What makes Mr. Clapton such a very special luminary in the world that he inhabits is the enormous ammount of ground he has covered and is still covering. A bluesman at heart, he has additionaly written and performed some of the most diverse and beautiful songs to come from one artist over the past 50 some odd years. The years have caught up with him which is why it's wonderful to watch this 1988 concert from Tokyo with Mark Knopfler. Eric Clapton set the bar high and so many other performers work very hard in attempting to reach it.
Mark always looks like he is having such a good time up there. No matter if it is HIS concert or not -- those smiles of his. Music is his life, no matter whose it is. Love him.
@@ChristianWelbury I actually love the song "Cocaine", to the chagrin of my parents with that music came out. I just love the energy and the rhythm of it. No personal experience with cocaine in my my past at all, but I sure love the song. Layla is good, but it is so overplayed. Or at least it WAS there for a while.
@@ChristianWelbury I was a fan of music from the time I got my first portable radio/record player when I was 9. I took it everywhere. The first song I ever heard on my new radio was Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth." Whenever I hear that song, I am still that little girl, bopping to the beat of my shiny new red radio. I have since expanded my musical taste to include just about every genre. I love discovering music I would ordinarily not listen to. November 21, 1987 Eric went back to Hazleton for a 2nd treatment and returned home for Christmas. It’s interesting that he went right back into touring in 1988 sober now, and for the rest of his life. Here is some background information on the year of 1988 and the workload of the tour: (( BROADCAST RECORDING FROM ERIC CLAPTON S 25th ANNIVERSARY TOUR IN 1988 - FEATURING ELTON JOHN. Eric Clapton s 25th Anniversary Tour, featuring Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler among band members, was arranged to celebrate what was, in the late-1980s, Clapton s quarter century in the music business. Beginning on January 22, 1988 in Birmingham and ending on November 5 the same year in Osaka, the tour led through Asia, Europe and North America. Announced in December 1987 the tour quickly sold out and during 42 concerts, including four in Japan, 12 in the United Kingdom and 26 in the United States and Canada, Eric and band performed in front of more than 500,000 concertgoers, taking around 14 million US dollars in revenue. On November 2nd, the entourage performed at Japan s Tokyo Dome, for a show which was recorded for live broadcast on TV and FM radio, both in Japan and across the US. Elton John performed both solo on a couple of numbers during the concert, and alongside Clapton and band for several more songs. This entire gig is now presented on this 2CD Set in perfect quality for the first time. ))
Wow Wow Wow! The intro to Crossroads alone is worth a mint! Then right into Straight-Ahead 12-Bar Blues at its Absolute Best! And then, for a nice change of pace, we get "Money For Nothing"! Just realized how complex it is. 💥
Hear the intro to I shot the sheriff! Just the independent piece of music, and smoothly passing to original song. Eric's solo, started around 18:00 is also different to what I know, I think it was from influence of playing with Mark - it's more delicate. Good sound mixing, I can still hear Mark putting extra notes to the complex solo. Marvelous cooperation. And Sally - roughly 24:00 such country riffs by Mark. After finding the video I can't resist to play it few times per week. Thanks, KnopflertkUnlimited for posting it! Regarding "Money" you see how different had Mark played it. Such a show, and then! Comes the boss! From the title I didn't expect the presence of Elton John and was highly surprised. Music, which they performed together is very unique, what else to say? It's good that probably will last in UA-cam for years.
Thanks to both of these dudes for providing the soundtrack during the best time of this iteration of existence. The fortune of experiencing music is abundant here.
I know how weird not to include Elton’s name. I mean it’s Elton John. Arguably Elton is more well known that Knopfler and is definitely a bigger musical icon.

Anyone else notice the opening piano to Layla was replaced with the opening piano to Dire Straits’ Romeo & Juliet??? Fitting for Layla- the bass then proceeds into DS’ Latest Trick- b4 hitting the opening to Layla- BRILLIANT! What happens when you have another band’s keyboardist and guitar 😂😂😂
Yeah, great intro, but to my ears it was not "your latest trick" but the first bass melody-part in "a remark you made" by weather report, which fits perfectly in the knopfler-cosmos.

