- I improved the audio and video of this recording of the 1st night of filming for the PBS Special and live DVD. Footage for the special was filmed at the Sony Studios in New York City over two nights, and this video includes the entire first night's unedited footage. Some of these performances (such as Green Earrings and Josie) are the versions used for the final product, while other songs they used the 2nd night's performance. Living in the seventies - Smoking first class wheat All night long, while listening to steely dan - the best and most sophisticated Band of all time - what more could a music junkie ask for. . .
Without the threat of being laced with fentanyl....ah, those were the days.
This is the exact DVD that should have been released with a bonus extra the shenanigans Don and Walter having fun.
Many thanks Channel owner for doing what they should have done originally.
Nearly 50 years I have praised this band. The music is over the top and will always be as good as it sounds!
Many thanks for uploading this.
It's the Holy Grail of that fantastic and musically historic and significant night. 10/10+
It made me very emotional.
Miss you Walter and Cornelius.
Such Precision Such Masterful Music Just Astonishingly Amazing!!!🎤🎹🎸🎸🥁🥁🎼🎵🎶❤️❤️❤️❤️
So glad this recording was made. Their best work, captured live, great sound, fantastic band. This was their best live lineup. Cornelius and Walter 😢
I agree. This was a great pairing of musicians.
Agreed. Ricky (RIP) was their finest live drummer, too. Crisp and economical and unflashy. I know people rate Keith Carlock, but I find his playing (which is undeniably good) too loose for the Dan. Just mho obvs.
@@laurieharper1526Keith may be loose but that’s because he is a groove machine
One of the cool things about this video is you can finally see they are human and have flaws in performance, but are still fabulous musicians. Their records are so perfect it's just short of prissy. Live, the are like any other great musician.
This is better than the PBS doc of this great event. PBS editors missed 14 superior clips…
I've seen SD numerous times and after 2 Against Nature Becker and Fagan had the proverbial light bulb go off in their head that playing live wasn't a bad thing at all like they originally thought. In fact, even though they were perfectionists in making the best recordings that were possible in the studio, getting feedback from live audiences that actually buy the records is more valuable than the original song concepts they perceived. For example, in the past 10 years the backup singers sing the lead on Dirty Work. For King of the World the Horn Section covers the Synth Lead. By making subtle changes in arrangements, or instrumentations it make each piece performed more interesting because you can identify the difference to the original recordings. If you are a SD fan you should own a copy of every one of their original recordings, and know them in depth. When you hear them live you will detect slight changes made to each piece, even from one year to the next.
Absolutely THE BEST...bar NONE.❤❤❤
Man, I wanna play with this band, damn!
West of Hollywood is phenomenal!
Yeah. This is really cool. You can see Walter looking on Jon Herrington’s solo in “Do it Again” with interest and cool-approval. This video captures that. THAT’s the beauty of live performing.
I've once heard that live recordings are like "catching lightning in a bottle" ⚡🍶
Is. Still. The. Greatest. Band that. Existing. Still exists. So. Jazzy. Acquired. Taste. Have. Taste. In. Music. If. Nothing. Else
Very cool on Walt's part. Too bad the cameras missed Herrington's Pretzel Logic solo on both nights.
Was Herington’s very first show with them. Who knew at the time he’d be around 23 years later. Was disappointed that Drew wasn’t with them at the time . Got over it within a few songs.
Didn't know Dracula was such a great singer...! :)
He does seem like Dracula doesnt he?
Its interesting to hear this raw audio, I can see why they picked the songs they did for the actual DVD, very entertaining thanks.
The version of Home at Last here is killer. Don’t understand why it never made the DVD release unless they dropped it for the performance the next night. Walter’s guitar work is some of the best I ever heard him do and Michael Leonhart’s mute trumpet was great.
Drum solo at the end of Do it again was smokin!
Fabulous! (and particularly great to see the late Walter Becker doing his thing in 'Josie'.) 💕
Nice, a rough audio mix, the rhythm section especially strong and in-our-face, thanks for sharing.
This band has the prettiest and best backup singers.I regret never having the chance to see and hear this angelic bunch of musicians .Maybe in the next life…
Was backstage at one show (of many?… think it was Camden in 06 or 07. Was standing around and I turned around and Carolyn was standing about 3 feet from me dead on. Was just stunned how perfect her face was.
They’re still touring, without Walter and Cornelius of course. They just did a tour with the Eagles. I’ve seen them four times. Had tickets for Atlanta 2020 and Charleston 2022 but the shows were canceled.
Cynthia Calhoun, Carolyn Leonhart, and the lovely Vicki Cave. Well they were all lovely, but I especially was fond of Ms. Cave.
The 20+ years since this TV special have gone so quick... and yet it's like it's yesterday!
SD live is always good and somewhat rare. It was with Walter anyway. My old habits kick up for awhile for a show nowadays.
Walter shining on what a shame about me.
so Walter did bass first to get timing down
and then mastered guitar.
for the win.
