@@eighteen-naked-cowboys May be I don't understand American humor well, but why was this comedy just because Norm said "I believe that" after the story?
@@matchbox1275 it’s funnier because he says it louder and everyone had to do a mental double take. It also takes away the painfully awkward couple seconds right after a pun is dropped. If he stopped at “porpoise” there would have been an utterly silent second or two until the audience kicked in and this avoided that. (Notice the audience is dead silent until after he says “now I believe”)

I’ve rewatched this multiple times only to realize he gives us all these unnecessary details in the story without actually clarifying the significance of who this character is or what he actually does. Amazing

“I love you. I really do. You know that, right!”
I’m glad Conan had the chance to say that while he still could.
RIP to a comedy legend. I was lucky enough to see him a couple of years ago. He went about an hour over set and it was worth every second. I’m in shock over this loss. Crazy
He had everyone laughing several times during a terrible story with a bad pun to finish. He was a legend lmao
Norm is the only guy that can tell bad jokes that you will go back and watch again.
So, so, so true...
The corny joke was actually made 10 times funnier by Norm immediately, loudly saying "now I believe..." right after the punchline
The way he looks around cracks me up!
@@eighteen-naked-cowboys
May be I don't understand American humor well, but why was this comedy just because Norm said "I believe that" after the story?
@@matchbox1275 it’s funnier because he says it louder and everyone had to do a mental double take. It also takes away the painfully awkward couple seconds right after a pun is dropped. If he stopped at “porpoise” there would have been an utterly silent second or two until the audience kicked in and this avoided that. (Notice the audience is dead silent until after he says “now I believe”)
@@sharkprisoner1909
If only I knew what 'porpoise' meant!
I googled it.
Now your explanation makes it much funnier. Thank you so much.
That's when we can briefly cath a glimpse of his essence
I wonder how many times Norm had a silly punchline in mind and then just built in a super long, convoluted story in reverse order. What a genius.
Exactly! haha
Chappelle does that as well, two true masters of their craft.
RIP Norm. The world just lost an absolute legend.
In fact we just gained a legend...
3:03 to 4:10 is the greatest thing to witness. 3 friends just ribbing each other, laughing and joking. Not one single ounce of ego, pride, jealousy, hate, envy or animosity. Something tells me it would still be the very same conversation from those 3 if you were next to them at a table in a restaurant.
Andy wasn't a friend of Norms, he was more of a Swedish-German
At 0:35 you can actually see the moment where "a man grows" pops into Norm's head.
Man the last few seconds of the video of Conan saying “ I love you. I really do, you know that right?” Got me. These two were so freaking natural together you can tell that they were very good friends and understood one another. Rip norm!
RIP Norm…such a loss. “When I hear a guy lost a battle to cancer, that really did bother me, that that’s the term. It implies that he failed and that somebody else that defeated cancer is heroic and courageous” Norm Macdonald
It was a tie, or a draw, as them English would call it.
Wow. If I knew what he was going thru
Easily the best guest and truly an original, RIP❤️
The man knew he was dying and had a finite amount of time left, yet he still did long funny ass jokes. Now that’s brave.
Still don’t believe he’s gone.
I want to give this a thumbs up, but there are currently 69. Nice.
He's dead? I didn't even know he was sick.
i don’t even have words… one of the funniest people to grace the world
"I went from here, to there, and here again."
-Norm MacDonald
a hobbit's tale by normy baggins
"well you know a man grows..."
I use this same line so often now thanks to this great man's inspiration.
The way he puts emphasis on random words to make them see important to the joke is genius
He's like that uncle that shows up at every family reunion, tells you he knew you from you were "yea high" and gives you twenty dollars and gets really drunk during the evening, offending everyone except the kids, who hang by every story he tells.
...I feel seen
Then he disappears for years without any word and shows up randomly one year at Thanksgiving
Shoot. I think I'm that uncle...
The kids never get mad at you when you ask a cousin with a large wife when the baby is due.... so thats why im over here alone drinking.. say, can you do this? _pretends to remove finger and reattach it repeatedly_
Norms cheeky smile and side eye he gives people as he says something really corny is arguably the funniest facial expression of all time.
RIP to the funniest man that has ever lived. We’ll miss you ❤️
Truly. Thanks for the laughs, Norm! RIP ❤️
I love when Norm impresses himself and we get that little smirk
What’s always so awesome between these two is how Conan just kicks back for five to ten minutes, because he’s genuinely interested to see the resolution of the story (as we all are).
I love how Andy makes him fall out of his chair with the dog turd comment, then Norm shook his hand.. he really appreciated that one!
Good ad lib make it "hike four miles to see a dog turd shaped like a cat turd."
Every once in a while Andy nails it, and nails it really well. The joke was funny, but Richter really took it home.
You mean Andy Richter the Swedish German
The point is is that Andy escaped with his dignity
Oh how I miss him, such confidence, the deconstruction of jokes and his awareness of bad punchlines just to annoy people is beyond hysterical.
This is why comedy is art. The whole success of this joke is in the way he tells it. If he had told this some other way it would not have made me laugh nearly as hard as it did
Care to explain the joke i didnt get it at all
@@mrsirman2177 The joke was he was slowly telling a super long ass story only for the punchline of the joke to be a shitty pun that everyone's heard of. That's the joke, all that build up only for a bad pun lol.