Amazing lineup!! Eric, Marc, Nathan East, and Elton John.. insane!!
steve ferrone on the kit!
Who is the bald percussionist?
@@selina9091 Ray Cooper. He toured extensively with Elton John, sometimes as just himself backing up Elton John, and sometimes as part of the band.
@@johnweeks65 Yes! I saw him with Elton John . Thanks.
Ray Cooper.

Trying to compare Clapton to Knopfler to is like comparing oxygen to water. Why try? Equally important and impressive. Like comparing Hendrix to Van Halen. Quit wasting your time. All on the Top Shelf. No better, just different.
This has to be the most intelligent and well articulated "best guitarist" reply I've ever read.
Exacto....! Te contradices en lo que opinas!!! Léete!!!!
Comparar cosas iguales....no se puede!!!! But...your ignarace IS GREAT!!
Nobody comparing shit but you
You right man
The backup singers are perfect for eric. Great bass. What a beautiful group. Thanks.
Just when I thought I'd found the best versions of 'I Shot' (prob my all time favourite live Clapton track), I stumble across this...
Man, what a night that must have been ❤❤❤❤😂🎉😊
I listen to this every day. Sometimes twice a day. Love them all. In 7th through 9th grade, all we listened to was Elton. What a Master. Thank you Markie, Eric and Elton!! ❤ U Forever!!❤❤❤
How long have you been a fan? You love music 🎶
It's very hard to compare who is the best guitar player, there where so many they were the very best at what they expressed,I love them very much 🎉❤ They are a part of me at 64 and for ever more!!🎉❤
Mark Knopfler makes everything better
Absolutely. Genius
Agreed :)
Except for Wonderful Tonight. Still sucks
Why cause it was too slow?@@tangentz0007
Put more Mark Knopfler in your life :)
November 21, 1987 Eric went back to Hazleton for a 2nd treatment and returned home for Christmas. It’s interesting that he went right back into touring in 1988 sober now, and for the rest of his life. Here is some background information on the year of 1988 and the workload of the tour:
(( BROADCAST RECORDING FROM ERIC CLAPTON S 25th ANNIVERSARY TOUR IN 1988 - FEATURING ELTON JOHN. This entire gig is now presented on this 2CD Set in perfect quality for the first time. ))
👍💯👏👏👏
Danke 👍👍👍
2 of my very favorite guitarists on the same stage! I wish I could have seen this concert in person.
Never compare kings of their trade. In their own genres, they are both magicians...like serious magicians. Both absolutely brilliant
Wow Wow Wow! The intro to Crossroads alone is worth a mint! Then right into Straight-Ahead 12-Bar Blues at its Absolute Best! And then, for a nice change of pace, we get "Money For Nothing"! Just realized how complex it is. 💥
Knopfler plays different from anyone else.

You should definitely add Elton John's name to that title. Great restoration btw, I always wanted to watch this concert with a better quality.
I know how weird not to include Elton’s name. I mean it’s Elton John. Arguably Elton is more well known that Knopfler and is definitely a bigger musical icon.
I wish there was stuff like this now. People born in the 60s and 70s got to enjoy real good music in their younger years
Shit yeah we did we more bands to cover the 60s 70s and 80s era type music so it will never be forgotten long live rock and roll.
You're absolutely right 👍 ! Golden words ❤ many thanks for placing it ❤😊
I was born in 57 …… and heard the best …. like Knophler , Springsteen , CCR ,Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Foreigner, Nazareth ,Neil Young , JJ Cale , on and on and on 🎼🎵🎶🎼🎵🎼🎵🎶🎵🎼🎶
Olvidate.... nunca mas
@@michaelosborne4050what was really great, there was no singing of the audience like they do now.
Greatest verision of Layla ever (and i've seen many). Intro, solo, Elton and smoking guitar - Eric is GOAT!
How long have you been a fan? You love music 🎶
I came for the whole band - and stayed for the whole band ❤
That band was the greatest Clapton band ever
Great stuff. Brilliant quality. Thanks a lot.
Clapton and knopfler are beyond the beyond