I finally really grasp how large Walter is to this blend of amazing
and im silent at the loss while humbled to tears to hear this with new ears.
Love this! Re-living my formidable days! And I’m reminded of how Gaslighting Annie could have been a Zappa tune!
Great music and such cool dudes!
Thanks for the upload ✌🏼
I am. Long time fan… and never heard this🙏🏻
Goosebumps!!!!
Again thanks a million Dan Blecher! Can’t ask for a more awesome birthday gift! It’s frankly hardly believable!
I find myself listening to the last two albums most of the time and this is the first time I’ve heard some of these tunes live.
Good raw music!
wow!! what a concert to stumble over, absolutely brilliant. so glad this was taped.
What a masterpiece ! Love SD !
There were tapes stolen out of a locked room that was left open in between the two nights of taping. West of Hollywood was one of the songs that was taken. Since they played 2 nights of identical setlists, they did have another version of the songs stolen.
I can't believe it took me 2 years to plug this video..as always great Dan Bro 🎉
So slick, Gaslighting Abbie is a bad-ass tune 😎
Dan - you are the man!
What a great gem, along with your entire site. Thank you so much - my favorite band after The Beatles! (I’m 70 & still rockin’!)
thank you Dan b🤗👍🤝☮️
I have this Two Against Nature DVD. Although video is a little darker the sound here is much better than my DVD.. Also a few extra songs that are not on my DVD. Thanks for sharing .
Really nice charts, especially Do it Again.
Jon Herrington’s guitar work is impeccable. So damn tasty.
Wow, fantastic. Wasn't able to go to their show in S. Florida this time and I am really bummed.
Damn, the syncopation is just awesome. Doing it live !
What a Shame About Me - I've never heard it live. It's a live wire! Love it.
Close to Heaven.
Jus smilin here.
Thank you so much for the excellent recording of the show . I have been a fan for almost 5 decades and also saw them throughout the the years. Rip Walter and Cornelius
It just doesn’t get any better than this. Nice job Dan 👌🏽 Thanks, keep ‘em coming 🎶👏🏽🔥
I was in the control room calling some of the shots with the director. It was a high school dream come true
Thanks Dan for posting this. I wish we had more SD isolated tracks to hear how nuanced everyone is, the program mix here by PBS is not so balanced (Donald's Rhodes has some really loud moments but those reveal what he's accenting, same with the wonderful backup singers). As Donald pointed out this was a "made for TV" thing, and as such comes with a whole different dynamic... I love the making of AJA DVD where Walter and Donald pull the faders up and down (with engineer Roger Nichols) and comment about their original thoughts composing each part...
I'm also a big fan of exploring the multitrack recordings of different artists and hearing how all the parts come together, so it's a shame there is very little of that available in the Steely Dan world.
Simply wonderful 🎼👌
Awesome upload Dan. Thanks so much. I immediately added it to my SD live show watchlist. ✌🏼
I prefer this first night’s performance to the second, plus I like the vibe of the cameras finding positions and the boom attacking the backing vocalists!
Oh I missed that. When did that happen?😆
@@Ajaunte_ 58:46 during Deacon Blue :)
@@RealBesty oh my god😆😆 This camera crew is something else!
@@Ajaunte_ It pays to rehearse!
Thanks a lot for all the work and sharing Dan ! :)
If you have a surround sound system get this DVD and run it in DTS.
OK! :-)
Simply awesome.
Is Donald a vampire? The dude doesnt age and look at those incisors
Great...as always...!!!
Are you "bleeping" kidding me?
They come in like a house band while people are still polishing off the prime rib and the escargot en croute and then clear their throats.
You might wanna listen up! This might be good!
love it - thx
Thanks for posting!
just magnificent. Check out how cameraman gets bored or something and starts walking all over stage on Deacon Blues, doing real close ups, until a little TOO close at 587:47. And with the amazing Chris Porter on tenor, who went on to be the major figure he is in jazz. What a freakin band
Thank you
Hella yes!
Outstanding. The mix in this is so much better than the original special. I would love to know where you get all this amazing content? I love unedited footage of concerts. As tight as this performance is I just seems to miss the energy that Keith Carlock brought with his next level drumming on past concerts.
The majority of the boots I have come from either The Traders Den, or from other UA-cam videos.
OMF Donald is singing like the reed on Bumpus Sax during home at last
nodding back to Bumpus.
making his voice break like the reed.
and WALTER GEEZ LOUISE
bowing like a monk here..
YOU HEAR THAT ???
YOU FEEL THIS ?
Oh, yes! So reedy! :-)
Shockingly few hits, missed opportunity for the masses.
Actually feeling a wee bit exclusive company.
DanMan
wow!!!!
Steely Dan cannot be touched. Not musically or lyrically.
Super
Have you got this uncompressed audio available anywhere? Many thanks for your work and the great upload

I’m glad to hear that Steely Dan’s demos sucked as bad as mine :)
Laid back (it's a rehearsal, after all) but still great.
