMEN!!!!
all the presenters on sirius love the sound of their own voices too much ffs let this man, the greatest rock musician of all time no less, talk !!!
Agree
My thoughts exactly. And to think, Paul was almost George Costanza. I like Paul but Jason was the better choice. Fagen was so mellow and cool. I loved his book Eminent Hipsters. And on this program, he actually made Chevy Chase cool again. Something Paul Simon did not do on You can call me Al.
Paul Shaffer, SHUT UP!!!
Paul was never an interviewer.
Paul, she-it man, you talk too much.. let Donald breathe man.. That's why we come to watch these things..😁
My favorite band of all time. Such incredible writing by Mr. Fagen and Mr. Becker (rip). Get their greatest hit cd collection if you are a fan.
Ya Jim my favorite band of all time too! Lucky to have seen Steely Dan many times over the years. Hopefully Mr. Fagen can " Do it Again "
Citizen Steely Dan, the best
I have listened to the band Steely Dan Walter Becker and Donald Fagan all of my adult life they are by far the best 👌 👍. God-bless Walter I sure did like the drum rifts by Mr. Purdy.??
Let. The man. Speak.
C'mon Paul! Jeez!
Paul: "Donald, tell me how you and Walter started your band."
Donald: "Well, Walter and I met at Bard College, and we...."
Paul (interupting): "That's great, now listen to me talk for another five minutes".
I know man, blew it within the first 20 seconds, jeez...
The amazing thing is Donald Fagen, so notorious for his almost manic perfectionism in the studio exhibited such patience to Paul's aggressive verbose injections... it's counter to my imagery of this disciplined artist.
I am so sorry that Donald Fagen had to undergo this excruciating interview, but he overcame what he was dealt with. Mr. Fagen was the consummate professional, the epitome of cool, the opposite of Paul Shaffer.
AMEN!!!
Perfectly put. Two cool musical Jews - one very very much cooler than the other!
I think you are misreading this exchange. Donald had more fun being interviewed here (partly thanks to the piano in front of him) than we've come to expect. Donald is also cool enough not to be an egotistical a-hole about having far greater career success than Paul, and he clearly respects his knowledge.
Paul missed the Steely Dan'esq dig.... like being in school, staring out the window waiting for 3 o'clock (the bell). Paul was doing most of the talking here. Donald, thanks for all the great music! You are definitely one of the coolest cats in music!
That was funny as hell. Wonder if PS caught the sarcasm.
That jab by Fagen is the most Steely Dan thing ever. Worth watching the interview just for that!😂
Many years ago on Letterman Paul used to perform an impression of Cher singing ‘Oh Holy Night’ and now he sounds like that all the time.
The best part of this interview is the two of them jamming on keyboards.
I love when Paul asks Fagen if the Dan ever had to "dumb down their music for the general public".
Donald being very polite...some would have walked away from this ' interview '. I lasted only ten minutes !
Yes, I think Donald is very mature and spiritual
Three minutes 54 seconds. It's unbearable. Why doesn't the host just interview himself?
I lasted 7 minutes. 😶
Agreed
11:36 "I could listen to you talk..."
When, Paul?
Lmao😂
Lol I thought the exact same thing. Paul is like ‘if I can get a word in here you motormouth’ and Donald is just sitting there silently
Despite Paul talking all over Donald in the early moments, I stuck with it, and I'm sure glad I did. Paul does back off somewhat. More important, there's plenty of jamming. In fact, this is the most I've seen/heard Fagen play in years. He's my keyboard hero.
What fun! Terrific exchange between the two! Even with Paul going a bit Jiminy Glick from time to time, must be his Canadian roots showing.
Fagen is one of the best songwriters and composers in music history. Long live Steely Dan
Could’ve stood 3 more hours of this, if -yes-Donald had just a little more chance to finish stories. Becker/Fagen are icons, bless them! the DAN!
Exactly what I was thinking..I wish this was longer!
first time i see Fagen smiling✌🏽😄
That was terrific. There's not many people I'd ever want to meet but DF is at the top of the list. Two of the greatest composers ever. Their songs were just perfect gems, masters of tension/release. I only wish Paul had let Donald go on about how they composed their songs. Anyway 👍
Biggest problem with older tv ppl: they just dont get that the internet is infinite, time is no concern. Let the man speak FFS!
I did meet DF. I was in Australia watching SD concerts in 2007 and ended up taking the same commercial flight from Perth to Adelaide that the band was taking. I figured out we were all in the departure lounge and slowly I made my way around to say a quick hello. Maybe not possible to do that in the US, but the way it worked out in Australia we ran into the band more than once. Becker and Fagen were not around after shows, but we bumped into the other band members a couple of times.