Norm tells Jacques de Gautino that everybody expected him to serve a "useful purpose", then Jacques tells him that he is serving a "youthful porpoise". Porpoise is a sea creature that resembles dolphins. Jacques is feeding young (youthful) dolphins at SeaWorld for a living.
Basically, norm stretched a 15 seconds joke to 3 minutes and wasted everybody's time which is even funnier.

Norm was the most unique and hilarious comedian and even in death, he still somehow is. I've never felt so sad about a celebrity dying, especially because I don't think there will be anyone else like him. Thank you for everything Norm and R.I.P.
Oh Norm, it's only been a year and I miss you already.
Me too. I've always been a fan of Norm, but man, I still wish I would have appreciated him more when he was alive. I'm watching all these old videos laughing so badly my sides hurt. Usually at some point, I'll go, Is norm actually insane? lol. Love this dude.
Well, I'll say this: When the news broke that Norm was no longer of this world, the first words on everyone's mind were, "Where was O.J. that night?"
Norm really had that “let’s see if you fall for this prank”-look in his eyes all the time. 🤣 RIP, Norm!
Most of the time he just amused himself, we just got to ride along.
Norm needs to be on the podcast.
Edit:
Listened to the latest podcast where Conan mentions he was trying to get Norm before his passing. Rest in peace, Norm. Say hi to OJ's wife to us all.
I can't wait to hear norm's old man jokes.
I don’t think they’re friends anymore for some reason
@@tomvbolger you cant be serious?!
@@shalomsaldanha1825 obviously there’s no way of telling but in a recent podcast he say he doesn’t even have his number and they don’t text. Also norm got in a bit of trouble 3 years ago and Conan didn’t come out to stand up for him or even have him on the show since then
That would really be great for real
First celebrity that I genuinely feel sadness because of their passing. I wanted to meet Norm one day so badly. His comedy helped me through some difficult times in my life. I know many of us have already said it, but Norm will be missed. What a legend.
Well y'know...when we all learned that Norm was no longer with us, the first thought in all our heads was: "Where was O.J. that night?"
Whenever Norm tells one of his jokes, he's the one that looks the most amused, he doesn't care what others think, he always laughs
Every joke Norm makes feels like a joke you would die laughing at at 3 am, but when you think about it when you wake up, it makes no sense

"It makes no since."Actually sounds like a punch line to one of Norm's stories!
I actually watched this joke at around 3 am and I haven't laughed so hard in months.
Kinda like “hour... BACK! GET IT?!?!”
I happen to be watching this at 2:31 am. And I'm laughing. Point taken. Let's see how I feel about it when I wake up later.
Norm was trolling us, himself, and comedy in general. Such genius
"A youthful porpoise" this man was a genius.