No static at all 🎸🎹🎺🎷🎤
Nice
Aside from his formidable musicianship, Mr. Fagan is a poet of the first order, I daresay even more incisive in his observations of life in the second half of the American century than Dylan who was nearly a decade older. Will future generations produce the musicians necessary to perform these American classics or will these songs only exist in recorded form? I don't want to give short shrift to Mr. Becker as his contributions were significant I'm sure. But I have to believe that the Steely Dan impulse/wellspring originates in the mind soul and spirit of Donald Fagan.. I still remember the time and place I first heard Do It Again erupt from the radio. More than a half century later, no art touches me as closely or deeply as does this Steely Dan body of work, not even that of the revered Beatles. This music/poetry is as American as can possibly be. What a shame about the current state of popular music. Thank God for SD.
If you listen to Walter Becker's solo albums and compare it to Donald Fagen's solo albums, I think you'll find Steely Dan's lyrics were most likely more evenly split between the two than most would assume.
@@djbelc01 Perhaps you're right. I can definitely allow for that possibility.
As good as anything I’ve heard … think it’s sounds more lively than Plush. Was there both nights…first row the first night in front of DF and last row (8th??😂😂) the second. Had seen all the Lone Star and Hades shows but was nothing like having the real full band in a tiny venue. Damn time flies …

CAN HEAR THE LYRICS MY SON 30 YEARS UNDER ME SAID OH I HEAR THEM DISTINCTLY
>>>Dan Belcher this means you win the internet and the pbs mastering person should take notes on how to be even better..
EVERY SECOND OF THIS IS BLISS..
I CAN NOW DISCERN WALTERS GIANT PLAYING
HOLY BLACK COW THIS IS THERAPY
EARN STUFF - Enjoy! - Experience some CLASSY JAZZ with well placed sarcasm to the nutty culture!😎
Donal Fagen nice and dear like Van Morrison!!!
Gaslighting Abbie has that Frank Zappa feel...
THIS ^^^^^^^
Definitive. Incisive. Superlative.
29:02 Walter approves
Don seems a bit grumpy here but it's a great show anyway.
I'd imagine he was pretty on edge since they were filming, a little extra pressure!
Did PBS ever cut and remix this or did it die in the 911 mess. Because I do not remember this as a PBS special. Anyway I digress Thank you for sharing this.
Yes, it also later got released on VHS and DVD, it includes a lot of interview segments that are half serious and half hilarious. I've got a copy of it on my channel that I upscaled to HD, look for "Steely Dan's Plush TV Jazz Rock Party | Remastered Upscaled 1080p HD"
Primo.
Bring back Ted Baker!
I absolutely loved his playing. Sadly he passed away last year.
If you look at the list of musicians, Larry Carlton (one of Steely Dan's greatest session guitar players) isn't even mentioned. Why?
Larry Carlton wasn't involved in this particular show, that's why. This concert was filmed with the touring band that Becker and Fagen were using in 2000. That said, Carlton has done some live performances with Steely Dan in the last couple decades, and I've actually got at least one of those posted on my channel.
@@djbelc01 So, who was the other lead guitarist standing next to Walter? He looked like Carlton: even though the camera shots were low light and fuzzy.
Jon Herington is the other guitarist. The full band lineup is listed in the video description.
Lennon & McCartney? Naw! Becker and Fagan…
Anyone know where this was filmed at?
Sony Studios in NYC
Watch it before Azoff yanks it!

I love these remastered Steely Dan concerts, except I have to say this one sucked with all the interruptions and distractions by the film producer and crew. The best part though was when Walter Becker quipped, "I seem to be soloing through some kind of cinematic gang bang."
This one is not a normal concert due to the way they filmed the special, so it kind of sticks out like a sore thumb in that regard. But on the other hand, it's kind of fun to get a bit of that behind-the-scenes view of things.
Completely disagree. This is a rare look at a legendary band filming a special that will be chopped up to make it "TV worthy".
WOAH THEY STOPPED THE AUDIENCE DURING HOME AT LAST
FROM CLAPPING BUT WAIT BECAUSE THAT THROWS EVERYONE OFF IF ITS COMING BACK ON THE WRONG TIME.
SO THEY STOPPED QUIETED THE AUDIENCE AND LET THE DRUMMER DRIVE THE BUS.
THIS IS GOLD FOR LEARNING MUSICIANS IM 61
WHAT DID WE LEARN DOROTHY ?
LET THE DRUMMER DRIVE THE BUS THEN MAYBE NOT CLAP.
LOL AS MUCH AS I CANT SIT STILL EITHER
Is that Purdy on drums?
No, it's Ricky Lawson.
@@djbelc01 Sorry, didnt read the description. Amazing drummer though! Thanks ^^
You upscaled it to 1080 but neglected to deinterlace it. Boo!!
Sadly I do not have a clean DVD of this video to rip it from with proper deinterlacing. The source video file I was working from had the interlacing artifacts, so I could only do so much with it.
Turn that jungle music down