Great concert ❤ Would have been great to include Sultans of Swing. Such great musicians! Loved the drum and percussion solos at the end!❤
geez, give it a break !
There is way too much talent on this stage
These were the day's when they wore nice clothes and played awesome music and sang wonderful songs that meant something🥰
Unlike today...now they look like construction workers!
They were skilled! Top performers.
I make sure I wear good cloths including a tie especially when I go to see blues or soul performers. It's out of respect for their talent.
Dos genios
Yes, and we don't see tattoos anywhere, thank God. In my opinion tattoos make entertainers look so ugly. These handsome men obviously have class and their suits and physical appearance are like icing on a delicious cake! P.S. I am exactly one month older than Eric Clapton! I'm an old lady with good taste. And it happened so fast!
I don't care what you or anybody else thinks.God and I know Eric Clapton is the best...
Puts falou tudo. ❤
Acuérdate cuando Hendrix tocó con el Clapton quedó perplejo tiritando
Марк и Эрик на одной сцене это очень круто! Эффект взорвавшейся бомбы! Невероятно красиво! Огромное Уважение!Спасибо! ❤👍👍👏
Nathan on vocals, Can't Find My Way Home!! Beautiful!!
Fabulous concert
Superstar lineup.❤
Saw this in Calgary 1988. Yes it was amazing
What a JOY to watch! A blessing!
I'VE BEEN TO THE CROSSROADS ONE TIME TOO MANY TIMES BUT I'D CERTAINLY LOVE TO GO TO THE CROSS ROADS WITH THESE EVER AWSOME DUDES, PEACE AND LOVE ALWAYS TO ERIC CLAPTON AND ALL INTHIS BAND🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤LAURA IN TEXAS USA ❤❤❤

Awesome-Such a cool Video with Eric Mark Elton Nathan and the Band. Love it👍👍👍
Nathan East is one of the best singers ever
I saw this concert. I should be somewhere in the crowd. I forgot the venue, Probably Tokyo dome or Budokan. Thank you for posting this.
2 Legends in concert!
Four ! Elton John and Ray Cooper
@@jamesbetaman2769 Ferrone and East are also legends
Wow, what a star-studded show, Some real talent on show here. We are spoiled for talent with these folks, thanks for posting, I would have loved to be there.
I was born in early 66, and so glad i came in time to appreciate all of this great stuff and got to see all three of them play live. Separately that this. Seeing all three on the same stage at the same time, would have been a dream.
Look Mark looks awesome!!
❤❤❤❤
And lace Sensor pickups made that Sound very spezial.. really cool😎😎
You sir are a fucking mad man. Thanks for the work on this gem !
Wow, love it. Wanted to see this performance of Money for nothing for years.
While I wasn't at this particular show? I was able to see Eric with Mark(sadly no Elton 😔) still great show,as Eric abd his Crack band were on fire the night I went,Thank-you very much for posting this!❤️🎸😎👍
no matter how cool you are, you will never be "Eric Clapton smoking on stage and ripping a kickass solo"-cool
good that Marks there to make it all sound good !
Was he smoking in this concert?
Yeah that’s a different kind of cool
Fumando la guitarra
srv is, imho
Wow it's 3:15 am here now, what did I just witness!?😮 thanks a lot for this awesome time capsule
Muito feliz por me deparar com este lindo concerto aqui no UA-cam, obrigado por postar! From Brasil
excelente grandes musicos cada con su estilo que se unen para hacer excelente musica,
I saw this tour. I felt Mark being on stage with Eric really pushed his playing to his best.
Chills. Literally chills.
Alan Clark did a very good job there even though I’m pretty sure it was Mark Knopfler’s idea.
Yeah, great intro, but to my ears it was not "your latest trick" but the first bass melody-part in "a remark you made" by weather report, which fits perfectly in the knopfler-cosmos.
William I must have you seen and heard this concert 100 times. And I never noticed the opening to Layla…you have a quick ear, must be a
musician. Im not but I’ve been listening to extraordinary musicians both on and off the hallowed ground known as the stage. I’ve been fortunate
To be able to work for concert promoters out of NYC, back .he day..
When the stars ( real rock n rollers) were just.. getting started I think
Music and those who make (create ) are as important as the air we breathe.
@@oneverystreet That's Alan "Hurricane" Clark my brother.
Proud to say I've seen the holy trifecta 🎸Clapton 🎸Beck &
🎸Page !!
And there's also Elton John what a Gig thanks for posting !!!
I saw this tour in Pittsburgh! At the old Civic Arena! Awesome show! Good times!