There won’t be another like him. Canada is crying today. RIP Legend. 🙏🏻
The world is crying
@Energetic Coach imagine being so triggered by canada you can’t focus on a great mans career. what a looser.
The world is crying with you, brother. Rest easy, Norm
Has there ever been another comedian so naturally funny and so naturally likeable? I can't think of one. Even among the greats he stands out.
1:20 he was very proud of that line
Conan stepped on Andy's golden line three times before he got it out.
4 times actually!
it is Conan's show..
Andy tried interrupting 4 times while Conan and Norm were still talking. I’m not sure what you’re on about.
It's easy to miss the perfect writing in the first part of the story. 'He went over across the pond to the fellers in Cambridge and he even stood up to them' 'I started to do stand up and travel, from here to there and here again.' Norm was quite the wordsmith.
Norm was a poet and a storyteller in my eyes, being funny was the cherry on top. Greatest comedian ever.
RIP Norm. Great comedian that the greats respected.
Norm's the kind of guy that can not only make a lame pun one of the funniest things you ever heard, but when he messes up the story, his recovery makes you laugh even harder than anything else. Humor is in his spirit. There'll never be another like him.
One of the best parts is when Conan catches him changing the guy's name, and then.... "well, you know a man grows"
It just shows how much of a legend a person is when they pass away. Go read the comments, ask people about it etc etc. This guy really is well loved and deserves it. In many, many places. RIP Norm, Thanks for the laughs
"I started to travel from here to there and to here again." That was an underrated joke and he said it for his own enjoyment. RIP legend.
This clip really captures how magically silly and nonsensical Norm was. And the end when Conan says "I love you, I really do, you know that, right?" really shows the love he managed to inspire in other people, and in the audience worldwide. RIP Norm ❤
Let's all take a moment to appreciate how perfect Conan is a host for this style of jokes by Norm. No other host can give Norm the space and make him comfortable enough so that he can breathe and ramble on to develop his intricate wording and convoluted story lines. Even on Letterman (who was also a great Norm host!) you can see that Norm, when he's on the couch, is more constrained and has sharper stories. But only on Conan does he really let loose like this, leading to these amazing jokes/stories, such as this one and the moth joke.
Well, they were great friends 🧡
This is the funniest man to have ever lived. He just didn't care, his mind was free.
His comedic style will always make me genuinely smile. I am so glad that he existed.
Conan says “I love you” at the end... beautiful.
Norm’s laugh and response after Conan said he changed the name was pure gold 🤣 Norm was just having fun, he told jokes for his own amusement lol.
You know Conan is about to burst out laughing on Norm's story when he makes the WTF face while listening. Lol
"Well you know, a man grows" - nearly destroyed my computer with my morning coffee
I didn't get it
@@oussamaamine1697 He was implying that as men grow older and wiser they change their last name, which is an absurd statement, which in turn reveals that the whole story is made up, and that he is taking Conan and the entire audience for a ride. What's not to get.
@@sapiensmasculus9722 No. It seems to me that Conan would have already heard his joke and Norm had given another last name. The phrase comes up that the man, as he ages he tends to forget things that don't have much importance, such as a name in this type of joke.
his reaction to Andy's comment is the best compliment you could imagine
He destroyed the poor guy so many times, he appreciated the guy could now understand his art.
4 mile hike to see a dog turd!!! That was Andy Richter's best putdown ever, especially vs. Norm. Even Norm had to recognize. And you know Andy had that in his back pocket because, let's be honest, he was commenting on ALL of Norm's jokes! Great thing was, like everything in life, it's all about the 4 mile hike/journey isn't it? And Norm was a master trail guide.....miss you Norm.
gotta love Norm, right when you have such high expectations, he sets up this amazing story, and relishes in the utter thud of the landing of the whole set up... Freggin love this guy...
My favorite part is Norm saying “now I believe!” at the end of the joke. Gets me every time.
3:39 The glee Norm took in wasting everyone's time was so endearing.
I love how the joke is very clearly set up such that Jaques DeGatineau is supposed to have a French Canadian accent so that the pun in the punchline works, and Norm just doesn't bother with the accent. True power move.