When Paul calms down enough to just play and they riff off each other, it’s frickin great
Fabulous seeing Donald Fagan raw and honest
19:47 I love when Fagen describes the painful interview like being in school: "It's been just like school in 1953. Staring out the window and waiting for 3 o'clock." 😂
It went right over Paul's head, or he pretended it did.
His comment was genius.
Holy crap…
Let Donald talk😳
Steely Dan one of the best bands ever, I love their sophisticated type of jazz, and all their fusion, is so unique, hard to explain but beatiful music they made, is one of those bands that I never get tired of listening, thanks for all the music 👌🏻💯
I love Steely Dan❤
Why was the music of the 60s & 70s so good? Because it was era in music that, unlike today, was more or less a meritocracy. Only the best rose to the top and were allowed to be on the radio and/or TV and hold our collective attention.
Nice to see Donald expressive and smiling. Funny that Paul is behind sunglasses and Donald is au naturel.
I love Steely Dan’s music: have often listened to it on rewind for hours since the 70s! Donald and Walter left the world a wonderful gift!
My Girl! That's my all time favorite r&b song. Thanks for mentioning Eugene Record.
Paul and Donald, what a combination.
Becker and Fagan. My all time favorite duo!
awesome to see fagen what a dude, fascinating. paul shaffer -- as an interviewer: really horrible, embarrassing to see, and actually anger inducing. did not acquit himself well at all, seeming like he had just done five lines or something...
i have work meetings and there is often someone who sucks all the air out the room, and they have no idea they are doing it...
i mean, he can play, and wants to jam, although he also led all the time with that too.... so...: this is great stuff. donald is 100% awesome, nothing fazes him -> no surprise...
So much admiration for this man. Can't imagine my life without his music!
Fantastic. I'm so happy I found this video a year later.
The soundtrack to my youth and my retirement years. Saw them at Beacon Theater twice and in Birmingham once, and I still listen to their songs every day. Inventors of Mu chords.
Can’t Buy A Thrill was the very first tape I bought for the cassette player in my first car. I still listen to em whenever I’m in the car. And ya it was a 8 track.
I am that old.
This is the chillest and open I’ve seen Fagen. Too bad Paul couldn’t help talking over him.
14:42 jeez that Rhodes sounds so sweet in the lower registers, and the chorus adds so much gloss.
Chill and open perhaps because of Paul’s interview style
I know! Fagen is usually so churlish and for once he is chill and being interrupted every thought!
I don't want Donald to get any older. He has to live forever. I command it!
By the way, thank you so much for even coming out my goodness gracious you never do interviews. And I never seek interviews so this is a treat to find you when by chance I’m seeking your interviews.
Steely Dan will go down in history as one of the greatest groups ever, And you're probably never heard of Them☮
Them was the first band that Van Morrison played in. Not sure what that has to do with Steely Dan.
@@WDRhine It means if Becker and Fagin Thought he was worthy I guess that means he was. Love Steely Dan, Love Morrison But don't agree with his politics
man what a blessing to see and here Donald Fagen. I have their Songs imprinted deep into my musical brain.
I agree. --Hear, BTW.
Thank you Paul..you made my day 07/28/2023..With Fagen...I grew up with all his music and I still playing it
What fun! The material brought me back to the joys of my youth, everything wonderful with great stories intermingled! Two of my favorite musicians, killing it! The Centrifugal Satz Clock fully 100% approves of this.
Paul, thank you for a wonderful interview. The 21 minutes was so entertaining. This was a musical history class. You can play any song. You know everyone in the musical industry. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and musical talent.
Paul. Take a page from "your old pal Dave " and let the guest do most of the talking. Donald you are the man.
Very up close and personal...What a gem you two!
Paul asked Donald a great question about connecting his jazz influence to rock. Twas a masterful pursuit which really made their music great. Thanks to Donald and Paul. Paul would be a great host on a live tv show exclusively for musicians. This show is great.
My favorite IGY lyric - “A just machine to make big decisions, programmed by fellas with compassion and vision. We’ll be clean when their work is done. We’ll be eternally free, yes, and eternally young” Such beautiful, sad, sarcastic and accurate prophesying!
Absolutely....I.G.Y. is a true Masterpiece. It was my favorite song in late 1982 as 13 year old, and still is my favorite song in 2023🙏🏼🙏🏾🙏🏽
Here here. Well said.
